5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Book!
Since all actions are preceded by thoughts, Don Miguel Ruiz explores, quite eloquently, why every dream has a significant impact upon our actions. I recommend this book for anyone with a vision.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
The book is partially a plagiarism of the Colorado University Lakota textbook by Rood&Taylor (published in early 1970s). But it is contains only a very limited size of vocabulary and grammar. The exercises are not contextual at all. No real methodology, minimal structure. A lot of "folk-etymology" (not proper recognition of word origin).1-0 out of 5 stars :( pretty bad
Since I found much repetition in this book, I copied all relevant info (except pronounciation examples) into a notebook.Well, page six was blank, there waas nothing more to write. This book will teach you forms of address, and its great for teaching pronunciation, but apart from that it just teaches conjugation and colors.Whatever it cost, you will get a Lakota phonetics course for that price.

5-0 out of 5 stars An uncommon language lesson
From the start, Albert White Hat makes it clear that learning Lakota is more than just a linguistic exercise. As he writes in his introduction: "When we teach a language to a student, we should develop in that student another heart and another mind."And indeed, these are lessons in Lakota culture from the ground up, introducing the Lakota heart and mind through their expression in basic grammatical relations. And from the very beginning, White Hat makes it a compelling journey. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Most Concise Language Course for the Shoshoni Language
Drusilla Gould is a fluent Shoshone speaker and has devoted herself to this endeavor by the encouragement and support of her grandmother. Her cultural and historical perspective to the language offers the depth of meaning to the words.Chris Loether offers his vast knowledge as a linguist to the text. This book is a step in the right direction towards saving and preserving the Shoshoni language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Shoshoni Language
An introduction to one of the lesser known languages of native culture. This volume is accompanied by a set of tapes that make it clear and consise. An easy to read and understand volume with glossaries from Shoshoni to English and English to Shoshoni. It is volumes like this that will keep native languages from becoming extinct.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Linguistic and Culturally Contemporary Course
Linguistically, the most exiting language course ever published for learners of the Shoshoni Language. The course starts with Dr. Loether's refinement of the old Shoshoni orthography, then slowly begins feeding the learner intomeaningful dialogs and situations, mixed with useful everyday vocabulary, grammar, and sentence drills. This course is designed for the learner to actually use the Shoshoni language, such as, at the house, the trading post, the museum, the pow-wow, or the university. The tapes are wonderfully orchestrated by fluent Drusilla Gould, who speaks very slow and thoughtfully for the learner focusing on the new sounds and words.

5-0 out of 5 stars enthralling
After reading all Castaneda's other works, this one seems to tie them all together in a most favorable way. Read start to finish, randomly, backwards or just a bit at a time. All of Don Juan Matus' remarks are truly magical.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Active Side of Infinity
I have read and enjoyed all of the books written by Carlos Castaneda, with the exception of The Second Ring of Power. However, for the first time, in his book The Active Side of Infinity, I felt that Carlos Castaneda was revealing more about himself, than he had ever done in any of his previous works.I found this book to be an excellent synopsis of his life both before his apprenticeship and during his apprenticeship with don Juan.If you, like me, have been bedazzled by all of the information contained in his earlier works, you will find this a marvellous book for consolidating much of the information that you have read but not truly internalised.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stellar!

2-0 out of 5 stars Caveat for Castaneda's first book
I waited until I had read books 2 - 8 before I read this first book, and I was glad I did, because I wouldn't have read the other books if I'd read this one first. But with the others under my belt, I was able to see what Castaneda was demonstrating out of his bag of tricks, and also could appreciate his maturing by the time he wrote his subsequent works.
1-0 out of 5 stars Casteneda: shaman or sham?
I was surprised to find this book not only still in print, but enthusiastically reviewed by so many who obviously take it seriously. For those willing to do a little background research into Casteneda and his subject matter it will quickly become apparent that the events detailed in 'The Teachings' did not, and could not have occurred as described.Space prevents me going into detail here, but I have a review on my website at:
5-0 out of 5 stars loved the story...

