good material - too bible thumping though.. love your wife
The book follows on the vein of 'men are from mars, women venus', both excellent for men and relationships (not for dating). To be honest the authors admit the survey of womens results will be slanted to reflect their christian background. The points made are 'Excellent'... no really they are..... but his wife is a woman columnist writer(read feminist) and he goes on to bash 'porn' (he neglects that 51% of all books sold are romance novels...... the same as porn for males, how many women go to movies and drool over brad pitt etc?). If you're going to do a survey then give us the results of how women think without the christian lecturing.... isn't it about time men can honestly admit to women, that yes we enjoy looking at women, even naked women.... without having to be lectured we're bad...... author needs to explain and accept male behaviour as it is, not as how he wants it to be..... warts and all. Feminists had to do this for women!

Read this book for what it's worth!
I bought this book after reading the back cover, which reads as follows:"When does an affair begin?Not with the first forbiddin touch...but with the first forbiddin thought.Unexpectedly, you find yourself enjoying a powerful emotional bond with another man.You feel like you matter to someone again.And the door you thought was locked so firmly--the door to sexual infidelitiy--is suddenly ajar."
Helpful to the faithful.....
I ordered this book on a recommendation of a dear and true friend who serves upon the ship M V Odulus, which sails throughout the world preaching it's Christian religion and bringing books and knowledge to those in deprived places on this earth.I highly recommend the book for anyone who is truly faithful and believing in Jesus Christ...it would definately be helpful from a religious aspect.But for those of us who are atheists, or only believing of a "higher power" or "energies", this book will leave you befuddled and chuckling ever so lightly.I think the book is truthful in regards to it's direct religious aspects, but personally, leaves the rest of us shaking our heads in religious discomfort.

This book changed my life!
I began this book on January 1, 2006 and completed it on January 14!!!!!!!!!This book has truly been given by the Lord and Mrs. Ethridge is an eloquent and honest writer.I am buying several copies AND the workbook for my sisters. I suggest it to women ALL the time and have even started a women's group, by the Lord's grace here in Alabama.I was able to walk away from a very emotionally abusive relationship after completing this book.I HIGHLY recommend it and say this to anyone reading this - if you are tired of low quality relationships, compromise and being bound, please pray and read this book.If you are ready to be challenged to go to the next level, if you are ready to hear the truth about why you do what you do...this book is an amazing tool!No, it will not solve all your problems, nor will you morph into a new person instantly, but you WILL have the tools necessary to walk forward into a new you.Yea, I dig it THAT much. ... Learn To Love God
I love this book! Elizabeth George does a great job of teaching how to love God.Here's a quote from the book: "We need to sail on as we look ahead and reach forward toward spiritual maturity and the goal of loving God with all our mind.As we focus on God, He will guide our steps, empower our service to Him, and work in us the characteristics of Christ as He enables us to both meet the demands of the present and press on toward the prize.This is a great book and it has study questions in the back for each chapter.

This book was great!
I found this book to be very, very helpful in dealing not only with depression but panic/anxiety disorder. It offers up some very useful advice. I found the first half of the book more useful, but enjoyed the entire thing.

Suggested study.
If you are suffering from depression this is a wonderful study to redirect your thoughts to what "is true." Elizabeth George does a wonderful job having you take a closer look at God's Word. As far as I am concerned our socialized culture has failed in trying to convince me that purity and faithfulness are a thing of the past. I no longer listen to cultural icons whose lives only reflect faithlessness and momentary gratification.I hear a much louder voice, the voice of individuals like Lisa Bevere who speak of truth that is unchanging. Story of Ruth
Jam packed with wisdom and insight for all people. A must read for all women and one that you will read many times. Sure wish I had this guide when I was a young woman. Plan to use as a discussion book for a spirituality group. A fabulous book to give as a gift.

Motivation for coping with the daily grind of life
I read "The Story of Ruth" about a year after I read "Scarred by Struggle," which is also by Dr.Chittister. Both books offer inspriation for dealing with difficulties based on a biblical story. The difference between the type of advice they offer, is that "The Story of Ruth," contends more with the daily struggles that confront us in our lives, whereas "Scarred by Struggle" offers advice more suitable to a particular setback, such as an end of a relationship, or loss of job.

