Editorial Review

An absolutely brilliant analysis of the ways in which individuals and organizations of the media are influenced to shape the social agendas of knowledge and, therefore, belief. Contrary to the popular conception of members of the press as hard-bitten realists doggedly pursuing unpopular truths, Herman and Chomsky prove conclusively that the free-market economics model of media leads inevitably to normative and narrow reporting. Whether or not you've seen the eye-opening movie, buy this book, and you will be a far more knowledgeable person and much less prone to having your beliefs manipulated as easily as the press. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars More conspiracy theory propaganda
Wake up and understand who controls the media and who they vote for.Why would these Dem voting owners and employees possibly push a Republican Agenda? Can you possibly answer that?
5-0 out of 5 stars ed herman's a genius
Ed Herman has often written quietly behind Chomsky's bigger name but he's no less important a messenger and translator of American media and foreign policy bias and hypocrisy. Manufacturing Consent is a withering analysis of these "inconvenient truths."Herman and Chomsky's important writings, both as collaborators and individuals, have been largely ignored by the mainstream press for the last 40 years, affirming, ironically, their very thesis. If you read this book undefensively, putting aside your biases, you will experience Kierkegaard's "fear and trembling." If you read Ed Herman's other books, you'll appreciate why he's not more widely known, but should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very important book
In Manufacturing Consent, Hermann and Chomsky present a very powerful institutional analysis of the media. The authors put forth a "propaganda model" which outlines various ways in which the media filter information to serve the interest of the powerful elites.Although the propaganda model makes sense from a logical and theoretical standpoint (given the economic constraints faced in the news industry), the real power of the book are case studies that provide near bullet-proof support for the model. In fact, the model is introduced in the first chapter, while the remainder of the book is a series of case studies.Even the most skeptical reader (as I was) will be pretty hard pressed to poke holes in the model after the gauntlet of case studies it is put through.Because this book tells us so much about the objectivity of the news we receive from the agenda setting news sources, I honestly believe that Manufacturing Consent is one of the most important books ever written.

4-0 out of 5 stars TV melodramas as a technology of modern self-making
I have no firsthand knowledge of Egyptian TV dramas, and I read this book as an introduction to Egyptian contemporary society. This is a serious scholarly work, based on extended fieldwork and with firm grounding in cultural anthropology. At the same time, the book is inspired by a feeling of sympathy and respect for the many women that the author interviewed or spent time with: village dwellers in Upper Egypt, household maids and nannies in Cairo, as well as professionals engaged in the making, diffusion or commentary of TV dramas.

Missing from this book: Mt ST Helen's eruption on 5/18/80, Passing of Ronald Regan,Space Shuttle Columbia should be added in the next edition. Regular broadcasting was inerupted for these stories. Otherwise this book is worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like history you will want to have thisbook
Perhaps one of the most innovative ways to study and share history, We Interrupt This Broadcast contains not only information on 43 of the most important events of the 20th century but also actual audio tracks from the original radio broadcasts. The stories told and broadcasts heard range from the Hindenburg explosion to the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan's Surrender, Lee Harvey Oswald's Assassination, Martin Luther King Jr.'s Assassination, Apollo 13, the Kent State Massacre, Nixon's resignation, the shooting of President Reagan, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the O. J. Simpson saga, Princess Diana's death, the 2000 election, and finally the September 11th attacks, as well as 29 other historically important events. Each event is described in detail including important facts leading up to the event and the effect it had on the U.S.We Interrupt This Broadcast is very highly recommended and should be in the library of everyone who loves or teaches history.

I have a previous edition of this book.It covered the Diana death, and I believe that is where it stopped. My complaint with the book is only that, as the topics progresses closer to current times, the interruptions became less "spontaneous."Read more

