4-0 out of 5 stars Rock solid reporting
Dwyer succeeds in putting together a complicated jigsaw puzzle, piecing together the final minutes of the World Trade Center by conducting hundreds of interviews with those who escaped this tragedy. This book, however, is far more than a page-turner, full of fascinating stories and anecdotes.Dwyer lays out the vast problems and dysfunctional historical relationships between the New York Police and Fire Departments. These problems should have been identified and solved years before, given the fact they were encountered during the 1993 WTC bombing. Not only were the interdepartmental problems not solved, they were exacerbated by Guilliani's insistence on placing an umbrella emergency services department right at the already-targeted ground zero, within one of the WTC buildings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Memories restored
I read 102 Minutes because I had to bring back *that day*.After five years of politics and posturing, I needed to remember how I really felt on September 11, 2001, not the day after, but on the day itself.Dwyer and Flynn have accomplished that.As so many nowhere near NYC that day, I watched on live television, frozen as I tried to imagine the people inside the Twin Towers.Through interviews and publicly available transcripts, Dwyer and Flynn have created a coherent narrative of precisely that, as they describe what happened both for many of those who survived, as well as for many who did not.I especially found myself returning often to look at the pictures of specific people as I read their stories. We truly do not need fiction.
5-0 out of 5 stars "If history is to be a tool for the living, it must be unflinchingly candid."Dwyer & Flynn
Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn did the Old Grey Lady (NYT) proud with an excellent and very CANDID account of the final 102 minutes of the WTC complex. Some of the stories we are familiar with, many though, were a complete revelation. Obviously the terrorists are completely responsible for the deaths that day, and the bravery of the first responders knows no equal, however once again bureaucracy and lack of official and building communications doomed many hundreds more unnecessarily.I especially appreciate the skill in detailing the horrors witnessed that terrible day without resorting to gratuitous descriptions of many of the victims. The refrain displayed somehow honored the victims. It is hard to imagine that we on the outside looking in knew far more than many of those in the middle of the situation for a variety of reasons. This account, along with Stone's WTC the movie, United Flight 93 and American Experience 'Center of World' all tell the same story from different perspectives, each horrifying in their own way but very important nonetheless. I consider this book a MUST READ. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Limited in scope
The exercises are good, but limited in number.I've also had problems with the exercises appealing to a wide range of kids. The book is useful, and the philosophy that teens are doing their job by having their developmental crises is a positive change from the "disaster" of adolescence that we hear so much about.I would recommend it for those working with basically high-functioning kids with "normal" kinds of difficulties/crises.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical and creative approach
This book is noteworthy for its pratical approach. Along the book you can find lots of creative exercises to do with your teenage clients. I consider these activities an excellent resource even for individual therapy (someare very easily adapted), because they are ready to use (the authorprovides already made materials appropriate for this developmental phase),self diclosure eliciting and presented in a game-like fashion, what isappealing for the adolescents. The activities are divided into severalthemes, related with adolescents problems and concerns. Some of thesethemes are not easy to approach within the group due to some resistance, insecurity and fear of rejection by other members and by the leader. Itsnecessary to know how to get to core of the hurting issues without makingthe group feel threatened. This is what this book is all about... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Or Does it Explode?
Everyone should have the privilege of reading a Mike Davis book. His wide-ranging interests and his aggressive writing style more than make up for his tiresome Marxist politics. In fact, Planet of Slums retains less class-struggle than his usual work, in favor of basic humane appeal and outrage.
4-0 out of 5 stars Troubling!
