5-0 out of 5 stars A history of the IB, its increasing introduction in American school systems, and how it makes a difference
Jay Mathews & Ian Hill's Supertest: How The International Baccalaureate Can Strengthen Our Schools deftly assesses the statistics about the Baccalaureate, including its impact on student chances for success in college and life. Chapters provide a history of the IB, its increasing introduction in American school systems, and how it makes a difference in the transition to college. Sounds like dry reading: but the concurrent story of one American high school that adopted the IB adds a personal flavor and human interest touch to the statistics and discussions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your kids deserve IB - learn what it is and why from Jay
"Washington Post" reporter Jay Mathews extends his appreciation of challenge in our high schools by identifying the grandest and most challenging of them all:the International Baccalaureate (IB) program.Jay created "Newsweek" magazine's Challenge Index, and his writing is always approachable and easy to follow. This book maintains that special style. He writes here very specifically about a local DC-area high school and its experiences with beginning and maintaining the rigorous IB curriculum. You come to really care about the students and teachers he profiles, and to share their trials and successes and occasional failures with them. The book features an extremely effective method of integrating chapters about the creation and operation of the IB program as a whole - written by a co-author from the IB Organization - with chapters about Fairfax County, VA's Mount Vernon High School and the people involved with getting IB up and running there. And of the battles in Fairfax County and elsewhere about IB and its rival, the Advanced Placement (AP) program. In my mind there is no contest - IB is far and away the better program, especially for exposing kids to what college will be like. And there is no better predictor of success in college (i.e., graduating) than having taken at least one rigorous course in high school, especially one from IB which teaches how to think and plan and lean. But read Jay's book and decide for yourself. He does an excellent job of iterating the AP proponents concerns about IB, some legitimate - most not, and of exposing as fools or frauds a few of the opponents and their methods for keeping this excellent program out of their schools. They won, but did their kids a real disservice with their victory.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for those who teach Reading
I have been doing alot of professional reading on strategies to help my students comprehend what they read.I teach reluctant readers and this is one of the best I've read for middle school comprehension. This puts a new spin on strategies I've already been doing. This book plus Strategic Reading-Guiding Students to Lifelong Literacy 6-12 by Jeffrey Wilhelm are my strategic plans for learning-centered teaching: I do You watch, I do You help, You do I help and You do I watch.Powerful research!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Read It, but I Don't Get It: Comprehension Strategies for Adolescent Readers
This is one of the most helpful books about teaching struggling readers that I've ever read. The strategies were immediately applicable to my work with learning disabled teenagers, and the book is written in a very clear and conversational style. It's like sitting down for a great discussion with a master reading teacher.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teachers of Teens: Read This!
Try this book: easily readable, conversational, and inspirational, it develops ways to reach those who do not really understand what they read. There are anecdotal narratives, each with suggestions for techniques to use in the classroom, and these help focus on the problem as well as possible solutions. I would like to see it used in teacher training classes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice tool for new teachers.
This book is a practical resource for new secondary teachers. The authors discuss classroom set-up, student resources, and behavior problems. There are many ideas ready for application in your own classroom and no boring or unnecessary narratives that most classroom management books have.
5-0 out of 5 stars Harry K. Wong Implements Research of Evertson
In his video series "The Effective Teacher" Part II: The First Days of School, Harry Wong cites the work of Carolyn Evertson and how he implements her research in the classroom:Wong says "Now, why do I assign seats? Now, you may know the name Carolyn Evertson. She is arguably the leading authority on classroom management. She did her work at the Univ. of Texas, Austin campus, many years ago. They wrote a book called Classroom Management for Elementary Teachers and a book called Classroom Management for High School and Junior High School Teachers. They went out and they looked at thousands and thousands of very effective teachers, and they went out and they looked at thousands and thousands of very ineffective teachers, and this is what they discovered. They discovered that effective teachers assign seats on the first day of school..."He shows a graphic of the covers of the two books. This is one of the books he refers to.Harry Wong is the author of the book The First Days of School.Anyone who liked The First Days of School, therefore, might be interested to read this resource that Harry Wong found to be useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars practical qnd classroom friendly
This book is a wonderful resource book for any Language Arts teacher. The key to successfully using it is to find out what the child needs to learn to do to become a better reader. Then Mrs. Beers has listed what to do, and even shows how it has worked with real students.I know the activities could be used with first graders and on up.I taught Reading Recovery for ten years and have studied struggling readers for forty years, and I know these resources will work.I also like the authors she used to gather her research. She didn't just research through books, but also practiced these herself.Mrs. Beers has included places for busy teachers to go easily to find the materials to use.All Language Arts teachers shoud use this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST RESOURCE FOR GED SUCCESS!!!