Editorial Review

You've got to love a lawyer who advises, "Don't make your lawyersrich." Entertainment lawyer Brooke A. Wharton provides an authoritative and, yes, entertaining primer for the beginning entertainment writer not just on the legal andbusiness issues of writing for the industry, but also on how to get a career jump-started.The first section covers copyright, libel, and contracts, so that if you can't "controlthe exploitation of your scripts and written work ... at least [you'll] know when you'rebeing screwed." The following section delineates the murky differences betweenthe roles of agent, lawyer, and manager. The gist of it is that you don't need all three, butwhich ones you need depends on the type of person you are and the type ofagents/lawyers/managers they are (industry insiders are not prone to job-title limitations). The next section has a series of interviews with writers, agents, and a producer, all ofwhom help to enlighten us about the various writing jobs the industry offers, from film totelevision to cyberspace. (If you're surprised to learn that "most writers working inthe film industry do not make their living from the sale of a spec screenplay," I'vegot a good deal for you on some land in Florida.) Finally, there are lists of competitions, fellowships, internships, and agencies. And what about jump-starting that glamorouscareer? Contacts, baby. Contacts. And wouldn't you know, if you ain't got 'em,Wharton's got great advice on how to make 'em. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars #1 BOOK FOR FILM & TV WRITERS
There are a lot of books out there on writing for the entertainment industry, but this was the one book that got me started.A lot of writers tend to pass around gossip and poor information, but this book set me straight from the beginning, and is now joined by Wharton's website/blog: brookewharton.com(rated in top 10 for film blogs). This is the one book that anyone writing for film or television should START WITH. I'm mystified by a previous reviewer who said that Wharton doesn't talk about the WGA (there's a whole chapter on the guild), and also that she doesn't discuss acquisitions vs. development (it's called spec sales vs. assignments in the 1st 10 pages of the chapter on writing for film). Clearly this person couldn't have read the book. If you need real answers, buy the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BOOK WHICH STARTED MY CAREER
After graduating from film school, I had no idea how to start my career as a writer in the film industry."The Writer Got Screwed" not only showed my how to start my career, but showed me the different kind of careers which exist for Writers in the Entertainment Industry. Most books don't explain what WRITERS working in the entertainment industry need to know: THIS BOOK DOES. If you want to work in the legal department of a studio, take classes in copyright and contracts. If you want to work as a writer in the entertainment industry, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU.

5-0 out of 5 stars To Bud Paxson with Gart Templeton
Your Book is Living Proof that Character and Morality is Everything!

5-0 out of 5 stars A primer on success in business, without forsaking God.
"Threading the needle" is a swift reading book, whose title refers to the Biblical passage (Luke 18:25)in which a wealthy young man questions Jesus on how to have eternal life.Jesus answers, "selleverything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure inheaven. Then come follow me",When the man heard this, he became verysad, because he was a man of great wealth.Jesus looked at him and said"How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed it iseasier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man toenter the kingdom of God."As a founder of Home Shopping Network,Bud Paxson has enjoyed amazing financial success, but despite his riches, his life was devoid of the love and mercy that only can come from arelationship with Jesus Christ. Paxson's determination to have a strongrelationship with God and business success, is a model for every businessperson, born-again, or not.As a Jewish believer in Christ, I intend touse"Threading the needle" as a guide to growing my own businesssuccess and will recommend it to all whom I do business with.

