5-0 out of 5 stars Indespensible boat manual
I'm not talking about yachting type books. I have owned and operated commercial fishing boats in Alaska, for over 30 years. And this book demystifies bonding, grounding, AC boat wiring, lightning protection, a whole chapter just on batteries, and that's just the electrical part of the book. If your unsure about some aspect of your boat's electrical system or machinery, and are walking the docks trying to find out something about them, GET THIS BOOK. Some of that BS one hears on the dock can sink you.

5-0 out of 5 stars a very usefull manual
covers many important areas where problems usually arise. easily understood explanations and instructions to find and resolve problems. great resource to keep on the boat.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
i am a marine student in nz, i was doing a assigment of boat battery. i went to libarary for this book and i read through the first chapter of the book which gives me from basic to depth ideas about battery. it's worth to own a book like this if you are a real boatie. perticularly for trouble shooting. cheers, enjoy ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not a radar expert, but with this book I COULD BE!!!
Mr. Stimson's book, "Introduction to Airborne Radar (2nd Edition)," has been one of my most treasured purchases from my graduate school education. I expected a book filled with equations and bad graphs and tables - I was wonderfully surprised by the high quality graphics, easy to follow mathematical treatment, and historical views into past and present radar systems.
5-0 out of 5 stars No other introduction needed
Stimson's second edition is a slight improvement over his first. "Slight" because improving near perfection remains a difficult task. Nowhere else is such clarity apparent in the complex field of radars. Thanks to Stimson this subject could be understood by my grandmother. If only Stimson would carry edition three to the next echelon, extending depth and detail to levels required to actually build and make a working, modern radar. Like applying his talent to the intricacies of adaptive processing, a completion of SAR computational demands and processes (vs. stopping at the digital filter FFT), nuances of ever more important phase noise, test, measurement and producibility of radar systems that shouldn't cost a million dollars per copy, but a fraction of this with proper processes and synergistic integration vs. the "Mister Potato Head" approach of slapping together the latest-greatest-of-every-subsystem-technology still practiced by engineers in just about everything. Unfortunately this may be our last version from Stimson as he's no longer a young man and such efforts are monumental. Even so, he's made himself a national asset creating this magnificent edition, probably lasting longer than any of us in the field today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not easy reading
I bought this book because I work with radar and would like to improve my understanding of it. This book is a good middle ground, but for a dummy like me, several chapters require re-reads.One of the most annoying things is that when the author describes related material, he doesn't compare and contrast as much as write one paragraph on the attributes of thing A and then another paragraph on thing B using all but two words that were used in the first paragraph. The reader must wade through this writing and then compare and contrast themself.Read more

I recommend this book because it covers all the material for the Private Pilot license in an easy to understand manner. It is full of colored pictures and important concepts in bold print. This is a great book for studying to become a private pilot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, execpt 1 thing!
Overall the book was great, it gave me my pilots license but the 1 thing the book didn't do so well on was the weather section. I had trouble understanding the weather theory section so I had to refrence another book so I could learn about the weather. That's it, just the theory, the weather reports and forcast section was good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning Tale of Old Whaling Days
I just finished this last night...wow! The narration is lively and keeps the pace of the story while the author imparts a great deal of information that could have been dull but is not. The prose is so vivid that I could not eat while reading the passages about dismembering the whale; I could almost smell the burning oil and feel the slick decks. Amazing that men made a living this way! I can hardly wait to start Philbrick's MAYFLOWER.

