5-0 out of 5 stars Good combo
This review is for Principles of Economics (7th Edition).I actually bought this book instead of Principals of Macroeconomics which looks almost the same. After I received it, I realized it was the incorrect book.I went the publisher's website and did some research. This book includes all the information I needed for the Macro class. It also contains the full contents of both the publisher's Macro and Micro books.Turns out this book was a great book to keep for future references.
2-0 out of 5 stars Student's opinion of this book
From a first-time macroeconomic student's point of view, this book sucked. The glossary was very poor making it troublesome to look up unfamiliar terms. Each chapter makes frequent reference to charts and graphs that are located several pages away, causing you to have to shuffle back and forth between pages, trying to decipher difficult new concepts. This book also assumes some prior knowledge of economic concepts, and moves very quickly through progressively more complex material. Thumbs down from a new student's perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for economic students in their first year
This book presents and explains both Micro and Macro Theory in a very friendly way.It explains step by step the functions of the micro and macro theory and describes the fuctions of the instituions andorganizations involve in the economy as a whole. It gives historicalbackground, which many students look for in order to understand how? why?who? the study of economics. Besides it explains really well the economicterminology introduce as you read the book. Finally the book presentscurrent event cases through the chapters which are related it to theideaspresented in the reading. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid if you can
I think this is one of the worst textbooks I've ever read. It uses 14 different sentences to say the same thing, and makes basic concepts seem complicated by overstating/analyzing them. This book could be significantly shorter...maybe the author was getting paid by the word?

5-0 out of 5 stars it's "all that and a bag of chips"
This is a demanding high school (or undemanding college) introductory textbook on the subject.Only the most rudimentary algebra is required, and honestly one could easily get through the book without even that.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply put, the best economics textbook on the market
UPDATE:This is the 3rd edition. The 4th edition just came out, and it is excellent.I have read every page, and will post a review as soon as I have time. But in the meantime, do not buy the 3rd edition.(I'm not sure why Amazon is still selling this now outdated edition.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear, concise, and well written text on the economic choices and behaviors of nations
If you are familiar with Mankiw's introductory text "Principles of Economics", you know that he writes in a clear, concise, and as lively a manner as you are likely to find in a text on economics.Since I find economics quite interesting, I wanted more when I read through that textbook. For those of us who felt that desire, Mankiw has updated his intermediate text on macroeconomics for this sixth edition.

Although the concepts are presented in a fairly understandable way, they are not tied together well for someone new to macroeconomics.Particularly annoying are the missing variable definitions for formulas. With Barron's as a supplement, it makes more sense.

4-0 out of 5 stars Macroeconomy Today
This textbook is quite a comprehensive of introductory macroeconomics.Great graphs, well-explained, carefully thought out.The one downside is that it is quite idealistic, as one would expect of a neo-classicaleconomist.The author does not recognize flaws in the theories nor does heacknowledge that the real world is not so cut-and-dry and ordered as wewould be led to believe. However, as stated before, this is a wonderfulintroductory text for anyone who wants to understand the economy today. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Macroeconomics Text In The Market
This is simply the best Macroeconomics text out there. The book is easy enough to read for the layman, yet contains concepts hard enough for those who want to be challeneged. It also includes real world examples for those who want to understand the application of macroeconomics rather than just the theory.
4-0 out of 5 stars the thresher
Olivier Blanchard's handsome hardbound "Macroeconomics" (3rd Ed.) is a challenging and unfriendly freshman-level macroeconomics text that does a solid but daunting job.

1-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the Worst Textbook I've Ever Had
I used this book for my EC301 Intermediate MacroEconomics class at Park University. The instructor warned us that this is a challenging book, and that all of her past students struggled with it.I was only able to read and understand part of chapter one, the rest flew about 10 miles over my head. The instructor told us she had suggested a couple of other textbooks to the head of the Econ department at Park, but the head refused.(Makes you wonder what kind of a cash donation the head accepted to use this book, doesn't it?)Now our instructor has stated she will refuse to teach this class again if this textbook is the required text.I completely agree. This is not written for anyone but economists, which leaves all of us other majors out in the cold.I am a finance major, and found this book completely un-readable and uncomprehendable.I'm just glad the instructor offered extra credit options so I'll be able to pass this class with at least a B, if not an A.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Macreconomics Book for Undergraduates
I have found this book very helpful in achieving a solid grasp of different macroeconomic concepts. A very important quality that I should mention is how each chapter builds an important foundation for the following chapter. Macroeconomic models are elaborated in a way that the student could understand not only what they explain (predict), but also how they are derived. I strongly recommend this text for anyone who is interested in understanding the basics of macroeconomics.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not a good book for beginners.
This is the textbook required by my professor. When I read it, I just felt that the author wastes a lot of words on some very simple and straightforward points. But as to those very confusing concepts and complicated procedure about how the economy adjusts, he uses as few words as possible. For example, when talking about the adjustment of inflation expectation, the author doesn't explain why and how the new equilibrium point appears at point E2 in figure 8-2. And I think this is very important to understand the underlying theory. Also, there are many inconsistent points and some critical typos in this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Macroeconomics: Principles and Tools
This easy-to-read, well-structured textbook is an excellent source of information for any economics student.I used this book for Principles of Macroeconomics, an online course I took over the summer. The book is simple yet gives sufficient detail on many topics to not only provide a broad overview, but it is able to go quite in depth. The authors provide the student with a great deal of tools to use and supply many activities, questions and methods to help relate concepts to the real world. This book is written much better than my Advanced Macroeconomics text and is much more student-friendly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but pretty good
The book is by no means perfect, but it's a darn good book. Its major imperfection is that many important concepts are spread around and not specifically brought to the forefront alone.Otherwise, though, it allows for a great foundation in Macroeconomics for your GECO 200 or equivalent class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Macroeconomics: Principles & Tools Review
This book gives a great overview of the study of economics.I used it for an Introduction to Global Economics class in college and found it to be easy to read and understand. The information is extremely up-to-date, andis displayed not only through text, but by charts and graphs as well. There also additional materials (practice test questions, a CD rom, and aguide to researching economics on the internet) which accompany the textwhich are available as well.Overall, a great book for the study of basiceconomics! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the modern approach to macroeconomics
Barro had no challenger since his 1st edition came out more than 20 years ago. Someone finally came up with a better proposal. I most say that for me it is the best book on the subject at an intermediate level. Everyone shall have it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good read
I agree with the other reviewer, Macroeconomics by Williamson is a very well written text. It incorporates a large variety of topics in the general framework very well. Much of what I could say would only be redundent as the other reviewer pointed out the highs for this text. The book is very appropriate for a intermediate undergraduate course.

