Good information from very experienced people
It's wonderful to keep this dream alive for those of us with moderate means. I'd recommend this book, along with FitzGerald's Sea-steading, as basic reference volumes for simple sailing.

modern man is loosing his ability to use his own hands
I read this book fifteen years ago, then bought the new edition because someone borrowed my old one. Yup, as the previous reviewer said, the Pardyes have only updated this edition, adding maybe 30 percent new info. But their message is as modern as today. Only by knowing how to get along without al the fancy gadgets can you be have a chance to feel completely in charge of your cruising life. You may never need to get along without your engine, or without your electronics, but if they do fail you will not feel stuck,if you think through what they say.By the way, I happened to go to their website and am amazed at the wonderful life they have made for themselves, a small but grand cruising boat and a boatyard and home in New Zealand that makes a perfect safe haven that I would love to have for my later years.

Outdated
This book is so old it should not be sold anymore.The so called "updates" are simply token and the whole book is too old to be of help. Also, the people are so spartan they really don,t relate to the modern cruiser..ie.. they spend time on the merits of kerosene lights.When they finally retire to land I sure they will end up in a trailer park. ... best advice i've had in along time
having already read this book , I found it was filled with wisdom from the introduction to the very end , being on the water a lot for a living myself this book pointed out some of the more obvious rules of thumb that applytoo mariners.And some very good ones i'd never heard of , but as itstates in the book " good advice is so very hard to come by when itcomes to rules of the ocean , and the black box theory is some thing i willdo my utmost to adhere to as it is all very true done with the witty senceof humor that would appeal to more than most fisherman allthe way toseasoned sailors its a very handy book ,A must for all serious Boaties! ... A 69-year-old mystery is one step closer to being solved

Useless
Do not buy this book.It has absolutely no detail and states only what you can already figure out using common sense.I wanted help replacing the carburetor on my 1989 Honda Accord.The book says to remove hoses, connections and loosen the mounting nuts and lift out the carburetor and then install the new carburetor the same way the old one was installed---that's it.No help with hose diagrams or information about how to disconnect or reconnect anything.Also, the carburetor won't just lift out---it is necessary to loosen the manifold to get the thing out.The book doesn't even mention that.As I said, the book is useless.I wouldn't have given it even one star, but I had no choice.

confusing, no detail.... You cannot wirte a 276 pg book for 10 years worth of 2 different cars...There are no pictures and often little detail on what you are supposed to be looking at...Maybe a good, i mena good mechanic could use this book, but no one else...

Has its moments and applications
I own both the Chilton's manual and the service manual and I use them almost an equal amount when working on my '92 Accord.Yes, the Chilton's doesn't contain as much model-specific information as the service manual, but at times the service manual is too technical and difficult to follow.That's when I turn to the Chilton's manual.IMHO it's well worth the price. ... Instrument Flying
This book is good if you have your instrument rating, but it is not set up for trying to learn the techniques. Most of the book assumes that you know what it is talking about, but it does offer an entire chapter of a glossery. Great for the beginner, Ok for the experienced
When I read this book I was already through with my instrument training, it does contain many great tips and is a very fun quick read.However, I wish I would have read it earlier in my training, the description of the book says it's great for both beginners and experienced but I found it to be written for too large an audience and was left hanging on certain aspects of the book.Overall I did enjoy the book and can see it being of tremendous value to someone who has become rusty, for those that are already sharp this is not a necessary read.

A must read for ALL pilots.
Taylor delivers strongly in this timeless book about IFR flight.Whether you are a strict stick and rudder pilot or a more procedural and technical pilot the author clearly spells out the basic premises of instument flight, from the cockpit to ATC.It should be required reading for all students seeking their instrument rating; it was for me.Please take note: this is NOT a complete guide to IFR flight.Rather it is helpful in understanding and reviewing the basics.This should be one of many books read when getting one's instrument rating or CFII. ... Good Book
This was a good book but out of date on many topics. It is a great all around reference or start-up and go book. I decided I wanted to learn about cars so I found this book at a tag sale and now I know the basics. I wouldsuggest this book for its no-nonsense and in-depth approach.

A must for motoring enthusiasts.
I'm an automotive engineering student and I use this book as a reference. It provides information on virtually everything on or related to a car, tools, brakes, suspensions, fuel systems, just to name a few. Besides that,it also provides service and diagnosis information on every system of thecar it covers. The language used is simple to understand, and yet blendswell with layman's terms. So many errors!!
There are so many errors in this book.Its shameful.If you're a beginner trying to get an understanding of aircraft maneuvers based on gauges, dont bother with this one.It'll have you scratching your head!

