5-0 out of 5 stars An inexpensive introduction to a master photojournalist
[10/02 UPDATE: "Inferno" seems to have sadly gone out of print. That means this is the ONLY in-print volume of Nachtwey's work available on Amazon. Obviously this book doesn't have nearly the same scope or depth as "Inferno", but it's still much, much better than nothing at all.]5-0 out of 5 stars Want the best in Photojournalism? Go get it Now!
This is a great colection of images of Nactwey's work, covering Civil Wars around the World. The book contains a lot of power, disturbing images that are a good exemple of the best photojornalism made today. Nactwey works forMagnum and you can see his work in Life and Time magazine, Le Monde andother publications. He won several World Press Photos Contests and he is(IMHO) the best photojournalist alive. I cant wait for "Inferno", his next book... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting especially for people already publishing
Very good real-world stories from small independent publishers. In most cases, the publisher saw a need for a book -- on touring New Jersey, or hiking, or buying a horse, or serving educational niches -- and began with the premise of wanting to provide information and ideas not already "out there." What inevitably follows is a collision with the reality of a crowded and brutal marketplace, and "Make Money Self-Publishing" shows the creative ways each publisher pursued to create a livelihood.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not really a "learn how" book
If you are considering self publiching then this is a nice book to have, especially if you are a fan of real life stories. The 14 author/publishers all tell their stories without hype. Most took a very long time to receive a return on their investment and explain but also show that after years they are now all getting paid regularly without having to do an awful lot. I like that the book is realistic in this sense.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't read this book if you don't want to be discouraged!
I thought this book was going to be inspirational with tips and Do's and Don't from other self-publishers. This book made me rethink me self-employment and self-publishing dreams. Read more

Long a familiar face to American television-news viewers, and more recently a familiar voice to public-radio listeners, Daniel Schorr recounts his 60-plus-year career covering some of the most significant events of the last century.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Look at An Incredible Journalist's Career
I have to admit to a certain fascination with news personalities. After all, as a confirmed news junkie, I have faithfully watched all the major netweorks and tune into NPR on my way home from work daily. Therefore, I was pleased to discover this literary gem by long-time TV and radio commentator Daniel Schorr, the seemingly omni-present conscience of the electronic media. Like many of his generation, his is a voice of reason and objectivity in a sea of faces otherwise clamouring for fame and notoriety.4-0 out of 5 stars A Life in Journalism
I was most impressed by "Staying Tuned".This book is Daniel Schorr's auto-biography of his many decades in journalism.Few people have had the opportunity to be the eyewitness to history that Schorr has had.Schorr was present to cover Nikita Khruschev and the De-Stalinization movement in Russia. He was present to cover post-nazi Germany under Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. He was able to cover aspects of the "Great Society" under Lyndon Johnson. Also, he was there during Watergate and was sufficiently critical of the Nixon Administration to make the White House "enemies list".5-0 out of 5 stars Americ's finest broadcast journalist
Before reading this book I already believed that Daniel Schorr was America's finest broadcast journalist. But my admiration has only increased. This book accomplishes what I had only hoped the memoirs of other famous broadcast journalists (e.g. Ted Koppel, Walter Cronkite, and David Brinkley) would.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New (or used) Author, YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!!
I just purchased John's most recent edition and it is absolutely jam packed with every idea you will probably ever need to get your books in the hands of readers. Notice I did not say booksellers because John's advice goes far beyond just getting your book on the shelves. He gets into practically every aspect of promotion and publicity, which is what is needed to sell books these days. John truly is the "King" of book marketing and promotion. He "gets it!"
3-0 out of 5 stars Great for publishers, but...
