Name one civilization that lasted forever. Does anyone sincerely believe that we would be better off today if the mighty Roman empire had not perished? Change is inevitable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Research, Poor Recommendations
I enjoy reading Pat's books for their historical and factual research. But I have found that he fails to make his point when it comes to the conclusions and recommendations to fix the problems he outlines. This book is no exception.Great research, interesting, but it need a hard punch line conclusion at the end with specific, easy to follow recommendations.A specific chapter at the end with numbered recommendations listing exactly what can/should be done to stem the flow of immigration would make this a more powerful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative but casts too wide a net.
Bruce Bawer's book is informative and covers quite a lot of ground in its description of the insidious nature of radical Islam in Europe and how the political elite are more enamoured with political power over a propagandised electorate instead of applying themselves to the defence of freedom. But that is what European style government is all about despite the contemporary terrorism of radical Islam, and is--like democracy--the antithesis of freedom.
5-0 out of 5 stars While Europe Slept: How Radical Islam is Destroying the West
Hardly a more timely subject can be found.Perhaps long overdue, if you want to educate and inform yourself about what is really going on behind the press headlines, you owe it to yourself to read this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, but exaggerates Europe's fate
Having lived in Europe for a few years, I can safely say that the extreme liberal PC policies of "Sure! Anyone can live here!" mentality towards immigration have lead to a dangerously large anti-European Muslim population. This will be a large issue for the continent in the current century, but is Europe going to become part of a monstrous Islamic Calliphate? Highly doubtful

4-0 out of 5 stars depressing book
I got this for my dad to read. I talked to him about a month after I gave it to him and he told me that he was only 50% through it. When I asked why, he said he could only read 3-4 pages at a time because it got him so depressed reading about the destrction of our country. I guess that is why 'reality bites.' Most certainly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Wake Up Call
There is no doubt that illegal immigration is destroying this country for a number of reason, not the least of which is the utter refusal of millions of people to bother learning English. But this book focuses on much more than just language and shows us how so much of what is wrong with the country is a direct result of what comes through its borders. These include drugs, diseases and terrorists as well as lifestyles, cultures and mindsets that are antithetical to freedom, capitalism and democracy just to name a few.
5-0 out of 5 stars If You Love Your Country--Read this Book
I believe that Tom Tancredo is probably only one of a handful of U.S. congressmen left who are truly upholding the U.S. Constitution. In his book, he outlines all of the many threats that are coming at us through our porous borders:Gangs, drugs, lower wages, drain on social services, diseases (such as leprosy) and the degeneration and disintegration of the American culture (especially here in the South--Dixie).The only thing that he leaves out is the advent of the North American Union as the cause for Washington's lack of interest in securing our borders. This could be, because at the time that this book was written, he was not aware of it.I only became aware of the NAU a few months ago. Also, I read a lot of posts on this review board criticizing the fact that Mr. Tancredo used a photograph of a battered, mutilated American flag.I take no offense to this. The picture is merely a representation and symbolic of the way that America's culture, social fabric and heritage is becoming mutilated and battered by illegal hordes. When armies go to war and carry their flags, they often become ripped and battered and even a little burned, but this in no way diminishes their worth or what they stand for.Thank you for reading this review. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT STORY!
Enrique has always known life to be absent of his mother's presence. Having left him at just 5 years old, his mother embarks on the dangerous, and sometimes life ending journey, to begin a new life. A journey to the United States of America. Broken promises to return home slip by one after another as Enrique realizes that there is only one way to reach her. Take the journey himself.