1-0 out of 5 stars Vanity Book
If you are looking for an instruction guide on how to manage reporters ... you are going to be as disappointed as I was when this book arrived in the mail. The essential message from the author, who tells you he is a reporter on the cover of his book, is primarily that we should talk to reporters. He gives very little real insight on how to deal with aggressive reporters who will do anything to get an "angle" on a story.I wish I hadn't purchased it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem
This book is brimming over with useful nuggets on how to deal with reporters. Stauffer shows how the real world of small and mid-sized media markets operate on a daily basis. Most of his insights are still hihgly relevant taoday, nearly a decade after he wrote the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is not easy
Al Jazeera is giving us a vivid and moving picture of a New Arab World in the making. There is no way to go back in times. This media channel is succeeding to keep one step ahead of many others advancing, foreign or local, TVs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very enlightening
Al-Jazeera is the all-Arabic TV news channel which burst on to the international scene in the wake of September 11 and the war in Afghanistan. Its unfettered access to that country during the war and its showing of the bin Laden tapes made it an automatic force on the world stage.Based in the Gulf state of Qatar, it came from the remnants of the BBC Arabic TV service. With the help of startup money from the Emir of Qatar, Al-Jazeera was to have complete editorial independence. In a part of the world where the press is usually government controlled, Al-Jazeera is not afraid to get specific and name names. At one time or another, it has been criticized or condemned by seemingly every government in the Arab world, for broadcasting things that the local government would prefer not be broadcast. Every local editorial of condemnation and every denial of press credentials to Al-Jazeera reporters just increases its audience all over the world by satellite. One of the things that Al-Jazeera is most known for is its talk shows, especially a nightly, two-hour show called The Opposite Direction. Two guests appear on the show, with totally opposite opinions on a certain issue, and with help from live phone calls, the sparks fly. Even by American TV standards, things get pretty loud and lively. Arab governments have noticed, and have begun imitating the format on their tame and boring government TV channels.Even though Al-Jazeera is an Arab TV channel, it has tried very hard to be impartial, hosting members of the Bush Administration, after September 11, and government officials from Israel. For those who want to decide for themselves if Al-Jazeera is a legitimate news broadcaster or a terrorist mouthpiece, this book is highly recommended. It's comprehensive, clearly written and is quite enlightening.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raving Reviews Accurate
All the reviews I've read for this book have been unequivocally complimentary. One newspaper said it should be required reading for Bush's entire cabinet! Quite bold, but rightly so. After reading this book, I came to the realization that everything Al-Jazeera is courageous enough to air, my own country's media is petrified of. I wonder why our government is so afraid of a democratic Arab world? While the dozens of titles coming out on the Middle East are regurgitating the same history and concepts, this book is a refreshing new look at a MODERN Middle East, not a primitive and orientalized one. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Drugs not cyberspace
Under the guise of being a "theory" and "lifestyle" view of the communities arising around cyberspace, this book bats around the usual suspects - chaos theory, new cultures, modern life - and then degrades into a comparison between computer use and drugs. I will not deny the role drugs, specifically marijuana and LSD, have in computers, but to claim cyberspace requires much talk about drugs because it is a similar experience (seeing pretty images and designs in front of your face, even if they're not "there" in real life) is a bit of a stretch. Because the author spends his time discussing drugs, hippies, alternative lifestyles and other tangentially-related dreck, he fails to honestly explore hacker culture or even those who are advancing the concepts of cyberspace as something other than a consensual hallucination. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone except a researcher, as with the exception of a few pop quotes from famous computer and drug users, it's contentless and a moderately tedious read.

4-0 out of 5 stars indexed historiographed and forgotten
In 1994, Doug Rushkoff set out to write an embedded, analytic travelogue linking a series of countercultural trends dealing with emerging networks and internet technologies. Instead of conducting technopunditry from the sidelines, Rushkoff got into the fray and followed around ravers, hackers, performance artists and writers whose philosophies emerged around a new surge of technoutopianism; linked inextricably with paganism, spirituality, and Eastern Philosphy. His aproach echoes the Tom Wolfe school subjective reporting, learning the lexicon of the object of study, trying to speak the language and reveal something about its psychology. What results is some snappy, breakneck prose colored philosophically and poetically by chaos mathematics and cyberpunk literature. This makes this book eminently fun, readable, and exciting. It also makes much of its proposed social and political uses for technology widely inaccurate. In a way, ten years removed, Cyberia should be appreciated now more than ever. We know better. And all of the wide-eyed fantasizing about decentralized spirituality and some wonderful fin de siecle millenial rapture spurned on by virtual reality are no longer dangerous or deluding, they can be seen in context, as thought waves that are spilled out of more optimistic time periods with exponential technological growth. The connect the dots game that Rushkoff plays is pretty astute, as well: the hippy connection, the second wave optimism that the 90s proposed to reconcile the "defeat" of the 60s, the fulmination of rave culture around these ideas that arrived in Berkely. A good book to read this book against would be Escape Velocity by Mark Dery, which is a little more "down to Earth", covers some similar material, and contains a counterpoint to Cyberia. Rushkoff himself has distanced himself widely from the rhetoric used in this book, but even this does not discredit this as a seminal text when looking at the viewpoints of subcultures built around technology.

