5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference On Current Teaching Challenges
This was a text book for my now completed first education class, "The Diverse Classroom". We did not have to read the entire book, just Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 12, so I base my review on those chapers. This book is rich in detail on the challenges faced in contemporary classrooms. It is well written, and has very complete and thorough references. In addition to raising awareness of key issues, it provides many practical suggestions for application.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Textbook
My only complaint about it was that the cover is warped. I bought a new book, had it delivered next-day, and it won't close properly.
1-0 out of 5 stars STINKS!!!!
This is one of the worst stats text books I have ever seen.It is very hard for someone with a logical mathematical background to understand. Most statistical problems are addressed in text versus examples.I would never suggest this book to anyone!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars not restricted to just educational context
Much of the book's material is not restricted to educational research. It is generally applicable to anyone who wants to perform experimental studies in the social sciences. Where you need to deal with human subjects. Granted, in the book, these subjects are often primary school kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I'm a high school student, and I had the privilege of taking medical terminology during my sophomore year. This book was fantastic is teaching complicated topics. The flash cards are great and the outline of it is great as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Medical Terminology Resource
This book was an excellent resource for someone who has little medical background. Difficult concepts were made easy thanks to the included study aids. I especially liked the various memory tips that were given throughout the book. I would highly recommend this book for novices as well as experts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review Book!
I used this book for the first semester of medical school. It gives a quick overview of each system of the human body as well as abbreviations commonly used. It's an easy read. A perfect complement for anyone needing a quick, but thorough, medical terminology overview.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book - Recommended for anyone serious about good grades
I read this book right after trying to apply IRAC to my first midterm and doing horribly. After reading the first 50 pages I knew exactly what I did wrong and how I could have handled the question differently. I recommend also doing LEEWS as both methods are similar in that they teach you how to answer legal questions from both sides and arrive at a thoughtful response

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I bought this book prior to beginning law school on the advice of the summer reading list.Although I haven't gotten through even my first semester, already what I have read has really made things in class seem clearer and I feel much more confident for the exam.I wholly recommend it.

Editorial Review

Think you've got a book inside of you? Anne Lamott isn't afraid to help you let it out. She'll help you find your passion and your voice, beginning from the first really crummy draft to the peculiar letdown of publication. Readers will be reminded of the energizing books of writer Natalie Goldberg and will be seduced by Lamott's witty take on the reality of a writer's life, which has little to do with literary parties and a lot to do with jealousy, writer's block and going for broke with each paragraph.Marvelously wise and best of all, great reading. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag
This book has some good writing advice, which I appreciate, but I was annoyed by the intrusive religious comments. It should have been marketed as a Christian writing book, or else I wish they had left the religion out of it. I do not expect to find this when I purchase a writing book. I want to hear about writing, not about how God can make me a better writer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading and Saving !
This is one of the books that I will keep and re-read.Very well written and inspiring.I LOVED IT !! Made me "want" to write and made me feel that I could actually write something worth reading.

2-0 out of 5 stars Depressing
I found this book very depressing. Anne Lamott's constant self-deprecation throughout the book caused me to really doubt myself as well. I know she is doing it to show that she's human just like the rest of us, but I think she can show that without hating on herself every chance she gets (saying the 9-year-old version of herself looked like a neurotic cat woman, etc.) despite what she says about how you shouldn't do that. It's like hanging around with a bunch of anorexic models, it gets to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars QRI4
I have been using the QRI3 for many years and was very happy that a new version was out with new stories. There are plenty of new stories in this version. It was nice to give a student something they had not memorized or where not familiar with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical & Professional Product
My wife needed an IRI for a recent course. She reported that this book provides different types of readings as opposed to just the story narrative form. The directions for using the IRI were clear and the typeset on the word lists is sharp. She says she is very pleased with this investment and expect to use it in her classroom in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive at times but lots of enlightening information.
Some beginning parts of this book are a little repetitive, if you've been through a teacher credential program. However, I found lots of useful information that I definitely think can be incorporated into any curriculum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking, Critical, Essential
With respect to some of the previous reviewers, I really don't think they have done justice to this book.I'll completely expose my inner geek and admit that curriculum design is fascinating to me, and add that I own a considerable number of books on the topic.I am particularly interested in differentiating curricula, and I purchase books about educational theory and classroom ideas the way other women purchase shoes--insatiably.I have constantly challenged myself to create personalized lessons with meaningful learning goals throughout my teaching career, but I will say that this book has definitely changed the way I view teaching and curricular design--and for the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most practical book out there.
After researching most of the books on the market for Aspergers children and teens, this is surely the most practical source on social skills training. It's not a theoretical treatise, but a user-friendly way to quickly teach relevant skills to students with AS. I recommend to parents and teachers alike.

