3-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Cultural Comparisons, Different Conclusions
I found this book very interesting reading as a means to discovering more about other cultures, how they raise their children, and why.For that reason alone, I would recommend this book.Ms. Small does go from there, however, to draw conclusions that in our culture we should look at these differences and re-think the way we raise our children from the fundamentals to the details, and I generally disagree with her perspective here. While I feel it is always good to 'think outside the box' about some things, we simply do not have the same lifestyle, needs, or concerns of primitive tribes, and so to compare child-rearing in such divergent cultures becomes too extreme for me.I agree with the reviewer who felt that Ms. Small seems, at times, impervious to the fact that we live in the world we live in.For various, generally legitimate, reasons, in our world it is not particularly wise for toddlers to be touching valuable products that could easily be broken. In other cultures, it might not matter since what is "valuable" in that society may be different. As someone on the cusp of receiving a grad degree in early childhood development and starting a child care business, as a mother of a pre-schooler, and most of all as a person living in western culture, I see strong reasons to acclimate our children to the world in which THEY will live - this often means "no touchy" as well as learning classroom rules and other lessons that will allow them to move seamlessly into OUR world.Early exposure to educational and cultural experiences may "over-schedule" them, but within reason establishes neural networks at a time when they are most ripe for learning and ingraining skills that will last a lifetime. This and other aspects of our Western view of child rearing, when in moderation, I believe are of benefit to our children unless they end up moving to Tanzania....She talks about one culture in which children instead learn to find trails and fetch water in their early years, but our children do not need these skills, so I find the comparison interesting but irrelevant. She does make excellent observations about how, even in our own culture, the standards for child rearing have changed even over the last few decades. As a constantly evolving species, I'm sure the next few decades will see changes as well, hopefully weeding out the things that didn't work for our children and keeping what did.

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs More Content
I hope Professor Small reads this. There were two self-described scenes in this book that portrayed the author as rude and condescending to the other adult in the scene. The first was Professor Small and her child in a Pediatric room with a nurse and the second was Professor Small and her child in an eyeglasses store with an eyeglasses salesman. In the first scene Professor Small laughed and acted haughty at the nurses slightly ignorant yet well intended question about how many words the toddler could speak and in the second Professor Small refused to intervene despite several requests from the salesman that she stop her toddler from playing with the eyeglasses that were on display. In both scenes Professor Small had good points to make that conflicted with the opinions of the other adults in the scenes, yet in both scenes I felt she behaved in a manner that demeaned the other adults.Beyond those two jarring scenes, I found this book a little light in content.I learned a few things in the chapters that reviewed the current state of knowledge on subjects like child growth and child language but then felt many chapters were meandering and repetitious on issues such as cultural comparisons of child raising. ... This book is incredibly comprehensive and thorough without being hard to read or dry.I was at first daunted by the lengthy nature of the book, but it is exceptionally well written and is very interesting to read. The editors are very successful in clearly and concisely reviewing and organizing thousands of research studies on child maltreatment and making the results understandable and relevant. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I recommend this book to anyone that deals with children.
I found it to be very well written and it contains timeless information for everyone.I am a big advocate of prevention and believe the information found on Page 102, "A Final Word" should be taken to heart by all, especially where it states "Arm yourself with every bit of knowledge available.Set boundaries for your child's activities and behaviors, and be involved in every aspect of their lives ... Protecting the children means protecting the greatest natural resource of any country.Children are the world's future."
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guidebook on Child Sexual Abuse
While no single book can ecompass EVERYTHING one needs to know about the critical issues of child sexual abuse, Claire Reeves does a fantastic job in her book, "Childhood, It Should Not Hurt!" Being a non-offending mother myself, six years ago I went searching the bookstores for books like these to no avail. I wish I had found this book then. Although difficult in retrospect to read some of the accounts with which I can so readily identify, I find this book to be an excellent guide for non-offending parents and survivors.