Good things, but seriously flawed
Without going into too much detail, the main problem with this book is that it fails to recognize that in the ancient world women and slaves were part of everyone's everyday life - and that homosexuality, as we understand it today, was totally unknown.For the author to say that the Bible's attitude towards women and slaves can undergo a change but not towards homosexuality is to place his whole thesis on a false footing.When the Bible says: "This is wrong" we have to be sure what 'THIS' is!
One Man's Opinion, Not Trans-Cultural Ethic
All Mr. Webb has proven is that some prejudices are more deeply intrenched in our protean cultures than others.Prejudices against women and the accepted practice of enslaving people were somewhat quicker (ironic as it is to use that word) to evaporate in the light of truth and human dignity.Every thoughtful Christian I know firmly believes that homophobia will go the same way as slavery and the subjugation of women.Mr. Webb presents no evidence to the contrary.All he does say is that it is his opinion, and the opinion of his circle, which he mistakenly takes for universal truth.

Mary Daly makes no apologies.Instead of employing 'mental contortionism' in an effort to interpret blatantly sexist texts in an equitable manner, Daly bravely tosses them aside and forges a new theological understanding.This is one of the best indictments of traditional Catholic beleif that I have ever read, from the scathing rebutals of the pauline texts to the rejection of the idea of any messiah cum human. The tone is forceful witty and incredible clever, and definitely keeps you reading.The urge to move beyond outdated ideas is one of the corner-stones of progress and thus I salute Mary Daly for her much needed work in religious philosophy.

Mary Daly has contributed little to humanity or women
For decades feminist authors such as Miss Daly have used their dubious credentials in academia to promulgate the fantasy of a golden age before the onset of "patriarchy," It's the same 60s nonsense clothed in a new phraseology and when we strip away the fancy prose we're left with the following executive summary: Women once ruled the earth with flowy robes and Gaia conjuring magic wands, and all the world worshipped the Goddess. Any woman who has the courage to study the historical, archeological and paleological evidence by academics with ACTUAL ACCREDITED Ph.D.s will soon understand that this gynocentric vision is a myth which harms and enslaves women. Why? The effect of this genre of novel is not to increase grace, love and mercy, but to further splinter humanity into yet more little tribes, all petulantly vying for victim-status and privilege. When we sublimate and externalize our spiritual pain and longing for transcendence to a hatred of other groups (in this case, men) how can we find happiness in our journey through life?

Excellent Book!
My husband brought this home from the Shepherd's Conference for me - and it is SO good! It's written from a very Biblical perspective, and has a big focus on submission and discipleship.There is so much in here:older ladies discipling younger ladies, godliness, submission, compassion, serving others, and Biblical womanhood.It's loaded with Scripture throughout. You don't have to be involved in leadership of a women's group for this to be relevant. I wholeheartedly recommend it for all women - and for their pastors!

Women's Ministry in the Local Church, authored by J. Ligon Duncan and Susan Hunt, is a practical book that seeks to provide guidance on how and why a church can and should have an effective women's ministry. It is a timely book, arriving at a point when the church is in need of this type of biblical guidance. The role of women in the church has been an area of great dispute of late, though thankfully, it seems that Scripture will prevail. However many evangelical women, and even those who may appear to be mature Christians, are functional feminists because, as the authors point out, "the world's paradigm for womanhood is the only one they have heard." The church has much ground to make up.

A must read for any inclusive theology
Over the course of Christian history, women have been disenfranchised and oppressed.Patriarchal systems and androcentric mentalities have marginalized women sociologically and psychologically, even within the Christian community.Elizabeth Johnson believes this oppression stems from the language used for God.Because God is referred to exclusively and literally as a male, women have reduced roles within Christianity.Johnson seeks to use new imagery and metaphors for speech about God, in order to emancipate women from this oppression.Johnson recognizes that all language about God is inadequate, but using feminine imagery for God restores human dignity in women and men and helps with the flourishing of humanity.
Interesting for both, men and women, lay-people and clerics.

Profound "I can get through to you" book that is SO needed!!!
I have never read one of Ms. Higgs books before, but was somehow "pushed" to pick it up and take a look. "Embrace Grace." The Lord certainly knows that I needed to do just that. Ms. Higgs writes with compassion and empathy...not preachy at all, but supportive and encouraging. There is no question that this book is directed at a Catholic audience. Being raised Catholic, I could relate. If you cannot or would not relate to the teachings of Christ, then this may not be the book for you because it is through belief in Christ and the relevant Biblical passages in this book that one can make the connection and heal.

