Nicely Done.
If you are looking for a short, understandable compendium of how the US Constitution evolved, then this is the book for you. Carol Berkin has done a very good job of putting these critical deliberations, the pros and the cons, forward in layman's terms. Better yet, the prose is clear, crisp and incisive. This is a succinct volume in which every word counts, so you will probably want to read it through more than once.
Not Brilliant but Worth the Read

Another winner out of the Constitutional Library of America's foremost Economist during his lifetime!
A beautifully, short, concise book
Down with the Fed
The Case Against the Fed is one of many of Rothbard's personal attacks on the government.Murray Rothbard, an Austrian economist, has provided yet another great work in a small package.This book runs similar to What Has Government Done to Our Money.Much of the same material is in here, dealing with things like the evolution of the monetary system in the United States.However, Rothbard shows in this book the close ties with the Fed, wall street bankers, and the government.Although, I am not sure how correct is ties are within the book; it is still a remarkable book none the less.

Good.
I was assigned several chapters from this book to read for one of my political science classes.I can't say I've come across any other books like this that describe the nature of electoral politics and realignments when they occur.
Great book but a bit too expensive...
I just finished writing a critique on this book for a core political science class and it's definitely a classic.I would recommend it to all political science majors and anybody interested in voting behavior. But again, why is it so expensive?

A good start ...
I found this book engaging for the most part. I especially appreciated some of the snippets of speeches and the description of the interplay between Madison and Patrick Henry and James Monroe and others.

Awesome Book
As a rookie campaign manager for a tax levy that was already defeated once, I needed to learn and learn fast.That's what this book helped me do. I've practically worn out some sections refering back to them time and time again.We are just entering the actual campaign, but I feel very confident with my campaign plan, and I am ready.
GET This Book
This book is absolutely fabulous.If you are even thinking about running for office (at any level) or working on an issue-based like a school bond, GET this book.It's written in clear language for those of us who are not political nerds.It also has tons of good examples.

Catherine Shaw's Campaign Manger: A Blueprint for Success
I recently finished working on a local State Senate race where we used Shaw's book as a manual for each course of action in our campaign. I was very impressed with the book's clear direction and insightful reasoning. We won our race because each step we took made sense and Shaw's book influenced our decision making process in every way. I highly recommend that anyone who thinks about running or participating in a local election reads and uses Shaw's book. We would not have been so successful without it.

Imperfect, but still the best US Government Text
I have taught AP US Government and Politics for 5 years, and in the course of reviewing most every textbook on the market this one is probably the best overall.
Badly Written Text
This was the assigned textbook for a local university course on American government and politics. I ended up dropping the course largely because of this textbook. It is written a much lower than university level and seems biased towards conservative viewpoints (maybe the non-Texas edition is less slanted). In the first chapter (fourth paragraph) I learned the following:

I totally disagree with the other reviewer. This is truly a top-notch textbook. I have been teaching introductory American Government courses at the university level for 4 years, and I can honestly say that this is one of the finest introductory textbooks available. It covers all aspects of American government in a clear, concise manner that makes it very easy to read. The book is very well-organized, and it truly makes teaching American government a joy. Different and Entertaining
Entertaining book following the Republican Primaries of 1996.You learn a lot about the candidates that you may have never known, and even more so about the candidates you never even knew.There is a lot of focus on Morey Taylor.For some reason, I never remembered him, but liked a lot about him after reading this book.Good entertaining read.Primarily for political junkies.

Delightful
In Losers, Michael Lewis gives the reader a fun ride on the campaign planes and busses of the also ran candidates in 1996.
Morry Taylor for President!!
This is a pretty typical Michael Lewis read: exceptionally descriptive, hilarious and insightful.He does great work seeing the various campaigns for what they are; and is able to stay objective throughout the experience, though obviously he forms a special connection to Morry Taylor.Read more

Fair information, edited by a twit.
I could not finish reading the book, because I could not take the authors seriously. The many misspellings and mechanical errors were far to distracting. This text is a worthy example of how NOT to write a book.

