Very thorough, if a bit redundant
Shoup makes a subject that at first glance would sound boring, quite interesting.The only downside is that he gets a bit repetetive; the book probabaly could have been cut about 150 pages.Still, it's a very valuable resource for any planner or elected official who cares about the health of our cities.The only thing missing is some discussion on how parking immensely increases impervious surface in an area, impacting water quality and supply.

Excellent analysis, ahead of its time
In 100 years, people will look back on this book and realize its value.For now, though, it's far too rational to be of much practical use to planners, engineers or politicians.For anyone who ever imagined that parking requirements were established in accordance with scientific criteria, The High Cost of Free Parking should disabuse them of that notion permanently.Shoup recognizes all too well that parking requirements are imposed merely as a knee-jerk reaction to public fears rather than as a practicable solution to an actual problem.His solutions, though well intended, will undoubtedly fall on deaf ears in most instances--until the price of gas is at $30 per gallon and suddenly there are no cars to fill those free parking lots anymore.

A solution to parking problems and traffic congestion
This book is a detailed analysis of parking problems and their solution.Shoup zeroes in on the reason for such problems: we assume that parking should be free.Shoup points out that if we decided that gasoline should be free, the result we would expect would be obvious: people would drive too much, shortages of gasoline would develop, fights would break out over scarce gas, and governments would go broke trying to pay for it all.Shoup shows that parking is no different.Providing free parking leads to overuse, shortages, and conflicts over parking.Cash-strapped local governments and neighborhoods lose out, too.Free parking is like a fertility drug for cars.Many people don't realize how much of the high price of housing is due to requirements by local governments that a certain number of parking spaces must be provided.These costs are paid by everyone, including those who don't own a car.

The Best Generalist's Book On Classic Cars
No book is perfect for the collector, but this is probably the best for car collectors.With over 1000 of the world's finest models, from over 200 marques, it has certainly captured the best amongst its pages.It also has some strange picks, but it doesn't claim to only list the top cars.And the world doesn't start in 1945 for this author, his team goes back as far as 1891 for their car selections. Excellent colour photos, with some B/W.Godd source of information on cars from the 1930s.With over 500 pages, this is a big book in all dimensions.Great value. ... Read more

The book is organized by chapters which guide you through buying an RV or camper to where to stay, how to pack, what to purchase for multiple uses, how to add storage and organize, and many many more tips.The authors are well qualified for writing this and their other books listed below. They have spent years living in their RV six months in Canada and six months in the United States each year. RV Living in the 21st Century
I enjoyed reading this RV book. I found it to be easy reading and presented in an easy to digest format. The security tips for your house while you are away and health & safety tips are just a couple of subjects out of many, that are invaluable and give you peace of mind! I have been RVing for years and even learned things I hadn't come across before. I am really impressed that another woman RVer knows so much about the systems of an RV and among other things knows how to actually dump the holding tanks. After reading this book you will also know how! One of the most important and overlooked subjects about your RV are the weight issues involved. Peggi gives information about where and how to weigh your RV and terminology involved this includes motorized and towables. Radial engine lover's dream
I have been facinated with the R-4360 since I built a B-36 model while in grade school.I did get to see and hear one C-124 depart Lajes AB, Azores while in the USAF. What a sound!
Graham White does it again!
After enjoying Graham White's prodigious tome on the P&W R-2800, I was pleased to see another volume released, this time on the R-4360.Mr. White must have access to a tremendous archive of information, because both these books provide a level of detail that can satisfy the most discerning aviation buff.He is also able to describe the various engine systems in a way that does not overwhelm the reader with technical minutiae, something most engineers would be incapable of doing.
ALabor of Love
Reading this excellent book makes it apparent that Mr. White has a great interest in aircraft engines, especially the R-4360. He covers the subject well although I would have liked a little more insight into the development and manufacturing process (and maybe a little less on landing gear design). I flew about 800 hours behind these engines on the KC-97 and we referred to them simply as the "Corncob", a term of endearance from a pilot's viewpoint, but not so from his observation. It was a finely tuned machine and stood up well to the punishment we gave them in SAC Air Refueling operations. The illustrations are profuse, large and well detailed and the printing and paper content are excellent. If your intrest is radial aircraft engines, the book is a "must read". ... Read more

