4-0 out of 5 stars How To vs. Can Do
My purpose for ordering this book was to gain the knowledge of how to do this type of work. While the "how to" is limited, the advantage to me is to learn what can be done and this book covers this well.Overall, I am pleased that I ordered it.
4-0 out of 5 stars fournier rules
This book paid for itself at page 3 and has continued to do so ever since. Why no 5 star rating well its because I cant afford some of the equipment and he provides no poor mans alternative.

3-0 out of 5 stars good but old
This book was written in the early eighties, and it shows. There is some valuable information, but it is aimed at the sheet metal shaping world- for instance, how to put compound curves into metal.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book's price guide needs to be changed completely!
I feel that the price guide was very badly placed, it is in the back of the book. The listings of the cars were in alphabetical order to some extent. I prefer the prices to be right under their corresponding cars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must need book for serious Hot Wheels collectors
I came across this book while shopping at my local bookstore, I started looking through it, and without a moments hesitation, I knew I needed this book. It is very good as a refrence book, also for giving me information onmy collection. Very well done book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly organized and difficult to use
Due to the organization of this book it is extremely hard to locate any particular diecast unless you have the diecast number or item name or designation. Photos are very small and indistinct making it hard toidentify items. It appears that not all diecasts produced are listed inthe yearly listings nor are all photos shown.Overall rating on thispublication is 2 stars or less! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Generalist's Book On Classic Cars
No book is perfect for the collector, but this is probably the best for car collectors. With over 1000 of the world's finest models, from over 200 marques, it has certainly captured the best amongst its pages. It also has some strange picks, but it doesn't claim to only list the top cars. And the world doesn't start in 1945 for this author, his team goes back as far as 1891 for their car selections. Excellent colour photos, with some B/W.Godd source of information on cars from the 1930s.With over 500 pages, this is a big book in all dimensions.Great value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent gift
I bought "The Cobra in the Barn" book for my husband. He loves it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Coffee Table Book
Good book for the waiting room of an upscale independent auto repair shop or the "reading room" in you own home; i.e. circumstances where you don't expect to read a book cover to cover. Some of the vignettes are very well written. Some are not.The latter fact is more noticeable because they all have the same story line.Several of those near the end of the book immerse the reader in minutiae about a particular car's history that only that car's owner could possibly care about.Overall, I enjoyed the portions I read, but will pass it on to a friend confident that he will do the same when he's finished with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun, light read for a car guy like me
I have scouted, searched, and on occasion bought an old car that has been sitting somewhere without a "for sale" sign on it. This book reads like the journal I'd like to write. The cars and their circumstances are mostly unique situations, and the lost/found and long term pursuit angles are the best. For the most part the buyers have a genuine interest, if not a personal one, in the cars they seek.Thankfully, the megabucks trophy collectors and hoarders who fill their warehouses (and ruin it for most everyone else) don't dominate the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vintage Beauties
This book has a fine combination of beautiful photos and well written text about an American niche. There are stories and examples from all over America that give a glimpse of the joy of seeing the world from a home away from home.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my trailer bible!
I have a weakness for books on architecture and interior decorating anyway. But this is the one I turn to again and again. For those of us with Champaign tastes and beer budgets, a vintage trailer is ulimately doable. Own your own piece of modernist archeture, albeit on wheels, even though you could never touch a Mies or Wright. When ever I try to figure out what to do with my 1957 Sportcraft (a classic silver-clad "canned ham"), I flip through these pages. I always find something inspiring.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read
This is an incredible wealth of information for anyone interested in architecture, travel trailers, and Americana in general. Lovely photography is augmented by nicely coordinated text. Some redundancy is my only criticism.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a bit prejudiced but....
When my editor and friend Darwin Holmstrom proposed this title, I jumped on the assignment. Several years ago he and I had discussed the idea of looking at the auto business from the perspective of how each car maker motivated the other. It's not exactly copycat engineering. Our book dug deeply into the stories behind the products and the motivation behind Detroit's anxious and enthusiastic adoption of what had been the chief influence of hot rodders: the unfulfilled need for affordable speed. Detroit found it could make the cars, market them, warrantee them, sell them, and reap the profits from them, and for several years - and again now - we all enjoyed a Golden Age. This book puts this particular niche of high-performance, no-compromise automaking into the context of the times and the competitors. Darwin and I worked our photographer friends David Newhardt and Mike Mueller (and there even are a few of my images in there,) to exhaustion finding and shooting rare, significant machines in interesting locations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Muscle Car Book Ever
I've bought all of Randy Leffingwell's muscle car books. The first muscle car book I ever bought was his "American Muscle," which was also one of the best. I even bought his recent book "Porsche 911: Perfection By Design," even though I am not that interested in foriegn cars. It's a great story, with great photography.
5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn'twait and bought this from Autobooks in Burbank
I'm a cheap bugger and almost always shop at Amazon to save money, but I found a copy of this book at Autobooks when I visited Burbank over the weekend. Owner Doug Stokes said it shipped early. I was going to order it from Amazon, but it looked so great I couldn't wait and bought a copy at full price. It was worth every penny. The photography was so stunning that if you looked at it too long it might burn the corneas of your eyes. Best of all, it included tons of photos of rare and important but seldom-seen muscle cars, images unavailable anywhere else. The text was as good as the photos. In his foreword Jim Wangers calls this one of the best books ever written on the subject. As usual, Mr. Wangers is correct. If you care at all about American performance cars, you must buy this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Thunderbird Restoration Guide 1958-1966
Book pays to much attention to the "top of the line" Models.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent starting point for the restorer
This book isn't a detailed step by step guide in the specifics of restoring an old T-bird but it does give the new Bird owner a good idea not only of what he or she has, but what it is worth. There is a lot of very good info on the history of the 58-66 T-birds as well as an excellent section on the rare M-Code T-birds of 62-63.5-0 out of 5 stars Thunderbird
This is THE book if you are in the process of restoring a 1958 - 1966 Thunderbird. This book goes into every detail. I mean, they even give thespecifications of the M390 engine, right down to the cam lift andduration! This book goes into more fine details about the classic 4 seatTbirds then any other book I have ever read. This is a must have if you areeven thinking about buying or restoringone of these classics. It haschapters for every year from 58 - 66, and talks about every model for everyyear. Such cars as the 62 and 63 Sports Roadster, the Princess MonacoLandau, the 65 "Special Landau", and the 1960 sun roof are evenincluded. This has to be the most complete restoration guide for theseclassic 4 seat Thunderbirds I have ever seen. Even if you think you knowall about Thunderbirds, read this book! I can assure you that you will findthings you never knew about these timeless classics. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I bought this book because I was rebuilding my T 176 Transmission. The preview stated that it gave information on transmission rebuilds. Well it does, but not on the one I have. Does not give info on the T176/T178 tranny. After I bought the book I realized this is one mans rebuild of a Jeep as it should be in his mind. Stick with the Chiltons. Overall I did not find this book useful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good idea but nowhere close to expectations
This book looks like it was written by someone who works in their own garage as a hobby. There is no real technical data in this book-- no hint of professionalism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff!!!
Burger and Hendrickson have done a great job of covering the process of building a hot rod. With their years of experience, wit, and wisdom it makes for a very enjoyable read. Much of the text is obviously culled from the late, great RODDER'S DIGEST magazine, but it was good then, just as it is now. For anyone who is seriously into hot rods, this is required reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done
This book is the best I've read on this hard to find subject. Plenty of information that only true Classic car lovers will appreciate.I've been a collector of American classics since I graduated college in 1972, and it is very difficult to find accurate information on these cars without spending hours on the Internet-something most of us don't have the time to do.I was a mechanic for 10 years before owning and operating my own dealership in California, I still own two of the cars covered in this book, the 1963 Ford Thunderbird, and the 1966 Pontiac GTO, the author does a superb job of covering both of them.