4-0 out of 5 stars How innovation changed an industry and the world...
This book not only offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of shipping but also a fascinating look at how disruptive innovation can be. You get a front row seat to changes wrought by the mighty shipping container. In this very well researched book the author provides wonderful glimpses into the labour aspects, international trade aspects, finanace, technical aspects, and actual ship design & contruction. The book is destined to become a classic in detailing how innovation can radically change an industry and the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boxing in goods unleashes globalization: The world is not flat
In "On the waterfront," perhaps the saddest point of the film is where Fr. Barry eulogizes K. O. Duggan, killed off by the mob. But Marc Levinson has located a larger villain, the real force that killed off so many longshoremen's careers: the standardized shipping container. While a highly trained crane operator working today's docks earns $120,000 a year, their numbers are few and few of them are former longshoremen or sons of longshoremen. And cargo handling costs have dropped over 90%. Yet this is only the start. The shipping container reducedspoilage, theft, insurance costs, delays, and the entire cost of going global. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not for anyone who doesn't work in logistics
If you work in logistics, buy this book.It is well worth trudging through the tedious parts to get to the gems. With some severe editing, pictures and diagrams it could be a best seller. But the presentation is more like that of a sterile textbook than popular writing. As someone who worked in logistics I found it interesting. But it is certainly not a book that anyone will read again and again. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars McPhee is back!
John McPhee is arguably the greatest practitioner of literary non-fiction in America since Joseph Mitchell. Some of his works are more accessible than others, but his knack for making complex and obscure subjects interesting and approachable is perhaps the greatest of his gifts (although his flawless control of language is right up there).
4-0 out of 5 stars Transported
For anyone with any interest at all in how commercial stuff is moved from place to place in our large country.
5-0 out of 5 stars Travel tales
John McPhee is the ultimate observer. He has an uncanny ability to reveal interesting details in the most mundanesurroundings.Much of what he discloses are things we often overlook.Better yet, he imparts what he sees with impressive clarity and delightful wit.He draws on extensive experience, from purposely stalling aircraft [Table of Contents] to great ships roaming the seas [Looking For A Ship].The underlying theme of this volume is a bit more ground-based, as he joins truckers, bargemen, train engineers and his son-in-law.With these companions, he exposes a bit more of our world to us.McPhee may not be able to engage in "talking shop" with the men he deals with in this book, but he's a master at "listening shop".What he hears from them is conveyed to us in a way that puts us right next to him, attending closely.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Textbook for every Aerospace Engineer
This is the single best book on rocket propulsion systems, covering both liquid and solid rocket engines, hybrid rocket systems, and a dedicated chapter on electric propulsion. The authors include excellent illustrations and graphs to enhance the text, and practical examples which help the reader to grasp the theory. After loaning a copy of this book for over two years from my library, i finally bought it! 5-0 out of 5 stars The Book Of Choice For Students and Dreamers
Like many young men, and I daresay women, I was drawn to airport management after exposure to Burt Lamcaster's sterling portrayal of a harried airport manager in the Ross Hunter classic AIRPORT.Lancaster showed us that a man could handle a million problems all at once, if he had the right combination of grit and gray cells. It wasn't only the glamor, it was the idea of helping people get through their day--even when the people in question were six or seven miles up in the air--that made me consider airport management as a major at school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Shop Manuals...
Even if you just do basic repairs or routine service to your car, the Bentley manuals are the only real game in town. They are copied directly from BMW original manuals and are very detailed. When I first got my 528, one of the cup holders failed in the back seat. The manual showed me an easy way to remove them. I also chose to replace the center arm rest and trying to figure that out without the manual would have been impossible. With the manual it was a 10 minutes affair. These two items paid for the cost of the manuals and the manuals add to the value of my car when and if I sell it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but lacks detail
Needed to replace water pump, thermostat, belts and hoses on E39 530, details are lacking. Good source for general information, but most of that is available on the Net.

    4-0 out of 5 stars BMW 5 Series (E39) Service Manual: 1997-2002 (BMW 5 Series (E39) (2 Volume Set) (BMW 5 Series (E39))
It's a pity that the technical manual doesn't cover the BMW 525TDS or TD (Diesel versions). These Diesel-engine equipped E39-versions differ of course in the engine mechanics (i.e. a M51TU motor engine), but has also differences in the electrical wiring, hence making the details of the Electrical Diagrams almost useless (when it comes to the details of the connections).

5-0 out of 5 stars FEMALE AFRICAN BUSH PILOT IN THE 30's GIVES INSIDE VIEW
Beryl Markham's book West with the Night is a true story of how she lived and worked in Africa as a push pilot back in the 1930's -- almost amazing for a woman...what an experience alone-- what an adventure-- but her writing -- ahhh that's something amazing in itself....from dealing with the Blackwater Die to the lion who almost ate her to search for a Libyan port and a fallen colleague-- a beautiful book...each chapter is written almost like a true short story....she's a beautiful writer and to think this is a piece of our women's past that is here to still cherish-- belongs on the shelf of every women's studies office...great for a young woman to read....especially great gift to a chick going off to college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written
West With the night is Beryl Markham's memoir of life as a bush pilot in 1930s Africa. The beautifully written prose paints evocative pictures of the Serengeti in the reader's brain, and each paragraph is dense and satisfying. A wonderful read, especially for fans of Out of Africa - and some of the same people are mentioned in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the most beautifully written book I have ever read.
The exceptional wordcrafting in West With The Night brings Africa alive and makes it almost a personal experience. Beryl Markham was a most interesting individual and her life growing up in Africa is the beautiful background for this book. I have only reread one book in my sixty-some years and this is it. I enjoyed it at least as much the second time around.