What Happens When Women Pray
This is such a great book! I'm now reading it for the third time and I gain new insights each time. I've purchased copies for friends and family as well.

it changed my life.
This book (Chinese translation) was given to me on the day of my baptism by an old lady in my church. At that time I was a 13 years old boy in a Presbyterian church in Taiwan. The Chinese title of the book was "The Power of Prayer" so I never thought of it as a book written for women. I remember I wept many times reading through that book. At this particular end-of-the-chapter prayer in which I surrender every part of my life to God...I was only a 13 years old boy in 6th grade, yet I pictured all the things I would do and love in the next decades and that I had given them up to God for His purpose.

A Must-Read for Christian Women
This book should be required reading for every Christian woman.Mrs. Pride exposes the goals of the feminist movement and points out how many Christian women are furthering those goals.She demonstrates how our current (anti-Biblical) societal norms are destructive to family, and thus to society.Mrs. Pride's claims are well-documented.If you want to remain complacently in your comfort zone, fitting neatly into the world, then leave this book on the shelf.If, on the other hand, your desire is to please God and bring glory to the Saviour by being "not conformed to this world," then let this text transform your mind by its application of Scripture.

I don't believe a person can be a Bible-believing Christian as well as a liberal and/or a feminist.Any Christian who has read the Bible in the correct context would surely agree that a Christian follower of the Lord should want to be where GOD puts them, not where their own heart desires.

my my...not one but TWO family reviews on Amazon. I always get suspicious when amidst many negative to average reviews one finds a glowing review clearly written by family members or people known to have very close ties to the author. it is good that Ms Prides children think so highly of her. HOWEVER that does not erase the fact that her book is loaded with error. she takes a basic fact: she discovered that happiness was not a fruit of radical feminism. then she does such a complete 180. she makes many many things that are not absolutes by any means into absolutes. she turns things that are nothing more than personal choice (although dont EVEN get me going on home birth...as I personally know someone whose life was shattered by a home birth gone wrong I just cringe to see someone spiritualize it as "Gods way") into major issues that I doubt that god even cares about (although Satan sure loves the strife stirred up whenever a new "rule" is created in Christendom to entrap Gods followers). re: the full quiver mindset.I have researched it rather thoroughly and I think they make some huge leaps, making scripture say something is not. I have heard the "children are blessings and who would refuse Gods blessings" so many times I could scream. yet the argument could go both ways: many people DO refuse things that could be blessings, taht are stated in scripture to be blessings because int heir situation right now it wouldnt be a blessing. I have heard the "so and so wouldnt be here if their parents hadnt used birth control argument". well, two words for that: Ethel Waters, the gospel singer concieved by rape. Gods ways are beyond our ways and He can bring good out of bad. if the Wesleys would not be here if Susannah used birth control, Ethel Waters would not be here if it were not for the act of rape. and I dont see anyone calling rape good even if good came out of it.....ditto just about any adopted kid...to follow this line of reasoning of the Prides etc...you would have to say that God wanted unmarried parents to fornicate so that they would bring so and so into the world....some things are just beyond our understanding and disecction and I think thats the way God wants it.the church history argument doesnt cut it because there are many things, anti semitism springs to mind, that have had much support in church history that are absolute lies when argued biblically. much of this radical lifestyle that not just Ms Pride but others like her promote is reaction to the culture rather than real scriptural argument. it is said you can prove anything from the bible and this is no exeption. as for the working mother issue: until the industrial revolution the whole idea of "jobs" for male OR female was different. out of neccessity there was a clear division of labor. somewhere in there careerism for both men AND women assumed a very different meaning than providing for their families. two hundred years ago people didnt even think about their work being stimulating or using their gifts. everyone did hard heavy manual grunt work whether in or out of the home. except for a handful of elitist intellectuals. who would covet the others role? no one, I would bet. unless you escape to join the amish or soemthing (an ideal held by a lot of these types..they seem to worship the amish and groups like them) you cannot escape that our world operates very differently than that of two hundred years ago. it is key to remember that both then and now our world is fallen...trying to go back and immitate another time and place wil not erase the fallenness that permeates society. our world has not and never will be a perfect reflection of Gods kingdom. bringing us to working moms: there were no "outside the home working moms" two hundred years ago BUT these mothers lives were most certainly not filled with child nurturing activities day in and day out. much of it was hard manual labor. children were granted a freedom to wander around and do thier own thing in a way that would make most parents today cringe. I am not saying bad or good: it just was. but the point is that their mothers days were not filled iwth "mothering", they were too busy doing laundry by hand, growing food, making bread from very scratch, making all their clothes etc etc. even todays homestead movement glorifies this and does a few of these things in a dilettantish way to express thier disdain for modern society but the reality is these peoples lives were harder than any person living in todays america can even imagine. Ms Pride attempts to "fix" modern family ills by returning to a simpler (or so she sees) time then filling in the blanks with proof texted scripture to try and prove her point. she gets incredibly legalistic with this working at home vs at a job business. by her standards if say, a woman was a graphic designer and had her business in her home she would be doing it "gods way", but if she had to rent a separate office space and hire a babysitter or (God forbid) swing shift with her husband then she would be rebelling against God. this reminds me of people debating around about hem lenght nad just "how much" makeup God has a problem with. the whole working mother debate really should hinge on where someoens heart is...what is their priority>(something I might add goes for men as well as women: workaholism is very detrimental) i have seen this type of mindset as Ms Pride has encourage a man to put himself in an early grave (not to mention have nothing to do with his kids but provide a paycheck) all so that the wife doesnt "have to work"; unless of cousre her skills run towards hawking tupperware or discovery toys. I have seen, as a fruit of this type of thinking people getting incredibly legalistic over what exactly constitutes a working mother in rebellion and what constitutes an obedient stay at home wife. somehow I dont think htis is what godhad in mind. I might echo here too reviewers who find Ms PRides whole tone to be angry, condescending and nasty towards those who dont see things the way she does. it is sadly something I have found to be very very common among people who hold her viewpoints. and for my final complaints about making lifestyle choices which apparently worked for her and her family out to be Gods truth for all I have two words: Andrea Yates. I have to wonder if along with all the happy folks coming up to the Prides at homeschool conventions they can alsocount Russell and Andrea among those who can say that thier lives were irrevocably influenced by Mary's writings. ... Quran and women
wow! for a small book it is rich in scholarly discourse. It is not an easy book to read even for the well read. However, it's a welcome exegis for those who want a solid base in Quranic revelation regarding women (from a woman's perspective), and then move forward. This is a rare and encouraging opportunity to see genius at work.

