5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for your blue belt
Everyone who wants to write OO code needs to read this book. No, let me re-phrase, *must master* this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars An approach to this software classic
"Design Patterns" (GoF = Gang of Four) is a signicant and, in many ways, a difficult work for the modern reader (me) to digest. The material in this book is highly self-referential: to understand a particular design pattern, it is important to be familiar withmany similar, if not all, design patterns.
4-0 out of 5 stars A classic for OOP - truly a Gem - not much else to say
Like many of the typical Computer Science classical texts, you've got to read it, if only to say you read it :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Living The Truth
Louis Rodriquez writes the truth! I know I lived in the Lomas during the time Louis writes about being in Garvey school and at Mark Keppel. I lived in Lomas from 1959 to 1972. Fortunately, I survived the madness in Lomas. This was our life as we knew it, the gangs, drugs, girls and of course the parties. It brings back memories of our life in the barrio L's...

5-0 out of 5 stars I read it, re-lived it and loved it!
Well written book by one of my favorite Authors.Louis is an awesome person who is committed to his work and community.Book can be used for anyone looking for a real life reference to the history of Chicano/a Gangs in Southern California.I read it, re-lived it and loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Always Challanging
Many young people face the same perils Luis Rodriguez shares in this auto biographical coming-of-age story; some overcome these challanges, while others succumb. But, how many rise as far above them as Rodriguez has?

1-0 out of 5 stars Self-serving and poorly written...
I bought this book hoping to gain some insight into the mind of a violent criminal street gang member. What I found was page after page of Mr. Scott rationalizing his behavior, and in fact glamourizing the life of street gang members. After reading this book, I am convinced that Mr. Scott has no remorse for his behavior, nor does he accept any responsibility for his actions. On top of the author's self-serving writing, the book is difficult to read because of the grammatical errors that are the books only consistent trait. This one is a must miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing book
This book chronicles Monster Kody Scott's life as a 8 Tray Crip in LA. The first part of the books is his life in the gang; the middle of the books is his time spent in prison, and towards the end is when he becomes more of a black revolutionary and stops banging. Honestly, I thought the most interesting part was the first part when he told of his life in the gang. But for those who like inspiring stories, they will really like the ending. Awesome and well written, very intriguing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sanyika Tells His Story
Monster is an auto-biography of the the ex-Eight Tray Crip member "Monster" Kody Scott, or as he's known now, Sanyika Shakur. This book sheds light on the harsh realities taking place in inner-city America, telling a story that few would most likely not live to tell. Sanyika holds nothing back whilst telling his story. He lived with a single mom, and he had five other brothers. There was no man in the house. At the tender age of eleven, he was initiated into the Crips (Eight Tray Crip), after he belted rival gang members with eight shots from a sawed-off shotgun. After he was initiated, Sanyika earned respect for himself by commiting terrible acts of violence and always being on his guard. This earned him the name of "Monster".

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading & heavilly biased. . .
I admit to having been a HA associate during the 1990s.Many of the HAs I met were good people, and most seemed far more squared away than the average 1%er.I also met a few former members -- some of which were out "in bad standing" -- who were degenerate dirtbags. Thus, I read this book with an open mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars the missing links
Great book, and even if only 10% of it happened, the average person would be crapping their pants in those situations. What I'd REALLY like to read is those thousand+ hours of tape transcripts. It would likely provide some of the missing links to further details as mentioned by other reviewers here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, quick read!
Doesn't get bogged down in a lot of details; however, because of this, it feels a little 'bare bones'...but this is probably because of disclosure issues and confidential materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Bravery
Thank God for William Queen!!!I just finished his book -Under and Alone - and am amazed at what this man went through to get the bad guys. What a great human being!I loved that part at the end of the book where he writes about knowing that these were serious bad guys that needed to be put away - but there was another factor - after living with them for 2 1/2 years he had witnessed it, lived it, felt it, and understood the love that these guys felt for their brothers, him included. That gave me goosebumps. There was a thin line there for him.Not everything is black or white.Sometimes there is that gray area.I hope that he remains safe and can have happiness in his life.He certainly deserves it!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, get out your hooks and your light weight yarn. It's hookin'time!
I really enjoy the patterns. I like that they use classy yarns yet list less pricey ones for each project. One of the best innovations in the pattern instructions is that the knitting gauge of the yarn is included so you can go into your stash and make substitutions for the yarns. So far what I've tried out has been accurate. I appreciate the careful editing that equals less frustration and potentially unfinished projects. And since I hardly ever follow a pattern as written, I really like the sections on "Variations". They inspire me to invent even more alternatives.
3-0 out of 5 stars A BEGINNER BOOK
I was expecting some new ideas and projects I would want to make.Instead this is a good book to give to a teen who wants to learn to crochet.Half the book is a "how to crochet" explanation of stitches and the projects are rather basic, even the ones that are sort of new in style.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book makes me WANT to crochet
I am a knitter and spinner and will soon be adding crochet to the list. sure I know how to do a basic chain stitch but that is about it. I have tried to learn crochet from other books and failed. However, this book lays it all out in plain English. I can actually keep my sides even!

