More BS from a "wanna be"....(who could'nt take it...)
After reading this book (and surviving 29 years in the trucking industry) I am greatly inclined to agree with Mr. Pendergast's points of view. Too much is wasted on trying to fit in with a lifestyle that needs to change, not "be adjusted" to. Sweatshops on Wheels was the definitive book on the current "race to the bottom" of the trucking industry. Want poor wages (when you add up your TOTAL time put in) and NO life ? No real health benefeits or pension (if your non-union) ? Then by all means come join us in the trucking industry and completely throw your life away. Everyone TALKS about doing something to help the driver, but as usual nothing is ever done. Truck drivers are STILL the ONLY labor group in the United States NOT covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act. And this book still does'nt address that..

Think Twice Before Becoming a Trucker, Sonny
The author expresses genuine concern for the welfare of those who may be considering a career in what is the modern-day equivalent of indentured servitude. However, after surviving for many years in the trucking biz, I'd advise all but the most desperate job-seekers to steer clear of the cesspool known as over-the-road trucking. Now, if you enjoy being treated like an animal, enjoy being treated like a common criminal, enjoy surviving on a fat-laden junk food diet and enjoy living on 4-5 hours of sleep every day, then by all means, join up.

Good book but missing key information
This book has LOTS of really good information.But it is missing some significant stuff, Brion.PLEASE PLEASE do another addition and include SOME information about the following:
The Thoughts of a REAL RIGGER
As a rigger myself, i thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it most informative and useful for my trade. However, there was little or no mention of brews OR 3 leets - surely this is an integral part of being a RIGGER? Also, there is only one rigger. The only thing like it for traditional craft
Brion Toss has become "da man" in modern rigging in many ways, and a lot of that is attributable to this great book.It's a big, thick thing, loaded with information, not all of it easily absorbed on the first read.It's meant to give you a firm grounding in what rigging is, what it does, and how to inspect and maintain your own rig, how to adjust it, how to replace worn sections.Will it tell you everything you need to know to design a rig from the ground up on a serious racing yacht?Heck, no.It isn't meant to.What this book does is give you the tools you need to approach your own rig without fear and trembling - to realize that, after all, it's just a bunch of parts, and that you can comprehend and work with those parts, understand their roles, and get the most from your boat.Will you be forever independant of professional riggers?Probably not.But it goes a long way toward making that a realizable goal, if you apply yourself.And it should be known that this book is especially strong on traditional rigs, the more traditional the better.You'll learn how to worm, parcel, and serve, how to lace deadeyes, and why galvanized is great and stainless isn't stainless. An overall good book that needs some update and expansion.
Two knowledgable authors gave in-depth treatments on the subject of DCM. The math is fairly easy to follow in most places. The biggest strength is a nice combination of theoretical and practical issues. The readers howevershould be benefitted from a new edition, which should include, among otherthings, extended exposures on ordered responses and grouped/aggregated dataanalyses with DCM. An introduction to the existing software and relevantissues should also be a plus.

Biger and at One Third the Price is Pretty Convincing
Sub-Title: Their Ships, Aircraft, and Systems (Naval Institute Guide to Combat Fleets of the World) ==There are only two books like this published in the world, so it is inevitable that they have to be compared. Jane's Fighting Ships is now in its 107th edition. The Naval Institute's Guide to Combat Fleets has been published every couple of years since 1977. In any case that's enough for both of them to have become established and to have developed a solid background/format/procedure for gathering the information about ships and for publishing it in as accurate a maner as possible. They are both excellent works. Neither is perfect, because some information is difficult to get (The Naval Institute book says: "Data for North Korea are only marginally reliable."), and there is a time lag between freezing the writing and the delivery of the finished product. ==So what is left to compare. They are both huge books, 7+ pounds of paper. The Naval Institute book has about 150 more pages than Janes, and it is about one third the price. Yes, one third of the price, not one third less. ==This book has 1104 pages, 4450 photographs. I also find it easier to read, easier to find what I need to know.

