4-0 out of 5 stars Great, Succinct Expose of anti-American Corporate Actions (4.5*s)
Many predicted that so-called free trade agreements, which ignore social, economic, and legal imbalances between First World and Third World countries, would be disastrous for American workers. Senator Dorgan was one of the critics of handing corporations a ticket for a ride on cheap labor, and he and others were right. The book is an easy to read expose of the consequences of free-trade. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, what an eye-opener...
The Senator takes some pretty complex subjects and boils them down so that average folks like me can digest them.I always had the impression that outsourcing was bad and that corporations did some shady things to maximize their profits. Now I'm convinced. This book shows me the money and names names. The truly surprising thing was exactly how much of an accomplice our own government has been.Read it--and vote accordingly.

4-0 out of 5 stars EXPORT GOODS, NOT JOBS!
Senator Dorgan is not one of your wishy-washy politicians. He takes a stand on NAFTA and CAFTA: He's against them.He makes it clear that we're not just sending low-paid work to other countries, but we're rapidly losing our manufacturing jobs. Those are jobs that paid well and provided thousands of Americans with middle-class life-styles.

5-0 out of 5 stars A factual "Must Read" with real stories and real numbers
James Kynge has drawn on over 20 years of life in China as a journeyman reporter for the Financial Times. I read the British release of the book and commend this with enthusiasm. This is a no-BS, readable but fact-filled story of what is really happening in China and throughout the western world as a result, told with finesse and understanding of the deep political and economic impacts unfolding around us. To read it is to arm ones self with knowledge that we all need going forward. It is a red flag warning, but also holds some interesting, ameliorating facts, such the reality that a vast number of Chinese will be swinging to retirement and related cost escalation status in 2040. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
I had the pleasure of taking this class from the author of this class.Dr. Henderson is not only absolutely excellent teacher, he is an equally good writer.I was not an economics major, and was somewhat fearful about taking "Economics of Medicine" as a class, but this book is thorough, organized, and easy to understand. It is an excellent book for economics majors as well as those majoring in other health care related professions who have an interest in learning more about the current health care system and related policies. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Insightful Book Which Really Tells How Customers Spend In General These Days
David Bosshart is highly perceptive about present and future trends in terms of how customers spend their hard-earned money. Customers buy from both on-line and off-line, and have many choices and real time shopping information at their finger tips.
2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Translation, Weak Argument
Many of the rhetorical lapses evident in "cheap" may well derive from a poor translation from the German. It seems as though no effort was made to avoid literal translation - much of the text is awkwardly phrased at best, completely non-sensical at worst. For example, immigrants who cross borders to take low-paying caregiving job such as nurses aid, nanny, etc. are described as being in the "love services", a phrase that has a distinctly different connotation in English than that which its author seems to have intended, judging from context anyway."Love services" might well mean "caregiving" in the German vernacular, but the lack of proper translation certainly does lend credibility issues.
2-0 out of 5 stars Cheap is not good, less expensive is better, and value creation is best
As fascinating as the thought might be and as seductive as the book's hype might also be, I found the entire premise and treatment lacking. Let me try to be specific, rather than take a few "cheap" shots. From the start, Bosshart takes up a style that is repetitive, rhetorical, and unsubstantiated. He asks three questions (p.4): "Would you like to earn more tomorrow than you do today? Would you prefer to see lower prices or higher prices when you go shopping? If you are one of those privileged enough to be able to put money aside, would you prefer a higher or lower return on your investment?" Then he "answers" his own poorly worded, biased, leading questions: "There is no need for further explanation here; the answers are clear and speak for themselves." You not likely to achieve the first or third aim, "but the second aim lies well within my grasp." NOTE: His shift between first- and third-person writing is at times confusing. Then he disparages cheap - really he means "inexpensive" but using it would ruin his thesis and hyper-marketing - food, clothing, computers, home improvement and furnishings, and travel. Reads like an old European grousing that middle-class people can afford luxuries, i.e., "Look at that white trash sitting in business class." He needs to look at his own sense of elitism, envy and low self-esteem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweatshops from the workers' perspective
I teach a course on Women and Work and Miriam Ching Louie's Sweatshop Warriors is the first book I have found that really describes sweatshops from the workers' perspectives, as agents rather than victims. The students really got it. I plan to use the book in this course from now on.

