This book shares the light, color, and poetry of Mexico with its readers. Fun!
I found "The Scariest Alphabet Book" to be a fun and educational book. The pictures are amazing, and the fact that two 10 year olds wrote it amazes me even more! This is a wonderful book with a story for each festival.There are 8 stories and a short description of how each festival is celebrated, and it's history.It is a multicultural-multi-religion book, including Purim (Jewish), Holi (Hindu), Vesak (Buddhist), Tanabata (Japanese), Halloween (Celtic), Christmas (Christian), Kwanzaa (Carribean) and New Year (Russian).Obviously this book isn't meant to be the "last word" on any of these festivals, but to give a bit more background to festivals you might celebrate, and increase knowledge of those you don't.There are full color pictures and edgings done in the style of the country involved for each story.Although the reading level is listed at 8-12, children much younger will be happy to sit and listen. The origins and meanings of the symbols of Thanksgiving
Edna Barth cites Benjamin Franklin's wish that the Turkey had been selected as the representation of the United States since it was a much more respectable bird than the Bald Eagle, as well as a true original native of North America.Instead, the turkey is a symbol of one of the most American of holidays, Thanksgiving.For young readers who always think of the little band of Pilgrims who founded Plymouth Colony celebrating the first Thanksgiving, Barth and artist Ursula Arndt (pen drawings with yellow shading) try to provide a truer picture of what actually happened (e.g., Pilgrims were dressed in bright colors, not the drab costumes we traditionally depict them wearing) and how other symbols came to be associated with the holiday.From the turkey and cornstalks and ears of multicolored Indian corn and the fruits of the harvest spilling out of a horn of plenty, Barth explains everything (including my favorite, how we got from Crane Berry to Cranberry).In fact, Barth traces the holiday back to the harvest festivals of the Egyptians, Hebrews, Greek, and Celts.There is also a list of Thanksgiving stories, poems, pageants, and plays for future reference."Turkeys, Pilgrims, and Indian Corn" is one of several books authored by Barth looking at holiday symbols: other books cover Valentine, Halloween, Christmas and Easter.All of these books are written to be accessible to children and even though they are now over a quarter century old, they remain solid sources of information.All in all, this little book is a nice concise presentation of information useful to students and teachers alike at this time of year.

Anything handled by Hanawalt is worth reading

It's about time
As the author mentions, books focusing on environmental graphics are few and far between (a quick Amazon search for "festival graphics" and "environmental graphics" leaves you with many out-of-print titles and incomplete descriptions of content). Gail Finke not only compiles photographic documentation of logos, signage, banners, and merchandise from various events and festivals of the 1980s and '90s (especially in Ohio), but offers insight into what worked and didn't work. She also suggests a few resources for further research, which is nice because, as I said, it's hard to find books that focus on environmental design.

Trenchant Study of Folklife Festival
This book is fascinating but somewhat over-written.Cantwell started out his research by working on a history of the Festival of American Folklife.When this project was curtailed due to foreseen circumstances, he reworked his research into a review and critique of the festival.The book examines the festival in terms of ways in which participants, performers, producers, audience members, and others in the cast of characters act out their various roles on the mall in Washington DC.Cantwell focuses his study on the idea that the festival provides a way to break stereotypes about other people.He develops his argument to emphasize that stereotyping can involve a range of factors including arbitration of meanings as well as enagements with "the other."Throughout the book, he makes deep inquiries into the salience of stereotyping within American history and culture.The book is best when Cantwell writes interpretive descriptions of what he observed at the festival and what he has researched in archives and libraries.At times, however, the bulky theoretical apparatus and the over-blown jargon detracts from the rich, sensitive insights that the writer makes about American (folk)life.Despite the opaqueness of many sections, this book is an amazing study of festivity in American life. ...
