As a former student at Nueva, a school that included Self Science in their curriculum, I was constantly amazed while reading this book by its accuracy and specificity. The book clearly, with many examples and guidelines, laysout a year-long (or two-year) curriculum that allows students to learnabout and make connections with others as well as themselves.Self Scienceis one of the most valuable classes I've ever taken. ... Editorial Review

Everyone wonders why American schools have gone bad. E.D. Hirsch, author of Cultural Literacy, offers a compelling explanation.Schools do a lousy job of transmitting "core knowledge" to their students, he says.To improve, they must abandon all of their feel-good theories about "critical thinking" and work harder to endow kids with intellectual capital at an early age. It may sound like common sense, but this important book shows why so many educators appear to have lost theirs. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Best thing about this book is the glossary
While Hirsch does a good job of listing most of the trends in public school education, he does a truly dismal job of explaining why they don't work. In fact, even though I lean towards more traditional learning, I thought he was so off base with his reasons as to *why* this or that educational technique doesn't work, that actually I found I agreed in several cases with his opponents, which I don't think was the aim of his book, lol.
5-0 out of 5 stars A rebuttal to post-modern educational theory
As I read this book I reflected on how current formalistic educational theory parallels post-modernism in literature and visual art. In art and literature, the importance of formalism grew until content became nothing more than an mannequin for displaying the artist's cleverness, giving us conceptual art and critically impeccable novels that were totally devoid of plot or ideas. This parallels the conflict between "critical thinking" against "cultural capital." Cultural capital says that you have to know what the human experience talking about before you can join in the conversation. Critical thinking says that this conversation is no more than a laboratory for testing various forms of analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Book for Writing Teachers
This book makes it possible for teachers of writing to sit beside Judy Davis and Sharon Hill as they teach in their classrooms in the Manhattan New School. As the title suggests, this book is full of practical strategies for teaching students to write well. But the book ismuch more ambitious than that.It gives us a window into how these two incredible writing teachers think about children and curriculum in a writing workshop. For all of that, readers of this book will be thankful each time they return to the pages of the book to learn more and more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The BestGraphic Organizer Resource I Have Found
As a reading teacher, I use graphic organizers a great deal with my K-6 students.Although I own several graphic organizer resource books, this is the one I use most often. The organizers are unique, fun, and very easy to use.If you are going to purchase just one graphic organizer resource, this is the one I most highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love It!
I must say that this is one of the better graphic organizer books that I have purchased. I have many of them but this one seems to be one of my tried and true graphic organizer books. I have used it for different stories, different subject areas, and different grade levels. This is a book that will not have time to collect dust! I recommend this book! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars If you want a book that will help you in the classroom...
...I don't believe this is a book you will want.
2-0 out of 5 stars Fashionable Nonsense
Glasser takes an idea that has some merit and then keeps pushing it long after it becomes unhelpful.Glasser would have teachers quit using rewards and punishments to motivate students. He tries to justify this warm and fuzzy theory by pointing out misuses of rewards and punishments but its hard to understand how he could be blind to productive and fair uses of rewards and punishments that many teachers use.I know a poor teacher that use Glasser's model and a teacher that is good despite using it.If you want more objective research on schooling check out Stevenson and Stigler's the Learning Gap.