3-0 out of 5 stars fascinating.
Pretty good read, it did repeat the info quite a bit over and over.
4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!
A very graphic and well written book.Gives you the real inside look at the hells angels motorcycle club and and other clubs as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3 can keep A Secret ... an outstanding read!!
I thought the book was an outstanding read and in fact have read the book several times.I have no idea why some reviewers want to critique Mr. Lavigne's writing style or "vulgar" word selection so harshly. He is, after all, writing about the Hells Angels.I feel these folks are missing the main point of the book which is to give the reader and insightful look into the bike gang, their rituals, codes etc.To this end, Mr. Lavigne does an outstanding job!I found the book to be a very comprehensive portrait of the most famous of biker gangs. If these readers were so offended by some of Mr. Lavignes language, choice of words whatever then they need not be worried with researching the Hells Angels!Simply put, the book is by far the best and most insightful look into the inner workings of the Hells Angels that I have ever read - and I have read most all of the books on the Hells Angels out there.I strongly recommend it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting History
An interesting bit of history on the worlds largest motorcycle club
3-0 out of 5 stars insights into a secretive organization from the man who knows it best
This may be the most difficult review that I have written to date because I began reading this book with a certain amount of prejudice. I have ridden motorcycles for about forty years and I began at about the time that the Hell's Angels motorcycle club was coming to national prominence, so it seems as though I have been hearing stories of the Angels all of my life.
3-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read
Bottom line up front, this book is well worth reading. The writing style is neither peotic nor amateurish, but it is blunt. He is biased, but makes no efforts to hide it.He has strong opinions, and is not afraid to voice them.In other words, reading the book is like sitting in a bar listening to Sonny Barger tell you about his life over a few beers. It is a refreshing perspective.

1-0 out of 5 stars Below Average
Plain and simple, this book is terrible. The fact that the author went through the hood of L.A did not make up for how poorly this book was written. I can tell off the bat that this book was written by a white author who knows nothing about gangs. Advice: do alot of research first then the interviews. (She lucky it wasnt after the Rodney King incident when she stroll through the hood).Would you buy a documentry book about the stock market written by a gang banger?