Not for the converted
A fine little book, but not for anyone who has already decided to take the step to become carless or car-lite. This book is 10% manual, made up mostly of common sense ideas (never a bad thing), and 90% arguments and statistics meant to convince you to go car free. If you're on the fence about giving up your ride, this is a great read. If you're looking for a book about the experience of being car free or a good instruction manual on doing so, maybe not the way to go. An interesting little read, though.

A book ahead of its time!
This is a tremendous, hard hitting work on many, many levels. Above all, Balish's appeal for freeing ourselves from the tyranny of our automobiles will resonate with a wide readership - those wishing to save money, (LOTS of money), those wanting to simplify their lives, and those wishing to build a more sustainable future.
A book for the times
How to Live Well Without Owning a Car is a book whose time has come.Cast off the chains of car ownership! Chris Balish does an excellent job on the economics of car ownership.He also goes step by step on the nuts and bolts of a car-free life, covering not only the expected (like getting to work and getting your groceries) but also dating and vacationing.This bookis a wonderful resource for anyone who is seriously thinking of living without a car. But there are many people who are just playing with the idea, and it is those people for whom I will be buying the book.Chris has a light touch when he talks about the lifestyle choices that keep people tied to the economic millstone that is car ownership.We choose to live on a bus line or not, we choose to work far from home, we choose to set our lives up so we have to buy things every day rather than plan.I have to laugh as I read my words - as a recent convert to a car-free life, I tend to beat people up with these ideas!Chris makes those points in an easy, non-confrontational way.This is a great book.

Good but dated
A great introduction to human factors but it shows its age in its focus, its examples, and its recommendations.Nevertheless, this book makes a good starting point.

For the CRM specialist, or those with a keen interest
If you are in senior airline management and are wondering why things happen the way they happen and you really can't figure out why, this book might provide some help. It's the first step towards understanding the human impact in airline operations, be that pilots, cabin crew or ground crews. Far from being an expert in the field I think this work provides great background material, probably to be better understood when you hold a degree in psychology, but also readable for the un-initiated like myself. CRM specialists/trainers, Human Resource Managers etc. should have this book on their shelv(es). ... Read more

Just the facts
Style wise, this is the opposite of The Sailmaker's Apprentice by Marino. This is not a book to pick up while sitting by the fire sipping tea. It is a great reference book with concise "how to" information. I have a friend who told me that there is nothing beyand repair on a fiberglass boat. After reading this book, I'm beginning to belive him. Good explanations of both materials and techniques - including safety.

Go ahead and get the grinder!
A sweet book that gave me the confidence to 'go for it' and tackle some ugly holes in my dinghy hull. What's more it was not that bad after all!It's all here, from finishing the gelcoat scrapes/cracks to repairing gaping holes- you may want to buy in conjunction with 'sailboat refinishing' to help with that final effort. Fully recommended!

Good advice

If History Class was like this...
I would not go so far as to say I hated history in school, but it was far from my favorite subject. As I read Longitude I found myself wanting to search out more information and explore the people and science on my own. Heck, if Dava Sobel had been writing our text books, I might have been a history major.I would reccommend Longitude to any and everyone - the budding history scholar, the salty old sailor, the astronomy buff or the normal joe looking for a good read.The science is approachable, the history intriguing and the story of Harrison's drive and determination inspiring.I would especially reccommend the edition with the plates showing the actual clocks/watches built by Harrison. ... An unfortunate Perspective
A good, thorough analysis. It's unfortunate that the author(s) felt it unavoidable that they should fill the book with Christian propaganda. It really took away from the objectivity.

