4-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to a child's Thanksgiving
Like other reviewers, I also think that this is an appropriate book for children around the theme of Thanksgiving. The book looks at the lives of the children:their hardships, their work, their wonder.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Review of "The Pilgrims First Thanksgiving" by Ann McGovern
My children are 3 and 5 at this time (boy and girl) and I have been having a hard time finding a good age appropriate book about Thanksgiving.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Thanksgiving Classic Updated With New Illustrations!
The previous edition of this book, published in 1973, has been a favorite introduction to the Pilgrims for primary students in our school for many years. Written at about a third grade reading level, it works as a readable chapter book, as well as a quick read-aloud. The black, white and turquoise drawings in the older version were adequate, but the text always deserved more detailed and interesting illustrations. While I have not see this new edition, it appears that this situation has now been remedied.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to share with your family at Thanksgiving
This book is well written with great facts about the pilgrims' journey and experiences once they reached America. It also includes passages from the Pilgrims' journals and letters, which makes it personal. A great book to share at Thanksgiving.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a tribute!
This is a great book to remember from whence we came and thank God for the manifold blessings he has bestowed, not only on our country, but in our own personal lives and families.3-0 out of 5 stars The book is fine, but the CD is awful
If you're into Pilgrims, then this book is worth a gander. But whatever you do, toss the CD as soon as possible. Arranged and performed by someone whose sense of tempo fell overboard on the journey from England and who thinks the hymn "For the Beauty of the Earth" is a dirge, the CD will send your family into torpor and make the musically inclined among you choke on the bread pudding. But the pictures are nice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A former Macy's employee's viewpoint
This book tells the whole story of how the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade has become America's number 1 parade. It tells how it has grown. The story of the floats, the ballons and the guest artists. A book the whole family can enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice celebration of the parade!
This is a good photographic book celebrating the Macy's Parade. The pictures of the balloons and floats over the years are great--my nephew has enjoyed it as much as I have.A good gift for kids and adults alike--I'm giving a few as gifts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to retail in business, cultural customs
I'll point to the already existing reviews on this page as insightful enough as to the book's contents, but do also want to iterate that this book does stretch to some other lesser-known or recognized holidays in America, including Devil's Night, Sweetest Day, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa.
5-0 out of 5 stars Give this book a peep!
The holidays have never looked so horrifying. But the rubbernecker in me will not put down this wonderful examination of corporate manipulations of our holiday revelry. Beautfully designed, smartly written, funny, sincere and cynical. Also nice to see a publisher actually sew their books, ensuring they last for generations to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Holiday Smorgasbord of Images and Ideas
Sometimes I have to restrain myself from punching in the nose those who bemoan the excessive commercialism of "the holidays" (as if said holidays forcibly removed them from their otherwise impeccably ascetic lives). Now, instead of suppressing the punch, I can point the whiners to this wonderful new book. Maud Lavin and her collaborators show us how consumerism, crass or otherwise, is no longer the enemy (if indeed it ever was) of spiritual engagement. As Lavin herself points out in her introduction: "Holidays can remind people of what they feel they are entitled to but are lacking. And sometimes celebrants go about trying to find it -- spirituality or connectedness or presents or just plain sex. Consumerism, in standard and less conventional forms, is one avenue for the search."

5-0 out of 5 stars great holiday book
I love this book! It's full of so much information and fun and interesting details. My kids loved it and had so many questions. Great way to introduce new vocabulary and the pictures go beautifully with the information. I see why it would be good for older kids learning about these things in school, but my younger children were very interested in this book and loved learning more about this holiday. I strongly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Tradition
I have a new holiday tradition that has added meaning to my Christmas.Since its publication, I have read and reread Christmas Remembered by Ben Logan each Christmas season.Mr. Logan's memories of Christmas have brought me wisdom and changed the way in which I look at Christmas and life.Logan writes:"I know there is something in Christmas, fragile as the laughter of children, that wakens the sleeping goodness in us, making it easier to feel, show, and say "I love you."His recounting of Christmas as a youth growing up on a farm in Wisconsin brings a simple, poignant meaning to what Christmas is all about.Another recollection of Christmas in Italy during World War II brings the stark reality of life to view, but in a way that joins one culture to another. The telling of stories is a tradition Logan feels is very important in family and culture alike. He writes that it is his hope as a writer that you, the reader, bring yourself to his stories and make them a part of your own story. His hopes are fulfilled as no one can read this moving Christmas book without being changed in a very special way. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Earth is not our last home"
Good things come in small packages is very true with this little book. At under a hundred pages and able to fit in your palm this is the perfect companion to take anyplace, anytime, anywhere. I recommend finding this authoritve book that is filled with many delightful pictures. The color and historical black and white photographs are all excellent, worth the price of the book alone. Anyone interested in the Day of the Dead and how it is celebrated in Mexico should add this little gem to their collection. Colectors like myself, of calaveras will love the Posadas, sugar skulls, papier-mache and other decorative skulls included in the book. The color photographs are outstanding and verydifferent from the usual fair found in most books on this subject. Some of the historical photgraphs are of the rarely seen family portraits with children that have passed from this world. There is even a series of color postcards inside but it seems to be waste to pull them out. The text is minimal but highly informative complete with poems by Aztec kings and Sor Juana Inez De La Cruz honoring the dead. Several observers of the Mexican Day of the Dead are featuredmost notably Sergei Eisensteini's thoughts and reflections when he made "QueViva Mexico"! There is a scene in the movie depicting the Day of the Dead and Eisenstein's scribbled notes, a primitive story book written on stationary from his stay at the Hotel Regis in Mexico city is included. An excerpt from Octavio Paz's "Labyrinth of Solitude" rounds out a concise view of the Day of the Dead. All in all this is a fascinating look and read of the celebration of death celebrated in November that dates back to the pre-conquest time period. The author, Chloe Sawyer, has written numerous books on Mexico and Peru and has lectured throughtout the world and is a Fellow of the Royal Anthropoligical Institute.

4-0 out of 5 stars Like a lantern...
Chloe Sayer offers readers a journey through the Day of the Dead. Into the darkness she goes, illuminating the honoring of the dead with written tributes from poets and novelists, and artwork from Mexico's greatest artists and handicrafters. The living play a special role with the dead, honoring them each year for a few days to help energize their spirits. A compact, beautiful little book. ... Read more

A GREAT BOOK for a first time teacher! This thematic book has a wealth of information, arranged by significant school events and holidays, based on parts of a well developed school day. A good reminder what to include andwhat not to forget in developing and implementing a preschooler's day. Andthe little tips and time fillers are great for establishing and maintaininga personal catelogue "on the go", just like the preschoolers weserve. A must for your library. ... Read more
