Wonderful and eye opening
Well tomorrow is thanksgiving so I pulled out this book to get some ideas and I ended up just sitting here reading chapter after chapter so I thought I'd write a review.Theres such a wealth of information contained in this book - all sorts of interesting things about Thanksgiving and its origins, some wonderful stories from the old myths and oh, just a super section on animals within the chapter on Symbols of the Season.We have Turkey Vultures that migrate in each year within a day or so of the equinox each year and they stay for a bit.There's a wonderful section on the Turkey Vulture and honoring them.(The native americans called them Peace Eagles.There's a super chapter on rituals with poems honoring mother earth, and even a feast (menu and recipes as well as a blessing).I'm vegetarian and I was so pleased to see a recipe for vegetarian chili.There are some fun crafts like making amulets and other fun activities for connecting with the earth.Simply wonderful!My favorite of the Llewellyn series so far!

Wonderful addition to any Craft library
This was the first book in the Llewelyn Sabbat series that I purchased, and it is still my favorite.Mabon had always been one of those holidays I celebrated the same dull, dreary way year in and year out -- until I got this book. A Time of Blessings and Thanksgiving!!!

This Book Started a Revolution
I used to hate holidays because I associated them with eating and drinking and spending too much. An excellent, well written and concise children's book
This book is well written, with short and clear sentences describing everything a child needs or wants to know about the Thanksgiving Holiday.It's great for the classroom, for teachers to explain Thanksgiving to children between the ages of 3 and 7 years old. I have had requests from at least 4 teachers, when they have borrowed my copy of the book in the past, to obtain the book for them, but I have been told that it is out of print. ... Read more

Mistitled
This is a scholary work mainly on how prehistoric cultures marked the solstice and equinox.The bulk of the book touches lightly on the celebrations throughout the world.It is interesting, if not a little dry. The remaining chapters suggest ways in which people can celebrate on their own. Alternative Holiday Traditions

Outstanding Book . . . Poor Edition
Pieper's argument is outstanding, expansive and joyful.This particular edition, on the other hand, is riddled with typographical errors that make the reading more of an effort than it would otherwise be.One example is that the letter "b" often appears as the letter "h".One wonders why these errors were allowed to make it into print and thus sully what is otherwise a very pleasant way to pass an afternoon.

What is Joy?
Father Thomas Hopko has remarked, along with many others, that man is essentially homo adorans. That is, we are created to glorify and celebrate. God, the chief object of our glorification, and the very nature and cycle of our existence are the continual subjects of adoration and festive reflection across so many cultures and times. Even when the concept of God is removed from society, there persists the nagging need to commemorate and celebrate the past in terms quite religious. Memorial Day is a real anamnesis, Thanksgiving is eucharistic, etc. Some will disagree with this thesis, but I think it bears consideration. A plea for a more joyful life
Josef Pieper is probably best known for his book "Leisure: The Basis of Culture."This book on festivity is a good companion to that volume.Pieper discusses festivity's contrast to ordinary, everyday work, but points out that festivity involves more than the absence of labor. Real festivity also requires a quality of spirit which makes enjoymentpossible, and that quality of spirit is love.He says, "One who lovesnothing and nobody cannot possibly rejoice."The artificial festivalscreated by business can not possibly regenerate us the way festival ismeant to do, because they are rooted in acquisitiveness rather than loveand generosity of spirit.This is a beautiful book which will make youwant to celebrate something truly festive! ... A disappointment
Aveni had a great opportunity, and he blew it with inconsistent delivery and narcissistic self-reference.This might be a fine book if entitled "A Professor Ruminates on Holidays".However, huge digressions into his personal experiences of solstice ceremonies in Latin America, for example, spoil the narrative rhythm and the scholarly tone.
