4-0 out of 5 stars Still Relevant For Today
I was never a fan of Malloy's books when I first read them in the 1980s and 1990s. But I must admit that his basic principles hold true today. Classic attire is best for interviews and companies (such as pharmaceutical sales) that are still traditional suits-only fields. He is also correct when he says that the fashion industry works against professional attire for women, and that if you are excessively stylish in a corporate setting, you will lose credibility. Changing fashion styles are an incredible waste of money. However, you should disregard the outdated suits, rigid hairstyles and hard attache case in favor of more contemporary classic styles. A better book for that is "Dressing Smart" by Chic Simple Author Kim Johnson-Gross. Moreover, if you work in a creative field, you must not follow the navy & white starched formula of dressing--this could get you demoted. Malloy does mention this point, but doesn't really advise for creative jobs.

5-0 out of 5 stars read it and do what it says
All women should read it and do what it says.As a manager, I know what high importance is placed on presentation. In the workplace today, people have become too casual. Why not do all you can to earn more money, gain more respect and be percieved optimally as a professional? It is very easy for women to make wardrobe mistakes at the office today because of the sexy and casual fashions we see in all the stores. This is a bible for the working woman!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic, Timeless Advice
This new edition of "Women's Dress for Success" covers a lot more than clothes and accessories, and is a treasure trove of advice for any woman interested in self improvement. For most of us, there is usually room for "image enhancement," in how we present ourselves to the world, as our way of dressing and speaking, etc. all sends a message. John Molloy's recommendations are also helpful if you are on a budget. His "fabric test," color combinations, and style tips will save you a lot of money, and you can even do well using his guidelines shopping in a thrift store! You will no longer buy without planning, the things in your closet will mix and match properly, and you will not buy something "just because it's on sale," and find later that it doesn't really look good with anything else you own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, some good news!
We've been told since we were young that men marry "down" and that no woman with a career or significant education should expect to attract many men.But Whelan's book, citing U.S. census data and her own study commissioned for the book, reveals that this is false!High-achieving women marry at the same rates as, and in some cases higher rates than, the average woman. She goes on to explain that the persistence of this myth might be explained by the fact that high-achieving women marry a little later than the average woman. In other words, we might see that many high-achieving women in their late twenties are unmarried, but things start to even out as these women get married in their thirties.
5-0 out of 5 stars WhySmartWomenNeed to Read this Book
Remember that line about a woman over 30 having a better chance of being hit by lightning than getting married?Well I just picked up a copy of this book, and not only is it entertaining and compelling, but it also addresses all of the horrible, outdated myths about single women with careers, men and marriage -- it is possible (probable) to get married after your 30th birthday after all!I highly recommend this book and I'm buying this for all of my single friends. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Goddess wisdomfor everyone
This book is an excellent read for any woman (or the men in her life) that wants to understand herself better. I had several "light bulb" moments of insight as I was reading,as I saw parts of myself in the goddesses Artemis, Athena and Aphrodite. It was very educational as to what makes women tick and then what we as women can do to be more well rounded pyschologically. The blend of Jung analysis and ancient greek myth makes for an easy to understand why we women act the ways we do. I recommend it for any women seeking to know her inner goddess.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding My Own Myth
This book was extrememly useful to me.I have had to overcome many myths my family has projected onto me, about myself. Dr. Bolen's book helped me to pinpoint my underlying picture.I was able to do this because of the information about the other goddess archetyes.I think if you are a woman, and you are beginning a path of healing and recovery of your true self, this book will help you find the goddess who holds you captive(so to speak).I could then search for a way out of my captivity and access the strength available to me through the archetype I identified with. There are strengths and weaknesses to all the goddesses butI saw a common thread that ran through all of my life.I now had a starting point,I could then walk forward.

