5-0 out of 5 stars Terrifying
A bleak forecast for Western Civilization's future.Scarier than any horror novel I've ever read, despite the fact that, at times, Steyn made me guffaw with his witticisms.Certainly not for the faint-hearted among us.

5-0 out of 5 stars What will happen to Mont St. Michel and Chartres?
I don't give a d*mn for the French people or any of the European peoples any more since (as Mark Steyn clearly and forcefully points out) they are digging their own demographic graves (while happily damning America and appeasing the jihadists). But I do care for European THINGS, foremost among them great monuments to the human spirit such as Mont St. Michel and Chartres. When Europe becomes Islamic later this century, what will the Muslim rulers do to these cathedrals? Turn them into mosques, as the Ottomans did to St. Sophia when they conquered Constantinople, or turn them into museums, as the Turks later did to St. Sophia, or blow them up, as the Taliban did to the Buddhas?
5-0 out of 5 stars You won't want to put it down. ( I mean that.)
"America Alone" is an electrifying, compelling read, and Steyn's take on the state of affairs in America and Europe is frighteningly dead on. I read the first half on the way to Thailand, and hated putting it down. Buy it, read it and give it to those you care about. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Megachurch Movement Gains Stature--Maybe
Chapter 3 on religion (mostly megachurches) is worth the price of the book. The authors call it the third side of their triangle, and perhaps the best "example of how to appeal to anxious Americans in this era of change."A sidebar, "Selling Coffee and God," describes a Vienna, Va., in-church Starbucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars We Want More!
In his adroitly served "Enough", Juan Williams meticulously defends the honor and polishes the tarnished star of Sir William Cosby. While retorting to the haters of individual responsibility, Mr. Williams offers real solutions (not just talk), to the plague that has infected multitudes of African Americans, who live on both sides of the tracks! His intricate weaving of history, politics, and culture qualifies his work as required reading for all with any trace of African ancestry. As a matter of fact, it would be good reading for anyone with any dealings with African Americans, which leaves out no one.

3-0 out of 5 stars I really really wanted to write a good review...
I first heard of this book on a radio show and was very impressed with Williams' take on black leadership in America.I was shocked to hear these words coming from Juan Williams, who is the token liberal (whoever thought that "token" and "liberal" would ever go together?) on FOX News.I began reading the book thinking that I would be as impressed with the ideas expressed by Williams as much as I was will Bill Cosby's 2004 speech.I was disappointed for two major reasons:
4-0 out of 5 stars Only Half the Job is Done
Juan Williams gets an "A" for effort, but this book does not go far enough. It is part of the dishonest black circular firing squad started by Cosby, where blame is readily meted out when the cause is black men, but the punches are carefully pulled when the cause seems attributable elsewhere, perhaps, god forbid, even to irresponsible black women.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great leaders inspire others to lead
This book does a great job of focusing on Lincoln's leadership traits without get sidetracked on other aspects of Lincoln's life and times. This focus on leadership traits, combined with the relative short length of the book (about 170 pages) and the author's compelling writing style, make it a quick and delightful read.
5-0 out of 5 stars A New Appreciation for Lincoln
After reading this book, I have developed an entirely new appreciation for Abraham Lincoln. While always believing him to be one of the greatest leaders of the country, I never really grasped why he was a great leader until now.Phillips does a superb job here of gleaning Lincoln's leadership principles from the many details available regarding the 16th president's life.
4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting and helpful read!
Before my review, let's have a quick reference of it per chapters/principles delivered by the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scary and sad
I bought this book because I do not want to hate Bush. As a recovering member of AA, I wanted to know more about him, because I doubt he has ever set foot into an AA meeting. If he had done so and truly grasped the concepts, he would not be doing the things he does.
1-0 out of 5 stars Justin Frank on the Couch
Well, first off, I have to admit to not having read the book, but I heard this nitwit on The Randi Rhodes Show this afternoon, and within about a minute I nearly lost control of the car I was laughing so hard.Something about the young G.W. Bush getting off torturing small animals and shoving hot pieces of steel up their rectums. But he's a famous doctor - who am I to question his diagnoses?
5-0 out of 5 stars Serious Work
This is not just your usual Bush bash - it is a serious work by a well respected professional. If you find The Toxic Texan's thoughts and actions inexplicable and want to make some sense of it all, read this book. This is probably the best book I have read on why/how this man operates. It explains why Bush cannot speak when talking about subjects requiring understanding or compassion - but he never gets it wrong when he's talkin' tough.