When I received my book contract, my publisher recommended this book, and I hurried out to the library to pick up a copy -- but I found that it wasn't exactly what I was looking for.If you're starting a publishing house of your own, this is an excellent resource, but it's not ideal for authors.I flipped through chapters full of information that didn't apply to me -- and I often felt that authors were an afterthought, spoken to only in the occasional box at the end of a section.I did get a few good ideas from this book, however, and if you're preparing to promote a book of your own, pick it up from the library and page through it.For authors, I recommend Publicize Your Book! by Jacqueline Deval -- it will give you more of what you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
I am a one-book publisher. About two years ago, when I first began to think about writing and publishing, I read this book.I should tell you that I am extremely thrifty and I only buy books that I will refer to again and again. I'll even admit that I first read the library's copy of this book. However, after I read 1001 Ways to Market Your Books, I immediately placed an order so that I could have a copy of my own.It has been worth its weight in gold to me.It's the best marketing tool for books that I know of, with clear explanations and lots of examples. If you are an author or a publisher, or even thinking about becoming one, I strongly suggest that you get this book. I can't think of a better $20 investment in your book-selling future. 2-0 out of 5 stars CNN: about as bad as Fox News
There was a time when CNN was a channel I watched regularly. Because they're so desperate for ratings, they've decided to ape Fox News. They have the drunk, psycho blowhard Nancy Disgrace. They have airheads like Robin Meade, who wears WAY TOO MUCH makeup and is as phony as the day is long ("Good Morning, Sunshine!" - she's talking to a REMOTE, UNMANNED TELEVISION CAMERA!) and Erica Hill (who wears her hair like as a stiff, UGLY helmet) who try and act like they're actually "there with you"; like they're your "friends". Very deceptive. To their credit, they did fire the bow-tied moron and Bill Hemmer. Thank God Judy Woodruff is gone (Hey, Larry King: FOLLOW HER LEAD!) They never should have hired Soledad O'Brien. It was a horrible mistake booting the sexy Paula Zahn from mornings. CNN and other 24 hr news channels are only at their best when providing live, unscripted coverage, where they don't have a chance to can their comments. Instead of providing REAL news, viewers are subjected to "human interest stories" like young blondes who go missing, exploiting them for all their worth. CNN is the equivalent of "reality" tv - which is to say: GARBAGE. If you want some real news visit Democracy Now - THAT'S worth watching.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Good Book!
See first hand as CNN struggles to be objective in reporting, not as easy as one may think. There are many great stories in the book about the personalities which make up the news. There are lessons in reporting that are very applicable today.I found many parallels to the radio business.I recommend this book to any news reporter who cares about details.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the baselines to the headlines
This is the perfect book for a baseball fan (or a historian with an interest in baseball) to have if he's stranded on a deserted island.5-0 out of 5 stars A must have if you love baseball
This book is awesome... First of all, it's huge - about 18" x 12" and 400+ pages. Each page is copy of a newspaper, going back to 1857, with stories about significant events in baseball's history.Reading the non-baseball stories and advertisements is almost as good as the baseball stuff.I highly recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars For seniors only?
I've bought this book, and I thinks it not so bad. If you're into baseball from 1860 to 1950 this one is for you, but the stories from the 60s to the 90s is not so well covered. It is many pages I would like to have, for example more on expansion teams, player's strike, my favourite team the St. Louis Browns and of course stories about unassisted triple plays. In the 80's section the most stories are about world series winners (but not all, both Pete Rose and the Pine-Tar case is there). I would recommend it for every old baseball fan, and of course fans who like to trace the history. Bam's last game is covered, so is The Ironman, and BoSox first win in the WS are also well covered. Ed Gaedel is also one story that I liked. But the author could have add more pages from the modern times of baseball. If you buy this book, be sure to have a magnifying glass, many of the articles are written in very small types ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating subject receives a debilitating treatment
Simply put, Mr. Smith's writing gets in the way of the subject about which he writes. This is a great 400-page book.Unfortunately, it's 623 pages long.Mr. Smith never takes one word if he can say it in ten. Were he one of the broadcasters about whom he writes, he would be described as "being in love with the sound of his own voice."
5-0 out of 5 stars A classic.
Simply put, this is THE definitive history of baseball announcing, with biographies of the individual broadcasters themselves interspersed with more big-picture observations concerning baseball and broadcasting ingeneral. The book was clearly a labor of love for its author, a fact whichshould make his occasional forays into self-indulgence forgivable. Smithhas a decided bias toward the late '50s and early '60s, the era of his ownchildhood; as the reviewer from Ohio noted, he makes too many criticalcomparisons between the different "Voices" (although THISreviewer misses Harry Caray tremendously and considers Jon Miller one ofthe all-time greats); and he peppers the text with comments derived fromhis conservative political leanings. Nonetheless, the anecdotes arefascinating and the sheer scope of the work is most impressive. All that'sneeded now is a third edition to touch on the entry of Fox into the networklandscape and other developments of the last decade.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview Of A Fascinating Topic
Curt Smith's history of baseball broadcasting on both radio and television from 1921 to 1991 is a must-have for any baseball library and a fun overview of an oft-neglected topic. Many wonderful insights are revealedfor the first time about local and network broadcasters, their comings andgoings and their impact on the game itself.About the only drawback ofthis book and which keeps it from five stars is Smith's annoying habit ofdigressing into his personal opinions about various broadcasters, past andpresent. While this isn't too intrusive for announcers he praises, I forone was offended by his rude treatment of an announcer I grew up with as aYankees fan in the late 1970s and who was my "Voice Of Summer" assurely as Mel Allen was to an earlier generation, in my case Frank Messerof the wonderful Yankees broadcast team of Phil Rizzuto, Messer and BillWhite.Ditto his obnoxious diss at Gary Thorne of the New York Mets andESPN who only happens to be one of the top all-around play-by-play men inthe business today.Such comments are better suited to a media critic inthe newspapers and not to a historical overview and in my opinion keep thebook from being a flawless gem. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but writer...