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting characters, caring, non-judgemental narrator
The characters that were the voices in this book were very interesting and had great stories. There was everything to wannabes, baby homies, OGs and those on their way up to OG status, ex-homegirls that were blinded by being shot in the neck, a young teenage lil' homie who drove himself to the hospital after being shot in the stomache, and the families that lived with 'em. I really liked hearing their dialogue, a brief history of how gangs may have came about, and a listing of the different sets over the different streets. The narrator was a strange element to the story because she was just a white older lady that obviously had never done anything remotely gangster in her life. However, she was non judgemental, caring, and sincere, so I couldn't be too upset about that. All in all, great book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Point of reference
Inspite of all the hype and controversy centering mainly on Leon Bings race and sex, this book is an valuable resource for gang research if for no other reason than it was the vehicle which led to the Monster Kody autobiography. There are many holes in the structure of the book in relation to use of slang but that is understandable considering the author was obviously out of her element with this project.Once again I would suggest reading this title for the early account of Monster Kody who was just emerging from one of his many jail stints. The interview with Kody is far and away the highlight of the book even if the cover photo is a pathetic attempt to portray the danger of a murderous gang member as sexy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Important addition to the literature on street organizations
Few books are currently available on street organizations (commonly referred to by sociologists, anthropologists and criminologists as "gangs") that present both an insider perspective and outsider analysis, and place these social formations into the context of both the contemporary and historical variables that cause their formation, and direct their transformation into radical political organizations.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good, but not as brutal as it is made out to be
THis book is pretty mild...the scenes in which the boys are abused by the guards are mostly cut off and non descriptive. one of the spotlight reviews points out the last part of this book is probably fantasy, and I tend to agree. I would think that it would be next to impossible to pull off what they did to those guys, and even if they did try to switch it like they did, then i would think the way they did it would have nothing to do with their trial results. I think that this was a good attempt and a great story, but would have worked better as a fictional piece...read it and see for yourself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Shades of Frey
I agree with M. Cormier's review and believe this is partly true. It was an interesting book, well written but does not seem to be entirely true. It could be, but after James Frey's "memoir" all the non-fiction books I read are suspect. Non-fiction will never be the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars Meat, Potatoes, and Salad
Sleepers is one of those books that the reader can get through very quickly. It is difficult not to become involved with the characters and with the plot. The book is well-written, and incredibly powerful. I give it four stars, not to take anything away from the book, but because I don't consider it to be a perfect book. It was quite an enjoyable read, and I definitely recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, realisticand spiritual book
Father Greg Boyle has done miracles that not everyone can do in working with youth at-risk, especially Latino gang members of East Los Angeles (the "mother-island" of gangs). It ONLY takes a special and unique person to attract and aquire respect from the so-called "lost human-beings" that are involved in gangs. Not all adults see these latino youth as "human beings" whatsoever. Father Greg deserves MORE recognition for what he has done in the Pico/Aliso neighborhoods. Highly recommend this book. May GOD bless "G."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece
Fremon's account of Father Greg's early 1990's work in Boyle Heights, CA. is as moving and powerful a work as one is likely to read. The fact that this book is out of print (currently) is a crime!

Not such a hot book. I would read other books on the subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars sing loud and cash the check
A rat is a rat......is a rat. I guess this guy and others like him (see Henry Hill and Sammy the Bull) feel if they can make some money getting average citizens to read about their exploits maybe they can justify (to themselves) their betrayal of their friends and brothers. You'd be wise to save your money and not make these kinds any richer...especially one like this who is short on details when it comes to his association with the Angels. In my opinion he only used their name to help sell the book. Don't bother. Read Sonny's instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Watching Humboldt Park from the boat house.
While reading this book I felt like I was watching a movie from the boathouse that sits in the middle of Humboldt Park by the "lake"-facing Kedzie St. It took me there. It was really captivating.

5-0 out of 5 stars very important book
As the author of the Chicano gang novel FOREVER MY LADY on Amazon.com, I have to endorse this book. It is so important to see the reality of people living in the Chicano and Latino gang life. It is a group of people often ignored and looked down upon but who have heart and soul and this book helps you understand why they are the way they are. They are misunderstood but nevertheless alive and real. -- Jeff Rivera (Author of FOREVER MY LADY on Amazon.com)

3-0 out of 5 stars I thought it was a good book
Before I read this book, I came and read these reviews, and I wondered why are people talkin about monster's book, when this is about Colton's book. Now after I have read this book I see why, this book is very similar, just replace killing crips with killing bloods, I could have even sworn I remeber some passages that are the same,(EX. How the prisoners treated the busters in jail), and there are some people mentioned in both books, besides that, I thought it was an intresting book, it gives very detalied descripsions about what goes on in the life of a crip. A lot of people don't realize that growing up in gang neiborhoods, being in a gang isn't so much by choice, my father grew up in San deigo, he had been around some of the gang members, lil brothers and cousins. When he was old enough, he was asked to join the bloods, when he said he'd think about it, they chased him home, everyday until he decided that he would join. These books give a lil insite to their world and lets people see what's it really like, in these streets, and gives knowledge to the young ones hoping they would choose a different path. Although I thinks Mosters book is a better read, this book is also very good, if intresed, you should definetly read one of these books.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's Ok. Nothing special.
The book was ok, I was not impressed. The reviews I read prior to reading the book was mostly positive. IMO the book did not live up to the reviews.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good BookAbout A Terrible Lifestyle!
Ice T sets the tone for "Inside the Crips," writing in the forward that "masculinity is at a premium in the 'hood; wealth is defined by violence, aggression, and strength.Gang wars are no stupider than other other war.Crips are even more powerful in penitentiaries - prison doesn't teach good citizenship. It teaches violence."

