5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading
Who should read this book? Anyone with a conscience and a brain and a beating heart who cares about the United States and its place in the world. Anyone who is frightened about rapidly disappearing concepts like truth, justice and due process. Anyone who understands that our fragile democracy is vitally dependent not only on verifiable elections, but also on a voting public well informed by aggressive, independent, skeptical journalists rather than embedded reporters who regurgitate self-serving, manufactured reality and trade truth for access.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still an Important Alternative Voice That Needs to Be Heard
Unlike the proverbial lone voice in the wilderness, Amy Goodman's is sounded every day on Democracy Now! with a partner, Juan Gonzalez. Even in New York City, Ms. Goodman and Mr. Gonzalez are hardly able to raise their voices above the media trash heap filled by the likes of Rupert Murdoch and Fox News, the increasingly sensationalist CNN (whose kidnapped baby can we bloviate about today?), the disappointingly ineffectual New York Times, the superficial Brian Williams, and everybody's oh-so-cute CBS newcomer, Sally Fields (You like me! You really like me!). Oops, make that last one was Katie Couric. Democracy Now! languishes in NYC, nearly invisible on public access cable every morning at 8:00.

5-0 out of 5 stars Same Book As Audio In Media With Infotrac
This text is a broad-based approach to audio for radio/TV/film, and music recording. The emphasis is on audio for production students rather than for engineers, and the text covers informational, perceptual, and aesthetic aspects of sound as they apply to each stage of the production process-from planning to post-production.

5-0 out of 5 stars An industry primer
This was my college text for Broadcasting in 1984/85 and I taught Radio Production from this book. I am a video editor (Avid) and a freelance audio engineer having mixed/recorded over 500 music performances. I STILL reference this book. It is easy to understand, direct and thorough; maybe the only textbook you might keep.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does anyone remember the old green Periodical Index???
Okay, confession:I don't own this, YET.(It's marked "highest priority" on my wishlist.)But reading reviews complaining about the royal annoyance of DVD swapping, I'm amused and slightly ticked off.Hey, folks, back in the day, if you needed to look up articles in the New Yorker, you had to go to a building in town called the "library".If you wanted to take an article home to read later, you were happy to be able to make a smeary, smelly, expensive photocopy.
5-0 out of 5 stars There are always quibbles
Despite the all the minor quibbles you read this is a very worthwile package. Goodness, look at the 20s articles! They are historically worth the price of the package alone, and they are all at your computer! Do a bit of web surfing and discover ways to put the enourmous set on your hard-drive if you wish. It's worth the cost if not from Amazon than from the New Yorker page itself at one-half the price.
1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T buy this!
ZERO stars. If you live in Europe, forget about it. This thing only works on PC's with an all American time & date system. Unless you want to americanize your computer, it's not usable.

5-0 out of 5 stars STARTACHAIN REACTION !
Barrie Zwicker's carefully researched masterpiece is an eye opener for open-minded people with compassionate hearts and bright reasoning that haven't yet been searching for the truth about 9/11. Barrie Zwicker provides convincing evidence that beyond any reasonable doubt the truth about 9/11 is that we don't KNOW the truth about 9/11. And Barrie Zwicker is definitively right to suggest that it is high time to ask elementary questions about the many anomalies in the official story of 9/11, since the American people and the families of those who died on 9/11 deserve the truth that we do not yet know. Therefore it is undeniable that only a truly independent investigation of 9/11 can provide an answer to the crucial question if there was a wider conspiracy (- if this is the case, those responsible for 9/11 should be indicted for treason and complicity in murder and those who covered up these crimes should themselves be indicted as accessories after the fact. On the other hand, if the new investigation finds that the government's current story is essentially correct it would be imperative to assign responsibility for the inconceivable failure of the air defenses to protect the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, since so far nobody of the allegedly "incompetent" people has been fired or demoted or court martialed - shouldn't there be accountability?).
5-0 out of 5 stars Zwicker, Barrie, Towers of Deception: The Media Cover-up of 9/11.
Five years ago and still in the news? This is because the issues are painful and because there is stillso much suffering arising out of the horrific events of September 11, 2001. Much healing has yet to happen. Conspiracy theorists have had a wonderful time with 9/11: 'The CIA did it,' 'It is Reichstag 9/11,' and so on, but if you speak to many Americans in this vein they still respond with pain and then outrage or simply, rage.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different take on convergence
I can't say enough good things about this book. Jekins critiques "traditional" convergence theory about converging media and argues that the instigator of convergence is the need for new patterns of consumption, not production. Each chapter addresses how fans of a particular program reorganize their media experiences to better participate in the discussion, analysis and, at times, production of future episodes or events.
5-0 out of 5 stars The King of Culture
Henry Jenkins has a natural knack for taking any topic and making it instantly relatable and intensely gripping. I was privileged to have received a preview of part of this book before its publication, and I can honestly say that it's as entertaining as it is informative. Here he tackles completely new territory - the ever-evolving world of media and technology and how it impacts our society and the corporate world. This proverbial David & Goliath struggle for control of new media, the challenges of the inherent legalities, and the birth of new mediums; all of this complexity is laid out in the pages of 'Convergence Culture', and who better to guide us through this mish-mash landscape of new media than one of our foremost experts on media and popular culture?