Solid but not Spectacular
"Comm Check..." tells the story of the loss of the space shuttle Columbia.If you are expecting a top-level, academic analysis, like the one found in Diane Vaughan's "The Challenger Launch Decision", then this book is not for you.It is a well written book with lots of human interest anecdotes about the people and the organizations involved in the tragedy. It is factual and reasonably well organized but is written with a sense of drama that I found both distracting and unnecessary.At times, the continual stream of mini-biographies made it hard to follow the book's main theme.While interesting, I gained little from the litany of who went to which school and who had flown so-many thousands of hours in jet fighters.Even the the climactic chapter "Re-Entry Revisited" was light duty in terms of the technical information and overly dramatized events from the astronauts perspective.

Being a space nut, and being very impacted by the Columbia disaster, this book was exactly what I was looking for.

A good book
The book is very precise and gives a lot of mathematical related things that's relevant to Navigation and Guidance. I somehow liked it's approach, mainly because it avoids a lot of descriptory jargons and talks straight in mathematics: the language of scientists and engineers! Before reading the book, a good hold of the mathematics related to linear system theory would be a definite plus, even though the it has an introductory chapter for the related mathematics.

Don't Read This Great Sea Story- LISTEN INSTEAD
I listened to the CD version of Simple Courage.Other reviewers have deducted marks for the book's length and author's personal narrative.None of that mars the audio version.LISTEN to the CD.It's been expertly abridged by Kristin Lesko into a tight, taut, compelling story.Frank Delaney is an absolutely OUTSTANDING reader/narrator (a long prior career at the BBC probably helped).I begrudged every moment it took to eject the finished CDs and spin up the new ones.

Uses historical documents and modern accounts to spice true adventure.
Frank Delaney's SIMPLE COURAGE: A TRUE STORY OF PERIL ON THE SEA tells of a 1951 ship laden with passengers and tons of cargo heading from Europe to America which faced huge waves which about destroyed her. Zaggats of cruising
I am not a world cruiser and have only ventured a few miles from shore and then not too far from the other side of the sound within which we sail every summer.This book was a disappointment.It is basically a distillation of the periodic surveys the author conducts of people who cruise in small yachts either on their own or as part of an offshore rally such as the ARC.The problem for me is that the book amounts to a collection of advice, not from people who necessarily know that much about cruising, but instead from those it was convenient for Cornell to interview.It's like a Zaggat guide, filled with lots of pepole's opinions but not necessarily people who know anything about food.Frankly, I don't know enough to judge whether this interviewees ideas are right on, or that interviewees ideas are nonsense-- that's not my point.I was looking for a single authoritative voice, not a report on what a collection of people with the funds and gumption to cross oceans happen to believe.This one is going back.

Excellent source of information
Cornell offers his own viewpoints as well as those of others, does a good job of labeling facts vs. options, and answers a lot of questions I had about cruising. Safety equipment, storms, piracy, dangerous areas, firearms, and communications are all covered well. Common equipment failures are given, along with statistics to back them up. Great read, but a bit thin in critical areas
This is a very entertainingly written book, essential for anyone restoring a wooden boat - worth it as a fun read alone.The book is full of fun wooden boat philosophy, interesting personal anecdotes, and great stories.On the practical side, the author provides a good introduction to wooden boat types and construction, excellent information about selecting, evaluating and purchasing a boat for rennovation; planning and initiating projects; necessary tools and supplies; repairing holes in a wooden hull; and even some tips about building in cabinets and furniture.

I found the book both entertaining and very useful.
Decent info - but proceed with caution.
The previous reviews touch on the good points of this book, so I won't bother to repeat these.Suffice to say, there's plenty of good info to be had from this book.I would however express one word of caution.It has to do with the author's tendancy to push the reader toward approaches and methods that may not be appropriate for boats with truly historic or aesthetic value.Mr. Trefethen makes no bones about the fact that he wants to get the boat back in the water ASAP and minimize maintenance.To use his own words, "authenticity be damned".