5-0 out of 5 stars The originator of all Goddess Power books
Now that the Goddess power has gotten mainstream ... it's time to honor the first writer to use it as a psychological archetype for all people. Dr. Bolen presents a brilliant piece of work. Find your inner Athena today!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Work
If you like Satrapi's other works, you will like this. Pithier, more serious than prior work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tiny but intimate glimpse into the lives of Iranian women....
Marjane Satrapi has a gift of bringing images of Iran to life with minimal words and simple but elegant drawings.EMBROIDERIES details much about Iranian women through a discussion between women of various generations at a tea time.Satrapi was in charge of the samovar and stated that the tea at noon and night functioned as a gathering time for women to discuss men, love, sex and even plastic surgery.Prior to reading this book the first time, I was unaware of how independent-thinking Iranian women are.I also was unaware of the numerous tactics used to maintain this freedom in what is a very male-dominated society (and when you learn what embroidery means....).I think the funniest moment was the woman who tried to cut herself with a razor on her wedding night so her husband would think she was a virgin but instead the woman cut her husband! However, the naivete was also very apparent as one woman married a man, received many jewels as wedding gifts, and then allowed her husband to leave for Switzerland 10 days or so after their wedding with all of her jewels- and of course he asked for a divorce after he had taken all of her jewels and safely left the country.Reading this book was like getting a tiny but intimate glimpse into the lives of Iranian women and realizing that they are just like American women in many ways.I highly recommend this book but will state I enjoyed it better the second time than the first.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read, but way too short.
I have read all of Satrapi's entertaining, educational and revealing books. Embroideries is all those things as well -- the only shortcoming is the length of the book -- the ending is very abrupt and you feel that there is much more to be said about the subject. Nonetheless would I recommend this book to anyone who liked Persepolis 1 & 2 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sex and the Seasoned Woman:Pursing the Passionate Life
I loved this book!As baby boomers approach midlife we have many choices in how to live "our second adulthood stage".After reading this book I am excited about this stage and the possibilities that lie ahead.Don't read it if you are not open to such ideas and would rather live this stage of your life in a more matronly fashion. But for those of us who want more....read it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Passion hype
According to the author, women below middle age either were or are repressed and suppressed, trying to please others and probably stuck in unhappy, unfulfilling, and sexless marriages. However, once past that indeterminate age, women have or will achieve mastery over their lives, kicking out deadbeat husbands or demanding wholesale changes, with lots of personal fulfillment, especially in the sexual realm.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo!
It takes a gut to write such a hot book. Yes, "hot" because as Sheehy proves with numerous interviews, surveys and personal stories, women's sexual lives don't stop after becoming moms or turning 40+ years. Surely this book will jump-start your faith that it's not over until it's over and even then there are still things (doctors included) that can help.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Kitty Connection
This book has been very insightful for me and some of my friends (this was a great gift item!).What I found most intriguing was the reconstruction of the make-up of "The Old Cat Lady" myth.It makes sense that it was built out of confusion, disdain, and the urge to make women feel repressed.
5-0 out of 5 stars a fantastic book
A great book for any women who loves cats.It tells about the very apprent female and feline love affair that's gone on for thousounds of years. It's really informative and interesting. It will make you feel closer to the special feline in your life. Remarkable book.

This book is a valuable addition to any cat lover's shelf. Author Simon interviews women of all ages, backgrounds and professions to find out just what holds this bond with our cats in place. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is by far the best self-help book for girls that I have ever come across. It addresses issues--some very difficult--that pre-teen and teenage girls are faced with today.I thought that every chapter was sensitive and well-written.My 14 year old daughter thought the chapters on body image, anxiety and insomnia made her feel better about herself and more in control of her life.I thought that the last chapter, on lesbian teens, was appropriate and helpful as it showed that most girls are not gay, and that tolerance for others who are different is important. My 12 year old daughter found this reassurring as she was beginning to worry that she was a lesbian because of something she read in a magazine. This book is a must-read for every adolescent girl and her parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but deals with some tough issues
My 14 year old daughter enjoyed most of the book, however the last chapter about what to do if you like someone of the same sex was a little "gross" for her.She isn't sexually active and found some of the issue a little too explective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent True to Life Book.Would highly recommend

