Rational Thoughts on a Typically Irrational Topic
Babbitt begins by telling us that relentless building of highways have spearheaded landscape destruction as land speculators and developers follow.Local governments generally have neither the political will, expertise, nor financial resources to stand up to well-financed developers and their political contributions.Babbitt then goes on to make the case for federal leadership in making land use regulation more effective, and uses examples from his experience involving the Everglades, Southern California, and the Chesapeake Bay to make the point.
A good prescription for a "realistic" 21st century environmentalism
I use "realistic" in scare quotes as an alternative to "idealistic" environmentalism without commenting on the moral value or desirability of either approach.

The Cost of Stopping Sprawl
As a resident of San Jose, CA, the second Smart Growth City following Portland, OR.To prevent Sprawl we instituted an Urban Growth Boundary in 1974. Our home prices now average $750,000 and only 15% can afford an averaged priced home. The family arrived in San Jose in 1896 and the grand kids are now in College. Our planning for them is to live downtown in a high-rise and ride light-rail or commute to Stockton 60 miles away. Builders are paying one to three million an acre which eliminates any possibility of single family homes on their own lots. Adjacent is the flat Coyote Valley of 7,000 acres which has been under planning study for 20 years but developing it could be called Sprawl. Preventing Sprawl trumps the childrens' housing. We can and must do better.

Too "compact" for it's own good.
Although this book had some interesting things to say, it was, in general, too "compact" for its own good. Bruegmann's arguments against traditional anti-sprawl histories read more like a jedi mind trick than a careful argument. A more careful argument with more supporting facts would have added to the book. As it is, it seems to me that this book will do little to change anyone's view of the 21st century city.

This is THE BOOK for anyone -not exclusively urban planners- who wants to understand not only the physical form of the city, but how its citizens interact with the urban landscape. Lynch's researches and projects brilliantly organized
Michael Southworth and Tridib Banerjee, former students of Kevin Lynch at MIT's School of Urban Studies and Planning, have organized a brilliant collection of most of Lynch's works. Here we can find his seminal ideas pointed out trough his researches in the field of environmental perception, as well as his urban design projects. The book still presents a good biography of Lynch and serves as a very interesting complement to the books that this fundamental author wrote. solid choice of readings
Contrary to the opinion of the fellow who gave this book 1 star, this book has an excellent selection of essays from many key 20th century thinkers (including three essays and 1 extract from Heidegger, which should be enough to undermine the critic's credibility).For the most part, they are presented unedited in full.Many of the selections are must-reads for people who wish to understand particular periods in the history of modern architecture, and it is nice to have them all together under a single cover.

I read this book and was instantly struck by the mis-representation and editing of the theories of some of the centuries most important thinkers.The discourse is limited to a one-dimensional view of architectural theory that seems to dismiss the most potent ideas of critical theory and radical critique. The book is structured around themed chapters containing several extracts with a logic of "this is a critique of this" in a rather naive way.The author's ommission of Heidegger's thinking is bizarre and his critique of Loos misses out the crucial influence of the intellectual milieu of early 20th century Vienna (Kraus, Wittgenstein etc.). Some interesting lesser known figures are brought to light (Kracauer for example)and there is some fantastic material here extracted from larger works, but be warned! this is a book with its own agenda.

Forget this poor piece of literature
I have seen, read and used a lot of other books in my work as an Airport Consultant. This book is so ridiculously topical that it amazes me someone took the time and effort to publish it! It's so expensive as well. Thisbook provides no answers at all to the problems surrounding strategicairport planning. The forecasting is weak and goes nowhere, the designparts have been done elsewhere and better than this book, the case studiesare an exercise in adhocracy. The first rule in airport planning is not touse airport systems in developing countries as examples for they're builtwith no attention whatsoever to what is appropriate or what is needed. Fora book that was supposed to help in planning airports, the authors have notplanned this book out well at all, there is no fluidity whatsoever. Getting to school
Of the many problems Americans frequently complain about, one has been lurking under the radar over the last several decades, and has occasionally surfaced in nasty fights at the state and local government level.This problem is that of transportation to and from college campuses.As the US population grows, the availability of open land goes down, and the number of college students increase, physical access to colleges has become a perennial issue in many states.I came to discover this in the past decade.First as a student, and now as a staff scientist at Arizona State University, I have been at ASU since 1994.In that time, I have watched parking at ASU go from great, to downright horrible.

I bought the book after reading the back cover copy, thinking it would be interesting because cities have always fascinated me. Well, it is hard to describe exactly how I felt reading the book. It was very incisive and eye-opening in explaining why suburban life creates the disconnectedness, the apathy, and the isolation so many people feel--and how the cities in their present state induce the rage and crime typical of those environments.