Excellent resourse for post-modern media theory.
As the media becomes one of the most dominant means by which we frame our social reality, it becomes crucial for each of us to understand how media can become a mean to someone's own end. An excellent treatment of hegemonyand dominant/ prefered readings. This should be a required text in allcommunication/ social science programs. But it ain't bad readin' for anyoneelse who consumes media either, namely you!

Much too american for the Canadian Social Worker
I purchased this very expensive, yet thin paperback text for a social policy University course.The book is well written, but the perspectives are so American that I question the usefulness for a Canadian student of the subject. Great Book
Given the history of this book, it is almost a classic. No course on Welfare policy could not refer to it.

On of the best introductions to social work policy ever.
This is an excellent book. I've used it in undergraduate (and graduate) courses here at the University of Chicago and have been VERY pleased with the result. A trial attorney and a Democrat, Schippers was hired by Republican congressman Henry Hyde to lead an oversight investigation of the Justice Department, then was redirected to handle the impeachment. Anyone who thinks Clinton did not deserve to be impeached should be ashamed of themselves, and should have their wives and daughters subjected to "The Clinton Treatment" which David Schippers does such a yeoman's job of documenting in this succinct and well-written expose. Such an amoral person--and any supporter of Clinton would have to amoral, practically by definition--should also read more from independent, non-corporate-owned news sources. For if they did so, they would soon be confronted with the staggering plethora of other, more heinous crimes committed by Clinton and his Arkansas Mafia.
Recent history revised
This is quick revisionism from a hired gun. Perhaps the events of the Clinton presidency are too soon for anyone, liberal or conservative, to be objective, but it will never happen if people keep buying books like this.

Knowledge is Power?
The fragments of stories that arise from the Clinton impeachment period grow further and wider with each retelling of the story from the perspective of many who claim to know what everyone else doesn't. The analysis of each of these books reminds us that like today in the case of the Iraq War and the Bush first term, the American people actually know very little of the behind the scenes events, or their accuracy. What is clear, however, is that the White House environment has for some time now become one of the most hostile territories ofAmerica's political structure. It certainly seemed to be from the earliest time that Clinton took office until the time he left. Who knows how much is true, or false, and how it may, or may not, have been handled, and by whom? Though we may get some inkling of how the White House is designed to work from theWest Wing series, it may well be the ideal, and not the reality. If everything that has been told about Clinton was true, the American people would have seen the greatest Jeckyll and Hyde act of all time, it seems, and that would be doubtful and improbable. If it is true, it would be unusual that Hillary would want to run for President, and the people of America may need to give far more scrutiny to the Presidents it chooses than they have in the past. Either way, the impact has been felt in all quarters of the nation, and will not likely be easily forgotten. Questioning how much knowledge the people have, and how much power over the office people have are critical issues at this time in America because of the accumulated knowledge we have of all past Presidents, that grows with each new review of what America thought she knew, but found later she didn't. ... Manditory reading for anyone interested in Laws and Rights
This is nothing less than an exact translation of the Federalist papers for perople of our generations to read and understand.I found this necessary, as the truth and the history of our country is so clouded by media and revisionism, that it becomes very important to really look and study why our country was set up like it is.I recommend it to everyone.But I especially recommend it to students of law and our country.It is interesting, and well written.It easily is equivalent to a number of college level classes in constitutional law.

Great FP Primer
I think this book would make a great high school text for students in American Government classes. I'm sure at college levels the FPs aren't too hard to read in their old English, but the index is great. And the book is a testament to how wise the founding fathers who made the case for our current constitution really were. Many of the things they warned us against are indeed coming true in our democracy today. An Aid To Understanding Our Political Heritage
Mary E. Webster has performed an invaluable public service with this book. The Federalist Papers are among the most significant documents of this nation's founding era, yet they go largely unread, primarily because of their legalistic tone and complex sentence structure. As Webster states in her introduction, she has no political or social axe to grind and no agenda to fulfill. She simply wished to make these important documents available to a wider audience, and has succeeded admirably in that goal.

an enriched and inciteful book...
This book is amazing. The reason why I am now a political science major. It is the book that my government teacher assigned in high school, and has thus shaped my opinions towards the constitution and our political system today. It offers a great dichotomy between classic works (such as the federalist papers) and contemporary classics (such as Robert Putnam's 'Bowling Alone').
