5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the book
I found this 2 tape set, narrated by the author, to be superior in many respects to the longer book.First, given the limited time available, the points made about crime avoidance are reduced to their essential elements.Second, the author is a convincing narrator, who brings passion and the abhorence of violent crime to his subject. In particular, the author's narration of the crime described in the opening pages of the book, and the victim's instinctive reliance on the "gift of fear" which saves her life, is riveting. While the book is worthy of a careful read, the taped version is an excellent condensation.Buy it, if not for yourself, for your sons, daughters, cousins, nieces, and nephews. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Parents Call
Many experts and famous people support this books: Marian Wright-Edelman, Bill Cosby, Alvin Poussaint etc. but as a parent I want to say this book has helped tremendously. The pain my daughter and I were experiencing together and respectively was enormous. This book was a really helpful step along the long road of healing. It is many tiny hurtful incidents that can leave a large wound. It is from this wounded place that people find their violent selves and lose control. This book helped me understand that and so I understand my situation and daughter better.I treat this situation with a level of understanding and calmness that I never had before. The absence of this often made me verbally violent towards my daughter, only making our situation worse.I thank the authors for calling out a problem that everyone wants to ignore. With or without the support of experts and famous people- as a real person-I can say book gave me tools and hope and combined with other measures hashelped create a better life and better for me and my daughter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Answers to an eras problem
This book does an excellent job of identifying, articulating and fleshing out a problem that is so ingrained in our culture, that few people realize what a problem it is.Often it is only hindsight that offers the insight that this book gives regarding the toxic levels of violence in our society.Hopefully, this book and books like it will offer a new, more sophisticated and enlightened way for humans to solve problems. Because it is all fun and games until someone loses and eye. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Violence is Man's Original Sin Says the Good Doctor
Because it reaches deep inside the dark soul of man, this is a book that has aroused a great deal of controversy. Michael Ghiglieri has tackled a very difficult subject - the origins of male violence.Emerging from the field of anthropology and evolutionary psychology is the argument that male violence is deeply entrenched, that it is part and parcel of being male, not largely due to social factors. This idea makes people uncomfortable because if violence is a largely immutable male characteristic, than utopian social schemes won't be able banish it, to throw it on the dust heap of history. The author is an anthropology professor who toiled as a field biologist in Africa and Asia, where he worked with chimpanzees, the most intelligent of the great apes and man's closest animal relation. This work with the great apes - once thought to be peaceful animals - has contributed to his conviction that violence - while varying by degree from individual to individual - is an immutable human trait as it is among the chimpanzees.Ghiglieri is an advocate of evolutionary psychology and believes that most traits make sense when viewed through the prism of reproduction. He argues that male violence is largely a reproductive strategy.
1-0 out of 5 stars not a nice way to hundle evolutionary biology.
I5-0 out of 5 stars PC Police beware.
You will probably find that most other reviews of this book say something along the lines of "Interesting arguments, but..." or "Compelling stories, but..."We have grown accustomed to living well and find it almost incomprehensible that man at his basest nature is evil.We therefore try to caveat the common sense conclusions and compelling stories found in Dark Side of Man and say to ourself that things really can't be all that bad.People live better for a variety of reasons - God, parents, friends, a conscious decision to make society a better place.Dr. Ghiglieri shows what may happen to us when resources become scarce and we are forced to address our primary concern - survival.Don't let the politically correct naysayers dissuade you from reading this book. The book is not nearly as fatalistic as some may have you believe. The last chapter shows that we can all live better, be better. We of course are not apes.We can make decisions after all. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Academic indeed......
Honestly, I couldn't make heads or tails of this book - and I am an entirely over-educated offspring of academics, a native speaker of English, and a voracious reader.I just didn't understand the words!I purchased this book before moving to Sierra Leone to manage an aid program, hoping to gain insight into the people I would be living and working with. This book, however, was more about anthropological theory than the Mende people; it served to illustrate academic points rather than the cultural world they inhabit.Entire chapters were devoted to such esoterica as the meaning of "twins" and the supreme symbolic significance of placement of hammocks vs. stools within the household.Meanwhile, the prose is peppered with endless usage of such words as "homologous" and "hermeutic" along with liberal sprinklings of Mende words - which are defined the first time they are used, but as there is no glossary to subsequently refer to by the end of the book the reader is lost inlinguistic gobbledy-gook.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.
I was living in Jonesboro, Arkansas when Andrew Golden & Mitchell Johnson opened fire at their middle school. It was like, this sort of thing isn't supposed to happen in MY town. And they were only 11 and 13 years old! This little book was written shortly after the shooting as a sort of venting mechanism and I was curious to read Dr. Kellerman's take on it all.
4-0 out of 5 stars Did some of you actually READ the book?
From the flavor of some of the past reviews, I wonder if the reviewers bothered to read the whole book...and read it carefully. It appears that a couple might have just skimmed through and this is no way to give any piece of literature a worthwhile critique.

