5-0 out of 5 stars Good book to understand quantitative finance
Luenberger was a professor of optimization and his books on that subject are also very good. Clear and Precise. But sometimes he is extremely concise, so that you need to work a bit to completely understand a point.
5-0 out of 5 stars Investment Science must have
Great book, covers lots of material and goes beyond by using the log utility to portfolio growth. Great buy!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the few books I have purchased twice.
This is the best book by far on the theory of finance. The book covers all the important fundamental concepts and develops them into practical models without going overboard and introducing every possible variation on the model.the style is both conversational and mathematical. It is replete with discussions about the material, but it doesnt gloss over the math.I took professor Luenbergers course at Stanford, and it piqued my interest in finance enough to pursue it professionally.(At the time, I was a masters student in electrical engineering.)I purchased several other books in finance.I dont even know where they are now, every time I have a question or need to build a new model, I go straight to Luenberger. This book is so good, I bought a second copy just as a backup, in case I lose my copy and the book goes out of print. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A sound and practical coaching method
Tom Crane goes to the true essence of coaching. He developed a comprehensive coaching method to transform knowledge into performance and action into results. A must read not only for coaches, but also for managers and leaders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaching for Results
This book gets to the "heart" of the matter - pun intended. "Coaching," according to author Thomas G. Crane, "is a healthy, positive, and enabling process that develops the capacity of people to solve today's business problems." Bingo! Crane focuses on what coaches can achieve focusing their coaching on three principles: building a foundation of trust, learning together, and forwarding the action (and the self) forward. This what Crane calls transformational coaching. Consider it to be the art and the practice of helping others learn about their strengths, their weaknesses, and their opportunities for development. Tightly written and with ample diagrams and charts, this book is a treasure chest of ideas of executive coaches and an easy to follow guide for all managers who desire to coach for results. Don't simply read "The Heart of Coaching," practice its principles and you will help those you coach grow and develop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing Skills
As a senior manager with a major international manufacturing entity, I am continually educating my superiors, peers and subordinates about the value of developing exceptional coaching skills. After extensive research, The Heart of Coaching was the written vehicle we chose to develop these skills within our organization.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scary at first, but you'll learn a lot
I must confess the first time I opened the book I was surprised by how mathematical this book is. But as you read on you find that you learn more from this book than from others because microeconomic principles are well stated and proved rather than defined with vague statements. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good coverage on cross-sectional, but not enough of panel data
This book does an excellent job in covering cross-sectional and microeconometric models (Stata codes for all examples in the book are available from UCLA's webside). However, the exposure to panel data is limited. For a theoretical overview of panel data econometrics, I'd recommend Hsiao and Baltagi. For applied work, Edward Frees wrote a good book, although his book is more from the social science perspective (SAS and Stata codes are provided).

1-0 out of 5 stars The best? Not for me (and everyone I know).
Clearly this product is overrated. In my opinion the book is a complete mess, with definitions, propositions and theorems mixed with the main text and not clearly evidenced from it.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Gem
Wooldridge's "Econometric Analysis of Cross Section and Panel Data" is a gem.As a student of applied microeconomics, I found reading his undergraduate book "Introductory Econometrics" is a great complement of reading this graduate text -- especially part I of the UG book (especially the parts of interaction terms, dummy variables); part III (panel data) might be too chatty.I think both of his books worth every penny that I paid.Although, I think Hayashi text is great, maybe it is geared toward time series econometricians. For example, Wooldridge's example of omitted variable bias is clearer to me (using wage-education regression from labor economics and compute the asymptotic inconsistency of OLS estimator with omitted variable bias), compared to Hayashi's simultaneity bias. Both are nice illustration of endogenity, but I prefer Woolridge's text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A clear, concise, and well written text on the economic choices and behaviors of nations
If you are familiar with Mankiw's introductory text "Principles of Economics", you know that he writes in a clear, concise, and as lively a manner as you are likely to find in a text on economics.Since I find economics quite interesting, I wanted more when I read through that textbook. For those of us who felt that desire, Mankiw has updated his intermediate text on macroeconomics for this sixth edition.

