4-0 out of 5 stars Flint provides a lucid account of the complex battle over sprawl in America
'This Land' by Anthony Flint is written by a journalist in a journalistic style. The core of this book is devoted to the battle of ideologies over land use in America: the smart growth movement advocating for control on suburban growth, the new urbanists insisting on the need to rethink our zoning laws currently favoring inefficient sprawl, and property right advocates and lobbyists fighting to gain full control over what can be developed on their property. This story spanning over essentially half a century is told using a myriad of anecdotes and examples from all across America. One such story relates how land owners request compensations for lost revenues (equated to governmental takings) resulting from the restrictions on development outside urban growth boundaries. Flint remains critical and objective, avoiding an overt endorsement of anyone in particular. Many of the themes discussed in books such as `Suburban Nation' or `The Geography of Nowhere' are covered, but with a journalistic tone and restraint.
5-0 out of 5 stars America the Beautiful
Anthony Flint does a great job of enlightening us about the history of sprawl in America and how we got to where we are today. It sure surprised me.He also offers solutions to the problems of sprawl, so the book provides hope. This Land is well written and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wide-ranging survey of defenders and contenders of sprawl
THIS LAND: THE BATTLE OVER SPRAWL AND THE FUTURE OF AMERICA charts the evolution of development in America: a process which holds political, social and economic clashes and influences throughout the process. From the roots of the anti-sprawl movement in the 1960s to issues of property and personal rights, developer rights, finances and more, THIS LAND comes from a journalist who covered planning and housing for the Boston Globe for sixteen years. His background lends to a wide-ranging survey of defenders and contenders of sprawl.

You can't say enough about this excellent survey of modern transit. Expect this book to inspire you!

5-0 out of 5 stars paradigm shifter
I read this book a few years ago and it opened my eyes forever.Instead of moaning, "What will we do about all of these cars?" I have framed the question, "What the h. is wrong with the United States?"Prior to reading this book, I had only the faintest ideas about what democratic transit planning would look like on a large scale. The answer, Switzerland!