AND I FEEL IT IS ALL WANT YOU WANT OUT OF LIFE. WITH PRAY, ANDWITH GOOD PEOPLE BEHINDYOU WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENT. AND IT GOES TO SHOW AND THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT JUDGE MATHIS DIDWITH GODS HELP. BECAUSE HE HAD TO HAVE GOD IN HIS LIFE IN OTHER TO GET AS FAR AS HE GOTTEN. I LOVE THE MAN, HE MAKES MY DAY. AND MAY GOD CON'T TO BLESS HIM AND HIS FAMILY. AND FROM WHAT I HAVE READ SO FAR I LOVE THE BOOK. HE IS A ROLL MODEL I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO MEET HIM . ONE DAY4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for People from All Walks of Life
The courage Greg Mathis exhibited in turning his life around is phenomenal! This book not only serves as inspiration for inner-city young people but anyone who has taken a wrong turn in life. This wrong turn could be criminal in nature or it could be a mistake in choosing a mate or career.Whatever the mistake or wrong turn, Greg Mathis' life proves you can "turn it around."I know Greg on a personal basis and met him through my friendship with his aunt Eva and her son, Walter.I can truly say Greg is a compassionate and down to earth man who freely shares his blessings with family and friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Miracles Do Happen In The Innercity
I was originally drawn to this book about Greg Mathis because while in an airport traveling from Chicago back to LA, I happened to catch his tv show.I was impressed by his style in the courtroom so when I heard that he had written a book about his story, I thought let me pick it up.I had no idea about his background so at first I was physically afraid of this young Greg Mathis in which his book went on to described.I continued to read because I kept thinking when is the miracle going to happen.I was not sure that he would ever become anything more than what he was at the time, a thug and a criminal. Finally, more than half way through the book, the miracle happened and I found myself rooting for the young man, Greg Mathis. In short, his story touched my heart in a different way.Although I'm an african american women and grew up in Chicago during the 1960s and 1970s.The life that Judge Mathis described in his book was foreign to me.But I was so impressed with his determination, preseverance, hard work and his ability to never give up.While I don't have a lot of street smarts I found myself thinking perhaps I had been more judgmental in my past about the young boys who grew up in the project because I totally saw the change in Judge Mathis in this book.I'm glad that I read it and have been sharing with others that it is definitely a must read for all ages. The bottom line is anybody can be anything they want to be if they work at it and become discipline.Kudos to Judge Mathis and other african american males who have decided to allow the miracle to happen in their lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning edition of a most evocative vintage NY photo study
This new edition of Bruce Davidson's classic study of tough New York youths in the 50's, marks a most welcome and sure-to-be-collected photo book. The reproductions and layout are superb, rich and textured, and theaccompanying text is illuminating. And this doesn't even begin to describethe superb images Davidson, one of the world's great "streetphotographers" captures here. In all, without much of Davidson's workin-print, aside from "Central Park," this is one that artphotograpahy fans and those interested in New York's colorful past willsurely want to own. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I was the setup man, they followedmy instuctions
except they were to have two vans and had to leave back close to 2 million in gems. I also am the only one left alive. Book is close to the truth, but does have a few errors, they called me to add to the book, said the Jimmy help, right, no way and I said I am still alive because of not talking about it.I did get into the witness program without testiefying on anyone. I talked to Jimmy in the MCC in nyc.I am planning on writing a book on what the Government did to me, setting me up to get killed, sending me to Lewisburg after I was cooperating. But I was protected by the bad guys. After 5 weeks there I went to the Warden and told him I was cooperating and he called the FBI who was behing sending me there, and said to me you are going back to NYC and don't ever let anyone send you here again and this went on and on four the next 4 years.
