4-0 out of 5 stars Still good in 2005
I used this book to prepare for the SFPD examination one week in advance. The question types outlined in the book were exactly the same type of questions in the examination.Knowing what kind of questions to expect and how to handle them definitely helped me pass the test. The book also has some interesting information about a career in law enforcement. My only qualm with the book was that the questions themselves were not challenging enough. The SFPD exam had more questions that the sample tests of the book. The SFPD exam questions were also a bit more difficult. There is a 2nd edition of this book out.I haven't had the chance to look at it but it seems that it is cheaper and may be a better preparation tool than the 1st edition.Overall a good study guide even though it was published in 1996.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where do they get this stuff???
I bought this book to review for the police exam and completely failed! The examples in the book didn't look anything like the questions in the actual exam.I'm not sure what the other reviewers are talking about, but this can't be the book that they're claiming to be good.It was a total waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book!
I recently purchased the Shooting Incident Reconstruction book by Lucien Haag and would highly recommend it for every forensic scientist who may examine this type of evidence. University's offering forensic science courses, as well as all forensic laboratory's, should have a copy available to their students / practitioners. 5-0 out of 5 stars Review of On-scene guide for crisis negotiators
Good 1st book to read on those wanting to be Negotiators in the Law Enforcement field.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Addition To The Field
Frederick Lanceley's "On-Scene Guide for Crisis Negotiators" is a long needed compendium of technique and definition in the field of crisis negotitations. Mr. Lanceley's vast experience has enabled him to providetechniques based on real-life situations not just theory. The volume isarranged in a concise, easy-to-reference format which should be a part ofevery negotiator's "Ready Kit". One of the most important pointsabout this book is the fact that it addresses the types of situations faceddaily by police negotiators. Suicide intervention, long a subject ignoredin many negotiations seminars, is given in-depth treatment. In addition, the entire book is an interesting read. His account of his involvement atRuby Ridge is fascinating. I would recommend this book to anyone involvedin the field, police commanders and anyone interested in crisisintervention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Police Sergeant Examination Preparation Guide
I used this book to prepare for the sergeants exam. I did not have long to prepare (A couple of weeks), and it helped me to achieve a strong score on both the written and the oral tests. I would suggest you buy this book. It is one of the reasons I'm a sergeant today!

I bought the book on Feb 3 and received it on Feb 24. Other than that everything was great. Book was great. Anet

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money.
I found this book to be very useful while studying for the Police Sergeant examination. While I did not use the written test section, the section on supervisory theory was useful. However, the oral board section was what made this book an essential part of my study materials. Nowhere else did I find so much useful material on oral boards in one place. I credit this book with helping me attain the high score that I got. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Reference
Criminal Investigation: The Art and Science is an excellent reference book for overall fundamental investigative techniques and specific criminal investigation techniques for specific crimes. I frequently cite the text in the development of law enforcement courses (basic and in-service. The information in the text is current and accurate, which is typically uncommon, as most other texts on criminal investigation simply update a book's cover and neglect the content. I would highly recommend this book as a comprehensive reference book for new and experienced officers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Investigating: what is it?
Criminal investigation is a very poplular subject these days with all of the CSI's and Law an Orders, but what about the facts, what is real? This book is the textbook for my Principles of Criminal Investigations class, part of my Investigatvie Services major in Criminal Justice. It very acuratly illistrates what criminal investigation is about, it is very much about the factual part of invetigations. Also it is not just about investigating the scene of a crime but its very vividly describes crimes and criminals as well as other aspects of the investigation like the psychology and methods invovled in ivertviewing.
1-0 out of 5 stars Filled with dry, common-sense dribble...
I can't believe I'm taking an entire class to cover this material. Much of it is common sense, and what's not...is on an elementary level. The book is dry, & I've read 9 chapters in just over a week. It's seriously lacking!

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 stars: a SOFTcover edition cost self and Mother Earth less
Medium:Book
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photographs of those falsely accused
There are emerging artists whose work tends to emphasize style over substance, of which there are many (Notable examples include Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY artist Anissa Mack, perhaps best known for her performance piece "Pies for a Passerby" and most, though not all, of the emerging artists represented in the recent Brooklyn Museum exhibition "Open House: Working in Brooklyn".). And then there are those who can produce stylishly beautiful work, and make profound statements about culture, society, etc. through their art. Fellow Brunonian Taryn Simon - she studied photography primarily at the Rhode Island School of Design, widely regarded as America's premier art school, while still an undergraduate at Brown - is unquestionably one of these, with a distinctive documentary style which harkens back to Walker Evans's sympathetic black and white photographic portrayals of people in Depression-era America. However, here Simon has worked deliberately in color, using the conventions of commercial fashion photography to create memorable images. Hers is a splendid, mature body of work, replete with much empathy for her subjects; former convicts who were falsely accused and convicted. Each photograph is accompanied with commentary from the two attorneys in charge of the Innocence Project, Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld. Through their Innocence Project, attorneys Scheck and Neufeld have freed scores of people who were wrongly convicted. Simon received a Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography for this project; an award normally given to artists who are in mid-career or further along, not to an emerging artist. Simon's work has been exhibited at New York City's International Center of Photography and P. S. 1 Contemporary Art Center; an international tour of these photographs had its first stop at P. S. 1. As both a fellow alumnus of her college and a fellow photographer, I eagerly look forward to yet another impressive body of work from Ms. Simon. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Outside looking in...
There is so little about this book that involves actual events that the author participates in that I get the feeling it is complete fiction. The dialogue reads like a white guy trying to write how a black guy or a latino guy would speak. There is a preachy quality to whenever the author talks about himself -- "I sinned and I am repenting and I am going to make the world a better place for ex-cons".
4-0 out of 5 stars Inside Prisons
Michael Santos has written an important book for all Americans--but especially those who are concerned about the operation of Federal prisons and the lives of the prisoners. He takes us inside prisons at every level of the Federal prison system and tells us of his experiences in them. His information comes from his own journals, which he has kept since the beginning of his incarceration, and from court records of criminal acts which have occurred inside some of the prisons. The picture which emerges is frightening, with prisoners at the mercy, sometimes, of sadistic guards and prison officials, and of their fellow inmates. There is much which is wrong with the operation of our prison system, and it at last is possible to find credible information on which revised policies might be based.By writing this book, Michael Santos has made a valuable contribution to the prison system and to the citizens of this country.

