Powerful Book!Highly Recommend it.
I read this book in one setting.I couldn't put it down.Mrs. Twenge is a brave woman.She writes with such clarity on thestate of Generation Me, of which I belong to.She goes to great lengths to document the differences between our generation and the generations before us.A must-read!

challenging theme, bad writing
For those who feel the dramatic difference between the 1950-1960 generation, and that of 1970-1980,and are troubled by it, this book is the answer. It compiles all the possible reasons - psychological and sociological, explaining why the young are what they are and behave these days. The facts and figures cited are interestingand convincing.
I thought it was going to be good....but....
I was very excited to read this book after perusing all of the positive reviews on Amazon and other sites.As I began the book, it did not disappoint.The author seemed to have a real insight into generational differences, and had fantastic research to back up many of her points.

A Snapshot in Time
If I would have read this book when it came out in 2000, I probably would have been completely blown away by it.As it is, in 2006, it is still a pretty good read.
Can you guess what generation the author's kids are
No doubt the 4th turning was a refreshing revelation.And the more dated predecessor Generations was a great secondary read.From that I gathered there was a sort of synergistic relationship with each skipped generation.Boomers relating to GI generation and Silent relating to the 13th generation, simply stated, a reciprocating bond of grandparents and their grandchildren.Parents sure didn't like the antics and conduct of their children but they sure love those amazing grandchildren .So it all makes sense that we get this tertiary and purely subjective read from Howe about what essentially are his darling grandchildren.
Poor Book
I read the Millenials Rising book and I have to say that I found that a lot of the things that were said in this book to be very dated and, for the most part, not revelant to today's teenagers and young adults. One thing that I've noted is that a lot of things have happened since the publication of this book, 9/11, the war in Iraq, etc. and it doesn't jibe with me that the authors stated that the entertainment the Millenials enjoy are "squeaky clean" which doesn't explain the popualrtiy of subsequent shows such as "Chappelle's Show", or "Boondocks" both of which are highly controversial.

War agaisnt the weak, proves that we are no longer weak
Edwin Black writes books, that not only move you emotionally, but educate you with page turning energy. This is a book that will not only scare you and tell you about the horrors of what mankind can think of but how this type of horror can become "commonplace" in a society that goes mad. This book is relevant today as never before, as we are facing a crisis of war against the "infidels", which in its own wayis a war against the weak, or the politically correct who refuse to acknowlege that we are fighting a war of terror, under the guise of religion, and one party choosing who lives and who dies. This book is well researched, documented, and filled with facts. Bravo to Edwin Black. Now if only the State department could reead this.................

History as Pop Culture
"War Against the Weak" takes American history as a facet of pop culture. While factually based, Black undermines the historical importance of eugenics and the debate. Black, a journalist by nature, is not a historian and his book should not be taken as a solely historical text. While he does cite his evidence, Black only touches the surface of Eugenic history. Ultimately, "War Against the Weak" was written for popular reading and is an adequate basis for those with no knowledge on the subject

Horrible history - important book
Black is researched and sourced to the point his index requires its own hardcover publication. His book is somewhere between straight reporting and a cry for justice, but Black is no drama queen. This is a well documented, studiously researched and well-written journal of how American eugenics gave nod to mass murder in Europe. Black is nothing if not deliberate in his sourcing and is as learned on the subject of eugenics as anyone. Well worth the time. ... Read more

Go buy a copy
This new edition of a standard reference is most welcome and long overdue.Generally sound and providing the high quality expected, with several new topics covered very well. Special mention should be made of the very useful additional material on health issues. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the chapter on race and ethnicity which is already well out of date, focuses on US material on race and provides very little by way of useful or factual information on ethnicity. The information about international practices seriously thin and is badly flawed, despite some valuable comments which seem to have sneaked in.Why on earth for such a central reference work did the editorial board not find an ethnicist to co-author this chapter at the very least - this chapter is a sad and jumbled disappointment with little understanding of the topic and it misses entirely key issues and concepts such as ethnic mobility and the role of paternity effects. A quick look through the reference list for the chapter reveals the source of this lack of depth and lack of discussion of key issues - the primary research is nowhere to be seen and it depends far too heavily and uncritically on official US census publications.The appendix on GIS is welcome but is already also starting to date, as would be expected for such a fast moving area. Despite these short-comings, still a most welcome book and tremendous value for the price.Well bound and well printed, and the editors need to be complimented on a very high quality publication.

Way too hard for the third grade!
My teacher used this book in third grade science.It was way too hard!This book might be good for grown-up people in college, but please... it's too hard for the third grade.

