5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I needed for the CTEL
This text admirably addresses the CTEL exam.Pop for the third edition; it's worth it.And if it were up to me, this book's sections on immigration law, history, and diversity would be required reading for any educator.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource Book
I purchased this book for a college class and it was mostly review from other classes. However, I found the book easy to read and very informative. This single book covered about 4 or 5 other books from different courses. If you are a beginning teacher that wants to be able to teach to all of your students, than this book is a must. This great book covers SDAIE teaching and just other great concepts. If you have never taken a multilinguial course than this is money well spent. If you have had a number of those types of classes, than I would look for a book more catered to what you need. This is book is a great introductory book. Most students that I had in class kept the book as reference material and that says a lot because we use book money to live on until finicial aide comes in, LOL. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, Easy Reading Book for Teachers Who Want to Learn More About English Language Learners
I thought this book was very good for classroom teachers who want clear information on how to include English Language Learners in their classrooms. It is very difficult to explain to classroom teachers how to include students who are learning English in short sound bites. This book helps clarify information and teachers can read it at their leisure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for review your general grammar knowledge
I'M A SPANISH SPEAKER THAT WAS SEEKING FOR A BOOK THAT BEGINS ABOVE THE BEGINNERS LEVEL. THIS BOOK BEGINS WITH MORE COMPLEXGRAMMAR.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Self-Study Book
This is a great book for those who have exposed themselves in English speaking environment for quite a while and have got a basic English grammar knowledge, but always get confused by some "casual" grammar problems or something out of the expectations that you have learned from those"regular" grammar rules. In a word, this book rather focuson those "irregular"English grammar phenomenon that usedby those native speakers in their everyday life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for practicing.

5-0 out of 5 stars I take exception for its usefulness for EVERY teaching situation...
This book has been of limited usefullness for me. I've found only a few activities in here that would be practical for my classes of 40 Korean middle schoolers, but I also believe I'm in a bit of an unusual situation trying to teach English to such big classes. That being said, I did find it useful for, if nothing else, getting my own ideas rolling. I would also like to add that it's rather pricey for a flimsy little book, but I'm sure that if my situation were different it would have been well worth the money. I can pretty much recommend it to everyone EXCEPT those with unusually large class sizes, but it would be good for them too if they could find it used. Otherwise there are good resources to be found online for free.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Activity Resource Book
This book contains many quick activities that require little preparation. It's a good tool for use in the EFL classroom. Many of the activities seem geared for middle school and up, though they can be easily adapted for elementary students. This book would be quicker to use if the activities were marked as appropriate for beginner, intermediate and advanced at the beginning of the description.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is an excellent tool for beginners and advanced teachers alike. This book helps you find ways to teach English, and while you are using it you will develop your own unique ways of changing their material to fit your needs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love "Side by Side"
I was from China and started my life in the USA as a graduate student in Engineering.Although I took the TOEFL before I came to USA, my English is not good enough to express myself clearly and accurately. I decided to improve my English about 4 months ago and started to borrow some ESL books from local libraries.
5-0 out of 5 stars SIde By Side Book 3
My wife and I have been using Side By Side since living in Japan as ESL teachers 1987-89.We used the first edition way back then.My wife still is active tutoring English to Japanese in our area of the USA and this is an excellent series for English learners. We would recommend it to anyone from any culture.