This book is a good and even thrilling description of the first gulf war and how CNN reporters reported from Baghdad. That being said, this writer couldn't be more self-adoring and congratulatory, or obnoxious. At the end of the book, he compares Bush's intelligence to that of his pet cat. Whether you are a Bush-lover or hater, that is a disgraceful, horrible thing to say about the president of our nation and it reflects Wiener's generally high portrayal of himself and low portrayal of others.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dull from Baghdad
I found this book and thought it would be interesting to see what happened to the press during the war. Unfortunately for me all this author talked about was bureaucratic problems and drinking and smoking. I kept reading thinking that once the war started the book would pick up and at page 275 the war started but the book remained dull. I am assuming that the author is a much better TV producer then author or there is no way he would have a job with CNN.5-0 out of 5 stars A portrait of cooperation, luck, and determination
Live From Baghdad is one of those books that you just cannot put down.Giving the details of the struggle to get the story out before and during the Gulf War,this book is a tremendous personal account of what it takesto succeed in impossible circumstances.Robert Wiener and his crew madeextreme personal sacrifices, sometimes in life-threatening circumstances,to get the story out and beat the competition.A great textbook example onhow to negotiate what you need through respect and patience, being rewardedwith sucess and a place in history.Great anecdotes about life behind thescenes make this a truly enjoyable read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
Moen's writing, classes and lectures have been incredibly helpful to me throughout the years. His books are a comprehensive guide to layout and design and I recommend them to all of my colleagues.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's comprehensive
I found this book useful, and I have been a designer for five years. I didn't have to use the first few chapters because it covers the basics, but I found many useful chapters in the book, especially those on typography, color and redesign. I have also used some of the material in designing sections.

1-0 out of 5 stars Blah blah blah. . . .
Well, having met and been fortunate enough to drop one of Daryl Moen's classes in the past, I can safely say that this book cements his status as a classic example of "those who 'teach' because they can't 'do'."(Oh, sorry, was that sentence a bit too "cluttered"?) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Smashing Newsletters
Thomas Bivins identifies USA Today as a model, with its colorful banner, easy-to-follow page design, full-color photographs, inviting table of contents, and short articles. As FUNDAMENTALS OF SUCCESSFUL NEWSLETTERS guidelines, the author also points to simple graphic design, with boxes, sparingly appropriate illustrations or photographs, rules, tint blocks, and no more than two typefaces, used not only for getting out an entertaining or informative or persuasive message but also decoratively as initial caps, pull quotes, and reverses. He then throws in limiting printing to two colors, with black, dark blue or dark brown giving a quality look; blue, brown, or green screening nicely as a second color; and with colored paper lending a second- or third-color look. Finally, he sees the end goal as a compatible, consistent, unified artwork all in black and white or all in color, with all formal or all informal text layout and with optically weighted sequencing from left to right and from top to bottom on each page of big to smaller, bright to muted, colorful to black and white, dark to lighter, and unusual oddly shaped to usual. It works particularly well to pool the book's information with Barbara Fanson's PRODUCING A FIRST-CLASS NEWSLETTER and Rita and Roberta Street's CREATIVE NEWSLETTERS AND ANNUAL REPORTS. ... I am an editor these days.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Textbook
This textbook is awesome. I've never seen a better textbook. It lays everything out, and makes it simple to understand. It tells you what to do and what not to do in simple language and clear pictures. It's one of few textbooks worth keeping for future use in your career (provided you're going into the newspaper industry)!

5-0 out of 5 stars No customer service
I ordered the hardbound and got the spiral bound, a product worth $12 less. It was then that I discovered there is no way to express a complaint to Amazon: no phone number, no email address, no human help. All that is available is a maze of pre-written web help, none of which includes "credit my account $12, since I don't want to go through the hassle of sending this book back." What's up, Amazon? Don't you want satisfied customers? I spend literally hundreds here each year. This egregious deficit needs to be fixed immediately. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book. ... Read more
