1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and grossly over-priced
I had to use this textbook for my Statistics for Pyschology Majors class at UTD. All of the other comments about the errors are true, but I have something else to add: the syntax and examples. I can handle dry reading. I've had to do plenty of it in my major. But much of this book goes beyond dry to just plain unintelligible. I'm not a math dummy. I took three semesters of algebra including College Algebra and got straight A's. A number of people in my class gave up on the book andrelied soley on the lectures. My professor told me that she isn't going to use this book next semester.
2-0 out of 5 stars errors
although this book is not bad and explains statistical concepts in a nice way, the amount of errors this book has is huge.

3-0 out of 5 stars Now where did I put that book?
This book was so unremarkable that I put it down after reading the first six very short chapters. I've since read other books and wanted to come back to this one. But I seem to have misplaced it. I suppose I would have found the material more interesting if the author had delved a little deeper into the topic rather than skim the surface at breakneck speed. It might be a good introduction. But you'll likely finish the book wanting to know more.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great primer and reference to fall back on
While no doubt I've heard many of nuggets contained in the book over the course of my high school and college days, I found Koomey's book a pleasurable read and useful synthesis of approaches and tips for completing quality research and analyses.Internalizing Koomey's advice is going to help most readers be more discriminating consumers of published research and better authors of their own research. It's a reference source I've already gone back to myself in just a few weeks and a great training resource for new consultants my company hires.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a waste of time and money
This is actually the first review I have ever written - prompted by the complete and utter uselessness of this book. There's hardly one original thought in the entire text - which is comprised mostly of 2 page chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall Best Work for Study of Educational Research Methods
As a university instructor who has used this text, I would recommend it for its thoroughness and attention to detail in the teaching of educational research methods. Most students are intimidated by research courses. However, this book lays out the reasons for research and the ways of approaching research problems in a step-by-step fashion that is both scholarly and common sense. It is also a great resource to have on one's library shelf.I highly recommend it it for graduate research courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, enagaging - useful for new researchers as well as experienced professionals. Great basis for team workshopping.
Hy Mariampolski is an inspiring man - and both generous and energetic in spreading the word about qualitative techniques and ethnography. It is refreshing to read such a well-written guide without having all the self-promotional baggage that litters too many practitioners handbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plain-English guidance for excellent software
This book comes so highly recommended because it lowers all the barriers for the student. The text is easily absorbed, the software is free, and the datasets are there. Many guides on Social Network Analysis (SNA) seem like they are written for someone who already knows how to do SNA. The original Pajek manual is one example (Pajek is pronounced pai-yak). This book is like the missing manual. It guides the novice carefully through the analysis process. The free software, Pajek, is one of the best Social Network programs currently. Although Pajek was initially just for visualizations of large networks, and it still only has a subset of the UCInet functions, the algorithms are fast and plentiful. The book and software should keep a student busy until they add more programmatic SNA tools to their toolkit (e.g. R-project sna).

1-0 out of 5 stars The digital version is a joke!
It does not allow paid customer to read it in another computer or print a hard copy. To be exact, it allows paid customer to print 5 pages every 28 days. The book has more than 300 pages, so go figure how long it takes to print your book. The purpose of buying a manual is to learn to use the software while reading it. How do you expect your customer to use the software when he is reading the book on the same computer? And this is hurting the eyes! This is damaging Amazon's reputation too!

5-0 out of 5 stars A really exellent textbook and manual

5-0 out of 5 stars The most effective (and easy) way to learn statistics
For a while, I was looking for a good book on statistics, and finally, I found it! This book is excellent for those who are going to start learning statistics (every thing is explained very well from very beginning!) as well as for those (like me) who look for more advanced books. It is almost perfect! It has precise and clear explanations, simple brief examples, thoughtfully chosen questions and tasks at the end of each chapter, good overall organization. Every word (well, sentence) contributes to understanding of concepts, no unnecessary information, no waste of time. Every new concept is built on the previous ones, no gaps in explanation, no unanswered questions. It feels as if the author follows a reader's mind, if some questions arise they get answered in the next paragraphs. Pure pleasure! Ultimate book on statistics! Highly recommend. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A valuable "how to interview" guide for researchers
""Learning From Strangers" is a book that will greatly augment any coursework in anthropology, sociology, or education research methods.I rank it right up there with classic works like Powdermaker's "Stranger and Friend",Agar's "The Professional Stranger"and Van Maanen's ""Tales of the Field". This volume is well worth reading for those new to qualitative research methods, as well as for those who might question how well they're doing with interviewing as a data collection method. The author uses a conversational approach as he generously shares and reflects upon his many years of interview experience. This sharing isn't self-serving, but sensitively, (and importantly) covers all situations: the tricky, the awkward, and the difficult. The chapter on "Issues in Interviewing" resonated with me.For example, as I was alone in the field, doing the qualitative research for my dissertation in South Africa, I was astonished at how tiring I found my interviewing to be.I had been discussing the personal histories of rural educators who had themselves been educated under apartheid, and was completely exhausted by the process.Weiss put my mind to rest when he discusses the levels of emotion that are shared between interviewer and respondent ( at page 137).He also debunks some persistent research myths such as the need for a fixed set of questions (the process is iterative), or the so-called "interviewer-respondent match" (the insider-outsider dilemma).Interviewing is a technique that people frequently assume they "can do" but this book highlights the many intricacies of what are fundamentally social interactions undertaken in pusuit of research data. The only improvement I could suggest, and this is owing mainly to its publication date of 1996,would be to include a broader elaboration of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software, of which there are now many examples of user-friendly software.Of course, one must conduct the interviews first to have any data, so I recommend that you help yourself in that effort by reading this valuable book.