3-0 out of 5 stars So-so
I bought this book looking for some shamless erotic reading, and I must say, this is deffinently not what I was looking for. There are a good number of erotic-themed stories, but there is even more background info about the writers of each story, and then analysis by the author as to what each fantasy "means". The book does make for interesting reading, but is not great for erotic purposes. I am very glad I am liberated as a woman, but I don't need politics in my sheets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Informative
If we can get beyond the fact that all of us guys get super turned-on by this and love to read these fantasies, then we can objectively take a look at this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY HOT
I found this book on a shelf at a library over 10 years ago. It was a hardcover book and the artwork was rather nondescript. What I browsed through within though is seared into my conscience and really opened my eyes to the world of female lust thought. I admit, NOTHING has ever aroused me like some of the entries inside - even hardcore [...]. It's all about intent, motive, desire. Is it real? Is it sincere? You could put the most flat out gorgeous woman in front of me and she might not have anywhere near the erotic intensity of a woman who society might deem "less than perfect" looks-wise. It almost always is the look in her eye, or the pitch of her voice, something that conveys warmth, you know? More than anything, seeing and feeling a palpable HUNGER, an aching so deep it hurts for satisfaction. I found a lot of that energy in this book and it was DIVINE. I wish Ms. Friday would release another compilation of this material. ... Read more

Editorial Review

In a country where the average woman is 5-foot-4 and weighs 140 pounds, movies, advertisements, and MTV saturate our lives with unrealistic images of beauty. The tall, nearly emaciated mannequins that push the latest miracle cosmetic make even the most confident woman question her appearance. Feminist Naomi Wolf argues that women's insecurities are heightened by these images, then exploited by the diet, cosmetic, and plastic surgery industries. Every day new products are introduced to "correct" inherently female "flaws," drawing women into an obsessive and hopeless cycle built around the attempt to reach an impossible standard of beauty. Wolf rejects the standard and embraces the naturally distinct beauty of all women. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a feminist classic
This book should be required reading for all freshmen girls. Even if you don't agree with its central premise or find its style infuriating this is something you should be talking and thinking about, especially as our culture increasingly sexualises young girls at earlier and earlier ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Unattainable Aim to Become a Mannequin
The fashion industry is a 100 billion dollar a year industry, just in the United States! The cultural programmers, advertisers, and marketing psychologists have devoted much time, money, and brainpower into the problem of turning people into consumers - of how to make people feel "not right" unless they buy the consumer goods marketed to make them "feel right".And of course, the goal of becoming a plastic mannequin is unrealistic and unattainable, thereby ensuring that billions will continue to be spent in trying to attain the unattainable.
5-0 out of 5 stars The sisterhood has a bible!
I was so excited to read this book. Women, we've been looking for the enemy in all the wrong places. The enemy is smeared on our faces every morning and wiped off at night. The enemy is brand name clothing that only comes in sizes 0-4. The enemy is getting richer and more powerful every day that we fail to acknowledge it. I wish this book could be required reading for women in America- sort of a rite of womanhood. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A useful book for raising a teenage son.
I found this book to be useful in understanding why my son was already entering teenage rebellion at the age of 12.The advice to give more independence while staying in charge on things that REALLY matter was invaluable. I convinced my husband to participate in this process which was not easy. The result was excellent and within one year he was in control of his own behavior without constant supervision. He is now 18 and we never had any major difficulties during his teenage.I do not know why a male reviewer was so negative about the book but I totally disagree. The book is based on research and confirmed by information in other books that were published somewhat later (written by men such as Michael Gurian's "The Wonder of Boys")

