Editorial Review

"Learning the game of power requires a certain way of looking at the world, a shifting of perspective," writes Robert Greene. Mastery of one's emotions and the arts of deception and indirection are, he goes on to assert, essential. The 48 laws outlined in this book "have a simple premise: certain actions always increase one's power ... while others decrease it and even ruin us."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nuclear Weapon for the Modern Warrior
This book is LOADED with wisdom. The lessons you will learn here can help you to take your life to the next level and then the level beyond that one.Study this book and its Laws, and do not be afraid or too timid to adopt their teachings into your everyday experiences -- they will help you to get ahead, to get what you want, and to reach your goals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific synopsis of the classic historical writings on power.
This book is a no holds barred open discussion of raw power, entertainingly presented. It took me a little while to get over the almost completely amoral tone of the book, but I eventually got the sense that the amoral tone is there for a purpose: to clue you in to the fact that people who practice power at this level can often be completely amoral themselves. In that sense, the book truly gives the reader a sense of the mindset of those who will do anything to stay in power. There is a sense as one reviewer pointed out, that the book could have been written without this amoral tone, but then one would miss out on the opportunity of being immersed in its sense of amorality, which is an education in itself.Experiencing the amorality is a wakeup call that offers insight into how some of the world's ills have come to pass, though you may find yourself wanting to shower afterward. After reading it, you will definitely be more aware of the laws being played out on the world stage, and you will begin to recognize people in government who seem to be using it as a playbook. Some laws are even applicable in personal relationships...a scary thought.
3-0 out of 5 stars Another product of the imagination
If you have wild dreams of pontifical success.Illusions of grandeur and great lusts for power, then this book may feed your ego.It may even make you feel real good about yourself.Knowing all these secrets of power. But alas, it is only a fantasy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deconstructing neoliberalism's peculiar definition of 'freedom'
"A Brief History of Neoliberalism" by David Harvey is a concise and razor-sharp deconstruction of the neoliberal movement. Mr. Harvey convincingly demonstrates that neoliberalism is an ideology that has been wielded to enshrine elite privilege at the expense of people and the environment. Assiduously researched and cogently argued, Mr. Harvey offers a jargon-free and readable text that helps readers gain a greater understanding about the political economy of our neoliberal world and what this might hold for us in the future.
5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful??? Yes, indeed...!!!
Some other reviews described this book as Masterful.., Outstanding!!...and I am just taking a minute to agree with them. This is a solid book. Full of facts and of a profound knowledge of recent history. It simply goes to the core. The neoliberal theory is nothing more than a disguise or a distractionfor taking control and relocate class domination. Why?? Not only for political, racial or financial reasons, but mainlybecause the availability of natural resources ( mainly oil) is going to reach sometime soon a critical point, and then we, the rest of the people, are going to be redundant by the billions...and if this is so, we can forget about financial or institutional solutions to the contradictions that exist within the system or about popular movements, NGOs or whatever other alternatives you could think of...the solutions or better still, the reactions of the dominant elites are going to be hard and applied by military means.... and I think that they are exploring this option in practical ways as you are reading this humble opinion...just follow the news..

5-0 out of 5 stars A Critical Look at the Post-Keynesian Era
The term neoliberalism is usually heard in the pejorative sense, often coming from Latin American leaders such as Hugo Chavez and Evo Morales. The term refers to an international economic policy that has been predominant in policy-making circles and university economics departments since the 1970's.The four faces on the cover of this book (Reagan, Deng, Pinochet, and Thatcher) are considered by David Harvey the primemovers of this economic philosophy.Reagnomics, Thatcherism, Deng's capitalism with Chinese characteristics, and Pinochet's free market policies marked the beginning of new era of global capitalism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Insightful
"Never Again" is a book that has been ignored by much of the so-called mainstream media, probably because it is not scandalous and takes positions they don't want to hear. AG Ashcroft was attacked by bitter Democrats during his hearings for the position and during his four years in office, but he's a strong man with a deep sense of right and wrong. His observations before, during and after 9/11 are another view of that horrendous day. The book is not entirely about 9/11 and other chapters are very informative and interesting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rise to vote, Sir
With all the books being published by former and current government officials it is refreshing to read a piece that does more to explain the recent historical situation than to blame others for how it came about.
1-0 out of 5 stars John Ascroft -'Never Again'
John Ashcroft has written a book detailing his job as attorney general for president George W. Bush's first term.

