5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I needed for the CTEL
This text admirably addresses the CTEL exam.Pop for the third edition; it's worth it.And if it were up to me, this book's sections on immigration law, history, and diversity would be required reading for any educator.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource Book
I purchased this book for a college class and it was mostly review from other classes. However, I found the book easy to read and very informative. This single book covered about 4 or 5 other books from different courses. If you are a beginning teacher that wants to be able to teach to all of your students, than this book is a must. This great book covers SDAIE teaching and just other great concepts. If you have never taken a multilinguial course than this is money well spent. If you have had a number of those types of classes, than I would look for a book more catered to what you need. This is book is a great introductory book. Most students that I had in class kept the book as reference material and that says a lot because we use book money to live on until finicial aide comes in, LOL. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, Easy Reading Book for Teachers Who Want to Learn More About English Language Learners
I thought this book was very good for classroom teachers who want clear information on how to include English Language Learners in their classrooms. It is very difficult to explain to classroom teachers how to include students who are learning English in short sound bites. This book helps clarify information and teachers can read it at their leisure.

3-0 out of 5 stars CLAD Text
A well written text essential for acquiring CLAD credentialing. Myths are perpetuated which greatly reduces the credibility - there is only one "race", humans or Homo sapiens. Very few of us were born or came from the Caucasus Mountains of eastern Europe, yet 17th century artificial constructs of "race" and "Caucasian" are used. There is no discussion of how skin pigmentation is an ecotype adaptation, not a "race." Science, Scientific American, Discovery and other peer-reviewed journals have corrected "race" misconceptions repeatedly - yet the authors, with education backgrounds, appear to have not completed a review of current literature.5-0 out of 5 stars Golden resource
I almost felt like I was cheating on the CLAD test. This handbook was a wonderful resource and the only one I used to pass the test .... the FIRST time!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Preparing to take the CLAD test.
Chapters 1 & 2 seemed very dry but I'm not big on theory. The remaining chapters were much more interesting. I highly recommend reading it before taking the CLAD test. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bilingual and ESL Classrooms: Teaching in Multicultural Contexts
The authors emphasize relevent material and content towards the importance of "teaching in multicultural contexts".The excepts from teachers and students provide a personal connection. This book addresses issues of cultural diversity, Bilingual/ESL strategies, and provides a reference on laws and policies that have evolved to focus on today's changing educational settings.

I really enjoyed the way Mara Sapon-Shevin writes -- everything flows, everything is connected, and her choice of words is apt and evocative. It's also very well organized. Her ideas are elegant and yet simple, clear, and concise. She names the problems that exist and ways to addressthem, and illustrates them well with clear examples.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Toddlers
My 3 year old and I have only done one lesson, and he already calls it "his workbook".The lessons are easy, relative, and a great way to remember to practice (even if its just a little bit) everyday!Great for parents and teachers for preschool children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
My son is 5 years old and found this to be a little slow but he is learning from it.We are continuing to work on it daily and he is improving.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning made fun
This book has made learning fun for both my son and myself. We enjoy the CD and the flashcards. The FlipFlop concept is great. The lesson plans are short enough to keep my 3 year old engaged. Our daycare is planning on using this as a learning tool in the 3-5 year old rooms -- I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars When they don't understand English
This is a must book for anyone who has to teach a content area to students who are learning English, whose home language is other than English. It provides an excellent instrument for self-evaluation, if one is the content-area teacher. I highly recommend it to all teachers who have English language learners in their classrooms. Nowadays, that is almost ALL teachers, K-16.