4-0 out of 5 stars About to be HBO TV Series based on Pulitzer newspaper seroes
This is written by a LA TIMES reporter who writes 'projects' -- born in Argentina and raised in Kansas to educated parents, the author is a good point person to look at this subject of illegal immigration and migrant children who risk life and limb to be reunited with their families. It is based on a Pulitzer prize winning newspaper article series...the books get off to a slightly slow start as the author admits to the reader she wasn't sure how to even write the book/series and how much she was going to get involved personally...she ended up actually taking the same route that her focus Enrique (a 17 year old Honduran boy) does in his quest to find his mother in North Carolina who came to the US more than a decade ago as a illegal. The book takes you along the amazing journey on the top of freight cars and trains from Honduras to Mexico to Laredo Texas and Enrique's 8 attempts to get to the USA....What's so surprising is that Enrique is depicted just as he is -- no angel-- a glue sniffing teen who smokes marijuana and isn't an especially hard worker...but who is determined to make it to the USA to see his mother again....the best part of the book is probably when the author talks about her own re-enactment of Enrique's journey and how she traced the facts in the book-- I'm impressed as a journalist with the whole section that answers how does she know what Enrique and others around him, family, friends, girlfriend are telling the truth...how does she know the stats on migrant children who come by theirselves illegally to the USA...She admits there is an O'Henry type ending to the story (spoiler here) -- where Enrique once united with his mother is not HAPPY with the reunion and finds his quest to find out why she left him is futile...not surprising he represents some 30,000 plus kids who face the same situation-- and many of which wish they could live with their parents/moms back in their homeland versus getting the gifts of Barbie Dolls and Starwars characters and clothes their parents sent to them from the US ...it's a constant circle of challenges...and basically involves a sociological shift in our worldwide society where as much as 1/4 of the GNP of some 3rd world countries like Honduras comes from remittances from illegals who live in the USA or immigrants who have obtained citizenship. My concern was that there was little emphasis on getting citizenship legally..there was lots of talk about scams to get relatives over to the USA and about how these migrants live in the USA -- many spending excessively on alcohol or drugs or luxuries--even sending $400 back to their homeland for a kid's birthday...and the beat goes on -- there seems to be no solution to this challenge -- amnesty is what the moms seem to want...but how that will help them with jobs is a big question...since they are uneducated and unskilled in most cases. In fact WEST magazine has a similar story this week...in the LA TIMES....maybe it falls to churches to help solve this-- like in some of the cities in Mexico where they have built migrant housing etc...and classes in how to survive in the USA without getting ripped out...yes, we can say tighten the borders, build the fences but it sounds like they will still come...especially in cities like LA and Miami -- where Hispanics are beginning to outnumber caucasians...maybe a better underground railroad....I'd love to see what the author has to say about potential solutions but that is not this book....eye-opening but warning it may make you angry....I'd love to know where their money is going -- it says that Enrique is spending $600 month for a used truck and insurance in North Carolina...how about an old beat up car...how about a city bus? He pays his mom $200 a week for lunch and dinner when he visits her daily. $200 for a 17 year old boy's lunch and dinner-- 1 person...hmm I spend $50 a week on food MAX....something's wrong here...$800 per month must be enuf to feed a family of 4 comfortably...some stuff just doesn't add up and you want to knock on the author's door and say -- what's up here...so it's VERY FRUSTRATING...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Devils Highway
Not being a avid reader ,if a book doesn't interest me in the first few pages I put it away. This certainly was not such a book. Written by a Mexican American I expected the story to be slanted toward anti immigration only to find a balanced view of the Border situation from the prospective of those desperate to make a better life for their familys, to the Border Patrol and the almost impossible job before them. Two things that stand out are the compassion of the Border Patrol and how the immigrants are so often preyed upon by their own people. A must read before making a judgement about our border situation and the people who live {and die} there.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misplaced Sympathy for an Invading Army
It seems like this book has appeal for the come one, come all immigration proponents and multiculturalism fanatics.I take no joy in hearing the stories of human suffering, whether it be south of the border or elsewhere, but there is a heavy cost for allowing millions of mexicans into America. Many locales with large illegal immigrant populations have seen a sharp increase in violent crime and gang activity.
5-0 out of 5 stars He may as well have been...
Jonathan Miles of MEN'S JOURNAL wrote this of Urrea's sublime tribute to the immigrant's journey, "A tour de force account of an adventure unlike the ones you're used to reading."And it's true. What makes THE DEVIL'S HIGHWAY shine is Urrea's ability to lend his novelist's eye to a story more true than most of us would like to imagine. For whatever side you hold in the Border debate, Urrea will make you believe in the people who walk. Even if he doesn't pull you toward empathy for those taking this journey, he will at least illuminate for you what happens to a group of men who feel like crossing the infamous Devil's Highway is the only option. From their first step into the desert to their rescue just short of the U.S. border, you will not want to put this book down.Urrea takes the magnifying glass that is the Border Control Issue and focuses that hot sun down to a small group later called the Wellton 26.Literally. Every step through this Pulitzer Prized Finalist will force you onto the desert with these men : walking with these men, following with these men, thirsting with these men, and dying with these men. Urrea has made me want to keep going.Luckily, in the rear of the book, he's given me more with suggested readings to further my lusty desire to ingest all I can about this issue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'TIS A GRAND BOOK, !