5-0 out of 5 stars Surveying human needs, design challenges, and social issues alike.
DROSSCAPE: WASTING LAND IN URBAN AMERICA is a top pick not just for architects and building designers, but for any homeowners or buyer who would understand waste landscapes and how they are handled. Landscape architects must learn to accommodate them - and homeowners need to learn about them. DROSSCAPE is for both, offering a radical new method of thinking about landscape and its problems. Ten cities are analyzed through aerial photography, maps and charts with an eye to surveying human needs, design challenges, and social issues alike.
5-0 out of 5 stars top drawer quality
If Dolores Hayden's recent exploration of suburban geography in "A Field Guide to Sprawl" defined a genre of 'naming and photographing' the oddness of the emerging American hinterland of strip malls, powercenters and waste space, Drosscape is its first major, major contribution. This thing is stunning. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Difficult, opaque, frustrating, but important
I am a second-generation Rowe disciple, I guess.I studied with a Rowe acolyte in graduate school and worked with co-author Fred Koetter in an urban design studio.Without the efforts these teachers have made to bring Rowe's ideas to urban design students, they may well have been neglected, because Collage City is a mess.It is badly marred by dense thickets of poorly-edited, idiosyncratic prose. It was one of the more frustrating books I had to read in school, but I'm glad it was required, because the close readings uncovered real gems of theory.Rowe reintroduced the complexities and possibilities of art into urban design right at the peak of Modernism's influence.Architecture was still in the thrall of La Ville Radieuse and socialist-utopian projects that aimed to simplify and disinfect cities.Jane Jacobs saw the social perils of these projects, Colin Rowe saw the architectural perils. His critique of the Modern project was among the most powerful, and among the least cogent.Still, though it requires some serious digging in prose-mud, the gems are there and worth the search.I recommend this book for graduate-level urban theorists or serious urban design students.
1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccessible, and badly edited
Does not contribute much to the discussion, written in a lengthy, self-important, arrogant manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best to understand cities now and then
this book, published for the first time in 1978, ask the main principle of the modern mouvement. Rowe and Koetter write about the opposition of the concept of "tabula rasa and an urban tradition taken from thehistorical memory and progressive sedimentation of the cities."Collage" is a possible assimilation of the two differentproblematic, in the way that it's take past and future in a complexpresent. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Houses in a Spectacular Setting
Go north of San Francisco along the coast for a hundred miles or so. Buy 4,000 acres of timber and grazing land. You'll find that you have quite a setting for a housing development. Add rules that say how the house must fit into the land and the scenery and you have quite a housing development in quite a setting. Beginning in 1963 this is just what happened. And over the resulting 40 years quite a stunning set of houses has been built there.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fine house-by-house considerations of design
Essays by Donald Canty and Lawrence Halprin accompany beautiful black and white and color shots of California's architectural wonders of the coast which comprise the exclusive Sea Ranch community of homes. Ecologically inspired planning and innovative architectural dreams and designs went into the formation of the California's Sea Ranch community, which sprawls across several thousand acres of land. This could easily have been a picture presentation alone, but the fine house-by-house considerations of design, plan, and history makes it much more, and The Sea Ranch will be revered by architectural reference collections in art libraries. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Searching for theory behind praxis
Once I started reading this book I could not put it aside for long. Perhaps this is because so many of the insights that the author offers on what practioners of deliberative planning and rural development actually do resonates so much with the work I am involved with in Indonesia and the Philippines. 5-0 out of 5 stars Planning in a Pluralist World
As Forester explains in his Introduction makes, the title of his book is an intentional reference to Don Schn's path breaking The Reflective Practitioner. To use a trite clich, that his book begins where Schn's book left off. There is, on the one hand, a remarkable similarity between the way Schn frames the situation the planner faces on the one hand, and Forester's description of the planner's world and his concept of deliberation on the other. The difference is in Forester's upfront, no-illusion understanding of the conflict-ridden nature of the world of planners and policy makers. Where Schn's reflection-in-action can, perhaps somewhat unfairly, be read as an improvement of the received view of professional knowledge as the sage expert who solves complex problems for clients in need, Forester has no illusions anymore about the moral and instrumental bankruptcy of the expert model. This becomes nowhere as clear as when we look at the examples each author uses. Where Schn uses one-on-one encounters between a psychotherapist and his supervisee, or an architect and his student, Forester examples include a bitter, entrenched fight over urban development in the Oslo harbour, a black home buyer counsellor in the overtly racist environment of a low income white settlement house, or housing improvement among poor campesinos in rural Venezuela. 5-0 out of 5 stars "Listen to Stories, Learn in Practice"
John Forester's latest book entitled "The Deliberative Practitioner encouraging Participatory Planning Process", (MIT press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, London, England, 1999) develops the key ideas of his earlier writings on participatory planning processes by examining the challenges and difficulties of planning in the midst of contested power relationships.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Living Landscape
The Living Landscape has made a lasting contribution to ecological planning through its detailed documentation of this planning process and thoughtful comparison of the process's application in case studies.Dr. Steiner demonstrates in his book that ecological planning is just not a static plan-making process, but rather a dynamic process that requires consistent and meaningful input from stakeholders. In addition, he sees plan-making as a process that has implications for different scales of the environment, from the nation to the neighborhood. He stresses that the ecological planning process does not end when the plan is finished, but rather the process continues through the linkage of planning concepts to physical design. Given the strengths of this book, it is an essential volume for the library of any professional or student in the disciplines of the built environment and environmental management.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique and UsefulContribution
It is a rare planning book that outlines a detailed process for guiding landscape change in a deliberate and ecologically sound manner. The Living Landscape accomplishes this in a robust, clear and convincing way.The second edition improves on the first by including more landscape design information, updating case studies, and deepening the planning method (for instance, by including more on the use of Geographic Information Systems). The liberal use of cases is a strong asset of the book; each step in the ecological planning process is illustrated and explained by way of 'stories' from real places around North America. The Living Landscape is useful reading for students and practitioners in landscape architecture, architecture, environmental planning and natural resource management.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a landscape for living to a living landscape
The second edition of The Living Landscape has came out nine years after the first. The first, in fact, was published in 1991, it received an ASLA Merit Award for Communications in 1993, and then it was translated into Italian in 1994, where it was very well received among scholars and students of planning as well as in the schools of architecture throughout the country. 5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding contribution to Environmental Studies and Urban Studies reference collections
Expertly and knowledgeably co-authored by Cynthia Girling (Director and Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of British Columbia) and Ronald Kellett (Professor of Landscape Architecture and Director of the Neighborhoods LAB in the Design Centre for Sustainability at the University of British Columbia) Skinny Streets And Green Neighborhoods: Design For Environment And Community is an innovative modern introduction and study of urban planning and ecology that deftly provides the reader with an exceptional selection of proven methods for solving generally difficult problems for community landscapes in urban areas. Inclusive of in-depth analysis with years of experience in the urban planning, with an excellent selection of design strategies for opportune placement of plant life for the essential betterment of the environment. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!
This book is incredible, the essays, photography, map drawings and descriptions really changed the way I looked at the world around me.This book was used as our text book for a Senior Project class in design school.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've never seen anything like this
This book will change the way you look at and think about landscape.Technically, it's a landscape architecture book, and the essays that deal with that subject are excellent.James Corner is one of the best landscape architects/theorists around, and his writing is though-provoking, lucid and enjoyable to read.He draws an wonderful comparison between this work and Le Corbusier's sightseeing flights over North Africa in the 1930's.But without a doubt, the reason to buy this book are the photographs that document the unexpected beauty that arises out of the interaction between man and nature. The incongruities of landscape, juxtaposed against the linear certainty of the Land Ordinance Act grid, farm plots and other common interventions make for stunning photography.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent graphic representation of landscape documentation
I always enjoy graphic design, but this one integrates intelligent visual graphic representation and it portraits site/landscape analysis.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Biography - died 12/17/2005
Donald A. Mackay, an artist and illustrator best known for drawing the evolution of Manhattan, died on Dec. 17 in Frederick, Md., where he retired in 1993. He was 91 and formerly lived in Ossining, N.Y.
4-0 out of 5 stars Manhattan's Best Construction Tour
Mr. MacKay has a winner on his hands with this illustrated narrative of how Manhattan was constructed from the ground up. I have purchased this book many times as gifts for friends. It makes a great coffee table book, often spurring conversation. Packed with interesting facts and technical data (made easy to understand for us novices) the book is a must for any one who has a keen interest in the construction development of Manhattan Island. I grew up across the river from Manhattan and worked in the Empire State Building and the World Trade Center. My only regret is that the book is now out of print. ... Read more