4-0 out of 5 stars good but not specific to short stories
I wanted a book to show me the difference in technique between a short story and novel length. This book didn't help me. If you want an overall view of how to write, this book is simple and arranged well, but I'm not sure why the title empahsis is on short story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Quick Reference Guide
Schaum's guide is a good quick reference guide in the same sense a good gourmet cookbook may serve as a quick reference guide for getting a creative meal started. It is helpful in recalling key incredients and in just what portions and in what order they should be presented but as far as a guide to inspire, I must report this guide is NOT!Sadly, what is needed is a chapter entitled, "Ideas!!! And how to put form to them."
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a gem
Over the past few months I have collected and read many books on creative writing with a slant towards the art and technique of fiction. All the while I write and read everyday improving my writing and improving my understanding. I can certainly recommend many books that I have recently read and studied and I must say that this book has a welcome place in my library. All of the books on fiction that I have are highly geared toward the novel.I had been struggling to write just one short story with the knowledge and experience imparted from other books.Things just didn't fit.I bought this book with three others not expecting anything special.I started with the book and a page and a half of short story.By the time I finished reading the first chapter, everything was so clear that I put the book down, and, with surprising success, finishedmy short story. It only took a matter of hours.I am a page and a half into another story told entirely from the omniscient point of view.I would also like to say that many of the books I have include a pre-amble or first section on the struggle of writing well.I have found many of these depressing even when I am shining with hope. The first chapter of this book approaches the subject of writers struggle with interspersed anecdotes of hope and quotes about the struggle and joy of writing from famous writers. If you buy this book for only one reason, let it be the first chapter. It is truly original. The rest of the book goes on to talk about many of the common elements in general creative writing that can be found in any collection. This book freed my style and showed me that I can use un-common technique to make an engaging story of less than 5,000 words.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For New Subs
I think this book would be great for new subs, but I was a little disappointed with the lesson plans.I've found myself in several situations where the teacher left me no instructions and I don't think these lesson plans would be very useful. It does have lots of great tips and some classroom management ideas though.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST SUB BOOK OR SHALL I SAY TEACHING BOOK AROUND!
This book has it all for new subs like me! It was written by a Mother/Daughter team who has taught for over 35 years. It has tons of things to do to make up for non-existent lesson plans and even a much needed Sub List Kit on what subs should pack in their briefcase daily. It provided great ideas and some tried and true examples. They had everything in there that you could think of and also some sample situations that you can learn a lot from. It is a well thought out book and organized very nicely with cute little illustrations. I purchased the Teacher's Bag of Tricks and Instant Success in the Classroom (the yellow book) as well and they were mainly full of lessons plans (that were so-so) or Sponge Activities (most of which needed to be reproduced). They didn't provide any examples or practical advice at all. I would say stick with this book and you will definitely have your classroom going places!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars If Not a Super Sub, Surely a Great One!
Considering that this is a 90 pg. book on such a broad topic, the authors did a great job of putting together both relevant advice and lesson plans for subs (gr. 1-6). The book is divided into 3 main parts: tools &advice, lesson plans in 8 subject areas,& a small section on timefillers. The lessons are very meaningful & easy to implement, and theadvice is great for starters. While you still need to supplement this bookw/ other activities & ideas (no 1 book can cover it all), it'sdefinitely worth having in your collection! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new under the sun
I thought this book was going to intruduce NEW teaching strategies for foreign languages, but in the end, it came out as a summary of methodologies and activities already being in use. If you want a better book (and not so expensive!!!) get Superteaching by Eric Jensen (co-author of Joyful Fluency). I think the book is EXTREMELY expensive for the "new" information it provides.

1-0 out of 5 stars Old hat - expensive new coat!
"Joyful Fluency" is a visually beautiful book, and it would need to be to make up for the fact that there is not one unique or new idea in it! The content is merely a rewording of material you will find in books by Colin Rose and Ostrander and Schroeder, at a fraction of the price I might add! If you are looking for a book with lots of fuzzy ideas that avoid the subject of tackling a language head on, then this book is for you! It is ideas such as these that, in my opinion as a self-made polyglot and experienced language teacher, that have devalued effective and exacting language education and left us with ideas that can only really lead to pidgin fluency. I have seen it happen! The idea that language acquisition will just "happen" of it's own accord is a very common one in language education today. Any linguist worth his salts, or any language teacher - any REAL language teacher who has matered his or her language, that is, will tell you that the only way you become excellent at a language (as an adult) is to study it! The "learn as you did as a child" premise is nothing more than a gimmick! But because it smacks of the easy path to success it is welcomed with open arms. It doesn't work. Period.5-0 out of 5 stars Rediscover your love of teaching and learning
When you see "The Brain Store, Inc.", you can expect a handsome, very readable, practical and somewhat expensive book, with illustrations, charts, and captivating sidenotes. At the beginning of each chapter of this book, there is a pie-chart of key ideas. Just flip through these 14 charts, the summaries, and "Guiding Assumptions" on p. 33, you get a good over-view.
