5-0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary teaching!
The concepts in this book, along with those found in Larry's other book, Unwrapping the Standards, can revolutionize the way state standards are met in the classroom.I recently had the honor of meeting Larry in person and taking a four day workshop from him.He is a wonderful human being who is passionate about teaching children in a manner that actually matters.I have implemented some of Larry's strategies in my own classroom, and my students found them engaging and exciting. These books are well written and packed with information.Although I would recommend taking a workshop from Larry in order to make the best use of the books, one could certainly read the books independently and use them effectively. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition
This edition is similar to the previous one. It is without peer in terms of scholarship. It is also not easy to read and digest, and that's the way it should be for a serious treatment of research methods. After all, the applications of such methods and the interpretation of results can profoundly affect our lives.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book but a terrible textbook
Without any doubt, this is a comprehensive book in this field. However, because the authors tried to demonstrate their superior english writting abilities, they made the whole text hard to understand for students.Frommy point of view, as a new professor, I don't believe that recommendingthis book is appropriate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book
This is a practitioner's book, not a scolar's. I'm not a scolar -- never have been and never will be.I love this book. It's lucid, it's sensible and it's great statistics. It goes thoroughly into the logic of linearmodel ANOVAs yet the bulk of the exposition is in the simple Englishlanguage -- it has no calculus and no eigenvectors and almost no matrixalgebra. You need an acquaintance with elementary one-way ANOVA but no morebackground than that. The authors pace it carefully and are not afraid of abit of repetition for the sake of clarity (something I always appreciatewhen I'm reading new technical material). It's one of the best $105dollars I've ever spent. I got loads out of it all the way through and it'sa big book. The explanation of multivariate repeated measures is worth theprice alone. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars For the fellow students in KOREA
I am a high school teacher of physics in KOREA and also working on science research as a graduate student. 1-0 out of 5 stars Not for the graduate student/professional
Availability of books on case study methodology remains limited. Case study as a method of research - used particularly among social scientists - is still developing as a reputable approach. This book was appropriate for lower division, undergraduate students - but woefully inadequate for the upper division or graduate student and/or practitioner. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for those working on a dissertation
If you're looking for a practial book on completing a case study this is it!The chapters are organized in such a way that the process is laid out and easily understood. The book is reader friendly and doesn't spend muchtime in the technical aspect of case study. It allows the reader tounderstand and then sit down and get to work.I've read several booksdealing with case study and this one I found most useful. It is writtenduring the authors time of teaching a course. The benefit of the book forthe reader is that you most likely don't have time to take a coursespecifically on case study and can read the book in place of taking thecourse!I am much further ahead in the completion of my own dissertationcase study since I've read the book. I recommend it to anyone moving inthis direction and believe that you will find it understandable, useful, and key in your successful completion of a case study.Wow - what a find! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Narrative statistics
I read the whole 3rd edition of this book and I did not have many complains, other than the chapter on 2 way ANOVA was too brief. I tried to look inside this book, but such info is not available here at this moment. At least I know the former edition was really good. Everything else than 2 way ANOVA was explained in narrative ways that definitively help to understand this topics much better than so many other book filled of junk equations. However, I'm not so sure if you should use this book if you're currently taking a statistic related course because you may need immediate answers, just equations and repetitive solutions. The proper and deeper knowledge that will be useful in real life when doing research takes much longer time to learn and you shold take it at some time later on. I am not a psychology major, but a chemistry one and the book is just as helpful to me as to the aimed audience, it's math after all, 1 + 1 is 2 no matter which one is your major.

Byrne offers a more readable alternative to the hard core approach of learning EQS from its official manual. The latter presents a heavily mathematical framework that might be offputting to some readers who lack a strong statistical background.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finest qualitative research book available!
I have read several dozen qualitative research texts, as I have taught classes in this area for quite a few years, and have given seminars on qualitative research for the faculty of a number of graduate schools across the united states. The book avoids some of the extremes of more recent textbooks that advocate methods that can barely be called "research" (perhaps they could be called "art" or sometimes "literature" but not "research"). This a very human, yet systematic approach to research. I read most of the book in manuscript form prior to the first edition, then read the first edition when it came out, and then again read it in the second edition. Subsequently I read part or all of several dozen other texts, and while some came close, this is by far the best text available. Two others that come close are the Handbook of Qualitative Research in Education that Judith Preissle and Margaret LeCompte edited (with the help of a third person), and the newest edition of Michael Quinn Patton's classic introductory work.Read more

Easy to read, clear instructions on how to use statistical formulas and what all the symbols mean. I wish I had gotten this book earlier. 5-0 out of 5 stars Critical Ethnography: An Exemplar in Theory and Practice
This text in critical qualitative methodology is so clearly written and usefully crafted that it stands as an exemplar in its capacity to deliver both theory and practice related to conducting critical qualitativeresearch. Carspecken delivers extremely practical and clear suggestions forconducting research, while including the reader in the theoretical dialogueentailed in the pratice of critical ethnography. I appreciated the wayCarspecken did not foster any division between the practice of criticalresearch and the theory of critical research. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent read, very helpful
What a great way to learn some of the basics of statistics. This book is meant to cover most of the material that a standard statistics textbook would, but using solely examples from the game of baseball. I picked it up primarily for the sections on probability, but have enjoyed the entire thing so far. Obviously a lot of work went into its preparation, and one of the most impressive aspects is the sheer number of exercises at the end of each chapter -- more than enough to reinforce the central points.

5-0 out of 5 stars A hit about hits
If there is one thing that separates the baseball fan from those of other sports, it is their fascination with statistics. By this, I mean the raw data, not the detailed analysis. An enormous amount of data is kept about baseball players and their accomplishments, and nearly all of it is online. It is very detailed, as it is possible to obtain data regarding how a particular batter performed when facing a particular pitcher with a particular ball and strike count. With all of this data available, it is possible to find some raw data that can be used to illustrate any analytical technique demonstrated in basic statistic classes. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for exactly what it is intended for...
I wouldn't say that I read the book cover to cover, but for a class textbook in graduate school, I think it was very helpful for its intended purpose. I used it where I need it (where I needed brushing up in certain areas of statistics especially) - and I think this book is a good reference book. The indexes are great, and the workbook actually does a good job of clarifying certain aspects of research that I was unceratin on. ... Read more
