5-0 out of 5 stars An aptly presented and profoundly insightful collection
Collaboratively compiled and edited by M. J. Daymond, Dorothy Driver, Sheila Meintjes, Leloba Molema, Chiedza Musengezi, Margie Orford, and Nobantu Rasbotsa, Women Writing Africa: The Sou-thern Region is an extensive, 554-page work detailing (from a distinctly women's perspective) the history, culture, social issues, and modern-day living conditions in the southern region of Africa. Countless personal testimonies form the core of this aptly presented and profoundly insightful collection. Women Writing Africa is enthusiastically recommended for African Studies and Women's Studies reference collections and reading lists. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Stories...compiled by the queen of narcissism
While the stories contained in this book are for the most part good (not bad, but nothing to write home about) the editor and compiler of this book, Paula Gunn Allen can be described in less flattering terms. In the introduction to this book, Allen discusses the tragic history of Native Americans, especially the savagness of the white men who were supposedly the brings of civilization.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Collection of Stories
"Spider Woman's Granddaughters" is a collection of traditional and modern short stories concerning Native American women. With the exception of the traditional stories and myths, Indian women wrote all of the stories. This was just one text out of many assigned for a class I took on Native American religion. At first glance I really didn't think this book would be very interesting. Most of the stories looked so short in length that I couldn't imagine they could convey anything of value. I was wrong. Most of the stories here are powerful evocations of Indian spirituality. A few are downright moving on an emotional level. The editor of this book wisely placed traditional stories before more modern stories that are based on that particular tradition or myth. This makes it much easier to understand the context for certain stories. Some stories lack a traditional base and deal with extremely modern issues such as homosexuality. In short, whatever type of story you may be looking for, you can probably find it in this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Great for classroom intro for Native American Lit
What a great book.So many books that are available are on the stories of men (these are important too) but women are seldom heard from.We usually only hear of vision quests and warriors. This is a book that would introduce students to both sides of the story and the intro gives such insight to the Native American woman.Allen states the plights and goals of their women clearly and understandably. What is available in the canon is limited. This is a great book to lead into discussions and comparisons. It shows the otherside of stereotypes. It is interesting enough that students would not be bored. There are many selections that could be assigned and finished in one class period.A must for any language arts teacher or person interested in Native American lit- also great for a feminist point of view of another culture. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars 19C Style Detracts from BIography by Leading Alcott Scholar
Madeleine Stern was integral in uncovering the "lost" thrillers of Louisa May Alcott, which were published under her pen name A.M.Barnard. Because of her familiarity with Alcott's life and work, I expected a lot more out of the biography than I received. The author's 19C style detracts from the information presented and often leads to confusion on the part of the reader, assuming the reader has familiarity with the vocabulary, customs and diseases of the 19C. The author also mentions characters without bothering to mention their significance. For example "Miss Burnett" is mentioned several times in the biography. What is never mentioned is that "Miss Burnett" is Frances Hodgson Burnett, author of such childhood classics as "A Little Princess" and "The Secret Garden."I felt this book would have been more useful to me had it been written in a more straight forward style and been more educational in its approach not only to the Alcott in particular, but to the 19C in general.

2-0 out of 5 stars Life in a Cold Climate
A biography? Not really, she compares Nancy Mitford's life with those of Nancy's fictional characters.Often boring, when she does write about Nancy, its very good.Too much symbolism in this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Annoying
Possibly one of the more annoying books I've ever read.Ms. Thompson tries to write in a friendly, gossipy style, leading her to be flippant about some fairly serious world and personal events. She frequently lambasts other biographers of the Mitfords for reading too much into Nancy's books: but then on the same page she talk about all the subtext in her novels that MUST be true because otherwise she wouldn't have written about it.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Treat! Smart, funny, acidic
This is a wonderful book, in part because even more than a bioit is a critical essay about the intersection of Mitford's influences -- the eccentric Mitford family; WWI and II; the fading of an increasingly impoverished aristoracy; the privations inflicted upon England after WWII; English vs. French romantic mores; and many more.

Editorial Review

Since Journal of a Solitude, May Sarton's musings on books, poetry, friendship and the pleasures of everyday life have grown richer with each newinstallment. In this, her last journal, Sarton continues to adjust to the feeling that she is a stranger in the land of old age.And though her struggles and daily setbacks continue, there is an optimistic, musing tone as she contemplates this unique time in a person's life.May Sarton died in July 1995, not long after completing this volume. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Closing Chapter of a Stellar Life
At Eighty-Two is an incredible though painful final journal from Sarton. If you are reading Sarton for the first time, read Journal of a Solitude or (my favorite) Recovering first, and then turn to this one.Sarton deals in this journal primarily with the diminishment of old age.Being quite ill at the time, she occassionally comes accross quite bitter, but perhaps this is what makes this journal so poignant and so important for a society that either forgets about or romantizes old age. ...
