Flint provides a lucid account of the complex battle over sprawl in America
'This Land' by Anthony Flint is written by a journalist in a journalistic style. The core of this book is devoted to the battle of ideologies over land use in America: the smart growth movement advocating for control on suburban growth, the new urbanists insisting on the need to rethink our zoning laws currently favoring inefficient sprawl, and property right advocates and lobbyists fighting to gain full control over what can be developed on their property. This story spanning over essentially half a century is told using a myriad of anecdotes and examples from all across America. One such story relates how land owners request compensations for lost revenues (equated to governmental takings) resulting from the restrictions on development outside urban growth boundaries. Flint remains critical and objective, avoiding an overt endorsement of anyone in particular. Many of the themes discussed in books such as `Suburban Nation' or `The Geography of Nowhere' are covered, but with a journalistic tone and restraint.
America the Beautiful
Anthony Flint does a great job of enlightening us about the history of sprawl in America and how we got to where we are today.It sure surprised me.He also offers solutions to the problems of sprawl, so the book provides hope.This Land is well written and easy to understand.

I read this book a few years ago and it opened my eyes forever.Instead of moaning, "What will we do about all of these cars?" I have framed the question, "What the h. is wrong with the United States?"Prior to reading this book, I had only the faintest ideas about what democratic transit planning would look like on a large scale.The answer, Switzerland!

Difficult, opaque, frustrating, but important
I am a second-generation Rowe disciple, I guess.I studied with a Rowe acolyte in graduate school and worked with co-author Fred Koetter in an urban design studio.Without the efforts these teachers have made to bring Rowe's ideas to urban design students, they may well have been neglected, because Collage City is a mess.It is badly marred by dense thickets of poorly-edited, idiosyncratic prose.It was one of the more frustrating books I had to read in school, but I'm glad it was required, because the close readings uncovered real gems of theory.Rowe reintroduced the complexities and possibilities of art into urban design right at the peak of Modernism's influence.Architecture was still in the thrall of La Ville Radieuse and socialist-utopian projects that aimed to simplify and disinfect cities.Jane Jacobs saw the social perils of these projects, Colin Rowe saw the architectural perils.His critique of the Modern project was among the most powerful, and among the least cogent.Still, though it requires some serious digging in prose-mud, the gems are there and worth the search.I recommend this book for graduate-level urban theorists or serious urban design students.

Spectacular Houses in a Spectacular Setting
Go north of San Francisco along the coast for a hundred miles or so. Buy 4,000 acres of timber and grazing land. You'll find that you have quite a setting for a housing development. Add rules that say how the house must fit into the land and the scenery and you have quite a housing development in quite a setting. Beginning in 1963 this is just what happened. And over the resulting 40 years quite a stunning set of houses has been built there.

Searching for theory behind praxis
Once I started reading this book I could not put it aside for long. Perhaps this is because so many of the insights that the author offers on what practioners of deliberative planning and rural development actually do resonates so much with the work I am involved with in Indonesia and the Philippines. Planning in a Pluralist World
As Forester explains in his Introduction makes, the title of his book is an intentional reference to Don Sch�n's path breaking The Reflective Practitioner. To use a trite clich�, that his book begins where Sch�n's book left off. There is, on the one hand, a remarkable similarity between the way Sch�n frames the situation the planner faces on the one hand, and Forester's description of the planner's world and his concept of deliberation on the other. The difference is in Forester's upfront, no-illusion understanding of the conflict-ridden nature of the world of planners and policy makers. Where Sch�n's reflection-in-action can, perhaps somewhat unfairly, be read as an improvement of the received view of professional knowledge as the sage expert who solves complex problems for clients in need, Forester has no illusions anymore about the moral and instrumental bankruptcy of the expert model. This becomes nowhere as clear as when we look at the examples each author uses. Where Sch�n uses one-on-one encounters between a psychotherapist and his supervisee, or an architect and his student, Forester examples include a bitter, entrenched fight over urban development in the Oslo harbour, a black home buyer counsellor in the overtly racist environment of a low income white settlement house, or housing improvement among poor campesinos in rural Venezuela. The Living Landscape

A Must Have!
This book is incredible, the essays, photography, map drawings and descriptions really changed the way I looked at the world around me.This book was used as our text book for a Senior Project class in design school.

You've never seen anything like this
This book will change the way you look at and think about landscape.Technically, it's a landscape architecture book, and the essays that deal with that subject are excellent.James Corner is one of the best landscape architects/theorists around, and his writing is though-provoking, lucid and enjoyable to read.He draws an wonderful comparison between this work and Le Corbusier's sightseeing flights over North Africa in the 1930's.But without a doubt, the reason to buy this book are the photographs that document the unexpected beauty that arises out of the interaction between man and nature.The incongruities of landscape, juxtaposed against the linear certainty of the Land Ordinance Act grid, farm plots and other common interventions make for stunning photography. Excellent graphic representation of landscape documentation

Biography - died 12/17/2005
Donald A. Mackay, an artist and illustrator best known for drawing the evolution of Manhattan, died on Dec. 17 in Frederick, Md., where he retired in 1993. He was 91 and formerly lived in Ossining, N.Y.
Manhattan's Best Construction Tour
Mr. MacKay has a winner on his hands with this illustrated narrative of how Manhattan was constructed from the ground up. I have purchased this book many times as gifts for friends. It makes a great coffee table book, often spurring conversation. Packed with interesting facts and technical data (made easy to understand for us novices) the book is a must for any one who has a keen interest in the construction development of Manhattan Island. I grew up across the river from Manhattan and worked in the Empire State Building and the World Trade Center. My only regret is that the book is now out of print. ... Read more