5-0 out of 5 stars A more sinister side of globalization
Miriam Ching Yoon Louie has a literary talent in exposing the ill effects of globalization on poor women of color in the American garment industry. Focusing on Chinese, Korean, and Mexican immigrants she documents how their labor is continuously being exploited without regard to their personal well-being. Transnational corporations seek their labor because it is cheap. It is these women who are the backbones of the forces of globalization and their stories need to be told. An added strength of this book is that the author doesn't just focus on the negative structural aspects but she also includes multiple instances of how these workers create social solidarity and fight for social change in their favor, even when up against the odds. Her personal involvement in these social movements is an added benefit. These poor women of color both produce and reproduce globalization on the local and global scale. It leaves one with the belief that there is hope after all for a fair and just world. This book will make you reevaluate the 'promises' of free trade agreements and economic growth. As one group prospers there is surely another group being disadvantaged. Overall, this book is accessible especially in discussions on the feminization of labor and migration that is not cluttered with jargon. Go ahead and take a gamble. I hope that it will alter your social stance on these important issues as it reinforced mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars In My Personal Top Ten
During my vacation, I've been reading "Sweatshop Warriors: Immigrant Women Workers Take on the Global Factory" by Miriam Ching Yoon Louie.Miriam has a multi-decade organizing history with low income women of color. She is the co-founder of the Women of Color Resource Center in Berkeley, and author of an amazing trainers' manual called WEdGE" Women's Education in the Global Economy."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated, but opens your eyes
If you still believe that the US is the epitome of free trade, this book is for you.(If you don't, this could be for use as ammunition)This book chronicles the harm of protectionism (higher prices) and the many shams put on by the US government in the name of old fashioned protectionism.Whether it's farms, textiles or industrial goods, Bovard highlights the problems and perils of protectionism - by whatever name it goes by.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE FAIR TRADE FRAUD
James Bovard is in my view the most objective, incisive investigative journalist on the planet (past or present). Like Freedom In Chains, Lost Rights, Feeling your Pain, Terrorism and Tyranny, The Bush Betrayal, and Shakedown(How the Govt screws you from A to Z), James is a master at identifying the criminal excesses of government operating outside the bounds of the Constitution sub calore juris, sub pretexto juris. Jamesalso provides enoough documentation to engender the hatred of the collectivist-socialist members of both houses of Congress and the collectivist-socialist media who would burn him at the stake for exposing them if it were possible for them to do so.
3-0 out of 5 stars Alright, We Get the Point Already
The main thesis of this book is great and perfectly worth the effort that Bovard has made in exposing a real problem. However, you have surely never read a more repetitive book in your life. Here Bovard tackles the inefficiency and capriciousness of US "free trade" laws and the bizarre politics at the Commerce department. US trade officials make an art of penalizing foreign companies for behavior that US companies are subsidized to commit, and have attitudes toward imports that we pledge to go to war to prevent in other countries. All the rhetoric about "free" trade from politicians is swamped by protectionism in real life, with unfair and often ridiculous consequences. For example, politically motivated tariffs against imported steel, designed to save a few jobs in the American steel-production industry, have destroyed a far larger number of jobs in American steel-using industries.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Shame
It's a shame that these respected Agricultural Economists would allow such a poor example of a textbook to be published under their names. While there may be some meagre updates, the book is so watered down that it is probably more appropriate to a high school class than college. In addition, at 54 cents a page, its price far exceeds the price of most other quality books dealing with agriculture.A decent faculty member would never, in good conscience, require that students purchase this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Policy Lite"
The 4th edition of this text was a truly outstanding edition. It fit the needs of a wider vairety of courses ranging from the traditional Ag Policy course to courses focusing on the environment and rual development.Unfotunately, this is 5th edtion. If the reader wants a "CLiff-Notes" version then this is the text.It lacks the depth and breadth of a decent college textbook. The authors would have served the academic community much better by giving this watered down fifth edition a totally new title while leaving the 4th edition in print.Read more