Almost perfect alternative to Jane's Fighting Ships
I bought this book because the price of Jane's Fighting Ships is simply impossible for me and many defence workers. I was very satisfied with this alternative and happy to know that there's an alternative to Jane's at a much cheaper price.

A must read book
It is for the technically minded. Don't buy a propeller without reading it first. And after you've read it, you will probably buy a new propeller, because you will likely to find out that the old one is not right.

Dust Collector
Good intentions but no substance. If you own an outboard, you know that each size and brand are quite unique and generalizing the repairs of them is about as useful to an owner as a dry lake. This book is very small and it WILL collect dust or end up beneath a repair manual. Believe me.

Excellent overview- but buy the service manual too
This book provides a thorough explanation of the workings of 2-stroke & 4-stroke outboard engines, with conscientious troubleshooting guides & meticulous maintenance schedules.However, it works best as a companion to the service manual (not the general Owners Manual, but the Service Manual) for your specific model.Consider the number of outboard engine types and it's easy to see that diagrams and descriptions included are necessarily generic.If you're the kind of person who likes to know the theory behind the black box before fixing anything, order this & the manual.If you just want to learn how to clean your carburetor, call your manufacturer & get the manual.

Great info for 99% of outboard owners
I'm not quite sure what the reviewer from Raleigh, N.C. expected from this book. It is clearly not written with the intent of teaching you how to tear down and rebuild outboard motors. The editor's review above clearly says that. But If you are looking for a good common sense all-round outboard motor troubleshooting guide, then this book, combined with the specific shop manual for your motor, some moderately cheap test equipment (which you may have a lot of already) and anyone with a descent mechanical aptitude will probably be able to fix 90% of all the problems they will ever encounter with an outboard motor. The other 10% I personally will leave to the pros. It will also teach you how to avoid a lot of problems in the first place which is the biggest savings when your talking outboards. I am just a hobbyist, not a mechanic and this book has already helped me get two old motors back up and running and has been well worth its price to me. The book is well organized and is easy to understand. The author keeps things simple and down to earth and isn't trying to impress anyone with a bunch of techno-jargon. Sure the text could have been larger, maybe the pictures a little better, but hey what's perfect for everyone? ... Read more

Good Resource
I purchased this book after I read the other reviews.Some of them were not as good as others.I have long been a fan of Flight Simulator and I have purchased all the hints book to go along with each one.I found this book to be a great resource and I have used it daily.

"What does 'rky' mean? Oops!"
Since the current U.S. Administration saw fit to cease publication of CHART NO. 1, the government's own guide to reading maritime maps, back in 2000 (maybe they figured Dubai might pick up the slack around our harbors), HOW TO READ A NAUTICAL CHART is an absolutely crucial educational volume for those of us new to reading charts.
Nigel is among the most informative

Highly Recommended!
James Wynbrandt has penned a well-researched, colorful account of the life and guiding principles of commercial aviation pioneer David Neeleman. The book is written in a clear, straightforward style, and offers insights into what made discount carrier JetBlue an unlikely success. The book appears, however, to reflect Neeleman's artful capacity for generating positive publicity for himself. While this is not exactly a hagiography, once you have read it, you may well envision a halo floating above Neeleman's portrait on the book's jacket. Then again, as Muhammad Ali once said, "If you can do it, it ain't braggin'." Certainly, Neeleman's accomplishments rocked the commercial aviation industry, encouraging the major carriers to launch value-based alternatives such as Ted and Song.We recommend this book to professionals seeking useful ideas to help their businesses gain altitude.

Attitude Is Altitude
This really isn't a biography of David Neeleman (pronounced "Neel-Mun"). Rather, Wyndbrant carefully integrates relevant information from both Neeleman's life and his career to explain JetBlue's success to date. Neeleman would be the first to point out that, in the airline industry (de-regulated since October 28, 1978), it is a fool's errand to predict which airlines today are totally secure and which are doomed. All airlines have problems which vary only in nature and degree. However, JetBlue is probably in better shape than most others are even as Neeleman explains that how it can become better while becoming larger "is the question that we're wrestling with at JetBlue, and I think it's something that we focus on a lot." He adds, "I believe we are going to be able to...have a thriving, prosperous company, that we're setting the standard in what we're doing in customer service, and that we'll continue to grow in the future."