2-0 out of 5 stars for children under 12
this book seems to target children under 12 years of age.It has very few pointers for adolescents. this book tends to be aimed at the education profession rather than parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best social skills book for our family
As a parent homeschooling a child with Asperger Syndrome, Ive bought about a dozen books to help me teach my child social skills. This one is the most useful Ive found. Most books on this topic are aimed only at teachers and are hard to adapt to use at home with one child; thats not the case with this book. While the book includes instructions for school personnel and describes how to teach the skills in classrooms and small groups, it is relatively free of educational jargon and doesnt waste too much space on things that useless to me, like reproducible handouts for the children to take home to their parents.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An online review by Courtney and Jenny
This book has opened our eyes to many issues we did not think about or explore prior to reading this book.Richard Rothstein does an excellent job pointing out the many contributing factors to the "Black-White Achievement Gap" in America.Even though some of Rothstein's ideas are expressed in other articles and books, these important issues and topics he reiterates only emphasizes the attention that this issues needs.Rothstein addresses that, as a society, we need to do more for students than just a good job of addressing issues and raising questions. The last chapter of his book deals with different ways teachers, educators, parents, and health officials can step in and intervene into children's lives in order to work on closing the achievement gap between lower- and middle-class families.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well researched defense of public education
I looked to Rothstein's book for a thoroughly documented defense of public education in light of its inability to resolve fundamental inequalities.I was not disappointed but those who seek feasible proposals to remedy the problem will not find it here. The basic solution seems to be to extend the public education system into early childhood.I see a number of problems:1. if we cannot afford the employment of highly paid teaching professionals in K-12, how will we do it for early childhood professionals paid at comparible salaries.2. If the stress on on cognitive skills is problematic, why would such professional status be required anyways. He points out the importance of behavioral/character training but rules out the use of less educated adults in these communities to impart that training.I believe that they will be most effective in training and disciplining the children than a middle class college grad. Moreover, they will provide the intensive coverage needed at the lowest cost.Have the high priced professionals train the aides from the area and then send them to the day-care and other preschool programs to do the early childhood education. In conclusion, the non-sequitars involved in the proposed soluctions do not invalidate the objective summaries of the research and the entirely valid objections to standardized testing as enshrined in the NCLB.I would certainly recommend it for a critical understanding of the issue. Then go to Valerie Lee and Ted Sizer for better solutions.

2-0 out of 5 stars ASK A SILLY QUESTION ...
Richard Rothstein is no more qualified to advise on education than the new governor of California(who is a body-builder).Theobjective of education is economic self-sufficiency.Getting ahead in life requires connections, not "knowledge."American blacks are denied connections. We allknow why and how.The black-white gap which Rothstein writes aboutis notinformation but access.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Elements of Style: A Classic with Timeless Advice
Although the original Elements of Style was written in 1919 (or earlier), it still holds true that anyone who wants to learn how to write in a clear and concise manner will benefit from this book. After reading this book you'll know to avoid breaking elementary rules and principles that are made in writing: excessiveuse of adjectives and adverbs, writing in the passive voice, using different tenses in writing, using the improper case of pronouns (example: using "who" when "whom" should be used and vice versa).
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
This book was required for my high school English classes back in the late '60's. As an English professor, I use this book today. Many generations of students have benefited from this book's informal, conversational approach to teaching formal English (that is, excellent English that is precise and concise in form and content). Although I don't personally like the illustrations, this is my favorite edition of the book because the illustrations add a whimsical informality to substantive content.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pictures + Punctuation= Fabulous Source of Info