1-0 out of 5 stars Stick to girls!
In attempting to better understand my son after divorce, I read this, as one of perhaps a dozen books that were recommended. In a short summary, and as a divorced dad, I believe this author should stick to what she understands, girls and their mothers. There are much better books if you are interested in understanding how boys grow, and how to help them mature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong Mothers, Strong Sons
This book was a lifesaver in my dealing with my 13-year old son who seemed determined to take out all his frustrations and anger at his parents' divorce on me. Understanding why he is the way he is and what is normal andnot normal has helped me enjoy being around him more. This book gave me thestrength to stand my ground with my son who is constantly pushing thelimits to the max. I wish my ex-husband would read the book because I thinkCaron's insight into boys is invaluable, regardless of whether you are amom or dad. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for All People
I'm a gay white male and I loved this book! Collins does an amazing job presenting her compelling thesis, and I continue to thank Sociology in general for being the most daring, critical-thinking academic discipline ever. It's no surprise sociologists like Collins dare to speak out on gay rights issues (see her section on homophobia/heterosexism) - sociology is the only area of thought that consistently questions the status quo. In a day in age where so many (though by no means all!) African-American (heterosexuals) are horribly anti-gay and increasingly pro-greed/pro-capitalism, Collins stands out as a heroine for all peoples. I am still waiting for an openly gay hip-hop artist!! How cool would that be? I recommend this book to absolutely anyone. Five stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspired
Patricia Hill Collins exemplifies a practitioner's and theorist's point of view on black feminism as it relates to Africa American and our African sisters. She references critical and inspiring data and quotes from a varied repetoire of authors, historians, and philosophers. The author explains the context and format of her subject upon initial reading. This book also draws commonalities among the issues and concerns among African American women and our international sisterhood (i.e., African, Carribean, etc.,)It illustrates the social and cultural values among all groups, the commonalities among the values while focusing on the African American feminist aspect. This is a must read for any person, be it woman or not, African American or other. It brings about a social and cultural understanding that is pertinent to the "holonomy" of understanding and appreciating varied cultural, social and historical values and experiences while commencing to the building of community. Collins'analysis of black feminism is an enlightening piece of literature that forces its readers to chanllenge main stream assumptions and discover the underlying mechanisms of racism and sexism in America. To create thiseffect, she uses a range of feminist perspectives form the calm subtletiesof Angela Davis to the slightly boisterous philosopy of Bell Hooks.Nevertheless, by displaying these perspectives equally Collins shows thatthe struggle for equally is not an individual struggle but one thatrequires collectively. This book is intensely thought provoking and it isguaranteed to give its readers profound insight into black feminism. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars NOT FOR WUSSIES - THIS BOOK IS SO HILARIOUS IF YOU HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR!
I laughed all the way through this book and could totally relate to her style of humor. If you are a prissy wuss that sits around and tries to be Ms Perfect and think your child can't be watched by anyone but you, this is not for you.If you are an individual and honor your sense of independence and may have been a rock star at some point in you life, you will enjoy this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Just for laughs
This book is wonderful for making you laugh about the hardest parts of being a new mom.I fought hard to continue breastfeeding and I'm so happy I still am, but I felt the lactation consultants were too militant and the guilt I felt about even considering giving formala (I never did or have) was overwhelming and frankly painful. This books makes you laugh...plain and simple. It is not an advice book.Readers are mature enough to tell the difference.

1-0 out of 5 stars I like her sense of humor, but...
This is just one in a long line of "yeah I have a baby but that's not going to affect my life one bit" books. As others have mentioned, her breastfeeding section is just sad.If the author wants to use formula, that's fine.No reason to bash moms who nurse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Positive insight for new stepmoms
This book is easy to read. It is has positive advice for new stepmothers trying to figure out their personal style, and provides humor to help through tough situations. Lots of personal stories from other stepmoms, and how they handled situations and emotions. Helps you realize your are not alone, and every thought and emotion is normal for the adjustment of becoming a stepmother. I would especially recommend this book for stepmoms who are not biological mothers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for every Stepmom - new or old hand!
I've been a step mom for about 3 years now and even though I think I've got it down pat, there are still lots of little things that crawl under my skin and make me feel un-motherly.This book is GREAT guidance for every stopmom. Not only does it give you good, practical advice on how to deal with the day to day life of being a stepmom and what to expect, it lets you know that you're not alone and that we all feel the same way as we go through our metamorphosis from single girl to step mom.I now know why I have an evil twin (which didn't exist before I got married) and how to combat it.If you have a friend that's a stepmom or will become a stepmom, you owe her this book. It's a light in the dark!