This is a great introduction to demographics. It provides a easy to read introduction. It is still a college textbook. The author integrates humor into the text, which certainly kept me reading. Infotrac was completely worthless. It was a password to a three-month trial of access to databases. I already have access to databases through other sources, school and the library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Real World
If you are looking for a spy novel or 007 thriller, this book is not for you! If you you interested in the truth about the world around you and the business as usual in our government, then read it!
2-0 out of 5 stars Rambling
I am motivated to write this review (my first) because the last chapter was so bad.I thought I may slept through parts, so I started to re-read it.No, I handn't slept, the chapter was disjointed from the rest of the book and itself.I couldn't finish re-reading it because, like the first time, I got tired of the rambling and griping. In this final chapter, the author missed the obvious. He was the problem and would have been forced to leave regardless of national and organizational leadership.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book
I could not put this book down. Robert Baer's life story in the CIA is compelling and fascinating. Its very eye opening in to the politics of the war on terror and how the politics and the bureaucracy is crippling the CIA and in turn, leaving America so incredibly vunerable to another terrorist attack. He is a straight shooter and a true patriot, and talks candidly about the current state of America's war on terror - and I gotta say, I don't feel safe. The government is clearly failing to protect America on every level and the incompetence of the government agencies charged with protecting America is staggering. However, Baer goes after both democrat and republican administrations equally, which is refreshing. I think it adds to his credibility.