"Slum:"over-crowding, poor housing, inadequate access to safe water and sanitation, air pollution, inadequate trash collection (and thereby high rat populations), insecurity of tenure.Davis begins by informing readers that within a year or two the earth's urban population will outnumber the rural. In 1950 there were 86 cities with a population greater than a million; now there are 400, and by 2015 there will be at least 550.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Vision of Malthusian Dystopias
Sometime during the writing of this book - 2005 - the global urban population surpassed the global rural population. It has been estimated that both populations stand at about 3.2 billion. What is startling is that Mike Davis has calculated that the rural population has reached its peak and will begin to decline by 2020, and that all future world population growth will be in cities, primarily megacities (8 million or more) and hypercities (20 million or more). The total world population is expected to peak at 10 billion in the year 2050.If I'm still alive, I will be 95.I hope to experience peak global population, even though my actuarial tables would indicate otherwise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Life Not Survivor or Beauty and the Geek
Unlike the ramblings of 'Montezuma's revenge' reading something that is REAL (Against Tall Odds: Being a David in a Goliath World) and not a real life show (Beauty and the Geek; Survivor) has more to offer a person about life and the hardships it has to hold. Unlike some people not all people are subjected to everything that life has created. Some people are not involved with small people or for that matter even met one. I for one see a perspective of how someone (Matt) sees his world and how he deals with it. Yes the similarities are there but there is also a different point of view.
5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
Matt Roloff is a great author and a great man. his book really gives insight into the human condition and how to overcome it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Which is real, this or the Discovery Show?
I just watched the Discovery Channel show "Little People, Big Dreams" on the Roloff family, so I'm not sure what is more true, the show, the book or the fluffy local newspaper articles. After two minutes of the show, you totally forget about "size", their story is Everybody's story.

5-0 out of 5 stars insightful
This very well written books offers insights about who we are as a person and why we are the way we are.I found the book very comforting because it reinforced what I was feeling inside. This book also gives advice about how to change.I think that even if you don't come from an "abusive" family you should read this book because I know that everyone can relate and learn from it in many ways.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nobody teaches this stuff. Read it!
Excellent. A bit dated but timeless content. The beginning and end speaks to AA type meetings but it's not the main focus of the book, co-dependency is, which just about everyone deals with growing up. Quick read. There are a few short stories featuring animals that are sprinkled betweenthe chapters, adding levity and a moment to escape and explore how the new information may serve you. My favorite, The Goose, whose parents told her not to leave the pond despite her feeling sick but she finally did leave and discovered she was right. The family unit unknowingly puts family members into positions and then keeps them there unable to see the dysfunction. Once one family member took action leaving the others behind the others eventually followed. If one family member is acting out and you don't know why it is not always the issue of the one who is acting out, look beyond, look to yourself first. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow
Illuminating and frightening. We all have baggage and until we find a place to safely store it, those closest to us are also burdened with it.The ideas in this book promote taking responsibility for our actions, looking into the motivations of those actions, and examining the source of our attitudes without placing blame on anyone. It's a great book about growing up to be healthy and facing one's demons without guilt. It's a relief to read this material and know that it's OK to feel a certain way, and even better to feel that healthy change is possible. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most thought-provoking books I've ever read
This book is both meticulous and very clearly written. Every time I had, while reading Conley's analysis, a nagging question in the back of my head, he went on to address it in far more detail than had even occurred to me. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Ideas
This book expands the research base that identifies wealth as a key component of mobility, and an important factor that explains why blacks and whites have divergent outcomes. However, Conley may be overemphasizing the role of wealth, and forgeting that race is still a critical issues. In fact, his models show that wealth is only a small part of the story. A great deal of the unexplained variance in Conley's models may be attributed to discrimination in society. Although Conley mentions this briefly, more attention needs to focus on this aspect the issue. Nevertheless, the discussions of wealth are rich and well developed, making this an important addition to the literature.

1-0 out of 5 stars problems abound
The analysis is sound. This is to say, the examination of the relevant history and current structures, coupled with an examination of effects, is accurate and valid. However, the argument for implications is unsound - dangerously so. It seems that those driven to understand precisely why some people are faced with more challenges than others are usually willing to go the next step - to argue for engineered adjustments, blind to the fact that such programs engineer even more odious, systematic inequities. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Million Little Pieces - James Frey
This is a book written from the heart; filled with deep soul searching and honesty. I'm familiar with alcohol and drug addiction. I'm familiar with treatment centers. For those of you who know this road - this book touches home. For those of you who don't - don't be the first to throw that proverbial 'stone'. I've heard the reports of the 'untruths' regarding this publication. I read it anyway. Pain is an immense ocean. The depth of that ocean is different for each of us. This 'message' could be a gift for many; a starting point, a different way of looking at life and it's unkind lessons. This book offers an open hand to start you on a journey towards reality; toward clarity. For those of you who belittled this book - be it truth or sensationalism - be cautious! You never know what life holds for you or yours around the next bend. The information offered here, the idea of taking that 'first step towards recovery', the process of becoming HONEST with yourself and others, could well be the salvation for someone you love. Yep, it's got some rough language. Did you really expect anything else from a drug addict? Common! Gimme' a break! Get real with yourself! Keep an open mind and dig into this book! It's a good read!