Editorial Review

On September 23, 1998, the boardroom of the New York Fed was a tense place. Around the table sat the heads of every major Wall Street bank, the chairman of the New York Stock Exchange, and representatives from numerous European banks, each of whom had been summoned to discuss a highly unusual prospect: rescuing what had, until then, been the envy of them all, the extraordinarily successful bond-trading firm of Long-Term Capital Management. 5-0 out of 5 stars Is Hollywood sleeping?
Disclaimer: this was the first-ever, and so far the only, "business novel" (as I call them), I have read. Hence my benchmark is not other books of the same genre, but literature in its broadest sense.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book and a look at "the Experts"
As an academic & a "Wall-Streeter" & a professional trader (of my own money) I must surely qualify as an "expert."
2-0 out of 5 stars This book is suspect.
I am by no means an economist, and much less an expert on finance, but this book strikes me as a thinly veiled, unsubtle hatchet job on the efficient markets hypothesis.I've seen much subtler discussions of the Efficient Market Hypothesis written for general audiences, enough of them so I can recognize that Lowenstein doesn't get it; he equates efficient markets with "the price that the market offers is always the intrinsic value," and not with "you can't reliably predict intrinsic value any better than market prices themselves do."This is a crucial difference, because it is only by assuming that market efficiency is the first that his attack holds water.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory text
Mankiw's textbook provided me with a solid introduction to Economics. I read the book in high school and passed both AP Micro- and Macroeconomics because of it. Mankiw's description of basic concepts is more clear than any other I have subsequently encountered (for example, economic profits), and his demonstration of practical applications should excite any student (for example, OPEC as an oligopoly). This book should be worthwhile for anyone interested in learning the basics of Economics.

2-0 out of 5 stars This is the Study Guide
The presentation of this book is confusing. The book presented is the study guide to Mankiw's "Priciple of Economics" prepared by David Hakes, not a paperback Edition of the Hardcover Testbook. Caveat Emptor!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Economics
Principles of Economics is an excellent book to introduce you in the world of Economics. In one text book you have the basic intuitive and analytical tools to understand the economic rationality and the way it analyzes human behavior (supply-demand model, consumers, firms and markets, perfect competence, monopoly, oligopoly, monopolistic competition, intro to games theory, externalities). You also have the analysis of the Macroeconomic issues (GDP, inflation, growth, money, international trade, economic policies). In my opinion the Macroeconomics part (2nd part of the book) is not as good as the Micro one, but it is still a good approach for beginners. It explains the basic concepts and the way economic policies affect macroeconomic variables. But, I live in a developing country, so although it contains the basics ideas there are some important issues for developing countries which are not considered. However, considering that this book is just an introduction to the field of Economics, I think this does not seriously affect the quality of the book and the effort made to make Economics easy to understand.

3-0 out of 5 stars Difference between 2001 First edition and 2004 Second edition?
Given that the 2001 First edition is selling for $30 less used than the 2004 Second edition, is there a big difference between the 2 editions.Should I just save myself $30 and buy the first edition?
5-0 out of 5 stars A big improvement
This text is a great improvement over the material the CFA program used in the mid-90s. Since it is intended to provide a survey of basic statistics and their applications in finance, it would be wrong to expect a deep treatise on any one subject. There are many real world applications used to describe the concepts tackled in this book. The learning outcomes listed at the beginning of each chapter provide a road map for the reader so that all salient points will be absorbed. 2-0 out of 5 stars Think twice before buying

