Simply the best, most comprehensive history of the Packard Motorcar Company, it's products, and it's creators.Lavishly illustrated, including many archival photos, full specs on all the models, and intricate details of the products and company...all the info anyone really needs on these fabulous cars, and much more than the total of all the 'Other' Packard books combined. A substantially sized book which befits the aura of the Company as well.My only concern in an otherwise well researched effort is the largely inaccurate reporting of the intentions behind the Studebaker merger debacle...something the excellent James Ward book covers quite well (and accurately). I never understood flight until I read this book
Amazing Book. there were so many small nagging questions I had on the art of flying...and this book clarified those doubts.I have read so many books on flying, watched so many videos on flight. My flight insructor has taught me flying...but this one was the glue that put it all together.

Great book for pirate lovers - parents of easily frightened young ones should take caution
I bought this for my 4 year old son who LOVES pirates right now after viewing the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie and seeing the "Tall Ships" on the Great Lakes.I was afraid he would be scared by the pirates turning into skeletons, etc. but he was not - in fact he wanted to watch it again and again.So when I saw this book I knew he'd love it, and he does.Every night before bed he takes out all the separate letters and cards, has me read them, then puts them back in their envelopes.He also has me read all the different types of ships over and over again - he can now name some ship types by memory.This book is very well laid out - even I find the information very interesting and learned things I did not know.

A Useful Resource and Just Plain Fun
This is an attractively put together book on the history and details of pirate life. I have been searching for a resource on the subject that presents information on pirates in such a way as to not seem tedious and boring, but instead inspiring and fun (which, as we all know--pirates are fun!). With all the interest sparked on the pillaging bands of men, and sometimes women, with recent films this volume is a must have for anyone with an interest in pirates. Of course, it would obviously appeal to children and is definitely appropriate for that tender age group, but adults can also find much to appreciate.

Very Well Written, Factual and Fulfilling!
Stephen Ambrose did a great job of explaining the complicated details that led to the miracle of the transcontinental railroad. Anyone who appreciates herculean feats and the web of intrigue surrounding their beginnings, eventual birth and their effect on our great country will love this story. A true five star book.

An engrossing story about the companies and the men behind the building of the Railroad from Omaha to Sacramento. The US Government with its hands tied in the Civil war, sets up a competition between 2 private companies Union Pacific and the Central Pacific who start laying tracks from Omaho and Sacramento. The book details the progress through each state, with insight into the leaders and the workforce behind the construction. Then it reaches a fast pace once we enter Utah where the two tracks meet.

Invalid Statistics Zone: How and why stats lie
Unfortunately the central thesis of this book is not proved. Two previous reviewers, "Canuck" and the anonymous reader who posted the review on November 25, 2003, pretty much nailed the problem with this book: a failure to normalize the raw accident totals. Do low-time pilots have a higher fatal accident rate per hour flown than high-time pilots? It's impossible to say with the data provided. For example, given the following accident statistics covering a 17 year period:

Not bad but not great
There is some interesting information in here, but the book could have been half as long.Much of the book repeats basics that we all know from our student pilot training (or at least should know).The crash reports and summaries are a good reminder of some basic pilot errors that cause accidents, but I was hoping for more practical advice on risk management. ... Awesome Airplane Design Reference
One of the best airplane design books out there.I rank it with Torenbeek and Roskam.I refer to it during my design studies as well as my students.

Great book
I'm a second-year aerospace engineering student and after searching for books that would tell me exactly why I'm learning what I am, this one was recommended to me. The author explains how and why designers do what they do, and even has a handwritten design example in the back. I bought the RDS software with this book, and am still figuring it out. If you do get the RDS, don't expect a Windows interface. Think DOS. At least it's not a system hog.

Necessary Starting Point to Understanding Aircraft Design
This is an excellent, and for the time being the authoratative, book about aircraft design. For anyone who wants to become an aerospace engineer reading a book like this should put any type of work they'll do in the proper context.

Ready, Set, Fix
This book was not only very informative, but also a very great read.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down once I started.Quickly I now have the knowledge I need to continue my work on my project boat.I would recommend this to anyone looking to work with an old boat of any kind.True enough, some tricks here will save you money.