Poignant, intense, exciting, gutwrenching yet heart warming are the scenes, actions and memories described inthis continuation of an indepth look at the the trials, tribulations and successes of FrankMc Court and his family. As you read it,you "are there" in New York, in Ireland, -at Mam's almost reunion with Frank's father, - in the army with Frank in Europe, - in church,- in the boarding house which provided meager temporary shelter, - in the countless dull mind-numbing jobs he had beforebecoming a teacher,- in the classroom trying to inspire lethargicstudents. With wit, and a lot ofmischievious charm, author Mc Court escorts us through his romantic liasons, marriage and birth of his daughter, -his brothers arrival and existence in New York,- his own "coming of age in America" as he matures, -and the death of his beloved mother, Angela, (Mam).
4-0 out of 5 stars THE CONTINUING MEMOIR, BY THE AUTHOR OF ANGELA'S ASHES
Frank McCourt has a flowing, gifted writing style that is all his own. This, the second in his memoirs, tells the chapter of his life where he leaves Ireland for a life in America. How one can endure his hardships and still keep a witty sense of humour is nothing short of amazing.Low paying jobs, racial criticism, and scorn await McCourt upon his arrival.
3-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing but with a few gems
I felt that he was trying to gain sympathy for his situation unlike the frankness of Angelas Ashes. I was dissapointed with this sequal. He was brave to tell the truth of his situation, however he must have cringed upon reflection of his early life. He does use humor throughout the book and that makes it more bearable to read. I felt like slapping him rather than giving him a hug at the end of this second book. He does tell the truth, to his credit, and doesn't candy coat anything, a continuation of the first book in the context of style. Would recommend this to an older audience, because of the content matter. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The Muddle of Everywhere
For those who still believe that the forced (We voted on this WHEN?) conversion of the America into a "multicultural," ever-less-European caldron of aggravated grievances and simmering sensibilities remains limited to places like Los Angeles and New York, they should read clinical psychologist Mary Pipher's glowing account of the "transformation" of Lincoln, Nebraska. Lincoln is Pipher's hometown, one of the quiet American towns targeted by the U.S Office of Refugee Resettlement as a "preferred community for newly arrived refugees."
2-0 out of 5 stars The Plight of Refugees in a magnificent piece
The convergence of a fascinating and easy to follow narrative with a serious discussion of a theme of world proportions is seldom found in literature. Best seller author Mary Phipher met the challenge of writing with from the perspective of a health professional and a human being who exhibits compassion for a "people group," the refugee population.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Would you die to enter another country?
Would you die to enter another country? THE REAPER'S LINE: LIFE AND DEATH ON THE MEXICAN BORDER comes from a U.S. Customs special agent who has spent some thirty years on the U.S.-Mexico border as a federal agent. His account of corruption, mass murder, gunfights and dangerous liaisons and interactions makes for a charged story of drug wars, illegal aliens and danger.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Reaper's Line
An eye-opening first hand account of life on the border and the never ending "War on Drugs." Mr. Morgan holds no punches as he paints a picture of corruption and ineptitude within the ranks of our own government agencies. His passion for justice and commitment to uphold the law of the land evokes a sense of pride and hope that each agent's commitment will not be undermined by the American bueruecratic system.

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY - The Truth
Having lived with the problems of a border community for years, it is refreshing to see the problem brought to light, removed from the shadows of politics and media hype. This story clearly shows how certain governmental agencies are playing "games" with number and budgets with little or no concern for the impact on the citizen. The citizens of both country are caught in the crossfire.Read the book -- It is outstanding! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars MINUTEMENTO PREVAIL OVER ELECTED PUBLIC SERVANTS
Gilchrist's and Corsi's, "Minute Men" reveals how some of America's elected servants, advocating a legal "pathway to citizenship for guest workers", are insidiously trying to legalize dangerous illegal immigration. It was exactly for this kind of tyrannical behavior, that the Founding Fathers sanctioned for citizens the eternal right to carry guns.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Wake Up AMERICA"
This should be required reading for every AMERICAN citizen! Not only does this book describe the current "ILLEGAL" immigration problem but it discribes a more serious problem that is being kept from American citizens. That is the DESTRUCTION of the UNITED STATES of AMERICA as a sovereign country! Welcome "The North American Union" and the "AMERO". This is why the Democratic "Left", Big Business, and Bush (New World Order) want open borders. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK, WAKE UP, and DO SOMETHING TO STOP THE LOSE OF OUR COUNTRY!