Editorial Review

Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Robert "Buzz" Patterson was a military aide to President Clinton from May 1996 to May 1998 and one of five individuals entrusted with carrying the "nuclear football"—the bag containing the codes for launching nuclear weapons. This responsibility meant that he spent a considerable amount of time next to the president, giving him a unique perspective on the Clinton administration. Though he arrived at the job "filled with professional devotion and commitment to serve," he left believing that Clinton had "sown a whirlwind of destruction upon the integrity of our government, endangered our national security, and done enormous harm to the American military in which I served." 5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and timely
I've been staring at a copy of Thomas Friedman's 'From Beirut to Jerusalem' on my shelf for nearly a year now, meaning to read it but always drawn to something else. Finally, recent events demanded that I learn more and I finally pulled it down, dusted it off, and read it.I'm so glad I did, especially now.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pertinent Then and Pertinent Now
Not in the "must read " class, but a good informative personal account of Thomas Freidman, the New York Times middle east journalist. The book contains his observances of the factional fighting that took place in Beirut and the larger Lebanon, Israel conflict in the 1980s.Thebook has interesting observances of these complicated situations. This is a good book for the 21st century where it appears Lebanon is again descending into chaos, and Israel has once again tried the tactic of invading southern Lebanon.Freidman does a good job making a chaotic situation interesting while providing new insights.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for Citizens of the World at the Beginning of the 21st Century
I have not yet completed From Beirut to Jerusalem, but I have been fascinated by every word.Mr. Friedman's intellectual approach to the every-day life, religions and politics of the Middle East is written in an easily understandable, conversational manner. He asks questions, finds a range of answers from varied sources, and shares his conclusions in a non-judgmental way.Mr. Friedman's in-depth study of the interplay of religions and politics in the Middle East has clarified many questions I had and has validated some of my thoughts. I better understand what is happening in the Middle East and am rethinking my own political views on today's events. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Joy
I have always enjoyed Larry Miller's stand up, and now I am delighted to find his point of view in book form.I love his take on marriage and family (his wife is a hoot!) to the everyday nonsense that we all do.I feel this book is very relatable and smart -- even though there where times I didn't understand one of his many historical refrences, I still understood what he was saying.Mr. Miller is a terrific writer, who is not afraid to reveal all sides of his personality. If you want a good laugh, then get this book! You will not be dissapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh-outloud funny, but wait - it's great writing, too!
That Larry Miller is a crafty one all right. You think you're reading a book of comic essays but then it suddenly dawns on you: this is really good!Impressive! It's got my brain - and my heart - pumping. How'd he do that?
5-0 out of 5 stars This is not only delightful writing and fun reading, it is wonderfully funny!
I love Larry Miller.Ever since I heard his "Five Levels of Drinking" years ago, and his comment that woman is the most powerful magnet in the universe and all men are cheap metal, well, I knew we had found a mind that could tell the funny truth. This is not a simple thing. Most of what is passed off as comedy is just awful and obscene twaddle that gets laughs by punching the audience in the gut.The laughs are more explosive exhalations than expressions of delight and joy.Miller brings delight and joy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Partial recipe for resonant leadership
A good framework for Servant Leadership style. Authors drive the point home by hammering three concepts into reader's mind: mindfulness, hope, and compassion. However the book fall short on emphasizing the power of "serving others," which I believe is a vital ingredient for resonant leaders. Many useful real life examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars Important book!
I very much enjoyed Drs. Boyatzis and McKee initial offering with Daniel Goleman, "Primal Leadership", so I looked forward to learning more about resonnant leadership. I certainly wasn't disappointed. I very much appreciated the author's attention to citations and footnotes, indications of valid and solid research -- something that is becoming increasingly rare in these days of making-it-up-as-you-go writings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mindfullness, brilliant!...
Intesting book - mindfullness, benevolence, compassion, optimism and hope are behaviors that allow leaders to display the very best of their game. Ok, As many have pointed out the book doesn't address the problem of towers falling at near-terminal velocity all the way into their own footprint.
1-0 out of 5 stars Open your eyes people!!!
People....Please..Do you honestly think Popular Mechanics can set straight all that is wrong in the world?Who owns Popular Mechanics?Hearst Publications!Who is Hearst Publications?Do they have any connection to our government or any aspects of the government? Can they be COMPLETELY trusted to give factual, unbiased opinion? There are hundreds of unanswered questions regarding the events that took place on Sept. 11th. yet they think they can dispell them in one book?Let's look at just 2 issues shall we.First of all, World Trade 7.Sorry folks, buildings made of steel and reinforced concrete don't just fall down because a building nearby fell down.Fires or no fires this building absolutely just fell like the footings were just removed instantaneoulsy..Buildings that have been subjected to earthquakes and hurricanes see more violent shaking and yet at least some of the building remains intact if not compltetly intact. This building was demolished by explosive charges placed well in advance of Sept. 11th.Why?We may never know but it obviously was to hide something or to use the event to sway public opinion towards war.Secondly, crashed airplanes leave debris.LOTS OF DEBRIS!!!The crash at the pentagon left no signs of a crashed BOEING 757!First of all, have any of you ever seen a Boeing 757 besides in photos???They are a huge, heavy, loaded with flammable jet-fuel, aircraft. You don't crash a jet of that size anywhere without leaving debris. The hole in the side of the pentagon is NOT big enough to be caused by a Boeing 757 and that is the simple truth!A person could drive themselves crazy with all the information out there but the simple fact remains..NO WRECKAGE..NO PLANE and buildings don't just fall by themselves..I am a republican and I voted for BUSH but this whole situation stinks of a government cover up!Does Bush know anything?Doubtful.I've come to realize the man is a complete idiot.Probably why he was elected in the first place. The people in high places needed a patsy and they found him.You gotta love it!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Barry AuH2O political perspectives
While written over four decades ago, this book is still topical today, and not surprisingly so. For anyone interested in politics, it is a necessary read. In all honesty, any liberal should read this book to get an understanding of the conservative mindset. While, I, as a conservative, disagree on a few points with Goldwater, I still found the book enlightening and a worthwhile read. It strenghtened my own arguments and my own conservatism. The same will be the case for a liberal who reads this book. It's true what they say: keep your friends close and your enemies closer. If you are in any way interested in politics, you owe to yourself to give this book a read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bedrock of Conservative Government
At just over 100 pages, this brisk handbook for Conservative political thought impressed me by its constant recourse to the sanctity of the US Constitution, and by its thorough enumeration of the ways in which the federal government has trespassed into areas forbidden it by that same founding document. It is clear that these repeated violations of the Constitution, carried out by both Democrats and Republicans (as Goldwater assiduously points out), have spoiled the Senator's good mood.Yet Goldwater has written here a gentleman's treatise. There is no partisan venom, just good, clean, political argumentation from a man who feared, in 1960, that decades of growth in federal power had taken the nation down the wrong path in several areas of public policy, and that this same growth in government was already strangulating individual freedom and sapping the souls of those dependent on government welfare.