Few as good as this one
"Going Faster" is surely one of the best books ever written about the fundamentals of driving.While focusing on handling a car at speed on a track, each of these lessons applies to general handling in all situations.Situational awareness, looking ahead, picking the best line through a corner, understanding the car's grip and why smooth inputs matter so much.Everything is here.
Excelente Libro
Creo que he contado con suerte al seleccionar este libro como mi primer libro sobre conducci�n deportiva. Existen muchos libros que tratan el tema pero me dej� llevar por el buen nombre que tiene la Skip Barber Racing School y creo que hice muy bien. El libro cubre, creo yo, todo lo que en teor�a se deber�a saber a cerca de como correr en un auto de carreras, despu�s del libro s�lo queda poner en pr�ctica todas las cosas que se aprendieron, algo que obviamente es muy complicado, pero por lo menos al haber leido el libro ya te sientes con confianza de que no est�s actuando como un ser irracional al frente del volante de un auto de carreras. Yo aconsejo que lo compren y adem�s si tienen la opci�n de hacer el curso (yo no la tengo) lo hagan, creo que es uno de los m�s completos que hay en el mundo, lo digo porque he investigado el asunto por largo tiempo.

Generally Good, Though Occasionally Off Track
"Commercial Aviation Safety" is a great introductory text for students wanting exposure to most safety considerations in aviation. The book is a well-organized survey, although I only award it four stars because the authors frequently get off-topic into areas only tangentially related to aviation safety.

Could have been better, I think
Well, the fact that I'm writing a review about this book, while it's sitting open on my desk next to my computer, open and not being read, might be some evidence of how I'm enjoying this book. This book just goes on and on in complex an unclear language about a subject which shouldn't be so difficult. This book is not clear or easy to understand at all. Every sentence is awkward and followed by a footnote, and the masses of footnotes together take up half of EACH page (!), making this work look like a research project for a PhD publication. I have the casebook in this series, and sometimes it seems reading the cases alone will bring more clarity. And it turns to be true! This book might be good if you're advanted-contracts and want to know every little detail, or as an advanced reference later on, to look something up like in an encyclopedia. Some concepts, which should be pretty clear just get too in-depth coverage in this book. It's too complex for a first-year student. Sometimes it starts describing the different views out there, and then there's a jumble in your head as to what the law really is. I wish the author used his own knowledge and fluid language more than footnoted ideas from other authors.

Best used as a doorstop.
This book tells you nothing that the U.C.C., Restatement 2nd, and a basic cases and examples book (Farnsworth, for instance) doesn't already tell you.This hornbook, however, is much denser and dryer than these other texts.Surely there must be better study texts out there than this for the first-year Contracts student.

Bible of Boating, but maybe you just need a little prayer.
If you could only buy one book on boating, this would be it, but it's overkill for a beginning recreational boater. The newcomer to boating will get lost in all the detail if he tries to use this as a practical manual. With all the books on boating, it might be better to label this as an intermediate-advanced reference book. Sure, it's got everything, but most weekenders don't need to know everything, just the basics.

an absolute boater's neccessity
Chapmans is the must-have for any boater who wants to do things the right way. I regularly go to this book. Easy to read, organized and practical. A bit big to bring onboard, however.

Unchristian
Dalrymple's 1994 reenactment of the 6th century Christian spiritual journey of John Moschos and Sophronios is fascinating, and its author a compelling writer. There, the value of this book ends.
A book transcending itself
A trip through the Middle-East is most of all getting to know the Muslim world. The part of its' history from Byzantine times, meaning the presence and history of Christian settlements,is easily forgotten or at least figures in the background only. After having read this book the Middle-East will never be the same to me again. With the exception of the Armenian genocide,I was hardly aware of all tragedies which happened but most of all: which are today still happeningto the very old Christian communities of these countries. Not only are they in permanent danger of being killed, often with no punishment of the perpetrators from the authorities, and have they already been driven out of places where they lived since a 1500 years, also their ancient buildings, art, manuscripts, possessions of huge historic meaning, are being destroyed. As these communities and their material heritage represent much of the roots of Western civilization, this loss is a huge loss for the history of mankind. What's going on is a complete annihilation of the wonderful mosaic of different civilizations this world once produced. As since many years but now more than ever the Middle-East is the focus of world politics,"From the Holy Mountain" should be read by a much wider group of people than lovers of good travelogues or lovers of these countries only. A most important and readable study, implicating a plea for tolerance and respect, it should be a must-read for all politicians in the world.
Zeal For Ecclesiastical Arcana
Yes! My title nabbed from the Amazon reviewer. Dalrymple's journey through the middle east, retraces the Byzantine traveller-monlk, John Moschos, author of, The Spiritual Meadow'. In the late C6th, accompanied by his pupil, he set to gather the wisdom of the desert fathers from Mt Athos, to Kurdisatan, then south through Syria, the Lebanon, Palestine, and on up the Nile. Dalrymple's trip in the early 90s was frought with tensions which today would cause an angel trepidation. The book was a revelation to me, filling in considerable gaps about the foundation and correlations of so many parties in the fermenting region. Muslim fundamentlists provide stiff opposition to Dalrymple's historical and current enquiries. But they are not unique in this. His evocation of place is crisply poetic and touched with memorable detail. His feel for people is very sympathetic. A work justly applauded. ... Read more