5-0 out of 5 stars Frey touched my heart
I have always wondered what happens in a Treatment center. How do people stop being an addict? What do they do all day? What kind of people are in a treatment center? This book answers those questions and shows that there's hope for every addict. I think it's an excellent read. A gift to all addicts. It's exiting, I couldn't put it down and I thought about it quit a lot.

1-0 out of 5 stars As authentic as a daytime soap opera
I'd heard the buzz (both pro and con) and thought I'd take an independent read. I was dismayed with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The secret is out
very interesting look at the mystery that is delta force. this book is written by the founder and first commanding officer of the force and represents an intriguing look at what was formerly kept secret. look into the world of some of our country's most daring and important servicemembers. this blow-by-blow account reads like a novel, and sometimes you wish that is all it was.

5-0 out of 5 stars Page turner. Essential for Spec-ops library.
I first thought that this book would probably be a bit dull, since it didn't have a lot of combat experiences in it, but is mostly about the formation of Delta. But it's now one of my favorite reads. A real page-turner, it only took me a couple weeks to get through it. I admit that it's enjoyment is probably limited to those with a serious interest in special ops. It has an honest and candid tone that lacks the the egoism of Marzcinko's book about SEAL Six. If your interested in learning more about Delta, I also reccomend reading Eric Haney's book, and Blackhawk Down. All three are very interesting and informative books, that take you inside, are hard to put down, and inspire profound respect for those who serve their country in this capacity.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to sell the Army a new idea
"Delta Force" should be required reading for every ambitious careerist working for a large organization. Wearingcamo fatigues or gray-flannel suit, this fine treatise tells the ambitious what it takes to get things done in a large organization--in this case, the largest organization-the U.S. Army. And what it takes is a very smart, relentlessly driven maverick, just what these organizations abhor. Maverick General Billy Mitchell was court-marshaled for proving to the Navy that one aircraft could take out the fleet's largest ship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Government Bungling - Again!
Gertz begins by relating how, prior to 9/11, the CIA failed to help an Afghan leader trying to rally forces against the pro bin Laden Taliban. As a result, he was captured and executed.
3-0 out of 5 stars A little right biased
This was a informative book that outlined what Gertz thought was the reason Sept 11th happened. Though these were problems left over from countless decades of neglect to the intellgence community Gertz seems to protray this as the cause of failure. It is a combination af manyy things and to point your finger at one aspect of the pie is ludicris. The book does make a good point on how politics get in the way of policy. "It is what you do and not what you say, if your not part of the future than get out of the way." Stop pissing around and playing favorites and get the job done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reminder of how 9.11 was a complete failure for
both the CIA and FBI.Mr. Gertz, the excellent correspondent for the excellent (meaning not anti-Bush/republican NY Times/Wash. Post/CNN/CBS/ABC,etc.) Washington Times does an excellent job in explaining how 9.11 could have been prevented.Examples include the lack of adequately trained translators, CIA apprehension in "penetrating" al-Qaeda, and the 1970 era of anti-CIA political machinatiions that decimated the US intelligence. Also, Mr. Gertz details the lack of attention paid to the intelligence community during eight years of Bill/Hillary/Madeline/fat Al Gore/Sandy stolen documents Berger/et al.Binny struck in 93, 95, 96, 98, and 2000 (and many aborted/thwarted attacks) and all we got from that administration was some cruise missiles and an exploded milk factory in Sudan (while cowardly running from Somalia). This all led to the tragedy of 9.11 (and now the madman Kim Jong-il.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Deplorable
Let's start with being the nephew of Sigmund Freud.Mr. Bernays witnessed the coming of the industrial revolution in full and his ideas were thus shaped believing that even men operate only as mindless automatons in the larger machinery of society. The author believes that people are incapable of forming their own opinions due to the complexity of modern life.Heck, these hickams from Topeka just came off the farm. Surely we in the elite must help them make their choices.