4-0 out of 5 stars One Child Two Languages
This book is very good for an introduction to second language teaching. It offers practical classroom advise on areas you need to pay attention to.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent and rare to find
The book arrived two days ago and I only finished a third of it, but I can't help writing this to share how much I liked it. I had searched on the web for information on what a young child (1-5yr), whose home language is not English, will go through when he/she first goes to a English-speaking preschool. I was frustrated for the past two months when my 3-year-old son started preschool. A child at this young age does not have enough social skills to compensate for his lack of competence in a different language, which is again needed to be socially accepted in the new environment. Such a child can become a loner, being ignored by other children, and unable to spell out his feelings. This book is the answer to my several sleepless nights. I am going to copy a few pages which describe the phase my son is going through and give them to my son's teacher so that she will understand what he feels and become more supportive. This is a great book, and I will request my local library to buy it, and I strongly recommend any parents who have the same concerns as I did to read it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I was born in Mexico and faced similar issues. This is awful.
Richard Rodriguez whines and complains in his book.I have similar experiences. I was born in Mexico.I was reared in America and went to Catholic schools.I have a darker than average complexion.People often ask me what country I was born in just by looking at me, but that did not warp my wife like it seemed to for Rodriguez. I have a friend who went to Stanford, like Rodriguez, on scholarship, but he did not whine about it.I googled Rodriguez and found a published speech where he continues to show weak character. Here is a quote from one of his speeches: "... if you really want to scare the United States of America, all you would have to say to the United States of America is "I'm going to marry you. I'm going to start dating your son." "This is pretty sad and tasteless.Besides showing weak character, Rodriguez is a poor writer.I have never seen so many sentence fragments. At one point in his book he admits he never liked writing when he was in school. It shows. This book is an insult to the Latin-American community from a condescending publisher. We deserve better.
1-0 out of 5 stars I hate this book.
This is one of the worst books I have ever read. I understand that is fine writing, but the book is tasteless. I find Rodriguez arrogant and lonely. Is he trying to say that the turning point of his life was when the nun's came to his parents home. I hate this book it is one of my worst reads ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb job of capturing with words what many of us (first and second generation Americans) feel
I return to this book 8 years after I read if for the first time. Within minutes I find myself recalling the Sunday brunches my parents used to prepare for our entire family, the joyful sounds of my growing up in Virginia, after spending my early years in Eastern Europe. I intimately know the things Mr. Rodriguez writes about, because I've experienced them.

5-0 out of 5 stars SLA. An Introductory Course
A serious SLA scholar needs at least three broad introductions to begin with. This one is the first to have. Other ones are Ellis (1994) and Doughty & Long (2003). Needless to plough through articles in libraries because the field of SLA is too dispersed and chaotic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A necessity for all serious SLA/TESOL students
I am a graduate student in Michigan State University's MA TESOL program, and have the distinct honour of having Dr. Susan Gass as my advisor. In addition to being a University Distinguished Professor at MSU and President of the International Association of Applied Linguistics, Dr. Gass has published extensively on SLA research. Her textbook "Second Language Acquisition: An Introductory Course" is required reading as part of the TESOL program at MSU, and is an indispensable condensed guide to the hundreds of research articles on topics such as child language acquisition, interlanguage data and processes, SLA and linguistics, universal grammar, input, interaction and output, instructed L2 learning and nonlanguage influences (Critical Period Hypothesis, aptitude, anxiety, motivation, personality factors).
2-0 out of 5 stars Only for Hard-Core SLA Folk
While SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION is well-researched and provides a thorough overview of the field, it is only for college folks (probably graduate students and up), and there is little if any value for the utiltarian teacher.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Frightening lessons taught and learnt at these 'schools'
This all too true account of the reeducation process which American government officials euphemistically had Indian children go through is very chilling. It is maddening to believe there were people in Washington who actually considered such treatment of kids to be 'good policy'.
4-0 out of 5 stars Education for extinction
I read this for a class and enjoyed it very much.It is one of the best I have read for Native Studies. There are many facts and other pieces of information that I had not found in other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking book on the education of Native Americans
This book was recommended to me by my academic advisor, as it is considered an important and influential treatise on the subject of Native American education. David Wallace Adams, in his groundbreaking book, "Education for Extinction: American Indians and the Boarding School Experience, 1875-1928," shows how the case for education was made. First, Euro-Americans believed that the older generation of Indians was incapable of becoming civilized and were too attached to their old ways to change. 4-0 out of 5 stars Lern about USA
This book is different from that I expected. I thought about a classical Idioms Dictionary. Althought it's a good book that introduce not only American idioms but American way of life too.