5-0 out of 5 stars RIVETING, ENGROSSING, FASCINATING = INSIDE: LIFE BEHIND BARS IN AMERICA
This book is the BEST ONE of Michael G. Santos books.I have read each and everyone of his books that are published, to date I have purchased and read, ABOUT PRISON, WHAT IF I GO TO PRISON, PROFILES FROM PRISON, yet this one I could not put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for the Library of both Professional and Layman
The Executive Protection Professional's Manual is an excellent read both for those involved in the profession and those of us who have been on the periferal of such work. Dr. Holder's unique perspective may stem from his extensive martial arts training, his considerable life experience, or analysis of human behavior.5-0 out of 5 stars EPP from the worlds best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Both sides of the story
For most people, the death penalty is a matter of the heart, and whether there are numbers to prove or disprove the belief is beside the point.Thankfully, author Joan Cheever is not most people, and in "Back from the Dead" she has done a masterful job of laying out the facts (documented with a journalist's zeal) and marrying them with a vividly told story of a compelling personal journey. In doing so, she has not only made an important contribution to the national debate on the death penalty, but she has also given us a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fears and Foible in Finding Fellows Having Faced a Death Sentence
Tracking down 589 people is no small undertaking.Ms. Cheever not only does justice to any overwhelming task, but delves into the depths of the Class of '72, who received a second chance at life after having been sentenced to death. While on her journey to find what became of the "lottery winners" winners of Furman v. Georgia, Ms. Cheever touched their souls while exposing her own.In the end the author learns the meaning of forgiveness and becomes a "healer" in justice system wrought with injustice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtprovoking, shocking and brutaly honest...
As a 'Moderate Conservative', my interest in this book was initially based only on two factors 1) the author was a native San Antonian and 2) the statistical analysis approach appealed to the math major in me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellant
I wanted to prepare as much as possible when it comes to becoming a cop. I had got this book because I wanted to learn more and know what I would be getting in an exam. When I flipped through this manual I was in total shock. I have never seen or read so much detailed information in my life. You can't go wrong with this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars VERY Informative
The best thing that you can do for yourself is find out what is on the test that you'll be taking. I used this book to study and the test i took couldn't have been further from the topics discussed in this book. It is a great way to get yourself to study better and think more bout the answers you give.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good preparation - even more than necessary
I used this book to prepare for the LAPD application process, and while the practice questions are great in getting you in the cop-mindset, many of them are much more detailed and police-oriented than the real thing. There's a good section that gets you ready for the oral interview, though, which adds value to the book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars And I thought The Lovely Bones was hard to put down...
I rarely find a book I just Cannot Put Down. One of the rare ones was The Lovely Bones--and it wasn't just the plot.It was the language, the crystal-clear voice-in-your-head narrative that spoke and spoke of pain and sadness and resolve. It was infused with a realism and was both beautiful and haunting.Like the lean, hard and seemingly lengthened muscles of a runner, Sebold's voice is discernable above the din of modern fiction yet it is not haughty or self-involved... Hearing her voice is like the moment you know you are going to be really good friends with someone you just met:comforting and clear, it makes you want to lean closer to absorb it.It made me a devoted fan of Sebold as I am sure you are, too.
4-0 out of 5 stars A difficult, but engaging read
I suspect I'm like most people who have read this book.I read an interview with Sebold and she said as she was writing "Lovely Bones" she was struggling with the rape scene.Because she had been raped herself, she wasn't able to write about it effectively in "Lovely Bones" until she had dealt with her own stuff. She put down "Lovely Bones", wrote "Lucky", and then picked up and finished "Lovely Bones."Very interesting.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Incredible and Worthwhile Read, But ...
I was disappointed by the ending. It seemed quite hastily concluded. I wanted more details on her recovery process--how she was able to save herself. That would definitely help readers who have been through similar experiences. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a book for all criminology enthusiasts
Criminological theories is a well written book on theories, evaluations, and applications. The chapter I found most interesting was on Deterrence of Criminal Behavior. The delivery time on this book was exceptional.I would order from this company again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid it unless it is required for a class
This book has a lot of promise, but fails to deliver. Most currently debated theories are covered in this text, but none except social learning theory receives adequate consideration. Akers presents only modified, interpreted versions of the most important foundational works in the field. This would definitely not be a book for beginners, and anyone seeking a solid basis for knowledge should look elsewhere.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource
I have been doing a lot of research into changing my career to that of a PI.This book is the best primer I have read.It is very straight forward, easy to read and understand, and gives examples from the author's experiences. The author does a great job of de-mystifying what a PI does, and does not, do.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the field, especially at this price.