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny & True

1-0 out of 5 stars Unequivically biased
Unfortunately I bought this book hoping that it would uncover more historical data and the actual works of Veronica Franco translated by a scholar in the field.
3-0 out of 5 stars A difficult tome
After seeing "Dangerous Beauty" I became curious about the distinctive life style of Renaissance Venice, and hoped to learn a lot more. This book was just a bit too dry and scholarly for casual reading.A great deal of space is used for both the Italian and English translations, which must be interesting to some readers.Although Veronica comes across as intelligent, determined and brave, I would have wished to know more about her and her society in terms of food, clothing, houses, daily activities, etc.Perhaps not enough is known about Veronica herself, but I would hope that a gifted author somewhere could make her story into a novel and breathe some warmth and life into her legend.

3-0 out of 5 stars 5 star history; 2 star read
This book is a must read if you're interested in 16th century Venice, Veronica Franco, or the world of the famous Venetian courtesans. It's also an EXTREMELY dry read. The book is quite obviously a doctoral dissertation, and could have used an edit to made it more accessible (something more along the lines of Stephen Ozment's books). I'm glad I read it. I tracked it down because I wanted to see just how accurate the movie Dangerous Beauty--which is LOOSELY based on this book--was. The answer is: Not very. Oh well. For those of a scholarly bent, this is a great resource book, for those looking for a light, romantic read (a la the movie) look elsewhere. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What a load of #%@*
The only thing perhaps more moronic than this tripe is those who have let themselves be bamboozled into thinking that there is something of deep thought and/or substance here.I can only assume that those who found this entertaining are extremely insecure and think that if they like something that others who are perceived to be "important" like that they too will be "important".The part of this I truly find mind-numbing is her "deep" and "thoughtful" insight into the solution to the violence/terrorism in the world;all we need is "vagina warriors" working at the "grass-roots level".You know what, let me reconsider my first observation; to call this moronic is an insult to morons everywhere. It's sub-moronic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great text spoken by author but no video of the author declaiming!
Great text; very well spoken by author; but no video of the author declaiming! OTHERWISE FIVE STARS!
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic!
It is quite rare that a book appears that is this good; but this book is so good that even men (I am male) can (i.e. should) enjoy it. A groundbreaking, unabashedly feminist (wo)manifesto, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to countless women in the past ten years, and has ushered in a new era of sexual liberation. If you are still incredulous, ask yourself how many books published hitherto so much as had the word 'vagina', let alone all the facts thereabout in it? A wonderful book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and encouraging
This book is full of encouragement and information. When everyone is telling you it's too hard to breastfeed twins, this book tells you that you can, you should, and practical tips on how to.I found it extremely helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY one out there about nursing multiples
Nursing ONE baby can be challenging, but when they come two at a time, you need to call in the big guns. Although a previous reviewer scoffs at the fact that Gromada had her twins over 20 years ago,she fails to realize that the author has been working in her field(lactation consulting,La Leche League leader, renowned expert on twins and public speaker, etc;see karengromada.com)for over 25 years and consults with mothers of multiples daily.
5-0 out of 5 stars Having more than 1?Read this!
Wonderful book.Wonderful ideas, great support, and validated things I thought, but weren't sure could happen.Believe me, the phrase, "It's a twin things" is so true!My first daughter never dreamed of doing some of the things my twins do.They really know how to accomplish a task together.