A new version of the "Bible" of Demography
I remember the early days where I used to go through the old book "The Methods and Materials of Demography" while studying at the Cairo Demographic Center in the early 90s of last century. The Government and Politics of the Middle East and North Afr
I am writing in response to the one review by a reader from Staten Island. As I have read the previous editions of this book and several books by these authors I'm a bit upset with the review that is displayed... Especially since it is a review for the WRONG BOOK. Azzie Layachi which the reviewer cites as being "absent minded" IS NOT one of the authors of this book. Please take care to make sure reviews are correct and correspond to the book that is actually in review. Such negligence gives wrongful insight to others looking to purchase this book. Both Reich and Long are well know for their expertise, and their books have long been used in academia. For others to see a one star review due to the carelessness of one reader is unfortunate and unacceptable. (please note the four star review is from reading the previous editions- I have not yet read this one but it was on route to purchasing that I stumbled upon said incorrect review.)

Layachi is at is again!
This book is an updated version of a previously released book which I already rated as completely awful. I totaly dislike thsi book for many reasons, I feel Layachi is trying to push an agenda through thsi book. It is dry and boring, It serves no other use that to be used to hold a door in St. John's University Hallway open. Brought to you from the absent minded professor Azzie Layachi, a man that can't teach Poli Sci to say the least, but publishes books that are better used for toliet paper. Like in the previous editions he rambles for chapters about north Africa and how the US is treating it, well Mr. Layachi ask yourself what can I do to improve my books (and teaching) instead of lashing out with your anti-US sentiment. Case Unproven
The great merit of this somber book is that it matter-of-factly includes the Armenian genocide along with the Holocaust as the two most important case studies that Mann examines.The two cases are linked by more than Hitler's infamous remark just before launching Operation Barbarossa "Who now speaks of the annihilation of the Armenians?"The Turkish genocide of the Armenians was also perpetuated by the leadership of a modernizing State, in the context of war, using its organizational and administrative resources to their fullest capacities in an attempt to murder as many members of an entire people as possible.For some reason, it does not sit well with many Holocaust scholars to refer to the tragic pioneering suffering of the Armenians at the hands of the Turks and their allies as genocide, but that was what it was.Mann acknowledges the similarities between the Armenian and Jewish experiences in this book, although he does not demonstrate particular insight into the events that produced the Armenian genocide.Nevertheless, in the prevailing climate of intellectual opinion, which forbids scholarly reference to the mass murders of the Armenians as a genocide, Mann's book constitutes a long step in the right direction.
Fair book, interesting thesis, but read his "Fascists" first
I liked this book, and found it to be a nice companion piece to Mann's book on fascists. In fact, I would say these two books are really best seen as two volumes of a single work on the forces that create and sustain organic nationalism, and then propel it down the path of ethnic cleansing and genocide. Is this specific work and the larger treatise on organic nationalism flawed? Yes, of course, every scholarly work is inherently flawed and incomplete -- experts on genocide will no doubt nit-pick his details here. But taken together Mann presents two works that are fairly compelling.
Comes Up Short
Ethnic cleansing has been practiced by signers of the Atlantic Charter in the past and continues to be practiced by emerging democracies of today.A book addressing this issue is a welcome addition to the literature of the evolving history of human rights.Thus it is with great anticipation that I turned to the "Dark Side of Democracy". Unfortunately, the book falls awfully short of its promise.Its title is misleading and it contains a large number of misstatements of facts and factual errors and omissions.

Good book about genocide, bad book about individual genocides
If you are interested in the study of genocide and theories of how a genocidal regime may rationalize its policies, then this book is a good choice for you. It's chock full of scholarly articles on theories concerning these matters, as well as how genocide should be defined, and other such intellectual material. If you're more interested in learning the details of individual genocides: how they were carried out, in-depth histories and case studies, then this is book will provide nothing for you to sink your teeth into. The articles within it frequently reference statistics from actual genocides and compare various aspects of different genocidal regimes, but never make any attempt to go beneath the surface. You'll learn nothing new from this book about any genocide that you couldn't have learned from just doing a Google search. Even the articles that are about specific events, like the killings in Guatemala, are mostly just full of heady social theory with statistics and facts concerning Guatemala as a backdrop. They never go into the specifics of how the killings were carried out, or specific incidents, or anything that might breathe just a little bit of life and humanity into the stuffy academic monologue. You may want to read this book if you're preparing to write a research paper on genocide, but it's definitely not something most people would read for pleasure. ... Read more