3-0 out of 5 stars Acceptable but Annoying
This text is a fairly standard treatment of classical (macroscopic) thermodynamics. It is targeted specifically at students of mechanical engineering. Anyone going into some other engineering discipline that depends on thermo (e.g., chem eng) -- or into one of the hard sciences (physics, biophys, biochem, chemistry, etc.) -- will get very little value from this book. Its main focus seems to be on the use of the right formula to solve specific kinds of problems. ("Plug and chug.") 3-0 out of 5 stars so far
So far this book is pretty good, but it needs more examples and a short study guide with conversion problems would be helpful. Some of the homework problems really take some time and creative unit changes.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Cengel's 5th edition 2006 surpasses Moran/Shapiro. Definitely, no doubt!
Professor Cengel never ceases to update his series of premium McGraw-Hill Higher Education mechanical engineering textbooks. His flagship, the thermodynamics text - not yet a classic but already a standard and a universum's bestseller for the past 15 years - has become even more modernized and tightly integrated with nowadays media: electronic media (packaged with a free DVD-ROM instead of the CD-ROM), software, and online companion resources. Total professionalism throughout the entire package, a true aeuvre: hats off with regard to the accomplishment on both author's, editor's and publisher's part!

Great info on the history of aviation.Fast easy reading but not much on leglislation. The price of this book is criminal.

3-0 out of 5 stars Aviation and the Role of Government
Give a good chronological review from the early days of aviation thru deregulation. More of a history of aviation then a review of legislation. Book did not get deep into early legislation but did devote a lot of chapters to regulation/deregulation. Overall material was informative but had a lot of personal views from author. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars FULL of errors!
Great idea for the book BUT spoiled by incorrect facts and explanations on almost every page! Thus it is good if you use it for the questions but NOT the answers.
1-0 out of 5 stars watch this book, dont take the answers for granted!
I agree with michel that there are a lot of mistakes in the book. It is good for the questions but NOT for the answers.
1-0 out of 5 stars Dozens of errors for you to find and correct!
This book is literally full of errors and inaccuracies. While it has helped me refresh my memory a bit, one really has to be careful and critical to avoid learning wrong answers! Sometimes the given answer is even exactly the opposite of the correct answer. Some examples:

4-0 out of 5 stars E-30 Bentley Manual
The manual was recommended by other BMW E-30 owners and so far it has been pretty helpful.Without it I would not have been able to troubleshoot and find out the problem with the windows of my car.The pictures are black and white and could use many more to show the steps to follow. The electrical diagrams are good.I recommend you buy it if you are going to start working on your car but don't expect lots of pictures.

4-0 out of 5 stars BMW Manual
This is a very thorough book with a very useful troubleshooting section. It has plenty of detail though because it appears to be BMW backed it refers to the use of BMW special tools and doesn't give many alternatives

1-0 out of 5 stars No Way!three hundred dollars?
There is no way anyone should buy that thing for that much! You can go anywhere else and find it for cheaper by almost two hundred dollars! This is just crazy!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I got everthing I needed here
This has been money well spent,I am happy I got it and everyone who cant leave their car alone should own it. Not for the faint hearted or old fashioned fuel injection systems.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read, with a few shortcomings.
Overall this was a worthwhile book to read, especialy for someone like myself trying to learn a little more about engine tuning in general.I thought the author jumped around a bit on different topics, it could have flowed from one topic to another in a more logical order. There was also a bit of repetition, as though topics were pulled from previously written articles.I found the cases studies to be worthless - one or two would have sufficed. The font could also be a bit larger. Those nit pickings aside, I learned a great deal from this book, which was what I was hoping for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holy Cow Why Didn't I Find This Book Sooner?
I have a few books from the "Motorbooks Workshop" series and I am happy with all of them -in fact I'm kicking around the idea of building a library of them for myself, as they are all instant reference books full of valuable information. I could waste a weekend away just thumbing through them.
