3-0 out of 5 stars Quality, But Difficult, Read
This books will offer an excellent overview of Christmas if you can get through the prose.Written in a by-gone time, this book may challenge readers.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Book For All Christmas Lovers
I really enjoyed this book.Clement A. Miles draws from a rich history of celebrating the season. Here we can see where the Church would take a pagan custom and "Christianize" it.The end result is that most of these customs, especially the celebration of Christmas on December 25, have competed with the pagan ritual or observance so that the pagan religous significance is no longer left. The Christian version is the reality that usually comes down to us today.1-0 out of 5 stars A Difficult read
Although the information is located, somewhere, in this edition it is difficult to cut through the use of "Ye Kings English" Reading this book is like reading an old kings james version of the Bible.(Not that the KJV is bad, just tasking to get through all the "Thee's & Thou's)The information about Christmas is in the book, it just seems to take forever to get around the word usage. I also found the order in which the information is presented not easy to follow. In my opinion if you are looking for just "history of Christmas" Go some place else FAST, before you fall asleep reading this snoozer! If you so choose to purchase this edition take no-doz and good luck! ... Editorial Review

"Halloween is many things to many people; we do not celebrate the day in any one way." So Jack Santino writes in this first ever collection of essays dedicated to the study of Halloween and related festivals. Thirteen folklore and culture scholars examine the evolution of Halloween from its Celtic origins through its adaptation into modern culture. Essays on holiday customs describe harvest and autumnal rituals in Scotland, new Halloween traditions in response to legends about contaminated candy, the custom of "pranking" (more popular in some areas of the U.S. than trick-or-treating), England's Guy Fawkes Day and a parallel Bonfire Night in Newfoundland, and the development of American trick-or-treating in the years 1940-1990. 5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book on fall and harvest folk customs. Wow!!
This book remains one of my all-time favorite books on folk holidays. A series of essays on various fall and harvest celebrations, it centers around Halloween, but branches out to discuss celebrations from Christmasmummers parades of the Ulster Scots and cutting the last sheaf of wheat, toBonfire night in Newfoundland, to modern day trick-or-treat scaremyths.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to the celebration of Kwanzaa.
Ms. Harris' book, "A Kwanzaa Keepsake: Celebrating the Holiday With New Traditions and Feasts," is excellent.I knew nothing about Kwanzaa when I picked it up but felt as though I had been thoroughlyintroduced to a marvelous seven-day series of ceremonies, feasts andcelebrations.I came away with a great deal of respect for Kwanzaa and theseven principles behind it.It is unfortunate, however, that the creatorof Kwanzaa,Maulana Karenga, felt it necessary to discriminate against allbut African Americans, for all mankind would benefit from participating inthis moving celebration. We could all stand to be affirmed and reaffirmedas members of our families, our communities and our cultures on an annualbasis. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful text from a simpler time...
This is one of two titles by Elizabeth Hough Sechrist that I have always treasured (the other being "Heigh-Ho for Hallowe'en!" which is sadly still out of print). I first found her work, appropriately enough, when I was a child. Several of her books about holidays were in our children's library at school, and they were that type of book which I had to check out again and again because they were so interesting.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Embrace the dead
Garciagodoy book opened my eyes to the depth of history and spirituality that is integral to the Day of the Dead. Her book is an unusual combination of scholarship and personal reflection. As an American whose family and culture pushes death aside as taboo, I was enthralled by how Mexicans remember and love their dead with humor and reverance.A reminder that under our skin we are all skeletons and that our dead deserve our continued love and remembrance. As described by Garciagodoy the celebration of Day of the Dead is an opportunity to bring death and the dead into the lives of the living in a manner rarely seen in the United States. One caveat:her book is not a coffee table book to be skimmed in an evening. It is an in-depth exploration of a fascinating subject. For those who are really interested, it is a must read. ...