5-0 out of 5 stars There Is A Reason Why It's The First Amendment
The Founding Fathers, in their wisdom, felt that their new fledging country would be helpless without the freedom to speak in the arena of ideas. In Jim Gilchrist's "Minutemen", he documents that freedom of speech is only free if the local power agrees with the message. He is shouted down, called vicious and vile names, and denied parade permits for simply trying to tell America they will no longer be a nation without border control.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cost of Ethnic Cleansing
This is the best book I have read on the tragic Greek-Turkish "population exchange" of the 1920s. I found the book remarkable for several reasons: One is its organization. Chapters alternate between diplomatic history and human suffering stories, many of them based on interviews with survivors of that era. This has a powerful effect on the reader who sees how people were dying while "diplomats talked." Another is its fairness in discussing the responsibilities of each side. (The official Greek and Turkish positions place all the blame on the other side.) And finally the coverage of the suffering of the Muslims that were sent from Greece to Turkey as part of the "exchange." As the books states on p. 161 "In most cases, the fate of these migrants was not as terrible as that of the Anatolian Christians who fled either in the heat of war, or as a result of forced marches followed by forced embarkations on ships riddled with disease; but the Muslim exodus was bad enough."

5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptional novel-
After reading this book I completely agree with the crowd. La travesia de Enrique is an interesting read especially if you are interested in knowing the details about what children and adults experience in their journey to the USA from Central America in hopes for a better life and future. The author is a journalist and experienced the journey first hand herself, a daring experience that she wanted to endure in order to make writing the book very accurate.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!
La Travesia de Enrique es unos de los mejores libros que he leido en mi vida. Sonia Nazario habla de una manera tan viva que es como estar mirando una pelicula. 5-0 out of 5 stars Not racism, hate or zenophobia.Just the facts.
This book talks about the reality of the status of immigration in our Country. It is a great read and I recommend it to anyone concerned about the state of affairs in our Country today.
1-0 out of 5 stars Well written, racist and xenophobic book.
Ok, the author is an scholar, and after teaching and working in a university environment, he knows how to structure his sentences and chapters to communicate his message.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mexifornia :A State of Becoming
Hanson brings a rare and timely perspective to his analysis of the immigration explosion we are now experiencing. He views this difficult and challenging subject through the eyes of a highly respected historian, a member of academia and as a multiple generation resident in a highly affected area. No matter where you might stand on the issue, I suggest that he will present facts which are likely to modify your current viewpoint. This is a most informative and thorough presentation and is a must read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Barone shows us how similar our issues around immigration today are to those of 1900
With all the agitation around immigration it is important to have as much actual information as possible rather than getting sucked in by old impressions and media slant.Michael Barone is one of our generation's treasures. He knows a great deal about our country and its politics because he has devoted a lifetime to the study of our history, our culture, and our politics. He says what he says the way he says it in order to inform rather than couching things carefully to win you to a certain point of view.
2-0 out of 5 stars This Is Not 1925
The idea behind this book is an interesting one.Mr. Barone suggests that, although some fear the recent influx of immigrants to the United States, there's really nothing to worry about if we learn the lessons of history.Three of the largest immigrant populations from the early part of the 20th century, he points out, have "woven themselves" into mainstream American life with great success. Now, three large "new" populations can do the same, based on their similarities to those who came before. The black population ("immigrant" in the sense that it moved from the rural South, practically a foreign country, to the industrial North) can weave itself into mainstream American life as the Irish did, the Latino population as the Italians did, and the Asian population as the Jews did.Sounds pretty good, and Barone has plenty of statistical and historical evidence to support himself. Then he goes and ruins it with a political bias he claims he doesn't have.5-0 out of 5 stars Quotas and victims
Some of the criticisms of Mr. Barone's work, mostly from the anti-immigration nativists, seem to me to be wholly misguided. What Mr. Barone is encouraging people to do is to think differently about how America views immigration AND race. I think he clearly, and devastatingly, shows that today's victim-oriented, quota-based debate hurts the people it's designed to help. He also encourages Americans to be more hopeful about the ability of society to slowly assimilate different 'races' (he makes the point frequently that Jews and the Irish were once thought of as a 'race') and the ability of those 'races' to succeed in America.Read more