4-0 out of 5 stars Partial recipe for resonant leadership
A good framework for Servant Leadership style. Authors drive the point home by hammering three concepts into reader's mind: mindfulness, hope, and compassion. However the book fall short on emphasizing the power of "serving others," which I believe is a vital ingredient for resonant leaders. Many useful real life examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars Important book!
I very much enjoyed Drs. Boyatzis and McKee initial offering with Daniel Goleman, "Primal Leadership", so I looked forward to learning more about resonnant leadership. I certainly wasn't disappointed. I very much appreciated the author's attention to citations and footnotes, indications of valid and solid research -- something that is becoming increasingly rare in these days of making-it-up-as-you-go writings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mindfullness, brilliant!...
Intesting book - mindfullness, benevolence, compassion, optimism and hope are behaviors that allow leaders to display the very best of their game. If you are one individuals who aspire to be a SUPERB leader who helps, inspires and drives results, this book will certainly be a roadmoap to get there... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tough Subject Clearly Explained
I'm a Junior at a large university, and this book is required for my Research Methods class.I've put off taking this class until now, since I'm not very math-oriented.This book explains research ideas in a very simple way, and each chapter has lots of examples from politics. My professor sometimes also has us read the sample articles that the chapters list. This is extra work, but seeing how real researchers use a method helps me understand it.By the way, there is math in the statistics section, but it's not really that bad.If you're not a natural whiz at research, this is the book for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your gray matter!
This book talks down to the student. It is elementary to the extent of being obvious. The field has moved on and so should we. Get the King, Keohane and Verba book instead, which is written lucidly and actually isnpires thought.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid and Accessible Textbook on Methodology
The book is clearly written, and I am using it this semester for an undergraduate class I teach. I am not a big fan of textbooks in general, as I rarely use them myself, and when I do, it is mostly for concrete and breif reference purposes. This book is very accessible. I especially liked the chapter on focus groups. The chapter on content analysis is also good, because it conveys very clearly the problems that one faces with this particular method, but at the same time the chapter is not mathematically deep. I find that most of my studnets find this book easy to use. As a book on statistics, it is not very powerful, and the presentation of even the basic methods could use better organization. But overall, this is still a useful text. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated junk.
This book was relevant at the time it came out, if nothing for the fact it helped pump the patriotism and zeal to go to war.
2-0 out of 5 stars A tame book that adds nothing of value
I work for a book summary company. One of the books selected for summary is this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Like Being a Fly on the Wall in the White House
Bush at War was the first book that I have read by Bob Woodward. Of course, I am somewhat familiar with Woodward's work and his reputation as one of the greatest living journalists. But, "current events" is not a subject that I normally look for when choosing literature. The idea behind Bush at War intrigued me though. Here we have a presidential administration obviously very fond of secrecy, but they are also willing to grant extensive interviews to Woodward -- one of the reporters that exposed the covert goings-on of another secretive White House. My curiosity was peaked.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of A Kind.
Steve Sample is a very unusual University President.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must for college and university planners
The literature on leadership is a little like outer space: vast and mostly empty. This little book is one of the brighter stars. Begin reading Chapter 11, the Case Study. Sample's record of achievement in this chapter will open your mind and heart to principles that are eloquently argued in the rest of the book. While the principles apply to all types of organizations, academic insitutions will get the most from them. Every research university in America can benefit from Sample's experience, wisdom, and exemplary leadership.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Insignts
What do you think it would take to be a great leader is the challenge that Steven Sample's tasks our most inventive critical thinking skills. He says leadership can be taught and learned and that it is a study that is open to investigation and change. He challenges us to be an intellectual and independent thinker.

4-0 out of 5 stars REALLY GOOD ROLE MODEL, CHALLENGES HISTORY, MAKES YOU RETHINK AND ANALYZE WHAT LEADERSHIP IS
Leadership is neither a good or bad moral obligation. It is an attitude and action. The Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius said that, if you flinch at the idea that you will hurt somebody, you yourself are already dead. Morality cannot sustain mortality, it inevitable that the idea of your own death, takes precedence over the emotion of war and murder.