I am a vocational counselor helping adults return to school to learn a new career. Most have been out of school for 10-30 years. This tool helps them recover years of ability lost to non-use, but most especially to score much higher on their entrance exams to the colleges, which greatly reduce the number of remedial classes they have to take to bring their skills up enough to enter a degree program. In addition, those that dropped out of High School have been able to get their GED within as little as a week, or the time it takes to get scheduled into the local testing center (usually at your local Community College). It has been the single most important resource for nearly every student I have, and has proven its worth time and time again. You cannot lose with this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars McGraw-Hill's GED with CD-ROM by Patricia Mulcrone
As a teacher, I appreciate this very effective tool in helping students feel successful. Very well planned, this book maximizes their chances to get through all the material and pass the GED exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it, so I have to buy it...
I'm currently facing the end of my first year teaching, and I'm already looking forward to the new beginnings of next year.As a "newbie", I picked this book up from my school's professional library and fell in love with its conversational writing style and practical ideas.Frustrated by the fact that I can't write in the school's copy, I'm now buying my own.You should too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for new teachers!
This is a very great, practical, realistic book.It is a very easy read, and is only 120 pages total. If you already know alot about reading comprehension, it is nothing earth-shattering, and you may only pick up a few things from it.But, if you are a relatively new teacher, this book could help you significantly.Tovani's writing is very simple, easy to follow, and straightforward, and you can tell she is still a classroom teacher and not some out-of-touch researcher, since all her tips are very practical.Even if you already know alot about comprehension, this book will probably give you a few new things to think about, and it can easily be read in one weekend. It will not be a waste of your money!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Do I Really Have to Teach Reading?Content Comprehension, Grades 6-12
This book is short and to the point but filled with valuable information for teachers who want to strengthen reading comprehension in their classrooms.I highly recommend this book as a starter text for both teachers who are motivated to learn more about content area reading and those who may be hesitant. It's a great title for a collegial study group. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Kids know what they WANT, but do they know what they NEED?
If you eat chips in class, the teacher will give you a detention.
4-0 out of 5 stars one of the best books for new or old teachers
I was in the bookstore browsing and found this book. I've been teaching college students for over ten years, but only began teaching community college four years ago, and thus feel a bit at sea sometimes with the "high school mentality." This book contains some things that are obvious to those who have been teaching for a long time, but it's almost certain that at least one or two of the views of the kids will be helpful and will translate directly into classroom practice in a way that few books on teaching do.
5-0 out of 5 stars Please read this book teachers!
This book ROCKS. I wish that all of my teachers would read it. High school kids are sick of being treated like second class citizens or caged animals and finally here we get some respect. 4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource
This is one textbook I actually enjoy reading! If you are interested in Young Adult literature, either from an educator's or a parental perspective, this book is a great place to learn more.Of course, being a textbook, there is a section on the history of the genre, but it's actually interesting. But the best feature of this bookis the the Focus Boxes which list current titles with brief summaries as examples of each format and genre. Also useful is a chronological list of award-winning books which appears near the beginning of the book. This is one text I plan to keep, then replace with newer editions as they are published.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for anyone interested in YA Lit
This textbook type book is an easy read, full of information regarding young adult characteristics in appealing writings, the growth and development of young adult literature and excellent listings, bibliographies and related web sites.Anyone working with young adults and literature will find this book a treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good resource.
Literature for Today's Young Adults, by Aleen Pace Nilsen and Kenneth L. Donelson, Sixth Edition. I purchased this book for a class in adolescent literature, and have found to be the book very good and very thorough. The book includes many chapters about modern adolescent literature and their various controversies.Besides being an interesting book, I found it very thorough because it includes varied points of view, and includes many articles written by the authors themselves who write novels for young adults. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quick delivery and very indepth book...