4-0 out of 5 stars an enjoyable read
Rushkoff takes the reader on an elegant tour de force of the vast realm called "cyberia." With an uncanny ability to infuse humor and insights into his subject matter, he never lets the reader down.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare is Full of Quotes
A careless reading of "Amusing Ourselves to Death" will reveal a string of cliches about the modern era of industry and sense of participation in it: that our politicians are image-focused, "news-of-the-day" is typically useless, and our preachers and teachers are entertainers primarily. This book is hack, if only in the sense that the ideas he presents were of grave concern to Plato. Postman takes that (1) truth is given form by rhetoric, (2) which is defined by the mode of expression, (3) and although historically authors were aware of the distinction between speech, image and text, with the rapid accumulation of new forms of meda we are no longer conscious of how they shape our dialogue, (4) and via the transformation of discourse into image-driven entertainment we are losing the context of content.
5-0 out of 5 stars Desperate Networks
The cover art of headless viewers watching television says it all. My only brush with the late Neil Postman came when he spoke at the university I was attending in the northwest. A breezy east coaster, he was unaware of the need to step on eggs. During the questions, one woman said, "Mr. Postman, how can we help children have self-esteem?" to which he replied, "I don't want them to have self-esteem; I want them to esteem something other than themselves."
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but...
This is a very interesting book where the author builds a solid argument about the "downfall" of culture as we know it ever since we've had access to any sort of communication technology that came after the printing press (he condems the use of the telegraph and anything that came after it, but in his point of view, the TV is the worst invention ever created).

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!!!
Actually, I'm a pre-teen but I'm glad my parents got this book. So many books on music, TV and movies are uptight and not very balanced. My mom and dad and I have made a decision to make better choices as a result of thisbook. I like the way Mr. DeMoss helps us to think critically aboutentertainment and the media. I'll never be able towatch a commercialagain without THINKING about what they're really selling. Three thumbsup!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ALL PARENTS
Unlike books that whine about how bad all music, television and films are, Learn to Discern is a balanced and helpful resource. Tons of real life examples of how to make good choices. We have felt overwhelmed by the roleof TV in our house, and we didn't know how to be fair with the kids abouttheir music choices. Thankfully, DeMoss had the exact advice we needed! Hishumor really helped us tackle a touchy subject in a more relaxed mannerwith our children. Hats off!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for every parent and grand-parent.
I'm glad I found this book. It's about time someone told it like it is with respect to the audio and video media's influence in our's and our children's lives. The author does not come off as one condemningeverything, but logically and factually demonstrates the hold that themedia has in our lives. He provides a valid and timely warning to watchand monitor what we allow in our children's hearts. In reading this book, every parent, young or old, will discover some new and startling facts.Amust read for those parents concerned about the future of their children. I can't wait to read the newer, expanded edition. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Global Media:The Missionaries of Global Capitalism
This is your typical left wing anti-capitalist drivel. The bias is everywhere and there is no reason to most of what is written. This book is a total waist of time for anyone who is interested in a fair and balanced look at the cost and benefits of free markets. How can anyone be so narrow and ignorant as Edward Herman.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This is the second book I've read by MChesney and as with the first one, I found it very informative and important to understanding the ways market forces are shaping global societies on a daily basis. Few people in this country realize the impact of U.S. media conglemerates on other countries. It's too often assumed that what is good for America is good for the world. Well, McChesney and Herman show that it's not. Capitlaist driven media is helping to destablize pubic interests and voices throughout the globe. Owrell's Big Brother is not needed. We simply get from dominate media mergers limited choices about what is happening in the world today. By delivering these limited choices, profit driven media help themselves and other powerful capitalists maintain their own interests and power. Notice, for example, how ABC, CBS, NBC, and even CNN reported the same thing about what took with the recent elections. There's no alternative view, there's only the corporate view. That's what advertisers pay for and that's what the dominate media delivers. The next book I'm reading on this subject is Dean Alger's "Medgamedia," which seems be even more lucidly written than McChesney and Herman's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening, powerful and persuasive
This is by far the best book I have read about the media. The authors explain that the media system has come to be dominated by a few large corporations who use their market powers largely to promote a world-wide monoculture of consumerism. The media companies do this by distributing non-controversial entertainment and infotainment programs. This strategy is funded by multinational corporations wishing to sell their products to ever-expanding markets and supported by the elite classes who benefit the most from capitalist growth. The commercial media companies use their control of broadcast network systems to limit access to alternative materials (especially local content celebrating diversity and alternative, non-capitalist values), forcing consumers to accept the paradox of choice within a narrowly-defined range of possibilities. Meanwhile, as public broadcasting systems falter, the authors point out that citizens who are immersed in commercial media gradually embrace the values of selfish individualism and materialism and tend to disengage from their local communities.
