Excellent collection
I am sure everyone is aware that Scene of the Crime is not the first collection of police archive photos to be released. The past few years have seen the release of many collections of such photos; the most well known being New York Noir, Evidence and Death Scenes.New York Noir and Death Scenes have a common thread in their use of well-known writers in their introductions. Luc Sante the noted New York historian collected the photographs for Evidence and penned the introduction for New York Noir.Katherine Dunne, the author of Geek Love is responsible for the intro to Death Scenes. Scene of the Crime follows that tradition; drafting the modern master of Los Angeles noir, James Ellroy, to pen the introduction to this collection of archival Los Angeles crime photos.Much as Luc Sante was the ideal choice for New York Noir, Ellroy is perfect for this collection of photographs from the city that has been his muse.
Good but not great
Scene of the Crime was a bit disapointing due to the fact that the readr must go back and forth from the photos, to the captions, which are compiled at the end.Quite a few of the cases have no information available at all, as the other reviewers have mentioned, and although the LAPD has done a great job maintaining paper on most of these cases, some details are bound to slip through the cracks.
LAPD Scene Of The Crime (captions)
Just a note on other reviews in regard to the lack of captions. The LAPD negatives are not kept with the case files. There are very few case files even available, as they have been destroyed due to lack of space. There is a normal descruction process within the LAPD for paper files. he who owns the past owns the future-big brother
this book is quite possibly the biggest load of bs ive ever read in my life!well maybe not there was that one about hayzues.anyway,this is the guy who put away charlie manson's story of the events surrounding the killings supposedly carried out by the manson family.all im saying is ive never seen a more one sided,no win situation as his court trial.he was busted from day one and everyone knew it.not because they had a good motive and solid evidence but because they needed someone to pin all this on.illquote now from bob dylan........"it makes me ashamed to live in a land where justice is a game".whats more they had very weak physical evidence also.the book is very biased ,very long and detailed and extremely violent.ill leave the rest up to you but a quote by napoleon might better express how i feel "what is history but an agreed upon past?"the past is written by the victor and thats painfully true here.i mean did the beatles ever make you want to kill?come on!drop acid maybe,protest is possible,having unprotected sex with people you dont even know-of course..............but murder?get real!

Told by the man who put Manson away!
Vincent Bugliosi makes no apology for wanting the Manson women to remain in prison for the rest of their lives. But I have seen that these women who were young once, made the mistake of following a madman. While they will probably remain in prison in California, they have done everything to reform their lives and have cut themselves from Charlie Manson's ways. The man, Charlie Manson, is an animal and there is no doubt about that. He doesn't know anything other than to live in a prison. IT's sad but I feel that his women suffered along with the murdered victims and I know that people are going to criticize me for it and even hate me for siding with the Manson women. Luckily, they are still alive rather than executed like originally. Manson stole their minds and ruined their lives. I know 36 years is a long time in prison but I see that they have changed behind prison walls and have become role models for younger prisoners. there is no excuse for their crimes, they admit it, confess to it, and apologize for their crime. But you wonder why other criminals get less for the same crimes. I am sure that forgiveness, compassion and understanding is possible but I worry about if they are released and the vigilante justice. ... Read more

Thanks to the missing .75 cents...
We get an incredibly engaging page-turner of an astronomer/system manager tracking down a foreign hacker. Cliff Stoll genuinely struggles and questions his own actions not knowing whether he is doggedly tracing some hapless student or a nefarious spy. In the end he overcomes his Berkeley counterculture distrust of all those three letter gov't agencies and develops a respect for their work if not their inability to coordinate or communicate interdepartmentally. He becomes a security expert they all seek but laments the lack of openness and the attack on trust that is required in the academic world in order to facilitate networking and the exchange of ideas. A really good story and there is a pretty good recipe for chocolate cookies on page 155.

Nice reading with good technical coverage
"The Cuckoo's Egg" is a good book on computer hacking and espionage . It covers well all technical aspects involved in the case, stuff like UNIX, Tymnet and the very begining of system cracking.

To Jane Jones "Jane"
In real life Henry Hill had a son and a daughter. In the book wise guy they wanted to protect Henry's children so they didnt tell the truth about Henry having a son and daughter.

Confused! Help!
I have seen Goodfellas many times and just started reading this book after I finished "On the Run" written by Henry's kids. I like it so far, but there is conflicting info in the two books. Pileggi claims that Hill had two daughters, Judy and Ruth. They seem to be portrayed in the movie as well. "On the Run," however was written by Henry's son, "Gregg" and daughter, "Gina." Which is accurate? Did he have two daughters or a son and a daughter? I like both books, but am confused by the different accounts.