When I read this book on Classic American Cars it blew me away but failed to mention about the Renalut Alliance and the power under the hood.My boy the Nook owned one of these classic babes and kicks himself everyday that he got rid of it.He drives to work in his Bentley cussing about how much smoother and more comfortable the ride was in the RA with the leather top.So one day Nook approces me and says "I am about to biuld the 2005 version of this sweetheart"/My first thought was man he already get any hottie he wants now if he truely builds this the skys the limit. So he gets J-Abs, Kroll and ex-New Orleans Saints LB Vaughn Johnson brings us to his state of the art 40,000 square foot garage and shows us the plans.Vaughn, Kroll and mysekf went to get a case of Pabst Blue Ribbon so we could help and when we returned 30 minutes later it was built and he was painting it a pimp orange while a opal leather top.It has 45" spinners and 14 18" kicker speakers throughout the ride.So we go cruisin listening to Too Short's Life is Too Short and it was like flies on poop with the ladies.Nook literally had to do 3 mph down the main strip just not to run over one of these hot gals.Eat your heart out Monster Garage cause Nook has the granddaddy of them all.Nook is the new improved Renault Alliance and you are the 1987 Yugo.

3-0 out of 5 stars A history of fins
The writer is fascinated with the evolution of the tail fin, and it seems to be the main theme. His writing is painful to read.Does "rude" means "good"?One car has a trunk the size of Indiana, another can hold a football team, and another a golf tournament. But which of these is the biggest? And those fins...by 1965 they were getting smaller by the day!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Starter Books
By far a really, really good starter book for anyone looking to see what it would take to get into restoring a classic car.If you know the basics; budgeting, tools needed, what car to look for this is not the book for you.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Beginner's Guide
If you already know a lot about Pitman arms, rag joints, pinion gears, and harmonic balancers, then this book is probably not for you. After all, the word, "idiot," is in the title. As the new owner of a collector car who hasn't much of a clue where to start, I found it to be perfectly suited to my needs and knowledge level. The information is presented in such a way as to apply to a wide range of vehicle types, which I especially liked, since my specific vehicle interests don't correspond at all with the author's.Most importantly, the author is a good writer and the book is enjoyable to read, cover to cover.(There are a few typos, which always surprises me.)Overall, a good value and a great introduction to the topic for beginners. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars $225.00 bucks for this, you're crazy!!!!!
I paid $19.95 give or take plus shipping for this book a couple years ago. I was very disappointed with the book when I bought it, for the price that I bought it. I can't let someone pay $225 for this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Worth It?
This book was originally $19.95 and worth every penny of that sum! Most of the information included is from previously published Military Vehicle Magazine. A purist would be hard pressed to take much from this, all of the information is contained the G-741 Tech manual. Sorry Dave!

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
If you buy this book with the idea that it will guide you in the restoration of your M37, save your money because it does not do that. There are a few useful suggestions but very few specific restoration tips. The book is worth its original issue price of $20 but not much more than that. It's an interesting read but not a how-to book. ...