5-0 out of 5 stars Deconstructing neoliberalism's peculiar definition of 'freedom'
"A Brief History of Neoliberalism" by David Harvey is a concise and razor-sharp deconstruction of the neoliberal movement. Mr. Harvey convincingly demonstrates that neoliberalism is an ideology that has been wielded to enshrine elite privilege at the expense of people and the environment. Assiduously researched and cogently argued, Mr. Harvey offers a jargon-free and readable text that helps readers gain a greater understanding about the political economy of our neoliberal world and what this might hold for us in the future.
5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful??? Yes, indeed...!!!
Some other reviews described this book as Masterful.., Outstanding!!...and I am just taking a minute to agree with them. This is a solid book. Full of facts and of a profound knowledge of recent history. It simply goes to the core. The neoliberal theory is nothing more than a disguise or a distractionfor taking control and relocate class domination. Why?? Not only for political, racial or financial reasons, but mainlybecause the availability of natural resources ( mainly oil) is going to reach sometime soon a critical point, and then we, the rest of the people, are going to be redundant by the billions...and if this is so, we can forget about financial or institutional solutions to the contradictions that exist within the system or about popular movements, NGOs or whatever other alternatives you could think of...the solutions or better still, the reactions of the dominant elites are going to be hard and applied by military means.... and I think that they are exploring this option in practical ways as you are reading this humble opinion...just follow the news..

5-0 out of 5 stars A Critical Look at the Post-Keynesian Era
The term neoliberalism is usually heard in the pejorative sense, often coming from Latin American leaders such as Hugo Chavez and Evo Morales. The term refers to an international economic policy that has been predominant in policy-making circles and university economics departments since the 1970's.The four faces on the cover of this book (Reagan, Deng, Pinochet, and Thatcher) are considered by David Harvey the primemovers of this economic philosophy.Reagnomics, Thatcherism, Deng's capitalism with Chinese characteristics, and Pinochet's free market policies marked the beginning of new era of global capitalism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for TS
If you are thinking of mastering TS this is the book to start with. Do not get intimidated however with all the symbols and notations, the author does a pretty good job explaining each and every equation. A seperate book is needed for application eg RATs handbook by Enders.

4-0 out of 5 stars A review of Time Series Analysis
The book provides a good overview of the analysis of time series and it also gives a good treatise of the economitric background of the use of estimation methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most careful ecmtx textbook I know
As you may guess from the title, I loved Hamilton's book. I must definitely disagree with all those who find it too technical. Rather on the contrary, I would say. Admittedly, entire pages with greek letters look intimidating at first glance. But what Hamilton actually does is making a huge effort (unlike most of his competitors) to actually explain the details of the derivations, thereby helping the reader a lot. 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it
I have had many textbooks over the years and this is one of the best I have had. Some textbooks I have not even bothered to read but this one clearly explained the concepts it presented and was a great addition to my instructor's lectures. It gave a lot of real life examples in order to show applicablility and I actually didn't mind reading the chapters. The key learning objectives were really good as well as the questions at the end in order to meet educational needs. The online tools available with this book were also essential to passing exams with good grades. It was worth having to buy for my class. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet
Panas uses his considerable success in the field of fundraising to brief the novice to this profession. The result is a pithy collection of principles newcomers can use to develop their own skills and strategies.Included are sample letters and a useful collection of responses to common objections. The author's use of cliches detracts from what is otherwise a valuable primer to the field of fundraising.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Demystifying
Fundraising is both art and science--and Jerry Panas is a master of both sides of the fundraising equation. This is a fast read with practical ideas that anyone raising charitable funds can use.Asking people for money can be terrifying if you're not (emotionally) prepared.Panas walks you through the process and builds your confidence---and makes plain that the act of asking is in itself the victory, because not asking is the failure. This takes the pressure off, and whether the gift comes from the first ask or the hundred-and-first, you're on your way to fundraising success.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for anyone who needs to raise money
In just 108 pages, Jerold Panas explains how to learn to obtain large gifts for charitable causes, whether you know the people or not. He sets down the process, provides multiple "conversations with donors" to help you learn to ask, handle objections and get the gift. In less ant an hour you can be well on your way to raising significant funds for your cause.