A great book with the right stuff.
I've read Corky Bell's "Maximum Boost" and this new book by Warner is far superior.Where Bell includes a lot of personal opinion and unsubstantiated information, Warner sticks completely to the facts.Better yet, Warner's book is much more up-to-date, with current information on components, EFI, and tuning.It's a model of clear and precise writing.Anyone seriously interested in turbocharger systems should get this book.

Excelent for learning about the turbos with the last information available
I think that this book is meaby the best in the market in the Turbo Area that it is selling today , and if you add that is was release anly at june 2006 , you can notice that it have the last information available in the tech area.

A delightful read
This was a book that I bought in a bargain section and it turned out to be quite the bargain. It is a heart-warming tale with adventure and humor for everyone. The language at times was a little much and for this reason I would not recommend to young children. I don't think the author was necessarily attempting to make this book a comedy but he had me in stitches several times. I don't usually re-read books but this is one that I am looking forward to reading again and again in years to come.

Mixed feelings
The experience of two teenagers flying coast-to-coast is an exciting tale that deserves to be told.As long as the storyline focuses on the actual travel adventure, it makes for an interesting read.On the flipside, the author's lengthy description of his rather dysfunctional family situation gets tiresome before long.From a pilot's perspective I hope that the irresponsible, at times outright dangerous acts described in the book will not encourage the next generation of flyers to follow suit.Sadly, the book's supposed highlight, crossing the Rockies between two mountain peaks at high altitude in gusty wind conditions is the result of a blatant navigational error.By diverting 10 miles to the south and to lower terrain, this dangerous situation could have been avoided altogether...

If you come from a flying family, you'll love this book!
With a father, three brothers, two sisters-in-law, a niece, and several nephews who fly or have flown or soloed, and a few hours toward soloing myself, this book had instant appeal for me. Brother Jim's wife, Chris, recommended it to me and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Rinker Buck does a grand job of telling his story; the whole story not just the mind-boggling, spectacular flight across the country he and his brother, Kern, took as teenagers. The book is well written; easy and absorbing to read. This is not a book you will want to read quickly. I have not finished it and am in no hurry to do so. The story is to be savored; parts read and re-read. There are some photographs included which always adds to the appeal of a story about real people. (Two of my brothers soloed at 16. With a ten-year age difference between them, the older one soloed the younger one. It made all the local papers.)

Correction for earlier posted review
My review of "Traffic and Highway Engineering" posted March 31, 2003 was mistakenly attached to this Newer "Revised" Edition of the text.The original review, for an earlier version-ISBN: 0534387438, was left while I was an undergraduate student of West Virginia University's Civil Engineering program.
Very comprehensive and well written
As the transportation professor at West Virginia University, I take issue with the review from Braxton Lewis (one of my former students).This book does not have errors and we have been using it at West Virginia University for 12 years and will continue to do so.

very little info for 65
if you have a older ford truck pass this book up.no info worth Gearheads, grease-monkeys and grannies unite!
So I'm covered in mud and (ouch) gravel--funny how those sharp stones can really stick to your skin. Anyway, I'm trying to resurect a half-dead 1965 Ford Pick up by myself, with very few tools. I'm what I'd consider mildlymechanically competent, but with the time honored tradition of ChiltonManuals I've managed to work on my own cars with very good results. Forolder vehicles you'll also want to get the original manual (usually not toohard to find.)Chances are if you're looking at this book you're alreadycomfortable working on your own vehicle, but on the off chance that you'rea novice, consider this. Getting comfortable with working on your ownvehicle and getting to know your vehicle is the best thing you can do. Itsaves you money in the long run and you'll feel empowered when you gap yourown spark plugs for the first time. GPS Book
I belive this book is just a little more them a book for dummies. I still don't think I picked the right book for me. I still feel like I am in the dark.
Great Book for beginners and advanced users
Tons of good information to get started with using a GPS, goes beyond the basics. Really a very good starter book. Once you get this book, I would also recomend "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Geocaching" and the Owing's "GPS Mapping". With GPS for Dummies and my Garmins 60CS manual, I was able to hit the trail in a few hours. With the other books as complement, I have become very accurate locating waypoints when I do horse riding or 4x4 trips.