4-0 out of 5 stars Propaganda and the manufacture of consent!
Bernays, the Guru of prapaganda who pioneered the technique of shaping and manipulating public opinion which he named "engineered consent," has written an iteresting book on this topic that might be worth reviewing. His book has superficially tackled the propaganda techniques, and gave the reader a taste of the mass manipulation machine.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening.
Propaganda is a word synonymous with the likes of Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and the contemporary conspiracy theorists' attitude toward western government. Edward Bernays does try hard to defend propaganda as simply a method by which relevant information is propagated to a mass of potential customers about a product's desirability within context, so that a purchase is more likely. He compares the power of propaganda tothe advertising methods prior to 1928 and gives examples of how the sale of pianos and velvet were made successful by using propaganda.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, and Not as Muddled as One has Claimed
This book is very informative, interesting, and entertaining.I've recommended it to people both within and outside the CS and IT communities w/o reservation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Security or Liberty? Both!
I first read about Bruce Schneier in an eye-opening article by Charles Mann in the September, 2002 issue of The Atlantic Monthly. It seems that you don't have to make the false choice everyone is agonizing over between security and liberty. You can have both.
4-0 out of 5 stars Puts things into perspective
The title of the book refers to the steps to take after fear is sensed. To move beyond fear is to understand it, how it affects you and why, and what you can do about it.And that is what the book addresses - what things do we need to secure, from our personal interests, to national interests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not "business-as-usual" this book will change your practice!
I am a substance abuse therapist (part-time) and a Senior Juvenile Court Officer (full-time) for 17 years working with adolescents here in Lansing, Michigan.I am also strength-based (asset-building) in my personalpractice approach with teens. I believe that we've heard the call beforeto work from the successful side, the resilient side of people, but we werenever given the techniques as we are now with this book. That is what Isee as the most promising aspect of this current strengths movement...theone-two punch of mindset and techniques. Any helping professional owes itto themselves to read this book.It is a real career changer. Mostasset-building is aimed at the community level or agency/policy level.Iam greatly concerned with asset-building on a one-to-one level ofinterpersonal work and how this can be used to approach people for moreeffective work. It looks to what the client can do vs. can't do, whatthey've been successful at rather than what they've failed at, what theyhave, vs. what they don't have. It runs counter to the "medicalmodel" of deficit-based work that centers in on"flaw-fixing." I have published several articles and dotrainings for raising motivation and cooperation with adolescents in thejuvenile justice system through strength-based strategies. Most of my work, and this tremendous change in my practice, came from this book and thefirst volume published in 1992.Among many methods in my training I usea joke about a drunk man to change mindset. It's an old joke but veryapplicable:In the middle of the city, a beat cop encounters a drunk, crawling around on his hands and knees seemingly looking for something atnight, directly under astreet lamp. When the cop stops and inquireswhat he's doing, the drunk responds, "I'm looking for my car keys thatI lost in the bushes!"The cop laughs and says, "Hey buddy, ifyou lost your keys over there in the bushes, why are you looking here underthe street light?"To which the drunk replies indignantly, "Boyare you stupid, it's too dark to look for them over in the bushes!!" Old joke. But, we in the helping professions are so much like the drunkman. We look for the "keys" to clients problems in the area ofgreatest illumination whichis always the PROBLEM, the failures, what'smissing, wrong, etc.We have specialized tests to look there, interviewingstrategies that look there, that is where all the attention is placed. Yetthe "keys" are in the dark, in the"bushes" whichcertainly represents anyone's strengths, talents, past successes andperseverance (etc.) .............so why no methods to look in these areas? That's where strength-based practice comes in to give methods to elicit andamplify these areas. Check this book out, I believe you'll be thinkingand working differently after you finish. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars There are NO coincedences.
After you finish reading this book you will come to the same conclusion that I have.THERE ARE NO COINCEDENCES.Decade after decade the same people and organizations always seem to "pop" up in major world events. This is not by chance my friends.Read your bible.Don't take Jim Marrs's word as gosple either, research some of this stuff yourself to verify the contents of the book.Second best book he has written!