1-0 out of 5 stars Laura can have an opinion - Entertainers can't!
Ingraham is an elite herself. Her opinion is valid, why?Because she is not a entertainer?Does she mention that the 'great' Ronald Reagan was an entertainer? So you can be an entertainer with a legitimate view, but you should have the same view as Laura!Subverting America?Doesn't every American have the right to speak, the duty to speak, their mind?I'd tell Laura to shut up and write, but that wouldn't be polite now would it?Of course being polite/charitable isn't a concern of the right wing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid Republican conservatism
Ingraham rails against elitism in six separate areas: politics, media, arts andentertainment, ivory tower (academia), business, and international organizations. For the most part, she makes her points with solid references, especially to the liberal Hollywood actors and actresses who seem to think that because we pay to watch them play dress-up, they are entitled to tell us who to vote for. It's a relevant and eye-opening book about the state of America today and why changes need to be made.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid conservative writing
Shut Up and Sing by Laura Ingraham is an insightful look into not only the liberal elite but how conservatives view them.Ingraham's book is similar to Ann Coulter's Slander and Women Who Make the World Worse by Kate O'Beirne, but better in that she explains things with so much more detail. It does seem that the same stories about unhinged liberals seem to circulate from book to book.I've read the same crazy stories in all three of these books, plus a few that were in Michael Savage's The Enemy Within.I would have to place this book near the top of the heap of this kind of writing.Ingraham doesn't engage in name-calling and backs up her writing with lots of source material. Her voice in writing is straight-forward without the histrionics that make up so much conservative writing. My one complaint is that she seems to see Communism everywhere.Maybe I'm naive, but I thought that The Red Scare was over. Not according to Ingraham, and she doesn't come off as a quack, she's got the sources to back herself up.Scary reading. ... Having never really questioned the official account of 9/11 until recently (this fifth anniversary seems to generate a bit more buzz than usual) I was only curious to read what one of the most prominent 9/11 "alternative analysts" had to say. Well, after reading this, I am not sure what to believe anymore, but I sure know what to NOT believe: any single word of the official account.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible history
Alter's book on FDR is an engrossing, meticulously researched history of FDR's early life and First Hundred Days, that somehow also manages to be, simply put, a good read.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to read
This is a non-profound book by an outstanding journalist which I enjoyed much. While FDR's inauguration on March 4, 1933, and the hundred days thereafter are the main topic of the book, the account of the run-up to that day is well told and full of interest to someone who cannot remember those times, even if one has read much on them since.I don't know that I had ever realized that his nomination was in jeopardy, but Alter states the if FDR had not been nominated on the 4th ballot he might well have not won the nomination at all, which, if true, I had not realized. As in most books like this one, there are a few errors I noticed, and I will set them out so they can be corrected in the next printing:1. On page 141, in discussing a thought about having Hoover and Curtis resign after appointing FDR Secreatry of State (so FDR could take over before March 4), Alter says the Speaker and the President pro tem of the Senate would also have had to resign in order for FDR to become President--but this is wrong because in 1933 the Secretary of State was next in line to be President after the Vice-President.The Speaker did not become next in line until the law was changed in 1945 or so.2.On page 295 and on another page Alter refers to a "bankruptcy judge" in Iowa who was maltreated in 1933 by irate farmers. That judge, C. C. Bradley, was not a "bankruptcy judge" but a district court judge, who had no jurisdiction in regard to bankruptcy.3.On page 316 there is a reference to "Senator Thomas P. Gore of Rhode Island."Thomas P. Gore was a blind Senator from Oklahoma, not Rhode Island.4.On page 317 there is a reference to "Bennett Clark of Pennsylvania."Bennett Clark was a Senator from Missouri, not Pennsylvania.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Defining Moment:FDR's Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope
Very interesting anecdotes from political history. The most interesting element of the book is how I related it to present day.For that reason, the lessons of the book proved motivational. As FDR overcame various issues to become one of the country's most popular and effective presidents. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic leadership text
Heifetz' definition of leadership revolves around the concept of influence rather than subordination or coercion.Using contrast to sharpen his own definition of leadership, he wrote that there is an important difference between imagining that a leader influences a community to follow her vision and influencing a community to face its problems.