Essential reading for the GA Instrument pilot
As a CFI I have numerous books in my aviation library. This book details flying in weather and the mindset required to be a safe and competent instrument pilot.
Dealing with the weather
Not a lesson on meteorology; more of a lesson on judgment and decision-making. In other words, how does one deal with the weather? What does one do with the information one has?
"The sky is my office"
It is hard to imagine a pilot with more weather flying experience than Captain Robert Buck. And much of this flying was in the old days: in the early years of the Army Air Corp and a young company called TWA. Much of this flying was accomplished without the assistance of modern instrumentation. Captain Buck travelled the world seeking the most ornery weather he could find, and then flew into it time and time again, compiling the experience and collecting the data that no one else had at the time. Captain Buck shares that experience here. This book is interesting and engaging to the flying enthusiast, essential to the VFR pilot, and absolutely priceless to the aspiring instrument pilot. Wonderful book!
I stumbled upon the 1997 edition of this book at a garage sale for $2.It makes me want to just quit my job and spend the rest of my life trying to check them off, one by one.The photos are so beautiful.The one thing I do wish they had though, was a trip completely mapped out for you based on how long it takes to drive and see everything.In other words, I wish it would say "First day, drive to this place, see this, this, and this.Stay overnight in this town.Second day, drive to this place..." etc.Because even though it tells you how far the drive is, it doesn't really say how long it would take you to visit the various places (obviously everyone is different, but a guideline would be really helpful)

Majestic
The book has so many beautiful pictures of the picturesque places to drive in the US it made me want to jump in the car and go. Well, I did when I was in Massachusetts. I drove on the historic Mohawk Trail on my way to Williamstown, MA and let me tell you how breathtaking it really was. Take your kids on these drives for historical experience that's not only fun but also awe inspired.

By far the most thorough resource on the subject
This is an excellent book for both the new guy and the veteran. At almost 500 pages, this is a very practical book that covers every aspect of truck driving and life on the road. In addition to basic operations, there is also plenty of detailed mechanical info on the inner workings of a truck. That will probably be of more interest to owner-operators than company drivers but it's good to know it's there in case you ever need it.My only complaint is that this book wasn't around when I started out. It definitely would've made for a much smoother transition into the 'industry'. Highly reccomended.

Great book for future Driver
If you have never driven a tractor trailer this is a great book. It covers everything from a drivers perspective. The truck itself including: Engines, Transmissions, Parts, Driving techniques, Hazmat, Airbrakes, Life on the road etc. What it does not cover in great detail is if you want to start your own trucking company, or authority. It touches on parts and mentions the D.O.T and FMCSR but mostly from the drivers interaction with those agencies, not as a trucking company. This book is for drivers behind the wheel on a day to day basis. Non-drivers will find it useful and insightful but if you are wishing to start your own company, It does not cover in detail the authorities you will need and actual details involved in doing so. The book never claims it does cover that information... this review is to let you know what is not in there in that regard. As a future driver, or someone interested in the actual day to day operations or the skills needed to operate a tractor trailer, this book is great and worthy of 5 stars.

not what i expected
i bought this book thinking that it would be a good refrence and guide for doing repairs and maintnence on my79 300d. in reading the reveiws on amazon i got that empresion. not exactly. it is collaberation of articles in a mecedes magazine. yes it may have some helpful info, and some tecnical gudance, but it is not necessarly going to have your spacific problem. if you are lookiing for a complete guide to repairs and maintnece this is not your book.

Wonderful
Even though my model wasn't covered very much, the Companion had a lot of pertinent information. I would recommend it for anyone who has an older Mercedes and likes to do their own work.

Binding Problem Resolved . . great book
I'm writing primarily because I bought this book anyway even though others were warning of the binding.My copy is fine--perhaps they fixed it.