No sympathy for Henry Hill
I read this book and watched 'Goodfellas'.This guy got protection from the government after years of involvement in organized crime, profitted from ill-gotten gain, bragged about all the beautiful stolen goods he and his wife had in their closets and jewelry boxes,expressed outright contempt for people like his own father who made an honest living, and has the unmitigated GALL to whine about his supposed diminished fortune at the end of the book (a salary of $100,000 and a decent house sounds pretty good to me!).Give me a royal break!He got off a lot easier than a lot of other criminals (including people of color) who did lesser offenses.

This thoughtful and interesting book showed that this medical examiner stands above the others.More people should have listened to his evidence in the O. J. Simpson case. In case after case, his careful examinations brought justice where others had failed. Baden is a giant in hsi profession.

Medici Conspiracy is amazing!
The Medici Conspiracy by Peter Watson is an amazing account, thoroughly researched, beautifully written, with marvelous photographs.It is literally a fascinating mystery, revealed and solved.I applaud the Italians and commend Oscar White Muscarella for his life-long good fight.

A classic of the genre
After fifteen years in publication this book "The Westies" still holds its power. I read it when it came out and was blown away. Reading it again years later I am still impressed with the intimacy and also the historical framework for the story. The book has aged like fine Irish whiskey. Combine"The Westies" together with "Paddy Whacked," another book by T.J. English, and you have the full story of the Irish American gangster that puts these TV shows like "Brotherhood" and "Black Donnellys" to shame.

Interesting but disjointed
Westies is a very interesting book about the so-called Hell's Kitchen "Irish Mob."As true crime and mob books go, it's good.English does a nice job of holding the reader's attention with lots of (often gory) details seemingly gleened from first-hand accounts.Although violent, the book is entertaining -- much like mob movies -- and a quick read.

I received this book almost right away.It's a very good summary of the people of Las Vegas written by someone who knows, John Smith.

An excellent read and a superb history lesson
With "Sharks in the Desert" John L. Smith wrote one of the best books about Las Vegas ever. This book has a lot of substance and it is full of information. Although it's nonfiction, it reads like a novel. Lots of valuable quality research are packed into the 400 pages. Although we have seen the TV specials about Las Vegas history, it was so refreshing to read John's book -- this is a great read from the first page to the last. The reader learns about today's casino moguls and the harsh but real techniques to separate casino patrons from their money. It also tells the story how like a gigantic masterplan Las Vegas rose from the barren desert into today's Sodom and Gomorrah. Smith is excellent in telling it like it is and this book is a great educational tool for anyone who wants learn more about the meadows, i.e. Las Vegas, and the people who developed this desert oasis in the past and who run this town like clockwork presently. ... Great read
New Yorkers think of the Five Families as the focus of the Mafia in the U.S. But this book shows how Vito Rizzuto deserves to be considered one of the major reputed mob bosses of our era. The authors did a magnificent job of researching, even traveling to Sicily, and wrote it in a way that pulls the reader along. A book that any crime enthusiast will love. Avid Mafia fans must have it.

A long wait but worth it
It took a long time to get ahold this book. But it was worth the wait. Unlike most books on organized crime, The Sixth Family concentrates on how criminals work but also why their so powerful.

The writing in this book was not good the author jumped around alot and said very little about vito rizzuto and if you know anything about the bonnano crime family you have already heard what is written in this book very poor i suggest The Last Godfather a much better book ... Read more

The Rise & Fall Of Larry Legend
Larry Lavin seemingly had it all in the 9-to-5 world; an Ivy League education that led to a growing dental practice, a wife and children living in a tony neighborhood of old money and a business savvy that couldn't be learned in graduate school.
Just the facts...no cohesive hook
Mark Bowden's heritage as a journalist shows in this book.He goes into precise detail about Larry Lavin's (the dealer) life.The characters drift in and out of Larry's life just as people do in yours.After a while, I lost interest in keeping track who was who.I read about a third of the book before I stopped.
Confused?
I'm in the middle of reading this book and am slightly confused. I am doing a report on George Jung for American History, and while researching him I found a link to this book. In reading the first page of the book it tells that the events and story are true- just that the names have been changed. The description on the cover, "The Rise and Fall of an All-American Boy and His Multimillion-Dollar Cocaine Empire" even describes George Jung. a true eye opener for personal safety
I think what I took away from reading this book was really a lesson in personal safety. I found myself really paying attention to everything going on around me and walking a little bit taller. This isn't for everyone but I found it a critical read living and working in the city at night. I actually was able to identify a bad scene unfolding in front of me and got my feet moving to avoid it. John Douglas presents the facts in a non-alarmist way while still putting great emphasis on what bad dudes are all about. This is a must read for anyone in law enforcement and anyone who likes to gain power through knowledge.