5-0 out of 5 stars ChildHood It Should Not Hurt! Crosses over as a text book for University's
ChildHood It Should Not Hurt! Is becoming widely accepted by both the mental health/Health Care field as well as Law enforcement. Including University's such as James Madison University using Child Hood It Should Not Hurt as a textbook in their Psychology department. As for the only negative Review ChildHood It Should Not Hurt has received posted by Dennis G. Ott of Longview, Washington.Mr. Ott neglects to say that he was the attorney representing a father accused of child sexual abuse, and Ms. Claire R. Reeves was the expert witness who testified on that case.Due to confidentiality no details are available but it suffices to say that the mother who was not accused of abuse retained the custody of the minor child.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important analysis of censorship "for children's sake"
This book is a responsible and important study of how we rationalize censorship policies to "protect" children. The interests at stake here are as obvious as they are important. The freedom of expression has long been considered the touchstone of individual liberty and, in turn, democracy. Legally, we have enacted many safeguards to protect this essential aspect of our society, and continue to give mouth service to its importance. But, even as we tout the importance of such personal freedoms, both overseas and on American soil, we are sadly failing in one critical respect:we are not instilling these values in our children.Instead, we are showing them that an authoritative regime may censor and punish unpopular or offensive speech in the name of safety and conformity. We lecture students over the values of the freedom of speech while allowing schools inappropriately broad latitude in declaring student behavior inappropriate or dangerous if it even references violent or sexual themes.Anything considered "sexual" in nature is censored from school life entirely, and even sexual education classes suffer in their ability to inform and protect students.
4-0 out of 5 stars Protectionism is Harmful to Minors
Though the scholarly discussions of legal cases were trying (pardon the pun) to get through, they were worth the effort. They helped to dramatize the incredible amounts of time, energy, and emotion misplaced in the "harm to minors" protectionism racket.Due to her civil libertarian background, I was surprised to see her frequent attempts to present (or at least understand) both sides.3-0 out of 5 stars Author Brought up Good Issues
My reading group chose this book, because we felt that there weren't many books out there that focused on the topic of censorship and the protection of children and innocence. But while she brings up many issues that shows censorship as troublesome, she addresses them in such a dry manner that it became harder to read as the book became more or a summary of all the court cases there have been regarding the issues. It would be a great book for a communication or law class, but for recreational reading, it was very difficult for us as readers to get to the end of the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New Children & Near-Death Experiences
This is a "must read" for anyone whose: had an NDE, knows of someone whose had an NDE, &/or anyone whose children seem to be smart beyond their years, as well as those who are just plain interested in this phenomenon and what it might mean...I also think that this book is essential for teachers - as it outlines how children change, in regards to education, after a NDE - and how you, the teacher, can help them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding The New Children & Their Special Gifts
THE NEW CHILDREN AND NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES provides an exceptionally thorough overview of the wide variety of near-death experiences (NDEs) for children and a fascinating description of how these experiences transform children's lives. Author PMH Atwater points out that while there are many types of near-death experiences, there is one identifiable pattern that fits them all... and this pattern sets the stage for great changes in the child's life. Atwater further explains how children born recently, the "new children," are demonstrating many of the same characteristics of children who have had NDEs. Many of these children view future events before they happen, learn at a very fast pace, are quick to recognize relationships, see ambiguity in what appears to be factual information, think abstractly, enjoy working independently, and don't want their giftedness pointed out. Today I heard Michael Dorn speak as part of our "beginning of the year" inservice.I am a second grade teacher and was profoundly affected by Michael's message. He has helped me remember the powerful influence and presence I have in my students' lives. As a parent, his message has helped me question and be very connected in my own kids' lives and education. He is an excellent speaker and writer.I highly recommend this book to all people who influence children in any way.It is an eye-opener and a wonderful reminder of how precious and beautiful our children are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Youth Gangs
This book is by far one of the most innovative and insightful books that I have read in some time. They also challenge the more common images that gangs represent as well. I found myself questioning the basic reasons for there are gangs in America, and found myself finding a whole new perspectie as these people view their dscieion to be in a gang as an economic choice of survival, not that of one they get into because they have a choice.5-0 out of 5 stars Youth Gangs
I found this to be one of the most informative books about understanding the gang concept in America. Howerver, it also helpedme to debunk the same myths about gang and agang structure as well.