Everyone should read this
Most Muslims are not Arabs, and consequently don't speak Arabic, the language of the Qur'an. So an awful lot of Muslims themselves have never actually read the Qur'anic verses about women and tried to make sense of them. On the other hand, most non-Muslims have never read the Qur'an, and tend to assume that the Muslim view of women is more or less that of the Taliban or the Saudis. This book, written by an progressive Muslim American academic with a Ph.D. in Arabic, should be essential reading for both the above groups.

AN IMPORTANT PERSPECTIVE
This black American Muslim woman's profound study of the Qu'ran with respect to women in Islam ismuch needed because it questions the widely accepted attitude among Muslims that women are in certain respects inferior. This is not a superficial study and it bears re-reading and reflection. I read it once while reading the work by Irshad manji, "What is Wrong with Islam." This book has shaped my worldview for the last two decades
I read Clark's masterpiece in the late 1970s or early 1980s, and it has formed the bedrock of my thinking about men and women in (or out of) the Church ever since.I have had many years to evaluate new arguments and issues, and Clark's analysis keeps proving to be the soundest way of resolving each one.Clark is a rare scholar who unites a number of different disciplines in support of an original position which is fully consistent with Scripture.

The fact that this work has an Amazon sales rank greater than 200,000 says more about the state of our culture than it does the value of this book.The author is a Yale sociologist who uses knowledge of his chosen vocationto peruse scripture and church tradition for Christian teaching on genderroles.In a little less than 800 pages Clark offers up a stunning theologyof how the church has responded to gender issues in the past and how we asmodern-day believers should respond to this current hornet's nest ofpolitical correctness.I am so convinced of the importance of thegender issue debate and the strength of the work Clark has done in thisbook that I believe every Christian should read it.The Christian churchis stagnating and ineffective in today's issue debates not because herpositions are poor, but because she has become ignorant and apathetic. ...