5-0 out of 5 stars SW's Macroeconomics is the best macro book on the market!
After reading this book no one will ever complain that macroeconomics lacks micro foundations. This book first explains the microeconomics of intertemporal goods and labor markets and goes on to create an intertemporal general equilibrium economy (with two periods for simple exposition). Then Wiliamson shows how growth theory and business cycle theories are applied in this general equilibrium economy. This is by far the most fun and understandible way to teach undergraduates about growth and business cycles at the intermediate level.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very good for understanding macro theory.
This book, is not helpful for understanding basic modern concepts in macro theory. It is in an inconvenient middle point between tools-oriented and economics-oriented. I think that if what you want to master are the tools, Stokey and Lucas' Recursive Methods is better by far. Similarly, if you want to understand the economic issues, Romer's Advanced Macroeconomics is an excellent alternative.
3-0 out of 5 stars A book for Econometricians rather than Macroeconomists
The book is certainly written by distinguished people, but it seems to me that their focus in writting this book was more to exhibit mathematical methods to solve problems rather than discuss the problems themselves. Apparently the book is meant for training mathematical skills in dynamic programming, andprepare you for computer simulations of macroeconomic problems. But don't use it for understanding macroeconomics.

1-0 out of 5 stars unfortunately there's nothing better
One might divide economics books into two categories: those that are strong on explanation and intution, and those that are strong on proof. This book has neither, and unfortunately it appears to be the standard in graduate macroeconomics courses. I find myself wondering if it deliberately chooses the most obscure way to write its equations. For instance, in the Solow and Ramsey models, Romer retains the population and household variables throughout the entire proof rather than simply write them in intensive form. If you're reading the book after a lecture, it stands a chance of confusing you, especially because it tries to avoid optimal control theory (not a good idea!).

1-0 out of 5 stars A lot of fluff, very little meat
This book was a required text for my first semester of the Economics PhD core. I found the book to be a terrible disaster. Supposedly this book is a more basic approach to advanced macroeconomics, but I found I comprehended higher-level texts with greater ease than this book. The wording is very obtuse, which makes understanding the verbage difficult.Once you get past the words and understand the meaning, however, the explanations are also very inadequate given the complexity of the material.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good survey
Different people with different expectations and needs for this book tend to view it differently. This book didn't delve deeply into the formal theory and is appropriate to gain a panorama of macroeconomic theories. Those who're scolding excruciatingly this book please get back to thinking a little about the relationship of economics and mathematics/statistics. The economics studies the a facet of the social phenomenon. The mathematics and statistics act as a way of thinking and deduction imposed on this phenomenon. We can still talk about economics without lots of formal theory and rigorous deduction. We then are just talking about the phenomenon itself. Anyone who has done lots of modeling would come to terms with this observation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Retail Marketing 101
This well written book basically outlines the consumer market as it is today: that most consumers, while buying basic necessities at discount retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target, don't mind paying a little extra for luxury goods they feel are worth it in some way. It's a fascinating read for anybody interested in the retail business or in marketing. As somebody who is currently in marketing and who worked at Bath & Body Works for a number of years (of which one of the book's authors, Neil Fiske, is the CEO), it was interesting to learn why the store went from a country, home-spun theme in the 1990's to the upscale, urban "apothecary" it is today. Though Bath & Body Works was never used as a case study in the book, the concept of trading up is certainly applied to the store (thanks to Fiske's leadership).
4-0 out of 5 stars Trading Up
Did you ever wonder why it is becoming so much more difficult to find products that either aren't luxury or low-end?The authors explain how consumers are selectively trading up for products that they value and trading down in other areas, leaving the middle. The authors use case studies to make their case. For example, some consumers are willing to shell out $2000 for a washer and dryer. Not any washer and dryer but the latest side load offering from Whirlpool.Considering that you can get a washer and dryer for $400 to $600 this is quite a premium. The authors explain how companies if they can provide a ladder of value for a product can entice consumers to trade-up, even for something as humdrum as a washer and dryer. The authors back up their concepts with marketplace facts as well as socioeconomic factors such as the increased number of women in the workforce and the state of the family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Infrormation! Great Tools to put in play!
Outlines a pragmatic way to understand why we pay more money for the brands that we love. Provides a compelling breakdown of the human emotional rung on the product development ladder. I won't spoil it here by telling you what it is but your collegues will be impressed when you tell them about it yourself! ... Read more
