boring
i got into the 7th chapter of this book and i did'nt find it the least bit interesting what so ever.so i put it down,maybe it would have gotten better but as far as i got i was board out of my mind.

A Depressing but Important read
A very intriguing look at mental illness.A very sad story, that is about the death of one family that leads to the creation of another.

A Book That Stays With You
Not many stories, real or imagined, grip a reader like Julie Salamon's "Facing The Wind." I knew where the story would end - or so I thought. The murder is revealed on the book jacket, but the tale really lies in whether or not Bob achieves forgiveness and repentance. Does he deserve the second life he finds with his wife, clearly a damaged soul herself? What responsibility is shared by the doctors who released Bob and failed to monitor his intake of psychotropic drugs? Brilliant and Funny
This book hit the nail on the head for me. It helped me extricate myself from a life time of having to deal with my mother's emotional blackmail, PLUS confront my own maladaptive patterns that were equally bad. Uncannily enough, I had saved photocopies of a pile of letters I had sent to a long-term past boyfriend with whom I had a dysfunctional relationship. I went through all of those letters and underlined all my blackmailing tricks and named which category they belonged to. What a revelation and how wonderfully freeing. I then prayed that God would give me the courage to overcome these ways and replace it with courage and insight to be honest. Wow! I've never looked back ... only to consult the book every now and again for a booster! And to re-read those letters for a laugh.
I loved this book - It really helped!
I was fortunate to find a great book that explains how people displace negative feelings onto others - and how to respond to that.This is a great resource - thanks!

This can be a life-saving book!

Betrayal of Trust
I received what looked like a nicely preserved used copy.
promising start but poor finish
If horror writer Stephen King ever suffers from writer's block, he should read this book's opening chapter, where Pulitzer Prize winner Laurie Garrett describes traveling into the plague ravished Indian city of Surat. The description, which belongs more in the Book of Revelations than in a chronicle of modern day health care, is stomach churning. Irula tribesmen are paid to catch the plague carrying rats - and are encouraged to eat their prey. The rats, being the breeding grounds for all conceivable types of plagues and pestilences that they are, quickly turn the Irula predators into their prey. Even as the yesinia pestis bacterium and its bubonic plague cousin were devastating the city, Surat's Aids-racked prostitutes continued to ply their trade. Life goes on, even in the midst of death.

Great Book!!
This book is great! He does a wonderful job of explaining what the early days of the war was like and the state of the colonial army was like. I never really understood how huge the odds against us where until now. The book does a great job at introducing you to Washington, his struggles and the struggles of the nation during this year.

The greastest country ever, how it became.
David McCullough's book, though not thorough in introducing the reader to all the twists and turns of our nation's early history, does an excellent job in introducing George Washington, King George of England and the daunting task that Washington had in trying to hold a truly "rag tag" army together while the British tried to vanquish the Revolutionaries in the Colonies.
I Wonder How It Ends?
Books on history can often be a hard sell to both publishers and readers. The rehashing of old material gets, well, old. You either have to come up with an obscure piece of history that few know about but is engaging, or you have to recreate a larger section that is known by many and give some new tidbits.

Lucky for me we have translators.
Have this, didn't use it..can't imagine popping open a book in front of a patient and reading a line from a book. I think these books are useless in major hospitals. If you're in a community hospital this may be of use since more and more people are less willing to translate out of fear of a lawsuit.
disapointing
The book was disapointing.Material is not organized by the level of difficulty.Very simple sentences and phrases are placed next to gramaticly advanced ones. The best book/cassette crash course for health workers
There are at least three books on the market for health care workers who wish to learn enough spanish to help their Latino patients. I have all three and think that this is the best one. The others have many dialogues and phrases that are simply unrealistic and would never need to be known by a nurse or a doctor. You end up wasting your time learning phrases that you will never use. This book (be sure to get the cassettes also as they have all of the essential phrases so you can practice your pronunciation) has words and phrases which mirror reality. This is information you can really use. It is amazing how much you can pick up with just a few hours of study. Well worth the price! ... Read more

Not bad for boilerplate.
This is the kind of authorship I was raised on - an eastern intellectual writes a scholarly work, published by a major New York publishing house, which adds a new and slightly different perspective on a historical figure. It's a worthwhile read but limited necessarily, by the nature of it's origin.

Incredibly helpful for beginners
This was very helful in teaching the proper pronunciation in Russian.It was especially helpful to see how words in Russian are pronounced phonetically in English.It took a lot of the guess work out of learning another language.