Military Flight Aptitude Tests (CliffsTestPrep)
I would definitely recommend this book rather than the Officer Candidate Tests book.There's much more material covered and it gives a more basic overview of what is needed than the OCT book.The OCT book gives a more technical mechanics review that is not needed and doesn't even provide half of what's covered on the AFOQT.

An effective intro to the subject
This is a very good read, for an engineering textbook.It uses a rare combination of technical and historical explanations that holds the reader's interest enough to effectively provide him/her with the basic concepts of the subject it teaches.
Deep text, but good intro book
This book is definitely for serious aero engineering students. Very in-depth, very detailed. Don't expect light material for those who are with no background in some physics, statics and dynamics. Wish it had more examples for working on to better understand concepts, and more illustrations. Interesting book nonetheless.

This Old Boat
Covers everything from dings to diesels.A must read for apprentice boatsmiths.This reading gives you the confidence and knowledge to fix up & repair most every defect in your used boat.

Before you buy that old boat - READ THIS BOOK!
This book is entertaining to read and really is an eye opener as to what you're getting yourself into re wooden boats.Really is a prmer on the topic or Wooden Boats 101 - when you are done reading it you'll know your up to the task or not.

Absolutely a MUST for your boat -- you need this book.
You're familiar of course with the numerous lists of necessary books to have aboard your boat. Boat Owner's comes to mind by Nigel Calder as one. HOWEVER, I believe you will find more useful information within the 408 pages. Also, it's book size (won't be a pain to store aboard) will be welcome.

Top Flight Calder
The book gives you the tech you need, in terms you can understand.Calder is very impressive in his ability to impart knowledge to the layman.Don't however, assume this is just fluff overview, because it truly is the down and dirty of how it works and how to maintain it.

A Cruiser's Engine Atlas
This book provides the reader with a broad overview of most of the basic problems that can occur and offers simple solutions.I have recommended/loaned my copy of this book to several Diesel sailboat owners.The all remarked on how simple their repair was according to the book and how it save them $$.
Know Your Diesel
My copies of this book has grease stained fingerprints throughout. A lot of folks have told me they think this book is redundant, because much of the info is covered in Mr. Calder's Mechanical & Electrical Manual but this smaller book is easier to work with when working around your engine and the material is presented differently enough that the book is one I believe you should have if you live on a boat. ... Worked for me - barely
Bought this manual so that I could do an engine swap in my 97 318ti.Nothing fancy, old engine failed at 192K and I had a salvage one to take it's place, no upgrade here.These cars can be somewhat complicated with a wiring harness that's a complete maze plus a lot of mechanicals shoved in a small area - there is definitely a specific sequence for assembly.The manual was very helpful for some disassembly and reassembly but was very vague in other areas and for specifics to my exact model.Could I have done my work without this manual?Probably, but it would have been more difficult.On the other hand, if I had to rely solely on this manual and not taken lots of pictures and had online assistance from a 318ti group I probably would have been in trouble.I'd probably buy again, but plan on a second or third source for help in any major work.Worth noting that manual does have a lot of info for areas such as sunroof or ragtop, plus many other areas that might present common problems to an owner.Also worth noting that the manual covers nothing on the lower end of any model - if you need to work on pistons or the crank, don't purchase this manual.

Bently's service manuals are one of the best sources of information you can get for your BMW or Porsche. Highly recommend any of their books.

I Built One!
Great book, made the process straightforward and understandable. If you simply follow the steps in the book you will end up with a really good little sports car. If you also incorporate some information from Caroll Smith and Allen Staninforth's books you will have a car that will beat the pants off a Caterham.
This is the beginning
I know how to weld, cut metal design and tune suspensions from scratch adapt junk to something useful the list of things I can do seems endless sometimes. Before I got this book I could do none of these things THIS is the book that gave me the bug which bit me and inspired me to learn to do all these things and to search for knowledge online in books etc. It all began with this book. This book has forced me to take back all my sarcastic cynical remarks about actually building your own car when my wife bought this book for me. It is not a perfect book If it was I wouldnt have learned half of what I do now about suspensions etc since ford cortinas are not sold here But that is part of this books charm its hook is in getting you off your back side and into the pursuit of your own personal sports car. Its been a fantastic ride and I hope you buy a copy too

The title does not exaggerate...
There are two types of 993 owners...the driving enthusiast and the poseur.For the latter group, this book would be a waste of time. For the former, however, this is indeed an "essential companion."Whether the owner's interest in his car is the history, the esoterica of 993 numerology and variation, and/or owner-maintenance and repair, this book covers the ground with alacrity.This is the Porsche equivalent to John Muir's well-known VW book, and as such is an important part of the 993 enthusiast's reference library.

A well written document covering most of the elements a 993'er would be concerned with but a little underwhealming in terms of photos/graphics quality.