The best in its area
This is a rather complete presentation of the knowledge of controls and dynamics needed to design, specify, and analyze spacecraft control sytems.No navigation or guidance is covered.Of course no reference to same is made in the title.The book is primarily a composition of basic control background including modern topics like H-infinity.The H-infinity control discussion is the most understandable out there and its limitations are spelled out clearly, perhaps for the first time.The structural dynamics and controls sections are outstanding with some novelty.Interleaving is not unique to this book, however.Bryson covers it in Control of Spacecraft and Aircraft.Quite frankly, at this point in time most of the spacecraft controller design methodologies are handbook in nature and what is most needed is a good background in the basics that extends into the actual design domain enough to be useful.Bong Wie has provided that in this book for controller design to a greater extend than any other written thus far.

A great addition to the literature
Bong Wie's "Space Vehicle Dynamics and Control" is, by far, one of the best books ever published in the AIAA Education Series. It packs a lot ofinfo on a multitude of subjects which don't usually come togetherin a single book. The mathematical preliminaries and the sections ondynamics and control of flexible structures are particularly well done.(This is perhaps the first time a textbook covers the interlacing propertyof poles & zeros of certain transfer functions, particularly thoseassociated with flexible structures.) In addition, the inclusion of the"H-infinity" topic the way the author did it is very good since,in general, books do not feature the subject in such a concise, objective,useful way. The same is true of the section on halo orbits, as well. Bestof all, Wie's having included Kharitonov's theorem comes as a blessing,since the issue is rarely seen in non-European texts.Read more

There Is No Better Reference for the T3
No better manual exists for the Type2(T3) Vanagon. Like others here, I feel the negative reviews need to be addressed for their incorrect assumptions regarding what a Factory Repair Manual is.
Note to "Do-It-Yourselfers"
Let's get something straight right off the bat about this manual, it's the Factory Repair Manual, originally intended for mechanics at the dealership. It assumes you are experienced and already know which end of a screwdriver works. Its not going to teach you 'how' to work on your Vanagon, it's the 'bible' on the repair procedures on for your Vanagon. I suspect the negative reviews for this manual are mostly from 'newbies' and novices. What this manual is most useful for is the factory approved method for servicing your Vanagon, not "Auto Mechanics 101'. So if you're looking for a manual to teach you how to work on your Vanagon, THIS IS NOT IT! On the other hand, if you looking for a manual that explains the factory approved method of working on your Vanagon, with all the necessary details and specifications, "BINGO". Naturally, its a translation of a German manual so you have to take that into account too, a translation is only as good as the translator, trust me, I work for a German company in their US plant and this is a very common problem. So be warned about what you're getting if you order this manual.

Essential for the mechanic
This book is a bible for the mechanic.I found information here that helped me fix starter, ignition, valve and fuel injection problems (this reference manual is considered essential in vanagon discussion groups).Whoever says the information is wrong or incomplete has their heads somewhere other than on their shoulders.As mentioned in another review, the only (less than minor) drawback is the lack of an index which would help considerably with troubleshooting a problem.Of course with that addition the book would probably become even more expensive than it already is.My major complaint is with the ridiculous prices of all Bentley products.A simple fuel injector costs more now than my first vanagon did years ago, which is even more astounding when you consider that a fuel injector involves about the same electronics wizardry as a $.35 light switch. ... Excellent Book!
This was by far the best book that I've read on owning a boat and living aboard (and we've even been passed it around the marina).This book was a great resource and was worth much than its cost.Very highly recommended!

More like how to live aboard a barge.
Unfortuately, the book seems to be written much from an RV or houseboat mentality. The major factor in a choice to live aboard a boat is expense, or at least I gather from this read. Much more useful is anything by the Pardeys--always useful classics, or more recently FitzGeralds "Sea-Steading"

Really Helpful
This book far exceeded all of our expectations.If you want a book on living aboard while underway or even just cruising, get another book (like the Pardey book).But the author says that himself in the first chapter.Living aboard is just about living aboard, perhaps even right at the dock.If you already know all this, then find another book.On the other hand, my husband Will and I think that this is the most helpful boating book we've ever read. ...