4-0 out of 5 stars textbook for my Qualitative research 2 class
This book was interesting to read. I found that I could sit and read and enjoy this book. The examples in it are specific, and although I am doing research in a field different from the examples, I find that they are interesting and thought provoking. I know that my interviewing skills are getting better from having read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging jewel
Weiss's book mirrors the combination of seemingly unforced flow and attention to focus that are characteristic of good qualitative interviews.I appreciated that it tackled delicate questions of ethics, editing and developing analysis in a way that bolstered the reader's confidence in their ability to develop good judgment, while never minimizing the risks. The use of excerpts of transcripts showing exactly where interviewers' decisions had affected outcomes, and of specific examples throughout, made this book a compulsive "read" -- I wish that more authoratitive publications managed its grace and energy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide to research techniques in the social sciences
Lee gives a six star performance by improving on what was already a five star performance in the third edition before Kerlinger's death. This is a must have book for anyone planning to do statistical analysis ,not only in psychology, but in the social sciences as well(especially economics). For example,Lee points out(pp.265,863)the importance of doing some type of test for goodness of fit(Chi- Square test, etc.)BEFORE a researcher assumes that he can make use of the normal probability distribution as an approximation of the data set at hand. This has not beenthe case in econometric time series studies of (a) financial markets(financial economics, portfolio analysis)or of(b) real, durable investment over the business cycle. The Black-Scholes equation and the CAPM model, both used as foundations in business finance courses in all countries worldwide, just assumes normality. The famous Keynes-Tinbergen debate about the logical foundations of econometrics in the Economic Journal of 1939-40 reveals that the founders of econometrics did not test the data correctly for normality.Keynes's comments about the necessity to demonstrate the uniformity, homogeneity, and stability of the time series data before any multiple regressions were run was ridiculed as the foolish ,out of date utterances of a once magnificient mind that had deteriorated by the late 1930's.Benoit Mandelbrot's massive data analysis, replicated by many different researchers in many different countries since the early 1970's,shows that the assumption of normality ,underlying statistical price data analysis done by economists in practically all financial markets(stocks, bonds, money, currency, exchange, commodities)over the last 60 years,is all wrong. There is one minor oversite in the fourth edition. There is no discussion of Ellsberg's paradox and/or ambiguous probabilities.Lee does ,of course, discuss Keynes's concept of the weight of the evidence and probabilities that have low weight. Both Lee and Brady had agreed 15 years ago that Keynes's w,defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1,was practically the same as Ellsberg's rho, defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1.In real life, most of the probabilities will turn out to be ambiguous(plus being underweighted). In such situations it will not be possible to treat probability according to the Kolmogorov axioms. The experimental-empirical work of Tversky-Kahneman demonstrates that the vast majority of real world decision makers are rational(contrary to the conclusion drawn from the evidence by Tversky-Kahneman)but are working with ambiguous or underweighted probabilities.

3-0 out of 5 stars Foundations of Behavioral Research
Foundations of Behavioral Research by Kerlinger and Lee is one of my prescribed books, for a Research course that I am taking, as part of a Masters program. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of a kind
There are very few books written that covers as many important topics in behavioral research methods as this one.Earlier editions were outstanding and the fourth edition is exceptional. The new material in the 4th Editionis helpful to today's researcher. Both researcher and student doingresearch should have this book. The examples are extremely useful infacilitating the understanding of research methods and the analysis ofdata. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An essential entry-level guide to marketing research
"If you intend to execute a particular market research project yourself, you will certainly need to read more than this book - for the sake of brevity, this book won't go into a great deal of depth on any single technique, but will merely open the toolbox and explain its contents and application," states author Edward F. McQuarrie, who clearly sums up the purpose of this book in the preface.