3-0 out of 5 stars Review of Golden's _Price of Admissions_
This is a book full of handwringing and incessant whining.Golden, a Harvard alumnus, lacks any subtlety or literary range, not to mention consistency. He'll rail against "development cases" pushing out "well qualified" candidates from "top-tier" NYU and Georgetown then pages later treat both schools as inferior backups or consolation prizes.Which are they?Golden shoots so broadly that his complaint gets lost.Again and again he laments that a seat given a "development case" or alumni "legacy" could have gone to someone more deserving.Who would that be?He writes as if a champion of the oppressed but anyone sensible knows that these seats would most probably go to some other child prepped at Hotchkiss or Choate; or graduated from Greenwich or Beverly Hills public. In short, a seat given to SAT and GPA is no less a seat programmed for the perpetuation of wealth and social position -- just blander.Does Golden understand, like Groucho, that no one would care to attend HYP if there weren't wealthy and celebrated connections to be made?Golden doesn't see that a truer psychological intrigue is to be found in the alliance of court and commons when thrown into a mix with the carnivorous middle. In such circumstances it might be better to end the masquerade and simply have foreigners, legacies, celebrities, minorities and the poor appear daily on stage in Memorial Hall -- curio objects for collection and enlightened entertainment. It's all very silly, really! But, still he rails. How can Golden possibly conceive of affirmative action for intellectuals?Repeat:This is the United States of America.I am sure they read Hofstadter when Golden attended Harvard.I'm also certain they understood PT Barnum.Does Golden think today's economy offers better rewards for aesthetic beauty or intellect? He should reconsider as U-Tube scores billions but pure science waits on tables. If America really cared about intellect and talent it would eagerly fund gifted education in the public schools. If it really cared about equality it would step up and pay for better schools all around. If Golden really held dame egalite's torch he would befriend Jonathan Kozol.Even George Steinbrenner recognizes that teams composed from imbalanced talent, and ego, make far more satisfying stories.Holmes needed his Watson, many great scientific discoveries were accidental, and "gated communities" are extremely dull places to live.Real diversity is social, economic, racial, intellectual and talent broad. If Harvard falls short, it can afford to try harder -- and it will. The last thing an egalitarian should desire is to attack "legacy" or "development" or "celebrity" admits only to replace their peculiarities with admissions by the numbers. Listen up defenders of affirmative action: Do not call in the wolves to help you fight the dogs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Right on
A brief stroll across the Porsche, BMW, Mustang, and SUV packed parking lot of a Stanford undergrad dorm shows that this book must have a kernel of truth, unfortunately.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's Okay
I found this book to be a fascinating read. One thing I did not like though was Golden's characterization of affirmative action.Although this wasn't the explicit focus of his book, his brief references to it I think lead to false impressions. In fact, there aren't large numbers of black and Latino students walking around these schools. The majority of the "minorities" are Asians, particularly at the graduate level where the largest campus organization at one Ivy League school in particular is the Chinese Students Association. Most of the black and Latino students are immigrants or second-generation immigrants.Because of the "immigrant effect" (e.g. the high performance of Asian students), these kids generally have higher test scores and better grades than any Americans--white or black.I can count on one hand the number of Jamalsor Letitias growing up in the inner city walking around these schools. Therefore, it's kind of ignorant when whites say they are at a disadvantage because "they don't have race."It's too bad that they didn't get into the schools to be able to see that their impressions about how many spots were given to blacks and Latinos because of affirmative action is not really accurate.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pictures are sometimes confusing
I bought this book for the ASL class I am taking. I missed one week and tried to use the book to teach myself the missed lesson. I did not understand about a third of the diagrams on how to do the different signs. I have seen some sources with explanations to accompany signs which would have made this book much clearer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning American Sign Language
This book is a good one to accompany an ASL class. It is hard to display three dimensional signs on a two dimensional picture. The aid of an instructor makes up for this difficulty. Also some of the vocabluary is not quite right for conversations. The instructor helps straighten out these conflicts. It is a good book with a lot of information as a textbook should be and that is why it is a required text for the class I am taking.

