1-0 out of 5 stars "Poverty" Misunderstood.
Let me start off by mentioning all the positive elements of this work (of which there are not many). In the beginning, the author shares accurate Census figures about poverty along with insight that it is a relative condition which applies to all races and creeds. She also recommends that educators should teach and strengthen rather than praise and condemn. From here, however, the work slips into the abyss. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Start
I work in a large middle school which hit the 50% level of students in poverty a few years ago. The majority of our poverty students are white, while the number of African-American students is less than 5%.The percent of Hispanic students in poverty in our school/community is growing.Ruby Payne's description of students and families in poverty fits our school to a large degree. Our entire corporation has been exposed to her materials, we've had Ruby as a guest presenter and our entire middle school staff has studied her book. We continue to incorporate much of what her materials recommend. We are having good success with this endeavor, and like anything in education, it is a work in progress.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for any...
This is a must read for all teachers, pastors, doctors, lawyers, who deal with various social levels and just about anyone else who feels they can't understand why poor people are poor and stay that way generation after generation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Skip the profanity
A fairly good text, it probably covers the field better than other available sources. However, the selection of illustrations seem to be chosen based on how much profanity they can include. I realize that crisis situations involve people who don't monitor their usage, but why include every F--- and other curse word when they aren't needed to convey the meaning. 5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable tool in the field of mental health.
Gilliland and James have successfully created an extremely comprehensive introduction to crisis intervention methodology in this text.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
I swear by the Betty Crocker Cookbook. I got mine before I got married (over five years ago), and I am always referring to it for tips, techniques and everyday recipes that you can't find in ordinary books/magazines. I kinda want a new one now 'cause it's even more detailed (I have the 9th Edition). Highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
This is probably one of the best cook books for new home makers (just married) or beginning hobbyist cookers (men or women). It is well written and properly indexed.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the Basics Plus More!
This cookbook is a must-have for every person who ever uses a kitchen. It has all the basics, like how long to bake a potato or cook a chicken, that young people away from home for the first time (or those of us with bad memories) need. But it also has delicious recipes for the braver sorts and even nutritional info for the diet conscious!People have called me from across the country for recipes from this book.I have used it more than any other cookbook by 100 times.Everything I have ever made from this book has been a hit.Betty has my highest recommendation. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful to learn about attachment
This was one of many books I have been reading regarding attachment. This book had my sons name written all over it.I am a mother of a foreign adopted son with many issues ahead. This has by far been the best one I have found. It showed examples of problems along with a recommended solution to correcting the behavior. We are now seeing some much needed changes in our household.I highly recommend this selection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
Daniel Hughes really understands children with RAD! I especially would recommend this book for parents adopting or doing foster care.

We recently adopted a 9 yr old boy. This book helped me understand the source of his behavior and have more compassion. There weren't a lot of methods to help me cope, but I hope his other book will have that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rather dull, but easy to read
This textbook is not the most thrilling read of a lifetime, but its also not difficult.Somestimes the organization is a little odd, but it could be worse.
3-0 out of 5 stars Refers to 6th edition, copyright 2002
A solid revision of a very useful textbook and clinical practice resource. Numerous typographical and typesetting errors will annoy those who expect more from the publishers of this social work classic, who appear to have rushed publication.Infotrac has only marginal value to working professionals and no value for enrolled students with library access.Wait for the second printing or stick with the 5th edition if you can.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners in practice/good resource for veterans
I had this book last semester as a MSW student at WVU. I have found it useful as a resource guide for my current practice as a family-based therapist as well. I would recommend this book to all those out there inpractice.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars for proffessionals
Great book but aimed more at therapists than parents. There is a good chapter on parenting.I did think it was worthwhile though reading about the type of therapy these kids need, especially since mine is about to start therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellant resource
We have been through quite a journey so far with our newly adopted girls, 7,8.Many resources are ineffective that the special needs program gives you when you start. This book helps you understand and work through the special issues of neglected and abused children.I wish we had this book before we evedr adopted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Facilitating Developmental Attachment: The Road to Emotional Recovery and Behavioural Change in Foster and Adopted Children
This author has shared his skills in working with children who have been damaged emotionally by being removed from their birth parents. 4-0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive detail
This book is certainly very complete and authoritative; but it goes into such extreme detail that it is tedious to read. My classmates and I soon fell behind in our reading assignments because the chapters seem to go on forever and the organization of the chapters is not very clear. It tends to seem like pages and pages of similar details. The book could be greatly improved by highlighting important concepts and definitions, a more visually identifiable hierarchy of sub-headings, and concise chapter summaries. The diagrams that explain the generalist intervention model, however, are excellent, and I still have them in my mind's eye for reference, even after finishing the course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes! This book is awesome!
I learned more about "doing" psychotherapy from this book than all of my other books combined. I used this book often throughout my internship, and I found it very helpful in many ways. The author helps to validate what novice therapists are thinking about and doing and worrying about. The author gives specific examples throughout the book, so that you know how to visualize what he's talking about. If you are into relational work (and I personally believe that all therapy is relational), then this book is for you. Not many books really outline the therapist-client relationship. Most books say, "Focus on process and not content," but then don't explain how to do that or show you what it looks like. This book is paving the way for how to address the "process" in therapy and not just the content. You get tangible, concrete examples of many, many situations that may come up when working with clients.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Muddle of Everywhere
For those who still believe that the forced (We voted on this WHEN?) conversion of the America into a "multicultural," ever-less-European caldron of aggravated grievances and simmering sensibilities remains limited to places like Los Angeles and New York, they should read clinical psychologist Mary Pipher's glowing account of the "transformation" of Lincoln, Nebraska. Lincoln is Pipher's hometown, one of the quiet American towns targeted by the U.S Office of Refugee Resettlement as a "preferred community for newly arrived refugees."
2-0 out of 5 stars The Plight of Refugees in a magnificent piece
The convergence of a fascinating and easy to follow narrative with a serious discussion of a theme of world proportions is seldom found in literature. Best seller author Mary Phipher met the challenge of writing with from the perspective of a health professional and a human being who exhibits compassion for a "people group," the refugee population.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good info on generations in the workplace
This is probably your best bet for a book on generations in the workplace. It's not long on data, but it does apply knowledge about generations in a very useful way. It's not a deep treatment, but it gets the job done. A fairly quick read, and good if you just want to understand people of different ages in the workplace.
4-0 out of 5 stars All Business
I found this book to be very informative and readable. The book gives a number of good insights about the different values of four generations in the workplace today. There are lots of examples and solutions to making the workplace more productive and fun.Unfortunately, the book's focus is on business, making money and working together better.Guess that's what pays the bills.I guess the insights can help in relationships throughout society but for those who are looking for answers outside of business this might be a hard read to get through.