Not for outdoor beginners
This book sends people out in the field with a GPS but without the knowledge of whatto do when the batteries die or the electronics fail (it happens!). If you really are a "dummy," you should also learn the basics of navigation before relying on an electronic device that can leave you stranded. Better choices that are very readable: The Land Navigation Handbook (new edition includes GPS info) and Wilderness Navigation (less detailed). ... Read more

Disappointing
I waited thirty years for this book to be written. After experiencing Anatomy of a Ship's H.M.S. Pandora and Victory I was beside myself with excitment in anticipation of an in-depth disection of Constitution. Woa, was I ever disapointed. Anatomy of a Ship series hit a nadir with this publication. Compared to Victory and Pandora the scope of the drawings is limited and are not to a constant scale. Details are bunched and difficult to seperate when searching the adjacent captioning. Several drawing legends were arranged backwards, the numbers ascended from from one side of the page but the actual legends ascended from the opposite side, lots of hunting. Spelling is inconsistant "Mizzen" being the most frequent error. How much faith can one place in the natutical background, and hence, accuracy of a document when the author lables ladders as "Stairs" the ship's wheel as a "Steering Wheel" and mis-spells "Mizzen" as "Mizen"? Two photographs are grossly mis-captioned too. The history of the ship represents the typical "sanitized" version generated by government agencies, great for a dim public entralled by a steady diet of reality TV programs but not much accurate substance is presented. All in all this book is a typical example of what you can accomplish with a computer and the desire to make a quick buck over providing a product whose quality is consistent with the previous efforts of this series. Excellent Detailed History of "Old Ironsides"- A Difinitive Anatomy...
...NOT a novel.If you're looking for a romantic history--this is not the book you want.If you want a factual historical account with highly detailed drawings about all the many "restorations" of this ship--this book isexcellent.I just purchased a 3.5 foot long model of the USS Constitution and I was curious as to it's accuracy--that's why I purchased this book.I'm not a nautical expert--but after seeing the many changes this ship (see? I said "ship" not BOAT:) has gone through,it made me want to find out more about the naval history of our country---and others.Did you know that the USS Constituion was not the first naval frigatelaunched by our young nation? It was actuallythe third (see page 8 of this book and verified in other books I've since read as well).I'm wondering if I should tell you the name of our country's first REAL fighting frigate (the largest fighting ship (44 guns)we had as a young nation).Read the book for the answer!This book containsmany diagrams, photos, and makes you appreciate just how precious this wonderful real bit of history to us as a nation.The USS Constitution is STILL the oldest official ship of any nationwhich can still sail on it's own .The USS Constellation in Baltimore is NOT the same Constellation launchedas the 5th of 6 completed vessels in 1797.The Constellation, although still a wonderful part of our heritage, was actually launched in 1851 after the other ship was dismantled.It is a much smaller vessel andhas no parts of the original frigate of 1797.The HMS Victory, which I also have a large model of, is largerbut it is in permanent 'drydock' (meaning it is kept out of water) and belongs to our former "enemy" of the AmericanRevolution-- now our closest partner andfriend,Great Britain (UK).

This is the bible for maintenance and repair on the 7 Series E32 BMW.
Good book, wrong car on the cover.
With all research Bentley does to make a wonderful repair manual, why couldn't they put the right car on the cover?The car on the cover is a 7 from 1997-2003.

Robert Bently Always makes great repair manuals.