4-0 out of 5 stars I only spent time with the math section
I took the GRE for the second time three weeks ago and did better than I expected. When I took the test before (2001), I had used the Princeton Review material (Cracking the GRE), and it definitely gave me excellent pointers on approaching the questions, guessing effectively, and managing my time. As a result, I got a 660 on the math last time -- pretty good. But I felt that the actual math instruction in PR was a little skimpy, and I got Kaplan's GRE/GMAT Math Review and this Barron's book (the 2006 edition).
5-0 out of 5 stars Good refresher
This book definately serves its purpose. If you need a good review on math and vocab this book can help. Also the tips on answering questions are extremely useful.I wouldn't use this as my only tool before taking the GRE but it is a huge help.

3-0 out of 5 stars Seems to be the most comprehensive book out there...
The book is better than most other gre books. Its pretty straightforward, has the list of words one should know, a handful of review problems and such. So its alright. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Incredible
I was in awe when my son received the Dinosaur book for Christmas from his Grandfather. I saw this book in a Parents magazine and had to get it based on the fact that the Dino one was incredible. My 3 year old loves it! It's not a book to let him play with unless you want it destroyed. Instead, this book allows us to make some quality time for each other when we sit down and look through it. It's very informational, and as he grows older I'm sure he'll read it, but at this point the pop-ups are worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves the book
This is a very interesting book.My 5-year old has really enjoyed the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Pop-up books.
A Great Book to Read With the Kid on your lap. Probably best for kids in the couple or three grades. Best for kids on your lap because pop-up books are rather fragile. Grabbing the nose of the shark and using it as a handle to lug the book around is likely to lose the nose to your shark.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for busy educators
Having purchased many types of teaching resources over the last few years, I have finally found onemore helpful than all the others combined. Evertson not only outlines the procedures in an easy to read manner, but she also gives excellent examples of her theories in practice. I was expecting a book that strictly dealt with keeping order in the classroom, but what I received was so much more. This book describes ways to teach that will ensure that classrooms run smoothly and more importantly the students learn. I only hope that other new teachers find this text at the beginning of their careers as the advice contained is invaluable. If your budget or time schedule only allows for one book, definitely buy this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book in the world -ADHD approved by me
I have tried several things with my 6 year old son.He craves negative attention. He has been diagnosed with ADHD and ODD (oppositional defiance disorder). This is a simple plan that works. He has made outstanding improvements.I am using it also with my 12 year old daughter with out any problems. It is something that the non-difficult child can benefit from as much as the difficult child. If I had to pick a book solely on a name I do not think I would have picked this one but it came highly recommended to me. I am going to by 10 more copies and hand them out to anyone interacting with my children. If i had the money I would buy one for anyone who is around any child period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Positive Paradigm
Transforming the Difficult Child The Nurtured Heart Approach is an awesome book. I am a teacher and plan to apply its principles in my elementary class. Using new paradigms, it enfolds your child in positives as a way of building inner wealth. It leads your child to be recognized for all of the positiveness he possesses. It helps him to feel loved and accepted, as well as to channel his energies in ways that make positive contributions to himself and those around him. This book will lead you on an exciting new way to enjoy life with a highly energized child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth your time
I was a little dubious about this book when it was suggested that I read it, but I respect the co-worker who suggested it and decided to give it a try.It is an informative and emotionally challenging read. The book offers a different perspective about parenting, without passing negative judgements as many subject-related books do.The most useful component of this book is that it suggests small changes and shifts in focus to help families support a child who struggles emotionally and socially. These small changes do bring some measure of peace for parents who have been struggling to help their children become productive and successful people in the world. ...