5-0 out of 5 stars Keepers Series
Joseph Bruchac is a natural stort teller. This whole series is wonderful. I have used these books with children from the ages of four through fourteen. But of all of them the cassette of The Keepers of the Animals is my favorite and the only one that I cannot keep because I am continually giving it away. It is not only the quality of Bruchac's voice but also the cadence that he brings to the telling that adds a resonance, a native rhthym to the stories, that enhances understanding. This is the way that these stories should be told and should be heard. Native American culture has a rich oral tradition and the sounds, the rhthyms of the language are an important part of the telling of a story. We may not have the sounds of the language per se except in the names but we can hear a little of the native cadence in Bruchac's delivery. These are wonderful tapes for small children and again this is my very favorite.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing Native Stories to Life
I've been lucky enough to see Michael Caduto perform theseNative stories in person. He brings Native beliefs to life inunexpected and delightful ways. The stories he and Josheph Bruchac have put together here do the same thing. They give young readers a chance to explore Native cultures while they learn and enjoy the stories! In addition to Native tales, this book provides factual information and activities on nature and animals. It's an outstanding resource for teachers, parents, and kids of all ages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great Spirit, Wakan-Tanka
My desire to understand and commune withthe Great Spirit of the NativeAmericanWays satisfies my sacred spirit in everygood manner when Ed McGaaspeaks about Black Elk and the Vision.Joseph Campbell, the greatMythologist, called Black Elk's Vision the greatest example of imagery andspirituality. This inner locus of control to find our sacred spirit andcommune within GreatSpirit with all good people seems to methe essence ofour spiritual quest.During the last century, perhaps 1872, Black Elk had aNear Death Experience atage nine years. My NDE happened in 1945 at ageseven years. My NDE, and many others, will be presented in a new bookcalled "Children of the New Millenium" in early 1999 by PMHAtwater. The patterns of life that emerge in thelives of such childrenamazes me! Black Elk kept his fascination with life and all good people, from the enchanting description of his encounter in Londonwith QueenVictoria, called Grandmother England, to his own survival of the massacreat Wounded Knee!"In a Sacred manner I have made them walk..."sings Black Elk about his role as a healer among his people ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Lakota History
The Journey of Crazy Horse by Joseph M. Marshall III isn't just a history of one man, it's the saga of the end of a proud people, symbolized by the life of their bravest warrior. This is the story of a hero, a martyr, and truth be told, a successful terrorist defending his lands against an invasion. He failed, but he never compromised. What makes this telling special is the hand of Joseph Marshall, a Lakota whose story mixes the pride and sadness of one intimate with the culture and whose history was so deeply marked by the last Lakota warrior.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent history of the Lakota tribe during the late 1800's.
This book is not just about the man, or the hero Crazy Horse, its the history of the end of the free reign of the Lokota tribe. It's cultural war from the point of the native Americans. You know, now that Eastern Montana is becoming devoid of dry land farmers, maybe we should consider giving those homesteads back to the Lakota tribe.
4-0 out of 5 stars Captivating
I picked this book up while in South Dakota recently.Having visited the Crazy Horse monument, I felt I should learn more about Crazy Horse the man rather than the legend.

5-0 out of 5 stars My experience with Guide
When this book came to me I was already in touch with books of Miguel Ruiz. They appealed to me; I liked the concepts, masteries of awareness, love, transformation, intention... I already incorporated four agreements - I lived it and it really improved the quality of my life. I changed myself, I paid attention to what I was doing, saying, seeing, hearing... It was just amazing experience. But, it was not enough. After that first enthusiasm and euphoria I felt stack again. I hit the ceiling and felt frustrated. Susan Gregg's books opened a new gateway. Although familiar with ideas and concepts I did not know how to go deeper, how to make that necessary breakthrough that moves me further, that brings me closer to myself, to understanding of what I am and what I really want materialized in my life. Her Guide is just what I needed. It is simple and practical. It actually tells you how and what to do. It explains in a simple way what it takes and how committed you have to be. The "awareness" I have practiced without any trouble, but the "transformation" is difficult and essential. Without daily dedication to transformation exercises there is no progress. Transformation is what gives you the possibility to cross over to another realm of being, feeling, sensing. It is tough but reachable. It takes few years and you realize it while reading the book. I am a master in digesting, accepting and even communicating these ideas to other people. I was passionate about it because I understood at some deeper level that this is what helps, make a difference and transforms ones life. The only problem is the integration of those ideas and concepts. Susan Gregg is able to convey that mastery; she opens the possibility for integration. For me that was the gift. It is not about the theory and ideas it is about living them and working towards integrating them. I consider myself still at the beginning of that road but it is a comfort to have this book to remind me, to motivate me again when I loosen up, to tell me "look in the mirror and tell yourself...", to get me back on track, to keep me work on my transformation and follow my spiritual path. Her book guides but gives you freedom to choose your path, to follow your pace. It gives you the structure that to feed with your content, with your life experiences. It gives you the key to transform and understand your experiences in a new light. To benefit from the book one has to be persistent. I do not torture myself, I do it in my own pace, but I do it. It is a very resourceful book and invaluable to those who are willing to transform their lives for better. I strongly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I loved this book which I first heard on tape.It helped me see the world as it is.I'm still practicing the many suggestions for freeing ourselves from our pasts.I have given this book to several of my family and friends!