4-0 out of 5 stars A conversational supplement
This is an amazing series of books for any age beginners of Oral English as a Second Language (American English). I taught this series in China for 3 years, and am currently an M.Ed student. This series not only allows an inexperienced teacher to be able to jump into any class and feel confident teaching, but offers a strong order to the subject matter that is taught. The vocabulary and grammatical forms that are introduced are very useful in daily life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for ELL in Elementary
I found this book had great strategies to apply in an elementary setting for all my students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical
I think this book has many practical ideas, not just for ELLs, but for teaching in traditional classrooms as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Idealistic
I agree that Herrell focuses on practice as well as theory. As a teacher in a high school with a large ELL population (I have from 12-18 kids in each class; large by ESL standards), I sometimes found her suggestions laughable. Although I became a teacher knowing that it is not, no matter what anyone says, an 8-4 job, I find it fascinating that she believes I have the time to keep organized folders and journals tracking the daily success of each student when public education demands so much mindless, useless paperwork and other duties that makes it a miracle that I can even finish grading and designing lesson plans at all. I believe Heller has some beautiful, albeit idealistic ideas, but she often seems to forget about the difficulties in classroom management and "school business" that prevents many wonderful ideas from taking place. I guess what I really mean is that I was hoping for suggestions on how to balance the "corporate" part of public education with effective, motivating strategies. Also, maybe high school is different. I think a lot of these strategies may work better with younger kiddoes, who are often much more motivated to learn.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
This book is pretty good.It has photocopiable games at the back that I use fairly often. My only complaint about this book is that it isn't organized in a way that lets me find specific activities for practicing specific grammar points. It's organized by type of game (i.e. picture games, word games, acting, etc.)But all in all, it's pretty good

4-0 out of 5 stars fun and fluency building for the language learner
"Keep Talking" contains over one hundred differentfluency-building activities for the language teacher to use eitherdirectly, or with modification, in her language classroom. Each activityhas a well defined purpose, whether it be functional or structural, and iscategorized according to language level, skill and student arrangement, stating clearly whether or not preparation is necessary, and how long thetasks typically take. The procedural instructions are lucid and relativelyeasy to convey to most groups of language learners, and there is also scopefor variation for many of these language games, along with helpful commentson how make such activities fun and achievable. If one also includes theimportance of making notes, and obtaining feedback, which Kippel suggestsin the introduction, then it is clear just how useful this book is.Although I was at first confused as to why the author grouped his languagelearning activities under themes such as jigsaw task, interview, or storytelling, rather than according to function or structure, I think his pointis to focus on fluency and engendering a communicative atmosphere, ratherthan to actually teach anything or practice something too specific. Theteacher's role, therefore, appears to be as a facilitator or classroommanager. In any case, the indexes include language structure (but notfunction) and level, making navigating relatively straight-forward."Keep Talking" also contains about sixty worksheets which can becopied for use in class. Although I no longer use them in my teachingsituation, I borrow ideas from them all the time. This book is not suitablefor formal institutions, but otherwise, whether you are new to languageteaching, or a seasoned pro, I feel fairly confident that there issomething in this book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An ESL Teacher's Best Friend
As an ESL teacher in China for the past 12 years, I have found this book a great help and, at times, a life-saver."Keep Talking" is one of the best sources of English language games and activities for the ESLclassroom.Logically arranged and with clear instructions on how to use, lanaguage level, time needed and aim of the activity, this book is a mustfor all ESL teachers, but especially for those teaching for a year or twooverseas without strong formal ESL training. You won't be disappointed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Resource
This book is packed full of useful grammar activities. They are easily classified according to grammar point and can be easily searched for use.I've used the activities numerous times, and there are a lot of great ideas in this book. The only thing that isn't so great is that the pictures have a late 70's or early 80's look, but it's not such a big problem since you can easily get pictures out of magazines or other such resources. Also, the English featured here is British English, so if you're teaching American English, you have to adjust some of the phrases or vocabulary.Other than that, it's great.Check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Your ESL Library!
I borrowed a copy from my ESL instructor while student-teaching. It is FANTASTIC. I have found that the activities proposed in the book can also be modified to fit another activity -- or to even get my own creativejuices flowing. There have been times when I felt overwhelmed by all thegood examples and couldn't pick just one. It's easy to carry and pack --don't leave home without it!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most valuable ESL resources I have seen.
Imaginative, interesting, engaging and well organized this book is one ofthe most valuable resources I have seen in nearly three years of full timeESL teaching. The book is divided into two parts.Part One provides a clearand concise introduction to grammar teaching in the foreign languageclassroom, a very useful guide to designing and presenting grammar-practiceactivities and some tips for getting the most out of coursebook exercises. The heart of the book, however, is Part Two which consists of nearly 200game-like grammar practice activities. The activities are grouped intosections according to grammatical categories. The categories are orderedalphabetically and cross-referenced in the text. The descriptions of theactivities are accompanied, where appropriate, by reproducable sample textsand visuals. The activities are not classified by proficiency level or ageand the author encourages teachers to adapt them to suit their ownstudents. I have found that most of the activities are readily adaptable todifferent levels, and although most as presented in the book seemorientated toward adult students I have successfully adapted many for usewith teenagers and younger children. Likewise the activities are notclassified by skill practiced as many are designed or can be adapted topractise any or all of the four skills. This book is also exceptional inthat it doesn't fall foul of that ill which inexplicably plagues manysimilar books - a cumbersome and unwieldy index. The index in this book, although perhaps not quite as complete as it could be, is among the verybest I have seen in this type of publication. A single alphabetical listidentifies activities by term, topic and title. In addition there is aclear list of contents at the front of the book. The book's easy-to-useformat, comprehensive coverage, sturdy paperback construction and handysize make it an indispensable addition to any ESL teacher's tool-kit. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Helped sooth my nerves about being a first-time ESL teacher
Although there wasn't much directly useful to my situation (Public middle school in Korea. I have classes of nearly 40 students and see each class once per week), the book helped me get an idea of what my role was going to be and what I needed to do in order to prepare. I have even been able to adapt a few of the activity ideas into my monster-sized classes. Personally, I would like to see a longer discussion about having large class sizes, and strategies for dealing with them, but obviously no one can write a book perfectly catered to everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, no nonsense book
This book is essential reading for all English teachers. It has been great for me as I have used it daily with my TEFL course, and will be referring to it for many months I guess.I'm sure though that there are many English teachers who already feel they are experienced but would benefit from Harmer's book as "every day's a school day!"