A CRITICAL TOOL FOR THE BEGINNER!
I found this to be a great tool....It is PERFECT for the genuine beginner in establishing the most basic, fundamental, building blocks for language learning....alphabet, names of letters, and sounds associated with those letters. I continue to use it, and I have a pretty good working vocabulary (about 1,000 words +), and can read and write everything I know. But I definitely credit this aid for helping get me started SMOOTHLY, because you KNOW how hard it can be to encounter things out of order, making learning that much more difficult! I didn't get much from the diagrams of the mouth and throat illustrating tongue positions, but that was the only "flaw", and I do not know whether it is a flaw at all or just that interpreting such information is not natural to some of us...I don't get much from the voice pattern graphs on computer aids, either. But I consider this to be one of the tools I would not have wanted to be without. Another is the Penguin Russian Course: A Complete Course For Beginners. Excellent book that describes how to create a trend
I was fascinated by the original perspective in this thought provoking book about the evolution of an idea into a trend.Using easy to understand examples, Malcolm Gladwell explains the mechanics of the process, and enlightens us about the the various people involved.I strongly recommend this book.I also recommend Robert Cialdini's book, Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion.These books complement each other and should be read together.

It had quite an unusual effect
I was looking for an original and valuable present for my boyfriend. I am very pleased with my decision to buy this book. It draws from several areas of knowledge and Malcolm Gladwell is a very skillful writer. He knows how to engage you from the first page till the last one and keeps you wondering what more you will learn from this incredible book. My boyfriend said that the tipping point and scientifically guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex are the best, most valuable and eye-opening books he has ever received as a present. Well, I don't hear such compliment every day. It was such a small thing for me to give him a present and yet it turned so important for him. What better proof for Gladwell's thesis. I also agree that we all should start paying more attention to the small, small things and details from our daily lives and the result may astound us. Flexibility and tolerance are learned skills, as any parent knows if they've seen an irascible 2-year-old grow into a pleasant, thoughtful, and considerate older child. Unfortunately, for reasons that are poorly understood, a few children don't "get" this part of socialization. Years after toddler tantrums should have become an unpleasant memory, a few unlucky parents find themselves battling with sudden, inexplicable, disturbingly violent rages--along with crushing guilt about what they "did wrong." Medical experts haven't helped much: the flurry of acronyms and labels (Tourette's, ADHD, ADD, etc.) seems to proffer new discoveries about the causes of such explosions, when in fact the only new development isalternative vocabulary to describe the effects. Ross Greene, a pediatricpsychologist who also teaches at Harvard Medical School, makes a bold and humane attempt in this book to cut through the blather and speak directly to the (usually desperate) parents of explosive children. His text is long and serious, and has the advantage of covering an enormous amount of ground with nuance, detail, and sympathy, but also perhaps the disadvantage that only those parents who are not chronically tired and time-deprived are likely to get through the entire book. Quoted dialogue from actual sessions with parents and children is interspersed with analysis that is always oriented toward understanding the origins of "meltdowns" and developing workable strategies for avoidance. Must read if you work w/ a difficult child
This well-organized, brilliantly thought-out book gives educators and parents a completely different way of thinking about how we lead all children but particularly difficult, abused, angry children.In short order it provides specific tools together with examples of what we can do to create a more peaceful, flexible child who can function successfully in the world and get along with others.The corresponding web site is extremely valuable in conjunction w/ this book.

Real Results-when nothing else has worked!
Thank you Dr. Greene, as reading this book has been more helpful to helping me understand my daughter, and has given us more tangible results than any other medication or therapy that we have tried. Things are not completely normal, but after instituting the behavior plan, they are MUCH BETTER. Every child is different, but in our specific case, the information that Dr. Greene presents makes so much sense, and his basket approach has really helped us avoid rages. This is a must read for parents of children diagnosed with Reactive Attachment disorder, Bipolar, ODD, or ADHD. I highly recommend it.

Explosive Child? The Real Solution May Surprise You!
Frustrated by my son's age-inappropriate temper tantrums, I desperately searched for solutions. [He'd be set off by little things like making a mistake coloring and would rage for 1/2 hour or more ... still at age 6! Maybe this is understandable for a 2 year old, but there was something wrong here...] I approached it psychologically, certain that I somehow wasn't handling him properly. However, he just seemed out of control. No matter how I approached his anger, I couldn't make any significant changes. I purchased this book, but it didn't help me much, as I'd already tried so many behavioral approaches. I finally researched the Feingold Program (you can Google it) after observing that his biggest tantrums came immediately after eating foods with red food coloring. The Feingold Program primarily removes artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives from children's food and environment (yes, even those hand-stamps after gym class can have an effect!), and it's been around since the '70s. A family friend used it successfully for her 2 boys during that time, so I knew at least one success story. I bought the materials and dove in. Guess what -- no more tantrums! My boy is a changed person, and I couldn't be happier. Please give this diet a try -- you may be amazed! It's a bit more work for me when shopping or cooking, but my life is so much easier in every other way because I'm not dealing with a raging kid all the time. He and his little sister (who's 3 and is also on the diet now; she doesn't seem as sensitive as he is, but she definitely benefits also) now play nicely most of the time, freeing up hours of my day. I truly believe that the question is NOT "Will this help my child?" ... the question is "How much will this help my child?" ... Read more

Not the Whole Bible!
The description for this item is a bit deceptive.It IS NOT the whole Bible, it is only the NAB version of the New Testament.I was a bit disappointed as I already have the New Testament on audio.