    Editorial Review

An absolutely brilliant analysis of the ways in which individuals and organizations of the media are influenced to shape the social agendas of knowledge and, therefore, belief. Contrary to the popular conception of members of the press as hard-bitten realists doggedly pursuing unpopular truths, Herman and Chomsky prove conclusively that the free-market economics model of media leads inevitably to normative and narrow reporting. Whether or not you've seen the eye-opening movie, buy this book, and you will be a far more knowledgeable person and much less prone to having your beliefs manipulated as easily as the press. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars More conspiracy theory propaganda
Wake up and understand who controls the media and who they vote for.Why would these Dem voting owners and employees possibly push a Republican Agenda? Can you possibly answer that?
    5-0 out of 5 stars ed herman's a genius
Ed Herman has often written quietly behind Chomsky's bigger name but he's no less important a messenger and translator of American media and foreign policy bias and hypocrisy. Manufacturing Consent is a withering analysis of these "inconvenient truths."Herman and Chomsky's important writings, both as collaborators and individuals, have been largely ignored by the mainstream press for the last 40 years, affirming, ironically, their very thesis. If you read this book undefensively, putting aside your biases, you will experience Kierkegaard's "fear and trembling." If you read Ed Herman's other books, you'll appreciate why he's not more widely known, but should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very important book
In Manufacturing Consent, Hermann and Chomsky present a very powerful institutional analysis of the media. The authors put forth a "propaganda model" which outlines various ways in which the media filter information to serve the interest of the powerful elites.Although the propaganda model makes sense from a logical and theoretical standpoint (given the economic constraints faced in the news industry), the real power of the book are case studies that provide near bullet-proof support for the model. In fact, the model is introduced in the first chapter, while the remainder of the book is a series of case studies.Even the most skeptical reader (as I was) will be pretty hard pressed to poke holes in the model after the gauntlet of case studies it is put through.Because this book tells us so much about the objectivity of the news we receive from the agenda setting news sources, I honestly believe that Manufacturing Consent is one of the most important books ever written.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Bathroom Book
Before I begin, I must state, that I have read this book... unlike many Amazon 'reviewers.'
3-0 out of 5 stars Though not in complete agreement, I nodded A LOT!
I bought this book after seeing Mr. Goldberg on the Today show.I was not sure what I would think after reading his book and was surprised to find that while reading, I was nodding more than shaking my head.I liked Mr. Goldberg's style of writing - similar to how I reactively think - but I did find him a bit repetitive. He also made a lot of sweeping generalizations that made me roll my eyes and skip ahead a couple paragraphs.
2-0 out of 5 stars Unenjoyable
This hardcore conservative did not enjoy this book. The book is filled with a wealth of eye-opening information on significant people that I did not know but should (like Hugo Chavez's new best friend, Noam Chomsky), but the reading is so laborious and draining that I cannot recommend it.It has none of the light-hearted fun that we often get from Rush Limbaugh.Rather, it brought to mind the dark experience of listening alone to Michael Savage in a bad mood after dark. The cheeky title is misleading - this was a joyless book to read. ... Jeff Cohen's new book Cable News Confidential offers readers a rare behind the scenes look at the 24 hour cable news world.Cohen describes his experiences at CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC. He offers many personal stories, which were always engaging and often quite humorous. They painted a clear picture of how conservatives control and frame the news we see on cable. While I have read many other books on this subject, I have never seen a book that offers as many crisp, clear examples of the way today's cable news industry operates.