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED THIS BOOK
I was a little worried about the book after reading some of the reviews. I find this book to be so incredible and easy to use. I think it covers everything you need to teach your children to read. I think every parent needs a copy. Please do not be scared of by the "complexity" of the rules, instead give you child the credit they deserve and the opportunity to thrive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is a wonderful system and it's very easy to impliment. I saw this demonstrated once and immediately recognized that it hit all the areas of learning. By writing and making the sounds and seeing the letters and hearing the sounds children begin to read. 1-0 out of 5 stars You will either love it or hate it
This is one of those books that polarizes people: either they love it or they hate it.I'm in the latter camp.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Required for TESOL class
The book easily explains different methods for teaching English Language learners.I recommend the book for TESOL instructors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wrong table of contents
The table of contents that Amazon has listed here is from the 1986 edition and is very misleading and an injustice to this important and valuable book. The new 2001 edition has 19 chapters and is very expanded and reorganised to include many new communicative approaches.Look at another online bookseller for a proper table of contents. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Creative and a good foundation
Provides various activities that teach many aspects of English as well as grammar points using communicative methodology. These activities are creative and helpful. What is so useful is that these activities can be modified/altered to suit your class level. Some of the expressions and topics are a little strange and not really suitable to use in class for young learners who are at beginning level. But of course you can alter them.I have been able to make up many of my own lesson ideas from this book, written by ESL teaching veterans."Grammar Games" is very helpful.I also recommend "More Grammar Games" which is a part-two, or addition to this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars And now for something completely different...
Grammar Games contains fifty-six language learning activities divided into five sections; competitive games, collaborative sentence-making games, awareness activities, grammar through drama, and miscellany. About one fifth of the games deal directly with grammatical accuracy by exposing students to correct or incorrect sentences, with a caveat from the author urging us to accept that students who are highly focused will not imprint the wrong sentences that the theories of Skinner or Krashen may suggest.I can't say for sure whether incorrect grammar will be unconsciously learned or not, but it is clear that not everyone will be interested in these kind of activities anyway.I was therefore pleased that the rest of the book covered material that would appeal to many different types of learner, not just the analytically inclined. Grammar Games has a distinctly British, slightly seventies, and somewhat eccentric feel to it. We can learn by being physically active, or by being silent and reflective. There are board games and gambling games. You can vote for the best, play snap, take part inan auction, or do back-writing. You can even brainstorm why two people would want to exchange socks on a train - not everyone's cup of tea, perhaps.I enjoyed reading Grammar Games because most of the activities looked interesting and highly original, and that there were many that I would like to try out with my students, someday. For the EFL teacher searching for new ideas on how to teach grammar while having fun, whether you are experienced or novice, I recommend that you take a look at Mario Rinvolucri's Grammar Games.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow- implicit grammar instruction that's cool!
This book was recommended to me by a professsor who had used it with her Middle School ESL kids. After having it a week, I have to say it is fabulous.I had been looking for ways to teach grammar to my junior high kids, without tedious explanations of grammatical rules, worksheets or diagramming. The day after I received it, I was able to start the kids on a game where they could internalize grammatical rules, and demonstrate what they already understood about the deep structure of English. The only preparation required was writing a sentence on the board, and they were involved for twenty minutes. The only reservation I have in recommending this book is that it is British, and intended for adult learners.I have had to adapt some of the language to make it easier for my kids to understand. ...