Good insights into human nature
This was a very interesting book describing the rise of criminal profiling in the F.B.I.John Douglas pioneered the combination of psychology and crimaal catching which has become so popular today, especially since Thomas Harris' Silence of the Lambs, which showed the public how this new science works (in an exaggerated form, of course).This book details how that science developed, what it's benefits are, and why it should be used, but unfortunately Mr. Douglas doesn't really tell us a whole lot about how exactly it works.He looks at case files, examines autopsy reports, then comes up with a profile of the killer.All of the cases he records in this book are cases he got right (one wonders how many he has gotten wrong, since he mentions having done hundreds and hundreds of cases, and he only mentions a few dozen), yet he never really bridges the gap between case file analysis and criminal profiling.Perhaps he doesn't want us to know, so that criminals cannot use that information to their advantage.If so, he should have explained himself, as the books cover and intro are rather misleading.

An Awesome Book, It just needed a little more proof reading!

Finally a good book from someone who's been there
As the mother of a son who is currently in prison, I have ordered several books in an attempt to get some kind of idea of what we can expect both in prison and when he gets out.This is one of only two books that I have found to be most helpful.The writer has a unique understanding of the system on both sides of the barbed wire and gives some excellent tips on how to succeed.Our family has never dealt with anything like this so we are completely in the dark and this book shined the light on some points I had never thought of that might have taken me by surprise if I had not read this book first. I highly recommend this book both for inmates and their families.

Rotten
I can't see anyone finding much value in this book except the kind of people who enjoy looking at pictures of mutilated dead bodies. Even that group ought to save their money, as the photos here have probably already been scanned and posted all over the internet by now, thanks to the more industrious members of that particular club. What little else there is of this book hardly bears mentioning.It amounts to little more than a poorly organized magazine article attempting to connect an almost random selection of art works to the crime. Sort of throw back to the old-time practice of dressing up prurient material as "educational," I suppose.

Life imitating art imitating death.
The book attempts tie together surrealistic art and the death of Elizabeth Short. It does an ok job of that. The book seems to be more about the art work created by people like Man Ray then it is about the murder of Elizabeth Short. It offers loose comparisons of death portrayed in art. The book gives examples of many Surrealistic artists of the day and a short biography of their work for those who aren't familiar with their work. It also attempts to familiarize people with the idea of surrealistic art. The book is less about the details of the murderand more about the theory of surrealism in the thought process of the murderer and the possible artistic motivational factors behind it.
Don't Bother
This piffle of a book can be read in one short sitting. If not for the extra-large typeface and huge margins that take up half of each page, the text would probably run about 30 pages. Here you will learn little about the Black Dahlia murder, less about surrealism, and next to nothing about any connection between the two. Can I have my money back? ... Read more

Why Those With ADHD Should Not Commit Murder
Diane Fanning just keeps getting better!In this most excellent written piece of true crime, Fanning tells the story of Richard McFarland and how he came to murder his wife, Susan.It is a very sad tale about a man with adult ADHD and other undiagnosed mental difficulties who out of a pure need to control kills his wife Susan, the breadwinner of the McFarland family and dearly loved by friends, in the presence of at least one of their three young boys.What keeps this story really interesting is some of the conversations Richard McFarland has with others during the time they are looking for Susan.Wow!Talk about crazy!
great true crime study
This is an excellent study in human behavior and why people stay in bad marriages. Even when the acts by a spouse are unacceptable, people look the other way or assume that the person is just "weird." People tend to think that there will be a change. As an abuse survivor, I can tell you that most often the bad behavior doesn't change. I'm sorry that Susan did not get out in time. I'm sorry for her children and family. Hats off to those who dared speak up. Fanning's writing is first rate. After I read Gone Forever I delved into her other books. Great job.

I started "Gone Forever" last night and just finished it and I found it very interesting.Makes you feel for this poor woman's frustration with such a loser for a husband.I enjoyed the book however it made me feel so bad at the end when it seemed that no one would adopt these poor little boys.Talk about counting on family.....NOT!!

the missing links
Great book, and even if only 10% of it happened, the average person would be crapping their pants in those situations.What I'd REALLY like to read is those thousand+ hours of tape transcripts.It would likely provide some of the missing links to further details as mentioned by other reviewers here.

Pretty good, quick read!
Doesn't get bogged down in a lot of details; however, because of this, it feels a little 'bare bones'...but this is probably because of disclosure issues and confidential materials.

Amazing Bravery
Thank God for William Queen!!!I just finished his book -Under and Alone - and am amazed at what this man went through to get the bad guys.What a great human being!I loved that part at the end of the book where he writes about knowing that these were serious bad guys that needed to be put away - but there was another factor - after living with them for 2 1/2 years he had witnessed it, lived it, felt it, and understood the love that these guys felt for their brothers, him included. That gave me goosebumps.There was a thin line there for him.Not everything is black or white.Sometimes there is that gray area.I hope that he remains safe and can have happiness in his life.He certainly deserves it!!! ... This is one of perhaps ten books from prior to 1985 that I decided to include because of their continuing value.I believe that both history and historians will credit these two individuals with having made a differenceby articulating so ably both the clandestine mentality and the problemsextant in the lack of oversight regarding proprietary organizations,propaganda and disinformation, and intrusive not-so-clandestine operations.
