This is not a fun book to read. Absolutely not.

3-0 out of 5 stars Family Life on Alcatraz
The sum of Jolene's authorship as both a historian and author is notable. As a first effort, I think this is a good book and worth reading. As you will see as a developing premise in my reviews of Alcatraz books, this is a great book if you are interested in really basic Alcatraz Island history.I am a UCLA graduate student and decided to tackle Alcatraz as a study work project and have read just about every book about Alcatraz Island Penitentiary.I give Jolene's effort due credit since she has been exposed to life on Alcatraz and the circumstances of the escapes and the players throughout her entire life.As a child living on Alcatraz she was exposed to the stories told by the officers and her father who was the associate warden during the infamous Frank Morris and Anglin Brothers escape. This is a good book that gives the reader some idea to what life was like as a resident and child who grew up on Alcatraz. It also has some great views and summaries of escapes and then famous inmates.
5-0 out of 5 stars Babyak Is Premier Alcatraz Historian
Jolene Babyak has written three excellent books about Alcatraz Island. This one is an easy read with no real heavy or serious material. But the purpose of the book is to describe what it was like as an Alcatraz resident. And Babyak again delivers.5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Memoir!
I found this book to be a fascinating memoir of an aspect of the island that not many people stop to consider.Ms Babyak demonstrates both a superior knowledge of Alcatraz history, as well as a unique viewpoint of an island resident that is neither guard nor inmate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More Florida Post-Conviction History:
First an introduction: From 1986 - 1992 I was employed as an investigator at the Office of Capital Collateral Representative (CCR) in Tallahassee, Florida, where Scharlette Holdman worked as the supervisor of the investigators from October 1985 - March 1988.
4-0 out of 5 stars As Objective as possible
The recent actions by former Illinois Governor Ryan have raised many questions about capital punishment in the United States.I have read or heard several commentaries that have suggested the new focus on the death penalty may lead to its abolition. As an opponent of capital punishment, I hope this is true. But I doubt it.5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb, Even-handed History of Capital Punishment
It's a testament to the balance found in Stuart Banner's history of the death penalty in the U.S. that I'm still unsure where he stands on the controversial issue. If I had to take a position, I would say that he's probably against it, but even after reading his three-hundred page book I can't be sure. That's a remarkable feat for a subject matter that immediately unbalances many people.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Chilling Expose of the American Penal System
Elsner reveals startling truths about the hell to which a citizen of US may be legally doomed.Liberal or Conservative, I recommend this book to anyone worried about his or her freedom - not freedom from Iraq, North Korea, or Islamic militants, but freedom from an out-of-control justice system right here in the homeland.
1-0 out of 5 stars blatant errors - poor scholarship
I picked this book up a couple days ago with a few others, hoping to learn about America's prison system.I think our prison system is horrible and I was hoping that this book would give me some more information on the topic.Unfortunately, in the first twenty pages of the book, Elsner claims that America imprisons 704 people per every 10,000 citizens. If you do the math, that equals 7% of our population. 7% of our population is greater than the population of the State of New York.According to this author, there are more people in prison in this country than live in the State of New York.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, just excellent!
Well researched, well written and a topic we need to read about. Alan Elsner has shared the real world of prison behind bars to which we subject our neighbors for crimes involving consenting adults or petty thievery. He's shown us that prisons are disease ridden places that are excellent schools for making good people with bad habits into bad people and making `bad people much worse'. He's also brought a very real danger forward in showing us that America is allowing violent felons to remain on the streets because the potheads are taking all the beds. Totally Bas-Ackwards to the goal. States highest in incarceration are also highest in poverty and we are milking the last of life's blood from these people. He's also provided an excellent argument for abandoning the private prison industrial complex and ceasing the attack on urban America and the mentally ill. As someone who works in business and in finance, it bugged my eyeballs when I realized what government is doing, allowing prisoners for profit. I've worked 32 years in a profit driven capacity and doing this with human beings, given what I know about shareholder driven environments, is unconscionable in my mind. To intentionally profit from another's pain and misfortune is heinous. America has 5% of the world's population and 25% of the worlds prisoners. We have over 1,000 prisons and 7 million people under penal control (2004). Over half of them non-violent offenders whose crime involves consenting adults (ie: life in prison for introducing a buyer to a seller of home grown pot in Indiana) or petty thievery (ie: 25 years to life for stealing vitamins in California). Communist China and Russia have less prisoners than we do and China has 5 times the population. We lead the world in per capital incarceration and the shear volume of our population that we incarcerate for long periods of time for victimless crimes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Augustus Hill's Diary
I loved this book.I am a fan of Oz but not a huge fan.The book gave a strong voice to the show and I loved that way the diary of Augustus Hill illuminated the episodes and the shows without being a plain episode guide. It was well written and absorbing.I thought it was quite entertaining and led me to understand better. There are also non-fiction excerpts from books, newspaper articles, etc. which illuminate how the prison system in America functions.Good book.A good read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was expecting.
I've been a huge Oz fan for many years now and it greatly excited me to get this book, but I was sadly disappointed with it after reading the first 20 pages. This book is nothing but an extended episode guide, which is something you can find anyplace for free online. It also has detailed describtions of each episode until the end of Season 5, but unfortuanately, it looks like most of these describtions were just blatantly copied off of hbo.com and placed into this book. If even a die-hard Oz fan like myself didn't enjoy this, then I'm not sure you will either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Never ceases to amaze
I'm currently reading the book. It's good so far, but a lot WAS left out b-c it's only from Augustus' point of view. A lot of good stuff is missing. It's interesting seeing things from Augustus' view. It's good and I am able to understand better what Augustus means b-c I watched all 6 seasons. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars NEW MEXICO NOT MEXICO
Kelly J. Barnett needs to get the facts straight about the riot. The others that posted reviews knew the riot was in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Not Mexico.People back east need to know that New Mexico is part of the UNITED STATES.STOP BEING IGNORANT AND GET EDUCATED ABOUT THE STATES WITHIN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warning! This book may make you angry!
I vaguely remembered when this riot took place, hearing it on the national news. They never really went into great detail, as to why the riots took place. However, this excellent book goes deeply into the corruption, the physical blackmail, and the awful conditions taking place inside this prison. This book will make you angry! This prison was a trainwreck waiting to happen, and those in power knew it. This book discusses specific events leading up to the riot, the overcrowding, the lack of proper amnentities, the threat of violence not only from inmates but from guards as well, all of these and more contributed to the horrific conclusion of that three-day-weekend in hell. 5-0 out of 5 stars I Used To Be An Officer In This Facility
Great book for those interested in such things. I was a corrections officer in this facility years after the riot. But knew officers and inmates who were present during that incident. The book follows the event very accurately. Good read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars powerful book
It is great to read a book that gives a view into such a marginalized population. The insight Braman brings through his presentation of these real people with complex problems is very powerful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing stories, great analysis
I'd read Braman's other work in books edited by Marc Mauer and Jeremy Travis. This is much more in depth, but presents the same basic arguments. Instead of the tired poltical arguments about the criminal justice system, it tells the stories of actual families. The stories are moving and the families are presented "warts and all." The arguement of the book is that, by undermining family formation and community cohesion, mass imprisonment is actually exacerbating social disorder.