4-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and thought provoking.
Mary Summer Rain has captured, and proliferated in writing, the true nature of the quintessential lucid dreamer, the dreamwalker. For those others who have reviewed this book and have found it to not possess the pragmatic answers they expected, be reminded that not all questions in thiswalk are answered. "When the student is ready, the teacher willcome."

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting subject matter, but somewhat evasive with info.
Although I really enjoyed this book, I felt that much of the information she presented was alluded to and not explained to the reader. This left me bothered. I wanted a braver approach to the material that she tackles.Metaphysical or Spiritual books lack in effectiveness when the author isthe only one experiencing the revelations. I didn't feel I was given aclear opportunity to relate. I was hoping for some more profoundinsights...the 'aha' to come. This was the first book that I have read byMary Summer Rain, and it is one of her earliest works. I would beinterested to read one of her more recent publications, since her subjectmatter is so interesting, and I enjoy her straight-forward style ofwriting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Vision
_Over the years I have read this book in the wilderness and in the wasteland. Every time that I have reread it I have come away renewed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom and Inspiration Abound!
This is an exceptionally moving book for anyone yearning to know more about Native American spirituality. Black Elk was truly a man filled with the holy spirit. It reminds me of the book, Walking the Trail, One Man's Journey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears. Both are highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Religious Classic?
It says on the jacket of this book that Black Elk Speaks belongs in the company of 'religious classics'.Maybe so, but even if you regard his visions as indicative of a religious experience, the parts of the book dedicated to the description of these visions make for rather tedious reading. The real meat of the book is his decriptions of the last of the major indian battles at Rosebud, Little Big Horn (Custer's Last Stand), and Wounded Knee.Black Elkand his friends were there, and lived through those harrowing days.A must-read book for anyone who wants to know how it really was. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Small book
This was a very small book of short quotes from Indians. It was mildly interesting but not as inspirational as I thought it would be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen. Just listen and learn A Reverence For All Life
This is the way first nations taught their young. Listen, watch, let the meaning come to you. Don't grab for it. Have patience. Kent Nerburn gathered these pieces as a first step, a primer.
5-0 out of 5 stars The wisdom of the People
I have read the book and I have listened to the audio cassette, and while I recommend both, I find that I prefer the audio version. That is because, as the introduction points out, the Native American tradition was primarly a verbal one. This is magnificent, poetic, oratory and needs to be read aloud. And for a change, the audio version is totally unabridged. Moreover, the musical interludes by Carlos Nakai could not be more appropriate.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars 166 Quickies
Sorting through many of the American Indian Myths (As if there was a homogenized group called American Indians) Richard Erdoes and Alfonzo Ortiz selected 166 short, one or two page, stories. These stories look like the pre-curser to the urban legends today.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Collection of Stories from the First Nations
Richard Erdoes and Alfonso Ortiz really did a wonderful job putting together this compilation. Taking various stories from North America, the duo covers traditional tales of everyone from the Aleut to the Toltecs and pretty much everything in between. Every region and culture group is represented, and tales from well known Nations such as the Cherokee, Lakota, Dine (Navajo), Apache and Iroquois appear beside those of less well known (but no less vibrant and culturally active) Nations such as the Miwok, Caddo, Metis and Shasta. Hopefully this will help expand people's views of Native American culture. After all, stereotypical views of "Indians" rarely include the Nations of California or the Pacific Northwest, or even the Southern Woodlands (the original homeland of the Cherokee and their neighbors). Obviously not every Nation could be represented, but this is still an excellent survey of the continent. It does a wonderful job showing how common cultural themes have woven their way across this entire continent, helping to reinforce the culture and customs of the First Nations. And at the same time, it also shows how each culture was different, having its own beliefs, customs and practices unique to themselves.5-0 out of 5 stars Good storyteller