1-0 out of 5 stars Deplorable
Let's start with being the nephew of Sigmund Freud.Mr. Bernays witnessed the coming of the industrial revolution in full and his ideas were thus shaped believing that even men operate only as mindless automatons in the larger machinery of society. The author believes that people are incapable of forming their own opinions due to the complexity of modern life.Heck, these hickams from Topeka just came off the farm. Surely we in the elite must help them make their choices.
4-0 out of 5 stars Propaganda and the manufacture of consent!
Bernays, the Guru of prapaganda who pioneered the technique of shaping and manipulating public opinion which he named "engineered consent," has written an iteresting book on this topic that might be worth reviewing. His book has superficially tackled the propaganda techniques, and gave the reader a taste of the mass manipulation machine.

Propaganda is a word synonymous with the likes of Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and the contemporary conspiracy theorists' attitude toward western government. Edward Bernays does try hard to defend propaganda as simply a method by which relevant information is propagated to a mass of potential customers about a product's desirability within context, so that a purchase is more likely. He compares the power of propaganda tothe advertising methods prior to 1928 and gives examples of how the sale of pianos and velvet were made successful by using propaganda.

I swear, this book is the worst book ever for Mass Communications because it's just a bunch of articles about what might be the case of mass media in the future. If i didn't need the book for a college course, I would neverhave bought it ... Read more

This book was OUTSTANDING.The only thing that pains me about it is that I bought it out of bargain bin.I would have gladly paid full price.5-0 out of 5 stars Only a little out of print...
This powerful and vital book is out of print - but only under this title. "Deadly Persuasion" was released in November 2000 under the new title "Can't Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel". Under that title, the book has never gone out of print, so it is easy to acquire. And you definitely should acquire it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Deadly Persuasion
A brillient and stunning consideration of how advertising affects society. Rather than the more popular route of blaming problems of the modern world on entertainment media, Kilbourne convincingly argues that it is, indeed, the unnoticed and unceasing stream of advertisments which is harmful. Required reading for anyone who ponders modern sociology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best single-volume book on film history
If you are interested in film history on the whole, please, give yourself a treat by purchasing this book.It is not cheap but it is worth every penny.I had it after a course in film history and despite being someone who usually sell or dump away my texts after graduation, I find it very hard to give this one away.Boy, am I glad I did not.As one's scope and experience in world cinema grows, so too does one's interest in this book.Bordwell and Thomas's style is academic but always enthusiastic, and theirs is the most comprehensive account of world cinema in English (pre-war Japanese cinema, anyone?).I have not found another general film book on world cinema history to match, and I will certainly be purchasing its third edition (what I have is the first) if that ever comes by.

5-0 out of 5 stars comparison
here's a short comparison I made between the following 3 film history books:
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, nicely packaged
I used this book in a film studies class about four years ago and I kept it because of the wealth of information. For the first time I understood the different epochs of film not only in the U.S. but also around the world.I was introduced to a wider variety of international film and the work of Eisenstein, Renoir, Kurosawa, and others.I highly recommend this book for the concise language, easy explanations, and beautiful black and white and color reproductions from many films. This book is a page turner. ... Editorial Review

"Propaganda," says Noam Chomsky, "is to a democracy what the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state"--in other words, the means by which leaders keep the masses in line. In this slim pamphlet, he looks at American propaganda efforts, from the warmongering of Woodrow Wilson to the creation of popular support for the 1991 military intervention in Kuwait, and reveals how falsification of history, suppression of information, and the promotion of vapid, empty concepts have become standard operating procedure for the leaders of the United States--both Democrats and Republicans--in their efforts to prevent citizens from raising awkward questions about U.S. policy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fast Read, Arm youself with knowledge and Awareness
This book is an excellent read. I finished it in one sitting. Chomsky compares the textbook definition of what a democracy is to the modern reality of the state of democracy Americans live in yesterday, today. We will continue to live in the dark if we don't start paying attention. Right-Wingers will say this book is just attacking the current administration, untrue. This book takes an equal approach to all administrations to have forged an aggressive propaganda campaign during their stay in the Oval Office. Propaganda you say? No, of course not...especially in our democratic society- WRONG Propaganda has been implemented for decades and it is only more revealing now with this current Bush administration. It doesn't matter if your pro or anti Bush. This book makes readers aware of what an administration can do (Democrat or Republican)in times of fear like the time we live in now...Read

5-0 out of 5 stars The bewildered herd must be tamed
Noam Chomsky explains perfectly how propaganda spectacularly achieved to turn 'real' democracy, where the public participates meaningfully in state affairs, into `spectator' democracy, where the public is occasionally allowed to elect one or another member of a specialized class.
5-0 out of 5 stars a must for Americans
if you are an American person really seeking to understand how American media provide a baised coverage of US foriegn wars this is the book for you.