I was suppose to get this book anywhere between the 11th - 14th, but I got it on the 10th of that month! I got it earlier than I thought. This being early pleased me very much, but when I opened the box to get the book out I was even more impressed by the size of the book. Even further I was flipping through this book and again, I was impressed by the indepth topics. I like it very much. Although this book is not for me but instead for my mother. She is 46 and I am in my Senior year in high school. She wanted to get her GED before I left so that she would have a chance to do it. So I got on Amazon and boom! I had a good book for my mom, we start her lessons next week! LOL I get to be TEACHER!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great help for a low price!
A great help for a low price! Two of my family members used this book (don't worry, each got their own copy - they're starting college this fall!) to brush up before taking and PASSING their GED tests. Mission accomplished! The format is easy to follow and the information is just what you need. It emphasizes finding your weaknesses so you can strengthen them. I recommend it for homeschoolers needing a great way to prove they have a high school education and anyone needing to finish their high school education.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love "Side by Side"
I was from China and started my life in the USA as a graduate student in Engineering.Although I took the TOEFL before I came to USA, my English is not good enough to express myself clearly and accurately. I decided to improve my English about 4 months ago and started to borrow some ESL books from local libraries.
5-0 out of 5 stars SIde By Side Book 3
My wife and I have been using Side By Side since living in Japan as ESL teachers 1987-89.We used the first edition way back then.My wife still is active tutoring English to Japanese in our area of the USA and this is an excellent series for English learners. We would recommend it to anyone from any culture.

4-0 out of 5 stars A conversational supplement
This is an amazing series of books for any age beginners of Oral English as a Second Language (American English). I taught this series in China for 3 years, and am currently an M.Ed student. This series not only allows an inexperienced teacher to be able to jump into any class and feel confident teaching, but offers a strong order to the subject matter that is taught. The vocabulary and grammatical forms that are introduced are very useful in daily life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource forSchool Paper in WV
I ordered the handbook when our school decided to begin a school newspaper. I have not had to search for any other resource. This book has everything you might need. It begins with hands-on practical approaches to choosing a staff and things to consider before beginning the paper. It is followed by actual ideas that can be used to produce a true journalistic setting from which to publish the paper. There are many pages that can be reproduced. The book gives ideas for monthly columns as well as ideas for feature stories. It even has a page to reproduce "press badges" for the staff. Our sixth graders produce our school paper but this book would be good for any start-up or established paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have resource for any school newspaper
"Kids in print" is an excellent resource. The book is well organized and offers several tips on starting a school newspaper. There are also several "organizational" sheets that can be copied to help students stay on track while interviewing people and writing stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for HS English teachers!
Voice is perhaps the hardest of the 6 traits to teach. With my sophomore core English students, I would do 1 voice lesson each week for their warm up and it was amazing how much more accessible that vague idea of "voice" came to both myself and my students over the school year. The whole English department at my school uses Voice Lessons...9th grade teachers do a certain number, 10th grade, etc.By the time a student graduates, they will have done all the voice lessons.I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any English teacher or teacher who teaches writing (and which teachers don't?!).

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Beginning!
This book is good for a class warmup. It probably could benefit from more indepth questions or more complex examples built on the

5-0 out of 5 stars Any indication
I'm sure to buy this book today. I have the "Weather for Dummies" book, and if that is any indication, you simply can not go wrong with this book. The "Dummies" books are always filled with in depth information. I couldn't believe the amount of information the books hold. This book is definately a safe bet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent comprehensive resource
As a teacher and as a teacher-trainer, I have found this book to be an excellent source for readings and class discussions. It is a very practical book and is very detailed in describing all the options a teacher has in approaching different scenarios.I highly reccomend this to any beginning teacher.

1-0 out of 5 stars book review
I was required to use this book in a college class. There was nothing in the text I did not already know. The format is strange. There are very odd exercises in the book. This text is overly wordy, there is nothing educating in this text. This was by far the worst education text I have ever come across. ... Read more