This is a wonderful narration of the New Testament.I listen to it in my car on the way to and from work, and I really look forward to hearing it.The narrator is not unctious or overbearing, but very expressive and interesting, and extremely easy to understand.And of course, you can't gowrong with the material!The numbering of each Bible chaper is noted, soit would be possible to follow along reading your own Bible.I just wishthe St. Joseph people would come out with a narration of The Old Testament! Great Book
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.
Needed pictures
This was a great book for a child who knows how to read. It mirrors the adult bible. We were looking for a bible story book for our 3yr old grand-daughter that we could read to her and discuss the actions in the pictures.

Portable - the size of a paperback novel.
That's what I like best about this Bible. You can read it easily - it's not too big and heavy, the pages aren't too thin. Plus the cover is very cute and makes it look just like a regular book. NIV means it's been translated into easy-to-understand English. The Book of Revelation is especially easier to read than in other translations. ... Read more

It's hard for me to understand the extreme reactions to this book. You don't have to agree with everything a book says to get at least some good out of it. I found it to be helpful. It did a good job of making me think about life. Are we just specks floating about on the wind, or are we indeed here for a purpose. The book doesn't delve into theological tedium, thankfully. Mostly, it's just practical stuff. I tell everyone to read a book called The Strongest Defense of Christianity after this one. It is fun
I was a bit disappointed at first - I listened to the other CD set before this one But, more I listened to it ,more interesting it became. Both voices are very seductive and full of subtle energy. I am not sure if the "guest speaker" are different or same guys, if they are same I have to admit they did a profound job. I loved the different accent and content of the story as well. I would really remember the words s well as the sentences from the speakers note.
I may be in Love with Polly Segal
If you would like to increase your vocabulary, and be seduced at the same time, you really need to get this audio cassette collection. Now, don't get me wrong, this is not an overt seduction; it is just that I personally find Polly Segal's voice to be very attractive in a classy sort of way. If I were to name this program, I would call it WORD TITILLATION.
Good but a little annoying
It teaches you over 200 new words that you can listen and learn. The dialog in the tape can be very annoying. I wish that the tape contains more word and less useless dialog. If you take out all the annoying dialogs in the tape, it will make 5-stars tape :)Read more

An Intriguing Look into the mind of a Sociopath!
Dead by Sunset is my next favorite Ann Rule book after ... And Never Let her Go, the story of demented Tom Capano.The trial [which Brad Cunningham defends himself] was priceless and unbelievable.It cost the taxpayers SO much money and Brad tried endlessly to prolong it as long as he possibly could.Ann Rule is the most interesting and thorough of true-crime authors.It is definitely worth adding to your book collection.

Another solid Rule true crime
I've been working my way through Rule's work, having only first read her work in this last year.This is another good story, or should I say, a very sad and tragic story, but well told and explained and expounded upon by Rule.
the ultimate pathological narcissist

Arabic in 20 minutes a day
I bought Pimsleur Instant Conversation Arabic to listen to on the way to work. It is an excellent program for that format. This method requires no preliminary knowlege of the language. It is clear and self explanatory. It builds on patterns of speech and requires active participation; it is not rote learning. At the end of the program I will have a framework of simple greetings and sentences to use in Arabic. However, this program is a starting point, not a complete language learning program.

This learning tool is very effective and very well executed. Just what I was looking for to learn Arabic while riding in my car.

Great if you want to learn basics
My boyfriend's family is from West Bank, and though a few of the pronounciations were a bit different, for the most part, this program is right-on! Everyone is amused and so proud of the quick progress I made listening to these tapes. Learn the tell time, ask how much things cost, basic hosting conversation, etc. It's basic, but GREAT! If you're dilligent about doing a lesson each day, you'll be speaking after the first day...and making sentences and understanding conversation after the first week. Highly recommended!! ... enjoyable BUT
I am halfway through the second set of Pimsleur CDs, and I admit that the Pimsleur method has kept my interest, and taught me some stuff BUT the arrorance of its authors, by providing virtually NO written materials, bothers me more every day.