5-0 out of 5 stars what I've been looking foreward
Being a double major in political science and economics, it seems that I'm always looking at ways to connect the two subjects. Prosperity and violence does this so brillitanly that i read the book in a matter of a few hours. The book talks about how trade has brought people toghether to create cities to trade creating goverments in order to control and facilitate the process. Through time, goverment and the economy became mutually dependent and modern countires became to develop which the books compares to newly independent countries in the 20th century. The books goes into the present dealing with the cold war and how former allies of America and the USSR are comping with the transition into the 21rst century. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars funny
If you feel the author of this book was irresponsible, then you have something coming. Go to college and understand how important research like this is. Then you will understand why is was important for him to preserve the culture in order to study it. The whole pretense of research, especially an ethnography, is that people trust you so you can study the truth and show your findings to the rest of the world. He found a lot in this research and this wouldn't have happened if he "told" on them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, yet highly disturbing
I write this review merely to respond to allegations that Fleisher is irresponsible.First of all, before you make that claim, enroll in one sociology course.Research like this is vital to understanding how humans operate, and without such research (not just about gangs, but about many aspects of life) policy recommendations would not be accurate, and problems would not be addressed appropriately.Had Fleisher reported all of the crimes that occurred during his time there, his research would have ended. As it is, there is very little research done on girls in gangs.Second, if you had completed the book, you would have seen that Fleisher did have a friend report what he saw with Amy and RoniRo (p 247 -- second full paragraph.)Third, he didn't approve of the gang girls choices to sell drugs -- he said he understood it.Granted that is a choice that most people cannot understand, but after witnessing all that he did, how can you blame him for being disenfranchised?
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
The author handled the situations almost perfectly and I applaud him for that. Being a reformed gang member I was suprised that he even got these kid to trust him enough not to think he was the feds. People complain about how he allowed them to smoke and deal drugs but if he had tried to stop them he would have been dead. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars some good material here
Like all anthologies, this is a bit of a mixed bag, but overall it is strong. Even the weaker peices are OK. Some of the essays are just summaries of the history of nonviolent action in some geographical region. Sort of interesting, but I found those pieces to have too much information crammed into too little space. Fortunately, most of the articles are case studies of particular nonviolent campaigns or movements. Some of them are simply narratives--it's not clear what lessons are to be drawn. Most of these case studies analyze the movement or campaign in question in such a way that activists can draw some valuable lessons from them, although in some cases the lessons are left implicit instead of being spelled out, which is kind of annoying. These lessons include both ideas on the application of nonviolent tactics and examinations about how these tactics have diffused from one group or region to another. Finally, there are a few more theoretical pieces, including the conclusion by Zunes and Kurtz, which I thought was the best thing in the book. They critique much nonviolent theory as being overly voluntarist--focusing too much on what social activists do and not enough on how the social and political contexts they are operating create different opportunities and constraints. Zunes and Kurtz argue for a balanced approach that analyzes systems of power and tries to understand how nonviolent activists can best put pressure on them, which is going to differ immensely depending on the larger context. Zunes and Kurtz also examine why nonviolent tactics have increasingly come to be favored over armed struggle--but also the ways in which nonviolent activists have needed to continually innovate as governments have gotten wise and adopted effective means of diffusing the power of nonviolent activism (means that range from making it easy to get permits for marches to paramilitary death squads, depending on geographical region). Overall, this is a valuable source of information on nonviolent movements, what has worked and what hasn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking research
I've worked and taught in the field of peacebuilding for 25 years and consider this book the single most important research that has been done in the field. Varshney breaks new ground in conducting indepth research into why some cities in India into fell into violence and some did not during times of high national tension. 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
Varshney had the opportunity to examine the Hindu-Muslim divide in India using fresh glasses, and he has failed at it. His book is a litany of hackneyed generalizations and simplistic arguments.

5-0 out of 5 stars a work of excellence
Varshneys research is particulary impressive because of the concise research method that he upholds. I am pleased that he has studied both peaceful and violent cities--giving his research model a basis for comparison. I have purchased20 copies of Ethnic Conflict and Civic life and have circulated the work among my friends.Varshney's work gives us hope for world peace. this is the work of utter genius.very impressive research. particulary interesting was his intricate methodology of janwars in conflict. I highly recomment this book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS!!!
This is a book that should be read by everyone who is in college, teaches at a college, is a college administrator, and parents of college students. It is incredibly informative and is a real eye-opener.Please, remember that this book was written over 10 years ago.It is somewhat dated, but still pertains to the problem to acquaintance rape today.Read this and take the information in.People need to realize the prevalence of rape on campuses and between acquaintances.Should be read by everyone so that myths can be abolished and people can truly see acquaintance rape for what it is-- RAPE and, subsequently, a crime punishable by prison.

3-0 out of 5 stars Important But Flawed
This book deals with an important, sensitive message, but it is too narrowed.Sadly, a victimizer today can be anyone.I was raped in my second year of college by an upper classmate--another woman.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had read it before.....
This is a must-read for all women and men too! Rape does not happen in dark alleys by strangers in trenchcoats! As a survivor of sexual assault by a "friend", I could relate to this book. I wish I had read it before I was assaulted, then I would have been more prepared for the aftermath!

4-0 out of 5 stars Was the development industry complicit?
Uvin's argument is not that aid workers in Rwanda participated in the genocide of 1994, nor even that they were accomplices in it.Rather, "AIDING VIOLENCE" contends that the development business--by the very nature of its mission--contributed to a state of severe inequity and "structural violence" that over many decades had made Rwanda fertile ground for widespread ethnic hatred leading to massive bloodshed.Read more
